. . . he said what?

It was always just a quick visit. She’d leave the table, or the couch, or wherever we were and be back in a few minutes. We could be at home, at a restaurant, or at one of her friend’s houses. Sooner or later, it was time for her to go see this mysterious woman. Miss Murphy was everywhere. Sometimes I’d whine and say, “Who is she? I wanna see her, too. Why can’t I see her?” My mom would just laugh and tease me, saying, “You just missed her. She had to leave.” As I grew older, I realized this was just Mom’s way of politely saying . . . she had to pee. And her playing it up was typical Mom behavior. She thought it was so funny to stress me out over it. Rather than say something “vulgar” like “I have to pee,” even though it was the truth, she chose to confuse the hell out of 5-year-old boy. Thanks, Mom. Her friends were in on it, too. They’d say, “You’re going to see Miss Murphy? Tell her I said hello, and I’ll see her later!” My mom about it. with, just Murphy.”

still says it today. Now we laugh Occasionally I say to whoever I’m for fun, “Gotta go see MISTER Some of my friends think I’m loco.

My mom, like many of my friends and co-workers, hardly ever speaks openly about topics that are “improper,” like peeing, or adultery, or being gay. She never has. I don’t remember her ever discussing things much that made her squirm. But why? This month marks the 42nd anniversary of The Stonewall Riots. In 1969 people rarely spoke openly about anything controversial, like being gay, but things were about to change dramatically. Gays were frequently treated like second class citizens, unable to walk freely and openly and let others know they were gay, even on the streets of uber progressive New York City. There were and still 8 davidatlanta

When I was very young, just a kid, I used to think my mom had a friend that only she could see. Almost every day she’d say, “Excuse me, I need to go see Miss Murphy.”

FACING MY FEARS

are a lot of gays who lived in Greenwich Village, and at that time many felt safe and comfortable gathering in secret at The Stonewall Inn. There was no Gay Pride flag out front, or loud music spilling into the street, or drag queens welcoming guests at the door. It was a private place, a quiet place. New York City had passed laws against homosexuality in public and private businesses. However, people wanted to drink, and bars were so numerous and temporary that the police simply could not patrol them all. When the police did go in and harass the gays at The Stonewall Inn, they fought back. For six days angry crowds pelted the cops with loose change, bottles and more. When the Riots ended, it sparked the beginning of a long, still ongoing, battle for equality. Even though we have come a long way since the Stonewall Riots, things are far from perfect. Unfortunately, too many people are still uncomfortable talking about all things gay. I do it myself, and I’m not proud of it. In fact, it makes me sad sometimes. Just the other day I was talking to someone I had just met. She and her husband asked me what I do for a living. I said I teach violin lessons, work part time at a restaurant and write for a magazine. When she asked me what kind of magazine, I cringed and said, “Oh, it’s a local entertainment magazine” and left it at that, quickly changing the subject. Will we ever live in a society where everyone is comfortable around gays? Where we don’t feel the need to censor ourselves? Where we feel safe being who we are? I hope so. I’m working on my own struggles. In the meantime, say hello to Miss Murphy if you see her. I wonder if she’s ok with gays.

The Brent Star Report

L

Lauren LaMasters

egendary Lauren LaMasters and I were in a good mood backstage of our Saturday show (Tijuana Garage in lil 5 pts). Of course, I’m always in good spirits when it’s time for my birthday celebration week that started on the 22nd, then at my Bingo night at Matador in East Atlanta(Thursday 23rd), then Cowtippers 8pm (Friday 24th), then finish at our show Tijuana Garage on Saturday. Lauren was in a good mood simply because she’s learned how important it is to count your blessings. She feels great now that she recovered from months of pain from a small back injury, plus she has a new home, loving friends and well, she’s happy to be Lauren! Everyone loves Ms. LaMasters, not just for her performances, but she’s HILARIOUS backstage. Charlie Brown calls her “The Entertainer’s entertainer”. If you let her, she’ll entertain you for 2 hours while the ‘other’ show is going on. Another nickname for Lauren back in the day was “Video Vixen” because of how she would watch a video then bring to the stage the same exact replica of that particular entertainer’s look and style. Girlfriend can make some costumes let me tell you. “I always felt that if I wanted something bad enough, I’d find a way to make a costume, honey give me some rubber bands and a paper clip, I’ll make it happen”, she says. While we wait for our turn to go on stage, I figured we might as well turn this conversation into a column. Let’s talk. Brent: So let’s go back in time right quick…why did you start doing drag? Lauren: Actually I can remember back when I was between 6 and 8 years old putting on my mom’s clothes and lipstick thinking I was Ginger Grant from Gilligan’s Island. But what made get into drag you ask “Mr. Star”? A long time ago back in 1912…no seriously I went to a drag show for my first time at a bar in North Carolina, in which I hardly ever do. One night I just stood there in awe as this beautiful queen came out, her name was Mellissa Montgomery and she would pretty much just glide across the stage and I thought ‘Wow, that’s cool, I wanna do that”. The very next week, they had a talent show, and just like when I was 8, I’d did my own costume, wig and makeup and went out there and did it. Brent: You mean you started off already knowing how to apply your own make up. Laura: Oh honey I did it like I did when I was 8, so pretty much I just put on some mascara and lipstick… you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t Lisa LisaBrent: and The Cult Jam! (we cackle) Omg I remember that group. Ok, so how did you go from that night to doing drag in Atlanta? Laura: I came down here with Dj Eric Hayes (R.I.P.) for an audition to be on the cast for a club called Lipsticks, and I got the job.

14 davidatlanta

Brent: Work it LaMasters…but how did you go from that to being one of the world famous cast members of Charlie Brown’s show at Backstreets? Laura: Well the gig I got at Lipsticks closed after about a few months after I started working there. Then I started just working for tips, then eventually got on another cast, and later picked up a couple of my own shows. Then I was asked to be apart of the Charlie Brown Cabaret. I was skeptical at first, but after eventually doing it for 8 years, I think I made the right choice. Brent: Back to present day, I hear that every once in awhile you and the other cast members do a “reunion” show at the Jungle. How’s that going for you? Laura: Great. It feels like I’m back home everytime we come together. Just to see everyone is wonderful, it’s like family. We have a good crowd with a lot of regulars from the Backstreet days who also come out and enjoy the nostalgia as well. Brent: Who’s your favorite mainstream entertainer and your favorite drag entertainer that you admire? Laura: Madonna andBrent: Cher! The crowd at Tijuana Love to see you do her! Laua: Yea well her too, and Ashley Kruiz in the drag world. She actually got me doing Cher. . Brent: What advice would you give someone who wants to do drag? Laura: Be yourself and whatever you want, go for it. Put your heart and soul into it and you’ll be rewarded for that. Thank you Lauren and keep counting your blessings. I think that’s why I make such a bid deal about my bday every year. I’m happy to be here and be who I am. Until next week, don’t read the girls, .instead, read The Brent Star Report! Where to catch Brent Star: Birthday celebration week, Thursday at Matador Cantina (925 Garrett St), Friday Cowippers (then pool party), Saturdays at Tijuana Garage, Sunday back at Cowtippers. w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / Mr.BrentStar

Things are pretty tricky at the moment, especially as far as your social life is concerned. Be extra careful when you’re dealing with people you don’t know inside and out. Not everyone is the real deal.

Whether you’re taking a new gig, moving into a new place or buying a car, read every word of the fine print. If it doesn’t make sense to you, find a friend who knows their way around legalese.

TAURUS If you’ve been meaning to get something off your chest, now is the time to do it. You won’t get a better opportunity to express yourself clearly. Besides, whatever you say will be well received.

CAPRICORN It is a great time to explore your artistic side or discover something new about one of your friends. You have a lot of good energy breezing through you at the moment, so work it!

GEMINI If you’re not ready, say so — no matter what it is. You may offend someone in the short term, but your reputation for honesty and directness is more important than all those surface concerns.

AQUARIUS You will have to deal with people who are just a little too spacey for you, but at least they are harmless. Try not to be too mean to them, no matter how tempting that may be.

CANCER

PISCES

If you feel a hankering to gather your gang and head out into the world, that’s exactly what you should do. There’s a lot to be gained if you’re traveling with the pack — you won’t get lost in the crowd.

You’ll move through the week at an amazing clip — you should be able to sweet talk just about anyone into joining your shenanigans. Expect the good times to keep coming all week long!

Leo You’re starting to leave the remnants of your old persona behind as you move toward being the person you really want to be. It’s liberating, if not a little scary. Luckily, you know what to do next. VIRGO Someone needs to hear from the real you, so open up already! It may not be the one you expect, though, so look around and figure out who needs to get the word.

LIBRA Your work — or lack thereof — will be a much bigger deal than usual at the moment. Make sure you have it all taken care of before the situation spins out of control

SCORPIO Be extra careful when you’re dealing with strangers — and not because they’re dangerous. You may accidentally open up too much … not that it’s inherently bad. It’s just that some people don’t understand. 38 davidatlanta

ME CALIENTA Y LO SABE

M

Bitch Session

I am realizing that most Atlanta bears are just twinks who are older, bigger and harrier. Same mentality, behavior and games. No thanks. I went to my favorite gay leather bar this weekend to find it crawlin’ with college girls. WTF? Ain’t that other bar good enough for you anymore? I’m tired of looking at dog shit at the park. Clean up after your dog, you disgusting, lazy, arrogant prick. No glove, no love. Tragic. Trainwreck. That’s all I can say about you and your life, bless your heart. Yes, we know you shaved your cooter. That is all you have talked about for 2 hours. How much bush did you have, bitch? I get attached easily, but I forget faster.

Ok, sure you have a bubble butt. Personally, I have always thought it was fat, but . . . really. So I went to the gym for an hour, tanned, picked out and pressed a cute outfit for “this?” I should have ordered a pizza and posted on CraigsList! You don’t have a job. All you want to do is party have no responsibilities. You drink everywhere you go. Have some self-respect and respect for your friends and their lives, asshole. I can’t believe you stuck your finger up my butt while I was sleeping! Do you think you know me well enough now? There is still room on my back. Do you want to stick another knife in? Would that make you happy?

Wake up and smell the turkey chili bitch, it’s burnin. Have fun cleaning up the mess you’ve made “playing” restaurant and don’t worry about me stealing your recipes. No one wants them. Getting soy milk in my Starbucks drink doesn’t mean I’m gay, it means I’m lactose intolerant, you judgmental queens. Taking it up the ass with a smile on my face means I’m gay. I wasn’t talking shit about you behind your back. Everything I said is true, and I said it in front of you and to a few of our mutual friends. Get over it.

Wow! I am surprised to see your face at this hour. Shouldn’t you be bent over somewhere by now?

I can only please one person a day. Today is not your day. Oh wait, yesterday was your day. You missed it. I don’t get it. One minute you’re telling me how awesome and beautiful I am. The next minute you’re telling me what a fucking retard you think I am. I don’t think I’m asking too much. I just want my girlfriend to pay attention to me when I sext her. Listen you selfish S.O.B., if someone’s friend offers to pay for your dinner and asks you to leave the tip, do it. Be thankful instead of

complaining and acting like a spoiled bitch.

Gotta Bitch?

? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitc ch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? ? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitc ch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch?
