his week marks the end of a long overdue break-up, the conclusion to a love-hate relationship that many of us have had for almost a decade.
I’m not talking about ending things with a controlling boyfriend, irritating co-worker, or even an overlyaggressive friend with benefits. No, it’s time to say goodbye to a guilty pleasure that I will miss but revisit again. It’s bittersweet to think that in a few days the very last Harry Potter film will be released. No more new adventures at Hogwarts. No more watching or reading about Harry fighting Death Eaters or searching for horcruxes. No more new scenes of whining Ron, bitchy Hermione or passive-aggressive Harry. Like many long-term relationships, this one is coming to an end. Time for all of us to move on. It has been great while it lasted. According to movies. yahoo.com the Harry Potter movies, all eight of them, have employed over 2,000 people on and off screen. They have earned more than $6.3 billion so far. The franchise also continues to make money through home movies, merchandise, video games and more. I confess that Harry Potter was the first book series I ever truly fell in love with, and I was an English major! I resisted reading them for a long time. Those books are so freaking long! I didn’t start until the third or fourth book came out, and that was only because my much younger cousin, Danny, urged me to read them. “You are going to love these books,” he said over and over. He was so right. Once I started, I had to read the whole series, at times ignoring my priorities. When each new book came out, I was there, standing in line with kids with lightning bolts painted on their foreheads and wearing capes. It hardly seems like almost ten years have gone by. There have been eight films. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have magically aged before our eyes. At times it pissed me off when details were left out of the films, or glossed over, but I forgave the filmmakers. The films are already so long after all. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Quidditch played on 8 davidatlanta

film. Or Hagrid’s creatures. Or Professor Snape’s snarl and black hair. These characters have been portrayed perfectly, in my opinion. And what is it about Harry Potter that gay fans, in particular, love so much? Maybe it’s all the homoeroticism? For example, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince we see Slughorn dressed up as an old lady in drag, and we see a sort of intimate relationship between Dumbledore and Harry. At one point Dumbledore notes that Harry needs to shave because he is “no longer a boy.” Dumbledore also seems very jealous of Harry spending so much time with Hermione. And Dumbledore does have very colorful, fashionable outfits and that special “flaming” multi-colored pet, a phoenix named Fawkes. Things that make you go hmmm. In 2007 author J.K. Rowling did, in fact, say publicly that she “always thought of Dumbledore as gay.” Some interesting suggestive back story about him is revealed in the last book. I’m curious to see if any of that makes it into the film. Then there’s all that pent-up, some say sexual, tension between Harry and Draco Malfoy. How about the love triangle between Harry, Hermione and Ron? Ron gets jealous of Hermione, and Hermione gets jealous of Harry. And doesn’t Luna Lovegood make the perfect fag hag? Just sayin! The Harry Potter storyline isn’t as overtly gaythemed as it could be. It is, in fact, geared toward kids, teens, and young adults. But that’s okay with me. And so what if Dumbledore is gay. Millions of people have read and loved the stories, and most have never even considered that Dumbledore was gay. Most don’t care. Even though I know how the story ends, I’ll be there to watch the last film. Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for giving us such a wonderful way to escape, and for such a memorable, loving relationship.

The Brent Star Report
Ashley Kruiz I believe it was Pride 2004 at the famous Starlight Cabaret show (back in the good ole’ days when Pride was in June) that I was in awe of a certain entertainer whom I didn’t know. She came out in this old school country slash vaudeville looking costume doing Pasty Cline. I was like “who is that?”. Then right before our eyes, she snatched that shit off and became Annie Lennox. I was like “damn, WHO is she, I love her?!”. It wasn’t until later when I realized “oh yea, that’s that same chic from Backstreets, Ashley Kruiz”. Yea, this was before I got into the scene so child, I didn’t know any better. I also later realized why Charlie Brown would always introduce her to the stage as “the many faces of Ashley Kruiz”. Ms. Kuriz can be many things, like Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, Madonna, or even Mary J. Blige (I think she did Lil Kim before too..but that was in the shower).. If you’re lucky to know her behind the scenes, she’s more like the entertainer whom is my favorite of her “many faces”, Mariah Carey, because she’s simply sweet as HONEY. I work a lot with her at Burkharts and you know me, since we’re already backstage waiting to go on, it’s past time for me to interview this pageant queen. The one and only (in Charlie Brown’s voice) ASHLEY KRUUUUUIIIIZZZZ!. Brent: Hey child. Let’s start off with a 3 part question: Tell us where did you come from, what was that thing or that moment that made you decide to do drag and how long have been doing it? Discuss. Ashley: I was born in Huntsville AL, but grew up in Frankfort KY. I really never had the desire to do drag, it wasn’t until one stormy night in “1986” in Frankfort when I let a friend of mine, Chelsea Pearl (the reigning Miss Continental Plus and my drag mother), put me in drag. We were “really” bored with nothing to do! LOL The transformation is what really did it for me b/c I realized I could be anybody I wanted to be! My own friends didn’t recognize me. Brent: What were the steps that lead you to the cast of Charlie Brown’s Cabaret? Ashley: I wouldn’t call it “steps” that I took, because when I first moved to Atlanta in 1989, Charlie Brown’s Cabaret didn’t even exist yet. I came to Atlanta and within 2 months was hired to be on cast at Lipstix, which included a cast of 12 of the nation’s best entertainers and elaborate productions. It was strictly a “Show Bar”. I worked as I do now, at numerous clubs in the city as well as out of town. I was one of the original “Funky Diva’s” at the Armory, then Charlie Browns Cabaret. I left in 1995 to join the cast of LaBoy Lafemme in Louisville KY at the Connection for 5 years then in 2000 I moved back to Atlanta. Charlie helped me during my transition by booking me on Sundays then the week I was moving back Lilly White decided to leave the cast, Charlie called and offered me the position. I also picked up a position at Blakes on the Park on Wed nights with 14 davidatlanta
Lena Lust. So it just seemed to fall in place. Brent: You’ve won a lot of pageants, what titles do you have and which is your favorite? Ashley: Way too many titles to name Mr. Star, but some of my favorites are Miss Gay Orlando, Miss Florida USA, Miss Georgia USA, Miss Georgia Continental, Miss TN Continental, Miss Vogue, Miss Florida Renaissance, Miss Renaissance, Miss National. But my most fav would be Miss Hotlanta International. The Hotlanta River Expo was the party of all parties!! and I was Queen! LOL Brent: Damn! That’s just your ‘favorite’ list? You have more titles than RuPaul have freckles. Ok so, how are those BACKSTREET reunion shows coming along at the Jungle? Ashley: Oh I love the Backstreet Reunion shows, it’s the closest thing we have to the good o’ days! The next one will be Thanksgiving weekend. (The Saturday after Thanksgiving.) Brent: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about drag over the years? Ashley: The most important thing I’ve learned doing drag? Hmmm, well, my longevity in the business not only comes from my talent and ambition, but it also comes from respect. Everyone deserves respect. Brent: Amen. Any advice for the new girls? Ashley: Not sure about advice but I’d like to share with you that “Pageants” don’t define who you are as an entertainer, they are the best way to promote yourself. Remember, it’s not always about winning, it’s the journey you took to get there. Pageants opened alot of doors for me, not only bookings across the US. I appeared on Phil Donahue, Jenny Jones, and Maury. Ouch. Well, I think Shavonna B. Brooks just called her out on stage, so until next week, don’t read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report!
Where to catch Brent Star: Thursdays at Matador Cantina (925 Garrett St), Saturdays at Tijuana Garage, Sunday at Cowtippers, occasionally at Burkharts and everywhere else that pays. w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / Mr.BrentStar

he second season of Logo’s “Drag U” is in full force, and it is “new and improved,” according to Atlanta’s own Mariah Balenciaga, who stars as a professor in the show. Balenciaga just finished competing in “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season Three.” “The jewelry, the shoes, the hair . . . it’s all absolutely phenomenal,” said Balenciaga. “It’s the first season on steroids, or hormones, I should say. It’s drag with a heart. There will always be drag queens performing on stages, but this is a chance for viewers to see the softer side of drag. Not everything is so catty. Viewers will still get that drag queen spice, though.” Originally from Gainesville, Georgia, Mariah has lived in Atlanta and been performing as a drag entertainer for eleven years, seven of which have been in Midtown. Being a professor is not the only thing she is up to these days. Her star is shining. “I’m travelling and touring, giving performances and making appearances,” said Balenciaga, but we’ve pretty much wrapped up recording ‘Drag U’ and I’m just focusing on working and making sure Mariah can be the best she can be.” As for “Drag U,” Balenciaga said she is very proud to be on the show. She said it’s a show that really has something for everyone who watches. “This show has the fashion and the jewelry for the gay children, and then it has the heart for women and families,” said Balenciaga. “I’ve noticed a lot more families tuning in to ‘Drag U’ this season.” David Magazine: What exactly is “Drag U?” Mariah: Ultimately, the show is really about selfimprovement, self-reflection, and rediscovering who you really want to be and who you were meant to be. The professors are drag queen alumni from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ and we work with biological women. We use drag as the ultimate metaphor to reveal to them that no matter what they have been through in life they can still be fabulous and happy, and that there is a way to cope with everything in life. David Magazine: How often are you on the show? Will we see every past ‘Drag Race’ contestant as professors? Mariah: There are not enough episodes to feature all of the girls from past seasons, so there are just a few from each season. From my season (Season Three), there are Manila Luzon, Carmen Carrere and myself. I believe there are three or four girls from each of the other seasons as professors. All in all we have about twelve professors. I like how they replace at least one of the professors in each episode, which kind of shakes up the dynamics and keeps it interesting and fresh. That will be something fans will enjoy, seeing some of their favorite queens from different seasons interact. Like seeing how Raven will interact with me or how JuJu Bee interacts with Manila. It’s really funny to watch.
“I was a little shocked myself when I heard about some of the women on this show. I didn’t expect to be touched the way I was. One of the stories really touched me personally with a woman who is about my mom’s age. It kind of hit home.” Mariah: She is our Dean of Drag. She is an absolute pleasure to work with. She’s even crazier in person. David Magazine: It looks like you will have lots of guest celebrities throughout the season. Tell us more. Mariah: Oh my God, yes. For example, Molly Ringwald is going to be on there. And Charo! That little bundle of energy. I don’t know where she gets it from. She has got to be one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. Stay tuned to see who all will be on there. David Magazine: Do you feel more relaxed or able to be yourself than when you were competing in ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race?’ Mariah: I enjoy ‘Drag U’ so much more because of heart behind it, but also because when I’m in competition mode I’m much more intense and focused. So I can’t really enjoy the moment. With ‘Drag U’ I was able to enjoy the whole process. I could let my guard down. David Magazine: Where do you get the contestants for ‘Drag U?’ Are there stories real? Mariah: These stories are very real. Some of the contestants apply to be on the show. Maybe they have reached that bridge and don’t know how to cross it. They need some help and reach out to ‘Drag U’ to be that catalyst. Some contestants are nominated by their loved ones, spouses, kids or friends. I was a little shocked myself when I heard about some of the women. I didn’t expect to be touched the way I was. One of the stories really touched me personally with a woman who is about my mom’s age. It kind of hit home. Not all the contestants are in the doldrums. They are in different stages in their lives. Some are trying to hold onto a brave face and keep their families together. Others are kind of goofy and lost. They have lost some direction. That’s where we come in and try to give them the steering wheel and try to get them back on track.
David Magazine: What role does Lady Bunny play on the show? davidatlanta 21

David Magazine: What are some common mistakes that women make in trying to make themselves look sexy? Mariah: Bad posture, self-doubt and concentrating too hard. David Magazine: How do you feel about Raja winning Season Three? Were you surprised? Mariah: I can’t say I was surprised, but congratulations to her and the other top finalists. It was a life-changing experience, and I’m definitely interested to see what they have in store for all of us the rest of the year. David Magazine: Other than being on ‘Drag U,’ what other surprising or fun things have you been able to do as a result of being seen on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race?’ Mariah: I had my own character made and my own trademark. I’m pretty much just building my brand and continuing to do that. I’ve been able to be with the other ladies a lot. The whole experience has been so much more than I expected.
David Magazine: Do you have any memorable or favorite stories? Mariah: There was my little diva, honey. She went through some heartaches and hard life issues, but she was still happy and taking care of everybody. She was just trying to address some personal issues before they became poisonous. Sometimes in life we are so busy that we don’t get a chance to really grieve or be frustrated or be angry. So I think this was her chance to get it all out. David Magazine: In your opinion what makes a woman sexy? Mariah: Confidence, a smile, and a nasty pair of heels!
22 davidatlanta
David Magazine: How did you come up with your stage name? Mariah: The person who discovered me, who asked if I would be interested in competing, like eleven years ago, came up with the name. It was really easy to remember. Elijah is my boy name, which is similar to Mariah. It makes it real easy. David Magazine: How do you describe your style as a performer? Mariah: I do a lot of like Vanity Six and Sex Kitten. I serve sex and pussycat when I hit the stage. I’m not really a ballad girl. I like high-energy, interactive songs. David Magazine: What local performers do you
admire? Mariah: I definitely love and admire the energy of Shawwna Brooks, Charlie Brown, and the cast of Stars of the Century on Monday nights at Jungle. They are all wonderful entertainers. David Magazine: What are some of the biggest misconceptions about drag queens? Mariah: For one, that we are connecting fetishes for people and that we are all flamboyant. For me drag is larger than life, but I know plenty of straight men who are flamboyant. Not everything is a lip pop and a ‘hey, hey, sister girl, girlfriend’ with a finger snap. As soon as we start talking to some women, they start rolling their necks and speaking a certain way. I’m like, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ Apparently we bring out an extra ferocity in some women.
heart, I really thought that I was going to make it. Once I want something and have it in my head, I know I am going to get it. I had so many things in my life on hold while I was waiting to hear if I made it. Once I got the call that I made it, I had only two weeks to pack up and head out. I took that as part of the race! David Magazine: What is it like working with RuPaul? Mariah: Her energy is amazing. She is who she truly is. I didn’t feel any different energy than I’ve seen in her performances and interactions with other people. She is definitely genuinely a warm person. Usually people look different in person than on TV. She looks exactly like she does on TV! I was flabber-gagging. I was pleasantly surprised. In the competitions it’s about beauty, talent, attitude, presence, the whole package. David Magazine: What’s next for you?
David Magazine: What is the biggest misconception about you?
Mariah: I’ve been traveling a lot and really haven’t had the opportunity to focus on any deeper projects yet, but I have a couple things on the back burner. I’ll say more about that later. I definitely want to launch my website and Mariah: I guess, since my presence is larger than life, people think I am a stereotypical drag queen with a nasty work on my music. I want to release a single, a club mix kind of Lil Kim-style. It’s going to be really exciting. I’m attitude and a chip on my shoulder. When people meet me or hear me speak, they are often very surprised. I’ve also designing some T-shirts. I’m like Mariah, the octopus. been told I am very personable and welcoming to people. I need about eight hands to do all the things I want to do. David Magazine: What was the process like for you making it onto “RuPaul’s Drag Race?” Mariah: Right after the last episode of season two I went online and applied as soon as they opened the application process. I gagged when I found out that we only had three days to get a lot of information together. I think the hardest part was waiting for the final phone call. In my

eing a contestant on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is a huge deal for a drag entertainer. It opens doors that some performers may never see open.
Just ask Stacy Layne Matthews. As the show’s first Native-American contestant, she said she is very proud of the opportunity she had, especially being plus-size and from such a small community in North Carolina. Now that her experience on the show is over, she is looking forward to new opportunities in show business. Matthews has been invited to perform in places all over from Alaska to New York.
Stacy Layne: I’m from a small town in North Carolina. I’m the only Native American to be on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’ I’m from the Lumbee Tribe. People call my hometown ‘Back Swamp,’ but it is actually called Lumberton, NC. It’s about an hour and fifteen minutes from Wilmington. I have a huge family. My grandmother has seven brothers and six sisters, so you can imagine a lot of little kids running around. Back Swamp is a community where basically everyone is related to me. I went to college for a few years at UNC Pembroke. David Magazine: What was your process for getting onto ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race?’
“This is my first television role, other than on RuPaul’s Drag Race,” said Matthews. “I enjoy doing drag, especially representing the plus size community, but I kind of want to branch out and show I’m not just a drag queen. I’ve been doing theater practically all my life. I thought doing ‘Out Life’ would be a great idea.”
Stacy Layne: Honestly, I just took a chance. I didn’t think I’d get on. I almost missed the deadline. My cousin helped me put together my audition video. There’s a part of the video where I’m doing a runway walk down the highway at 7:00 a.m. It was kind of last minute, but I applied and they called me from Logo in a few days. I’m so glad I did it. My family and friends always saw something in me. I think I’ve made them proud. It has taken ten years to get some of my family members to my club to see my show, so this gave them more confidence to come out and support me. In the Bible belt it isn’t easy for a lot of people to support the art of female impersonation.
David Magazine: Tell us about your role as Miss Monet on “Out Life.”
David Magazine: What was your favorite challenge or memory from the show?
Stacy Layne: My character is a club owner. She is a very sassy plus size drag queen and entertainer. She has lots of attitude. She is very confident and loves her club. She’ll do anything to protect it. It’s in the same neighborhood as the salon, where much of the action takes place on the show.
Stacy Layne: Yes, during the pilot that was one thing we focused on. It should be interesting.
Stacy Layne: I think the celebrity impersonation challenge was my favorite. On the show they made it seem like I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I was originally going to do Monique anyway. She has always been my inspiration. It paid off. I actually have my own Broadway show now playing Monique. It’s called ‘The Homonique Show’ and it’s playing at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York. It’s the same theater that Joan Rivers plays in. My show will run for a few nights to see if people like it. If so, they may try to make it a regular thing.
David Magazine: How did you get involved with ‘Out Life?’
David Magazine: Who do you keep in touch with from your season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race?’
Stacy Layne: I was talking with one of the cast members, who thought it would be a good idea for me to be on the show. We started taking about it more and made it happen.
Stacy Layne: I stay in touch with Mimi Imfurst and Shangela. I love Shangela. I talk to Phoenix every now and then and Alexis and India, sometimes Mariah.
David Magazine: How long have you been a drag entertainer?
David Magazine: How do you feel about Raja winning this past season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race?’
Stacy Layne: I’ve been doing theater since I was around twelve years old. I’ve been doing drag almost ten years. I started in high school doing high school and special events. I even did a few things in middle school, so I guess I started pretty early. I don’t know if you’d call it drag. I never thought I’d end up where I am as a drag entertainer. It’s kind of overwhelming. I’ve had some great opportunities.
Stacy Layne: I appreciate her art and the way she interprets it, but I just feel like she is more about fashion. She should probably be more into fashion and style in magazines and fashion shows rather than on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ but I’m happy for her.
David Magazine: What are some common misconceptions about drag queens?
Stacy Layne: I’m also doing a guest spot in ‘My Big Gay Italian Wedding,’ another Broadway show. I’m also working on some music in hopes of coming out with an album. I want to go another direction than dance mixes, like a lot of the past contestants from the show are doing. I want to focus more on vocals and R&B, something a little more serious.
She also just finished filming the pilot of “Out Life,” a new dramedy in the works. She will play “Miss Monet,” a character she says she is excited about playing.
David Magazine: Will you be performing on ‘Out Life?’
Stacy Layne: That we are all heavy partiers and into the drug scene. I think people look at it the wrong way. I think we love to have a good time, but I’m professional. I go out and do my shows and have a good time. I like to have a cocktail every now and then, but I like to keep it professional. David Magazine: What are some common misconceptions about you? Stacy Layne: That I’m not approachable, maybe because of the way I do my makeup. People think maybe I’m not going to talk to them when they come up to me, but I try to be nice and humble and actually carry on a conversation with them. Having been on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ I think people are surprised that I will talk to them because they feel like just because someone is on TV they think they are too good to talk to people, but I am so NOT that way. I love my fans and talk to everyone. David Magazine: Tell us more about your background.
David Magazine: What other projects are you working on other than ‘Outlife?’
Oops! In our cover story on “Out Life” a few weeks ago we failed to mention that the writer of the show is Tonina Kelly Cooper and the producer is Amber L. DeVos. Also, Stacy Layne Mathews, from “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season Three,” plays “Miss Monet” on the show. davidatlanta 29

It’s one of those crazy weeks in which you know you’re right, but you’re having a hard time convincing anyone that they should listen. You might just need to roll your eyes and practice saying ‘I told you so.’
You’re feeling so good that you want to grab a friend and take them along for the ride — wherever it is you’re going. You’ll be surprised and delighted at the positive response, so go for it!
TAURUS
CAPRICORN
Some piece of news or cool idea is going to hit you soon and make you take a new attitude toward the world and how you get along in it. A love connection may be attached to it too.
You have a lot of things you want to do this week, but most of them involve helping other people — so that means you’re working on their schedules. Kick back until they call for you.
GEMINI Your friends have your back once again — but this time, it feels tighter and more real than it used to. Something is different and you can’t put your finger on it, but you sure do like it. CANCER You can’t really figure out exactly how you’re doing it, but somehow you are moving a lot faster than you’re used to. It could be a love thing or it could just be work, but you’re making it sappy. Leo You can make yourself heard in pretty much any situation — and people are going to like what they hear. It’s a great time to meet new folks and see if you can chat up the cutest of them. VIRGO You are going to impulsively buy something that will most likely not live up to your expectations. Perhaps a friend goaded you into it. You can’t do much about it except brace for the bill. LIBRA If you’re dating someone, expect big fun all weekend long. If not, you may very well be by the time you get up Monday morning — your romantic side is practically radioactive with good energy. SCORPIO You feel as if a leash is yanking you back as you try to run away from your problems. You need to turn around and face them directly this time — then the leash will fall off all by itself. 38 davidatlanta
AQUARIUS No matter what you do, money issues keep popping up. Dig deeper. Now is a good time to sit down with some paper or a spreadsheet and figure out how to fix it once and for all. You can make it work to your advantage. PISCES You’re all fired up with good ideas and positive energy — and you can’t wait to put it all to use. You are way out of the box right now, and you should be able to sweep up the cuties at your leisure.

Bitch Session
Please continue “not eating” then maybe you’ll graduate from the Women’s section to the Girl’s section in the department store. I’ve always said “the bigger the dick the bigger the asshole,” and you were no exception to that rule. You need to stop telling people you’re Cuban, or I will. You’re just a Mexican with some money, and an education.
I’m not a bitch. That’s just a part of my charm. Don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the weekend. Friends are like underwear .... Some crawl up your ass... Some snap under pressure... Some don’t have the strength to hold you up... Some get a little twisted... Some are your favorite... Some are cheap and just plainnasty... And some actually do cover your ass when u need them too. Are you still considered a lady if you pull your skirt down? Thought not, you tramp!
Don’t get mad when someone asks you if you are masculine or feminine. If I wanted to date a woman, I’d be straight.
What’s the deal with you talking about your hair all the time? I’m sure there’s more to life than that. Flaming queens and butch dykes are the reason gays have a bad rep. Dress and act normal for once and you might make real friends. I’m sorry, but when a bartender or server has bad teeth or body odor, I lose my appetite. Will you please ask your boyfriend to stop asking me over every time you go out of town? He is ugly. Gays are vampires. They suck the life right out of you. Just because you’re in a shirt and tie you think you’re better than everybody else.
