Bad Drag, Big Hearts 15th Annual Possums Show raises spirits and cash for Atlanta Pride and the Phillip Rush Center

t’s probably no secret that Atlanta’s drag community has long been dedicated to raising funds for worthy causes, and everyone knows that the best parties with the most fabulous people only happen at night. So, it’s only natural that night is when one local group of drag performers will be coming out once again to strut their tails for charity. The 15th annual East Point Possums show is set for Saturday, June 16, from 7-11 p.m. Once again, it takes place in its namesake environs of gay-friendly downtown East Point, Georgia. [At press time, performers and sponsors were still being finalized.] East Point “has the most unique blend of people,” said the Possums’ Rick Westbrook (aka “Rapture Divine Cox”). “You’ll see little old blue-haired ladies, straight couples, gay couples. It’s a very diverse, very gay friendly community. East Point has been so incredible to us, and our turnouts are always huge.”

As always, the East Point Possums show is a madcap gathering of amateur and professional drag performers pooling their irreverent talents for the benefit of local non-profit organizations. This year, the Possums have once again named the Atlanta Pride Committee as their key beneficiary, which will split monies raised with the Phillip Rush Center.

Atlanta’s only LGBT Center The Center – located in Atlanta – is home to GLBT organizations including Georgia Equality, Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative, MEGA Family Project, and Circle of Grace Community Church. It also regularly serves as meeting space for a number of local support groups, public health fairs, and political and social events. Westbrook pointed out that in discerning which local non-profits to designate as proceed recipients each year, calls are put out to various local organizations to submit bids. From those applicants, beneficiaries are selected. “It’s always something that benefits the community,” said Westbrook. Westbrook stressed the importance that the East Point Possums show’s outdoor setting, lack

of need to rent facilities, and sponsors play in maximizing proceeds for the beneficiaries. “We obviously have a very low overhead,” he said. “It’s a free show. You only pay if you want to drink [or tip performers].” The Possums show is also an opportunity for many of Atlanta’s hottest drag superstars – little-known and well-known – to take to the same stage for an evening of outrageous comedic revelry. This year’s show will boast a whopping 28 gals. “We always tell everybody we have the largest drag show in the Southeast. People will say there are a lot of shows that may have much bigger audiences, but we have the biggest single show, especially with 28 performers this year,” said Westbrook. He noted that the East Point Possums is where several of today’s biggest drag divas like Alexandria Martin, Gigi Monroe, and Genre got their starts.

Many of the dedicated Possums performers from some of the earliest shows are still acting up all these years later. But to help keep the shenanigans fresh each year, the East Point Possums committee endeavors to check out the newest ladies on the local drag scene and invite them to perform, according to Westbrook. If your yen for drag theatrics sways to the more regal and realistic, however, you’re best to look elsewhere. At a Possums show, the emphasis is on campiness, craziness, and ridiculous fun. There’s little to no feminity to be found in this troupe. After all, their slogan is “Doing good work through bad drag!” Bad drag though it may be, however, these ladies have big hearts. But it’s not merely the sense of camaraderie that they share as comic performers that drives their mission to serve their community. in general, could be attributed to a shared sense of feeling like outsiders in a conservative area.

“Being a native Atlantan, I have to say it’s just being in the Bible Belt that we realize this is maybe the best way to get people’s attention,” said Westbrook. “We want to raise awareness and proceeds and get people to think, and it’s just easier for me to do that as Rapture Divine Cox.”

One year, Jenkins, Thurman, Jeffrey, and Westbrook performed a flamboyant “Moulin Rouge” production number. When Sanford announced the group and told the crowd they were from East Point, spontaneously naming them the East Point Possums, a living legend was born.

Humble beginnings To truly appreciate how big and dynamic the annual East Point Possums show has become in this, its 15th year, it’s important to consider its humble beginnings. In mid June 1998, four longtime friends – Chuck Jenkins, Chesley Thurman, John Jeffrey, and Westbrook – received invitations for a party to celebrate Independence Day. A unique kink was issued with those invitations: the party’s host, David Sanford, wanted some of his guests to also perform a drag show. The friends rose to the challenge and set off on a madcap quest to acquire their attire. After finding the right ensembles, Jenkins would become “Rococo Baroque,” Thurman became “Dina Daintymouth,” Jeffrey sashayed as “Prissy Cilla,” and Westbrook, as “Shenitta Lott,” served as backstage dragboy. At that first impromptu performance, a tip jar was passed around and quickly netted a hefty sum. The performers that night decided to donate the 14 | davidatlanta

As word spread about the party – which for the guests was as much about celebrating queer independence as it was American independence – the number of attendees began to grow each year until it ultimately became too big for its informal backyard setting. The amount of donations that were being collected at the annual Independence Day parties also grew too large to be given to PALS anonymously. In response, Sanford passed the glittering flame on to the Possums, who moved the event to downtown East Point and decided to hold it in June to take advantage of less sweltering temperatures. Now, fifteen years after its inception, the East Point Possums show’s popularity continues to grow by leaps and bounds. It is one of the most eagerly anticipated pre-Atlanta Pride events of the season, and has to date netted tens of thousands of dollars for local non-profits that serve the GLBT community.

If the term “Peach Party” conjures up an image of a sedate evening on an antebellum plantation, you’re a bit off the mark. Instead, the Peach Party is Atlanta’s answer to circuit parties like the White Party. For this brand-new event, organizers have landed major national and international talent across a variety of Atlanta clubs. DJs include New York City’s Sin Morera, Atlanta’s own Corey D, Micky Friedmann from Berlin, Los Angeles’ Paulo and Abel from Miami. Additionally, RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Phoenix will be performing, along with her backup dancers. DJ Micky Friedmann Finds Atlanta Boys ‘Very, Very Sexy’

s the Peach Party heats up, DJ Micky Friedmann will be one of two DJs playing at Saturday’s Day Party at Opera. Friedmann brings a distinctly European flavor to Peach Party – while the rest of the weekend’s DJs hail from major American cities, the Israeli-born Friedmann comes to Atlanta from Berlin. After getting his start as a ballet dancer and model, Friedmann started DJing as a hobby. Eventually, the DJing took over as his full-time gig. Before he arrives in Atlanta, Friedmann took the time to talk to us about his start as a DJ, the connection he sees between sex and the dance floor, and his feelings on Southern boys.

You started out as a professional ballet dancer and model. What led you to focus on DJing? The first time I was introduced to electronic club music was during my time at ballet school in Jerusalem. We used to drive to Tel Aviv on the weekends and go out dancing. The club atmosphere fascinated me but I never thought of becoming a DJ back then. My passion was to become a dancer. Fourteen years ago, after dancing professionally in companies across Europe I was offered a soloist contract with the Berlin Ballet. After moving to Berlin I decided to buy two used turntables and a mixer, practicing at home on my own, determined and disciplined. One thing ballet teaches you is to be extremely disciplined which led me to master my new hobby quickly. After being in the ballet studio

for 8 hours or having performances three times a week, coming home to my records was like an escape into my own world. I spun for friends at private parties or chill outs just for fun. It was only at the end of my ballet career that DJing became serious. One gig led to another and before I knew it I was busy with my new career. Meeting my manager after my first set in NYC was the jumping board to my international career. The musicality I obtained as a dancer was the key to my rapid success as a DJ. Working with music, counting beats over and over all day trains your brain to be very precise. Once a DJ learns the basics of working the equipment, one adopts tricks taught by other DJs or learning some of their technical maneuvers just by listening. But experience is the best teacher of all. Reading the energy of a crowd and understanding how a room full of people breathes is the key to a DJ´s success. Modeling was never my main job though I used to work with agencies in Berlin, London, Paris, Hamburg and Tel Aviv. I was a part of it for a little while but quickly learnt that it was not something I would want to do as a

full time job. Being on the cover of magazines such as Men’s Health and the Australian Blue, done TV commercials and quite a few editorials – fun extra money on the side. The part I loved the most standing in front of the camera was for art books and I was lucky enough to work with great photographers such as Pierre et Gille, Andreas Biesnich, Greg Gorman, David Vance, James Moritz and Kevin McDermott, whom I admire very much. Mario Testino is a close friend of mine. We meet every time he comes to Berlin, I´m sure we will have a fun photo shooting some day soon.

You’ve talked about there being a certain sexuality on the dance floor, and how you try to appeal to it. To you, what do you see as the connection between sexuality and the dance floor?

How do you keep your set fresh? The search for new music consumes most of the time in a DJ’s life. Also mine. Some days I am glued to the chair for so many hours listening to new music, that I forget to eat. Listening to new promos, searching on the DJ music sites such as Beatport, or just spending time with colleague DJs and producers exchanging music. A third of my set is built of new tracks every single party I spin. I don’t like to recycle sets;

Sex is an inseparable part of club life. Many times during the party and surely after the party. I think I can say with great certainty that most of us go out wishing to find a sexual adventure. Maybe even the love of our life. Music can help people feel sexy on the dance floor. I search for sexy

Professionally, what has occupied your schedule in recent months? What projects do you have coming up? I have been traveling like crazy for the last few months but now that the summer just started the real madness begins. Playing gay prides in Madrid, Toronto, Frankfurt, Berlin, Zurich and Prague. [There’s a] circuit festival in Barcelona in August, a far east and a Brazilian tour coming up, and of course the Peach Party in Atlanta. On the production side, my production partner Alex Botar and I just finished two new remixes: “Feel It Inside” by Carlos Gallardo featuring Rebeka Brown, and “Musika” by Ivan Gomez. We are now working on a new remix for Edson Pride.

When you’re not focusing on your career, how do you spend your time? When I am not traveling I try to spend as much time as possible with my close friends in Berlin. Daily work out, good movies and books. No time for more.

Comparing your gigs in Europe and America, what do you find different between the two continents when you DJ? These days, in the Internet era, the differences have shrunk quite a bit. Also the ability to travel more easily brings crowds

from both North America and Europe to fly from one side of the globe to the other. With digital, it is much easier these days to reach individuals or influence their taste. I would say though, that Europe is a touch more electro then North America. North America still embraces the big room tribal Diva sound. The trick is to find the right balance in order to win and fascinate the crowd.

Who are your inspirations? My mother is on the top of the list. Inspiring me with her incredible neverending support and belief in me. I have a line of great artists whom inspire me with their work: Pedro Almodovar, William Forsyth, Henry Purcell, [and] Idan Raichel.

How does it feel to return to Atlanta? It would probably sound a bit too expected of me to answer with “I really love Atlanta,” but I do. The harmony between the promoters of different venues brings a peaceful vibe. I absolutely love the owners and promoters of the clubs I play at. I call them “my Atlanta family.” If they read this interview they surely know I’m talking about them. The Peach Party was also born from a positive will of throwing a great new party event and with the amazing line up I am sure it will be the first one of many more to come. I really hope they will make me their European resident. People in Atlanta are open to new sounds, no matter big events or small. People are friendly generous and not pretentious. DJ Sin Morera splits open the Peach Party

each Party Atlanta is quickly approaching, and with a stellar line-up, it promises to be one of the biggest series of events for dance music enthusiasts in Atlanta this year. Opening up this year’s event is New York’s DJ Sin Morera. Morera, who has worked with DJs such as Junior Vasquez and Shep Pettibone, is returning to Atlanta after over a year, and he’s coming in the midst of a wave of new work. I had the opportunity to talk with Morena about his background as a DJ, his recent activities and more.

How did you get your start as a DJ? I have been on the decks for about 15 years. I started with vinyl and am stuck on digital turntables today. I can’t seem to get along with the computer just yet – I still knock it. I feel anyone can try and be a DJ with the sync button. That’s not a DJ! But I give my thanks to Jimmy Murtagh, a good friend of mine – NYPD shark of a man – who bought me my Techniques 1200, way back when. But I am a

DJ last and a songwriter first, the producer… this just pays my bills, but I love it. It lives inside of me. It’s in my veins.

How do you keep your set fresh? I am constantly working on music. I travel a lot for work around the world, so I get to listen to all types of music, from ambient to world to dance, so I take little elements from here and there and create my own ideas, almost like food when a chef throws everything into a cooking pot. It’s the same thing for me. But you’ve got to be on top of your game because there’s always someone right behind you. Plus, I am pretty competitive. I like a challenge; I love change. Evolving with all.

What have you been up to in recent months? Well, my single “Heartbeat” was released last October, and it kinda has a life of its own at this point. The Cube Guys came on board and did an amazing job on a remix for us. The record is about a toxic relationship and when you hear the original, it spells out some of the things that were done during this lovely time in my life. I laugh now, but then it was a

very painful time. The second single is the B-side of “Heartbeat” so the drama still continues, but this time the record is about being on top and the other party losing it all. I am in studio mode. I’ve always said I am a DJ last. I am a songwriter and I channel what I feel into poetry, then melody comes to life after. As a kid I always wrote. It’s my gift from God. I’m working on my own label. I’m writing a book as well, about my life, and how I grew up. Other songs include a new dance record with Jon Secada and hopefully much more!

You just finished a gig at the Life Ball in Vienna. Can you tell us a little more about that experience? Life Ball is the biggest charity in the world for HIV and AIDS. I am proud to be part of this [charity] that is held in Vienna, Austria in May every year. This year was the 20th anniversary. I met Gary Kessler, the founder of the Life Ball, during a dinner and a private event, and we hit it off. Then he asked me to spin the main stage – the Red Ribbon – which was an honor. In front of 40,000 people…of course, I lost it; it became a tearjerker for me.

So this year on May 19th I did it again. This time I had the opportunity to work alongside Antonio Banderas, Jon Secada, Deborah Cox, and President Bill Clinton to name a few. It’s a massive event. It’s like the Olympics meets the Oscars. A little guy from Jersey doing this? As Mom says, not bad.

How does it feel to return to Atlanta for Peach Party? It feels fucking great! I am excited. Atlanta is a great city and I’m happy to be back after a year.

You’ve worked with Junior Vasquez, one of the biggest names in the industry. What was that like? Junior Vasquez is one of my musical mentors

as a DJ. I always say this, and I’ll say it again – he was my therapist when I couldn’t afford one. I would just sit at the original Sound Factory back in 1989 and dance and listen to how he created magic. To this day I haven’t felt what I felt back then. The man will always be magic to my ears. How he made three or four records work on the turntables was incredible to me. He will always be the bitchy old man, but in my eyes he was the greatest DJ of them all alongside Frankie Knuckles. There was always a balance for me between the two. And of course, there’s Shep Pettibone, the man who wrote and produced “Vogue” for Madonna, or wrote it with her I should say.

What are your plans for the future? I want to buy property in Florida, maybe buy a warehouse and build a gym, build my studio, continue to write songs from the heart, and retire as a DJ. I want to spend more time with my parents and newborn nephews and nieces. I want to continue to

see the globe and just chill. Life is short and today I’m finally at peace with myself, and no longer angry. Though people will still piss me off, there will always be a [part of] me, where if I have to kick ass, I will! I am rough and tough, inside and out, but I am also a softy. Model-slash-Designer Todd Sanfield Bares All

Yes, Todd Sanfield is all of these things. On top of a modeling career that’s led him to land the covers of magazines such as DNA and Têtu, Sanfield is branching out. Among his recent creative outputs, there’s his burgeoning underwear line, the Todd Sanfield Collection, which he designs himself. There’s also his just-released coffee table book, Motel/ Hotel, which promises to show more of Sanfield than he’s previously shown. But Sanfield is more than just a pretty face (and ridiculously hot body). The Michigan native is also a doctoral candidate, currently working on becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy. In the middle of a very busy schedule, Sanfield took the time to talk with David about his line, his new book, modeling, and more.

How did you get your start in modeling? My mom talked me into it when I was younger. We set up a shoot in Detroit and it kept progressing from there.

Are there any particular shoots you’ve done that stand out as favorites? There are a few that stand out, but the Motel/ Hotel shoot is what’s on my mind at this time. It is still very fresh. The reaction to the book has been incredible. This is all I have been thinking about.

Have you ever been approached in public by fans of yours? I have, but not as much as you would think. People seem to be savvier in NYC; this is where I get approached the most.

How do you stay in shape? I try to eat as healthy as possible and work out five to six days a week. The key for me is to eat lots of natural food and get a good sweat while lifting weights. And, cardio for 20 to 30 min a day is a must.

What do you think is your best feature? Probably my butt. I have been told it is the best butt in the game, but you guys can be the judge of that.

Is there a limit to how much skin you’ll show? Buy the book; there are no limits within! All you will see is skin!

What was the inspiration behind Motel/Hotel? The photographer, Kevin McDermott and I talked about doing a shoot. He came out to Detroit while I was spending the summer there last year. We started shooting as soon as he arrived and kept going for two days. I was inspired to take the best pictures possible. When you do something you love you try to do it the best way possible. That is Motel/Hotel. We never planned this, it just happened.

What was your inspiration behind creating The Todd Sanfield Collection? I have always had a creative side; along with my creativity I have been very athletic. I felt underwear went well with my personality and allowed me to express my creativity the best possible way. david atlanta | 35

How involved are you in the creation of items in the line? I am completely involved at this point. In the beginning phase I have to be the only one.

What makes The Todd Sanfield Collection stand out in the underwear market? We are going for the highest quality product with the best fit. This is by the far the most important characteristic a line should have.

What is your favorite piece from the Collection? Well, the range is small currently, having only briefs and boxer briefs. My favorite pieces are the red and pink boxer briefs. Those colors look the best on me; this is why I have them in our collection.

There are two pieces of information about yourself that you never divulge: your age and your sexual orientation. Why do you choose not to divulge either piece of information? It is the simple fact that everybody wants to know. Those are two very basic, irrelevant questions in my life that seem to be a big deal to everyone else. This is why, haha.

In addition to being a model and a designer, you’re studying Pharmacology. How is that going? How do you balance everything? Yes, Doctor of Pharmacy, PharmD. I just finished my second year and have two more to go. I do enjoy this, but not always the amount of time that has to be put into it. The first two years they pile on the material, they saturate you with it to the point that you don’t even know if you are learning anything. The next two years should be a lot better; you actually practice what they have been preaching in a clinical setting. I don’t know how I balance it; there is no other option but to balance it. My Tell-Tale Gay Signs

’m fortunate enough to have great and supportive parents who are cool with the fact that I’m gay, but it doesn’t mean they weren’t at one time holding on to a glimmer of hope I’d turn out straight, as I’m sure a lot of parents of gay children do, not necessarily because they care about the whole ‘gay’ thing, but because they know the traumas that can come along with being gay. However, when I did come out, I wasn’t scared it’d be some big deal, because as I look back, I made it extremely obvious I’m gay from early on. As far as specific incidents that were potentially the giveaway, though, there have been a few, like…

That only lasted for about two days until my mom, who worked in the school I went to elementary school at, told me my teacher found my work incomprehensible because of my jazzy new habit. Bummer.

The time I told them, “Guys, I’m gay” If I had left any sliver of suspicion that I might be heterosexual, that inkling was demolished when I told them face-to-face I was gay, which, of course, they’d known for some time, which could have been the result of the aforementioned events in my coming out timeline… or maybe it was that one time they caught me naked in bed with a local neighbor boy when I was 7. Either way, there’s no question in their mind anymore.

Dallas Brings Back Family Drama

eboots of classic television shows are becoming increasingly common these days. In most cases, these programs are doomed from the start. For every Battlestar Galactica, there are plenty of Charlie’s Angels. Just don’t lump TNT’s Dallas with the reboot pile. Dallas is, as everyone involved with the production insists, a continuation of the groundbreaking primetime soap. Original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray are part of the main cast in this new production, where they join Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo and Brenda Strong. In this version of Dallas, the drama centers around cousins Christopher (Metcalfe) and John Ross Ewing (Henderson), the respective sons of brothers JR (Hagman) and Bobby (Duffy). Each cousin shares many of their characteristics with their respective fathers. John Ross, like JR, is more concerned with money and power; Christopher, meanwhile, shares his father’s concern about the family’s Southfork Ranch and the family name. Along with Dynasty, Dallas was one of the original primetime soaps. The landmark “Who Shot JR?” cliffhanger alone is largely responsible for so many tv seasons ending on dramatic scenes. Fast-forwarding twenty years after the show originally left the airwaves, the new series feels in many ways like a modern spin on the original. While the drama that filled the original is still present, the show takes advantage of its place in the 21st century, as well as its place on a cable network. Unlike the original show’s season orders, which went as high as 31 episodes, Dallas in its 2012 form works with a relatively sparse

ten episodes. The order works to the show’s advantage, allowing the writers to keep track of storylines more efficiently. Dallas’ new cast members more or less grow into their roles quickly. As the two leads of the show, Metcalfe and Henderson have enough command of the screen to get through their scenes, though it’s difficult to watch the two without comparing them to their screen fathers. The strength of the show, though, lies with its ties to the past. The decision to bring back the three most prominent of the original show’s cast was a wise decision. Duffy’s return as Bobby Ewing is probably the most notable, mainly because his character is as integral to the show as the new leads’. While her appearances are less in quantity, Gray also brings plenty to the table with a version of Sue Ellen Ewing that seems more mature than the original program’s version. The show really doesn’t take off, though, without the man who grabbed America’s attention during the 80s. Larry Hagman’s JR Ewing is still an electric presence, absolutely dominating every one of his scenes. At 80, Hagman still possesses more charisma and magnetism than actors a third his age. His presence elevates this Dallas as much as it did during its original run. Whether audiences will respond to Dallas is something that will be hard to judge. Fans of the original will have a reason to turn in with the original cast, and with Strong, Metcalfe and Henderson having worked as series regulars on Desperate Housewives, fans of that program may have an incentive to tune in as well. It’s worth testing, at least. Dallas premieres with back-to-back episodes Wednesday, June 13 at 9 p.m. on TNT.

Raise Your Glasses to a Good Cause Summer-long ‘Sunset Garden’ series brings early evening cocktails & charity to Burkhart’s

he summer party season is about to kick off in style with the June 8 premiere of “Sunset Garden,” an ongoing series of events that continues the Atlanta LGBT community’s tradition of combining fun and fund-raising.

Billed as promising “cocktails, DJs, and a sunset party supporting Atlanta’s LGBT community organizations,” Sunset Garden will take place every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer on the patio at Burkhart’s Pub. With Smirnoff Vodka as sponsor, every party promises to flow with plenty of the kind of delicious cocktails that we love and that inspire great conversation. Perhaps most inspirational of all, though, is the reason for this party season: each event will support a different local organization by recognizing its valuable contributions to the LGBT community. Burkhart’s Pub will donate 50 percent of the sale of each “Smirnoff Sunset Tea” cocktail to the evening’s organization. “The summer ‘Sunset Garden’ series is first and foremost all about having fun in the sun with great DJ’s on Burkhart’s patio while raising awareness and funds for many of our community organizations,” said Don Hunnewell, coordinator of the series. “’Sunset Garden’ is just one more way to give back to our community, while at the same time responding to customers who want to party earlier in the evening.” A rotating slate of local DJ’s will also ensure things are hot and happening. DJ’s Christopher Kind and Bryan Craft will kick things off at this weekend’s series.
