How to go from “Cheap” to “Chic” There is nothing more boring than seeing every gay wearing every hue and shade of every color V-Neck out somewhere. WAKE UP! It is almost 2012, the basic V-neck look went out in 2009! Embrace your creativity and personal style. Sometimes it is so hard to explain why branded clothes are so expensive. A price difference usually reflects the quality of the fabric, the accuracy of the edges and the etiquette. Still, it is said that style is not a question of money and that you cannot buy good taste. Therefore, “expensive” means knowing how to choose and mix clothing items in order to get a fashionable and neat look. Staying fashionable doesn't necessarily mean investing lots of money. mone All you need to know is a few tips and tricks that will make you look stylish with inexpensive clothes. RULE 1: Mix and match. It's already known that all the money in the world couldn't buy sense of style, especially for the men in ATL. Sorry to break it to you, even if you spend lots of money on branded clothes it doesn't mean that you are very well dressed. Put your creativity to the test and mix cheaper pieces with pricier ones. A beautiful and unique style means knowing how to mix and match less simple items with more simple ones. You never want your outfit to scream “price tag” you want it to scream “style”. RULE 2: 2 Buy expensive accessories. Even if you decided to save money, you have to invest much more when it comes to shoes, watches or belts. Everyone should have at least two (brown and black) leather belts and shoes. Nothing is better than be able to show off a really expensive watch while slowly waving at someone across the bar. Incorporating these “expensive” accessories will give the rest of your outfit an upper hand. RULE 3: 3 Quality check. When shopping around look for high-quality items in a bargain. "Quality" can be in certain situations synonym with "expensive". Pay attention to the seam edges and make sure that they are finished, to buttons and colors, and symmetrical patterns. These are details that could make a difference. There have been many situations where I have bought something expensive and it has turned out to be crap and bought something that was inexpensive and it turned out to be good quality, just because something says “True Religion” doesn’t mean its “True Quality”. RULE 4: 4 Black is back. Black has always been the color of elegance and versatility. Besides this, it can be used for so many occasions from casual to formal. You can mix and match a black cheap item in so many ways in order to get a creative and expensive look. When you mix black and white you get that perfect combination that reflects easily a luxurious and chic state. RULE 5: 5 Color matching. Your look should be in perfect balance from head to toe. If you mix all colors possible you'll just obtain a ridiculous and cheap look. We all know ATL is famous for looking tacky and we know from experience that wearing (for example) Red baseball hat, White and red striped shirt, red belt, white skinny jeans, and red and white Nike’s looks too flashy and obscene! Find out what colors flatter you and learn how to match them in a chic and elegant way. 6: Don't spend your money on basic items. There are a few classic pieces that are not worth RULE 6 spending on. Therefore, whenever going shopping, buy cheaper t-shirts, button downs, V-necks or jeans. In actuality, no one really cares where your basics came from. You can wear them with very stylish accessories and you can match them with other pieces in order to create a designer look, such as a blazer, jacket, cardigan, pea coat, vest and sweater.

OPINION
In an opinion column appearing in the Pride issue of David, it was suggested the GLBTQ community be tolerant of those practicing religious intolerance against them. Reading this enraged me, how could the religious bullies possibly get a gay man to write for them?
Media outlets were very quick to pick up Dakota Ary’s story of suspension for voicing anti-gay beliefs in the classroom. It was sensational and ensured viewers and website clicks, but they displayed either gross negligence or outright malice in ignoring the context. While the teacher was asked to remain silent during the investigation of events, Dakota’s family was busy with the American Family Association, working to frame a story where Dakota was the victim of oppressive homosexual intolerance. So what really happened? According to the student, he merely said, “I’m a Christian and I think homosexuality is wrong”. But in what context? According to Marvin Vann of GLBTQ SAVES, a group which combats harassment of students in schools, teacher Kristopher Franks was being taunted by Ary and his friends for an alleged endorsement of homosexuality – specifically, placing a photo of two men kissing on a “word wall” bulletin board at the back of the classroom – and the perceived sexual orientation of the teacher himself. Ary’s condemnation of homosexuality, according to reports, was irrelevant and intentionally provocative, and it wasn’t the first time. He was disrupting class by teacher. attacking the teache Immediately after being suspended by the school, the family was put in contact with Matthew Krause, a first amendment attorney who alleged the school was stepping on the student’s rights. Here’s where it gets messy. The teacher was framed as a religiously intolerant, pro-homosexual bigot attacking an innocent child who merely professed his belief in the word of God. The American Family Association turned Ary into a poster boy for religious oppression. By taking control of the media narrative, Dakota received media support for his bullying. Here’s the deal: my intolerance of your intolerance is not in itself intolerance.
This case isn’t about punishing or disrespecting Ary for his belief. It’s about ensuring a safe, nurturing environment for the students in that classroom. Suspending Dakota Ary for being disruptive and creating a hostile environment not only for Mr. Franks, but also for the other students in the room, is entirely appropriate. A more productive measure might have had Ary write a special essay about the equal rights movement – specifically prohibiting him from calling them gay rights or special rights, of course, but something had to be done. The objective of equality measures isn’t about getting special rights for GLBTQ persons, nor is it about limiting the rights of those practicing faith. It’s disappointing that some members of our community are willing to accept the false “victim” narrative presented those attacking us. We’ve got to be smarter than that.

TIDBITS
Justin Bieber's "swagger coach," who gave the Biebs tips on talking to girls and fashion advice, has purportedly resigned, probably when he realized he was a swagger coach for Justin Bieber. After weeks of hype, Andy Rooney’s last 60 Minutes appearance aired. Great, now I’ll have to revert back to depending upon my 80-year-old grandmother to give rambling complaints with racist undertones about how many Rodriguez’s there are in baseball these days. Johnny Depp has compared photo shoots to “being raped.” Personally, I’d prefer to have my picture taken to promote a film I was paid millions to voluntarily participate in than to be forcibly sexually assaulted, but that’s just me.
Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis Stewart, is getting ready to release a supposed “tell-all” detailing her life with Martha. So what heinous things did Martha do to Alexis as a child? According to Alexis, Martha forced her to perform such horrendous acts as taking her shoes off at the door, wrapping her own Christmas gifts, and -- GASP! -- peed with the door open. Really, Alexis? 22 | davidatlanta

13 stories is another notable attraction in the Atlanta area. It is characterized by the thirteen story haunted house with thirteen different levels. There is a long-standing rumor that if you make it through all thirteen levels of the haunted house you get your money back. This is a wild myth that has been tossed around for years. While you will feel triumphant making it through the haunted house you won’t come out any richer. To help offset the cost thirteen stories has put coupons on it’s website for special dates. Its new outdoor attraction is Big Top Secret 3D. The only information known is that the full experience can’t be begotten without the use of 3D glasses.
The area behind one of Atlanta’s favorite music venue, The Masquerade, transforms into the few year old adult only attraction Chambers of Horror. The Chambers of Horror’s main scare is the psychotic Dr. Splatter. There are two things that set Chambers of Horror apart from other haunted houses. First of all, the actors will insult and harass the patrons, and second of all, the Splatter Bar offers alcoholic drinks to help with the experience. The Splatter Bar plays horror movies along with live independent music.

Walk the Walk, Don’t Just Talk the Talk
Atlanta AIDS Walk 2011
J
uly 28, 1985 the world’s first AIDS Walk was held by AIDS Project Los Angeles. The organizers had no idea what they were setting up, or the impact their actions would eventually have, but they had a goal in mind and hoped to raise $100,000. They knew $100,000 was a large goal, but determined, they set up for a cause, and on July 28th over 4,500 walkers strolled through Paramount Studios bringing in $673,000. Here in Atlanta, AID Atlanta produces the AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5k Run, which dominates the Southeast as the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser. The walk in Atlanta started 21 years ago, and the money raised goes to support essential programs for those living with HIV/AIDS including services to women and children. In the 2010 campaign AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5k Run raised $920,000.
How can you get involved? It’s not too late! The walk takes place in Piedmont Park Sunday October 16th. The fee for walkers is $10; the fee for runners is $25 through October 14, $40 on race day.
Not a walker? Donate! It’s easy to do and every dollar goes towards a much bigger picture. You can donate to a general fund or support a friend or team who is walking in the race. This year’s spoke person for AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5k Run, Bobbie Bentley, was one of the people to benefit from a fundraiser such as this. Ten years ago she was an expecting mother, 20 years old, and HIV+. She needed a place to turn to and AID Atlanta was able to help provide her the resources needed. She talks about her experiences on the AIDS Walk website and ends with a powerful quote: “I ask you – who do you know? Do you know someone living with HIV? Do you know someone who is worrying about the AIDS Drug Assistance Programs? Do you know someone who uses the services of AID Atlanta and the other wonderful AIDS service organizations? Do you know someone who has to make decisions about whether or not to pay bills or pay for meds? If you didn’t know someone – you do now. Me – Bobbie Bentley. I am a mother, a child, a friend, and I am honored to be the spokesperson for AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run 2011.” Well said Bobbie, so lets all do our part to fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic! OPINION
Every decade has its trends. The decade I’m most personally familiar with happens to be the 90s, a decade that introduced us to terms such as “dawg,” “phat,” and “Whoomp! (There It Is).” These phrases were fun and generally socially acceptable at the time, but eventually, like most trends, they lost their fervor and we retired them, along with our Tommy Hilfiger overalls, yo-yos, and Creed albums that we still won’t admit to owning. In the same way that fashion trends fade, so do certain words in our vernaculars. Since we are now in a new decade that sees us leaving the 2000s behind and looking towards the 2010s, I’ve decided that there are a few expressions that have overstayed their welcome, and are now in dire need of retirement. Hate Hater. A “hater” is defined as “a person who expresses intense feelings of hatred or spite, when the reason for this is perceived as unreasonable or spurious.” This means that in order for the term to make sense, there must be unwarranted jealousy involved. However, the term has practically come to be used to describe anyone who voices a less-than-positive opinion. “Lady GaGa is totally overrated.” “HATER!” No, actually, I was just expressing my personal thoughts on the matter. There’s no malice or ill-will there, I just know that if I hear “The Edge of Glory” one more time, I’m going to asphyxiate myself. You’ll primarily hear this word used by gay men and teenage girls. Drama. It should come as no surprise that I’m a reality television junkie. The downside (besides the fact I assume it’s helped speed up the corrosion of my brain) is that I have been totally exhausted by the overuse of the word “drama.” Reality stars constantly pride themselves on the fact that they’ve “risen above the drama,” yet don’t give a second thought to getting into a wig-tugging shouting match in public. If you were truly anti-drama, trust me, you would find away to avoid it altogether. Literally. As the word suggests, “literally” means that you are referring to something that is literal or actual. I’ll take a page from Rachel Zoe: “I literally die for those shoes.” Seeing as how you’re still breathing and functioning normally, no, you did not literally die. Swagger. Contrary to popular belief, this word actually existed before hip hop artists brought it to prominence. Have you ever noticed that nowadays people who still use the word “swagger” are some of the biggest douchebags you’ll ever meet? It’s not a coincidence. Legit. A shortened version of “legitimate,” it means that something is legal and authentic. When you use it to describe a watch (“That watch is legit, bro”), for example, you’re using it incorrectly. Yes, the watch is legit in that it actually exists, but “legit” is not a term of endearment. Epic. “Epic fail, bro!” It was cute for a minute, but now it’s just obnoxious. Oh, and add “bro” to the list of words you should never use.
Hitle This is perhaps my number one pet peeve. “Obama is Comparing anyone to Hitler. worse than Hitler.” Really? Because the last time I checked, President Obama, though highly flawed in his presidency, did not order the genocide of tens of millions of people. How does one’s thought process go from disapproving of Obama’s green jobs initiative to comparing him to one of the most murderous tyrants who ever lived? There are many more expressions to be considered, and while some words will inevitably go on to outlive their decade of origin (“LOL,” for example), it’s safe to assume the aforementioned words will not. So please, for everyone’s sake, invest in a thesaurus, and rid yourself once and for all of passé 2000s slang.

By Will Baker arc Montemerlo - “Coach Marc”, as he prefers to be called - leads a well balanced life. He works out six days a week, shifting strength training and cardio routines each week. One week, he’ll devote four days to strength training; the next week five and the last week, six days. Marc stays away from quick fix foods, opting instead to prepare his own meals of carefully planned carbohydrates (for fuel), protein (for building muscle) and greens (for anti oxidants). He drinks loads of water and takes care of his mental stability through running and mental massage like meditations and mind stimulation exercises. Marc enjoys sex with his partner 3-4 times a week and self stimulation at least once a week (he says masturbation is vital for self connection and exploration). He enriches his soul daily by simply stepping back and being aware. According to Coach Marc, appreciating life’s blessings is key to maintaining balance. We spoke to him to learn more.
M
What is the key to a well balanced life? We have all heard the cliché: “healthy mind and healthy body equals balanced life”. While it is true that a balanced life includes exercise, play and nutrition, it all begins with a well balanced thought process. If we can balance what our thoughts are we can balance our lives.
What does a well balanced life look like? It looks like you have it all together. You exude a certain stillness, calmness, confidence, control and energy.
In today’s busy world, it’s hard for people to find the time to work out. How much time should we devote to a fitness regimen for optimum health? Standard guidelines dictate thirty minutes of moderate exercise each day. However, if you strive to reach optimal health you should devote time during the day to envisioning optimal health and at least an hour a day, five days a week, exercising at a moderate to heavy intensity.
Diet weighs in on health too. Are there easy steps people can do to improve the quality of food they consume? I prefer the term nutrition plan over diet. The first step to follow about food is to think of it as fuel for your body. ‘Feed the machine’, I tell my clients. If you put clean fuel into the tank - proteins, vegetables and carbohydrates, you will perform optimally.
44 | davidatlanta
Many people begin a fitness regimen full force: cutting fats, exercising heavily. Is that achieving balance? Over commitment can lead to sensory overload and a loss of focus. Too much, too soon can kill a workout regime.
How do you know if you’re working too hard and losing balance? You know you’re failing when your will power dwindles and everything becomes overwhelming. Some physical signs to be aware of are lack of sleep, nervousness, irritability and over eating on comforts foods.
What can you do to get back on the right track? Try changing your plan every four weeks. Also, you don’t always need to workout in a gym. Try outdoor fitness. Get out and keep it fresh.
How can healthy living improve productivity at work? Your energy will be higher and your levels of concentration sharper. When your mind is clear, it is easier to make demanding decisions.
People are working longer hours these days. Are there ways to meet wellness goals at your desk? Begin by de-cluttering your work space. Get rid of unnecessary things in sight. Get your filing up to date, clear out mail. Set a plant on your table; something alive, not plastic. Place a bottle of water on your desk and every time you look at it, take a swig to refresh your body and thoughts. Stay away from uppers like coffee. Snack on healthy options like fruit and nuts. Take power breaks away from your desk. Go outside and get fresh air. Leave your cell phone at your desk.
davidatlanta | 45
Does healthy living improve your sex life? When you exude confidence, you will notice a difference in your sexual attraction. Even while having sex, you will feel great about what your body looks like because it feels sexy.
Is sex important to well balanced life? Very. Sex helps to alleviate stress. It has also been proven that during sex, we release endorphins and hormones that elevate our sense of self worth.
How often should healthy people have sex? At least three times a week, excluding self stimulation. Masturbation, by the way, is as important as having sex with a partner.
What are others activities help alleviate stress? So often, we jump into the day and do do do. Take frequent time outs. Do something to stimulate your senses: exercise; move your body; read; challenge your mind with puzzles and quizzes; take a hike; stop and listen to the sounds; soak in the colors around you; smell the scents.
What are some signs that you are not leading a well balanced life? Things feel out of control. You have a sense that you have too much to do with too little time. You are always taking one step forward then five steps back. You’re experiencing constant fatigue. You’re eating food out of boredom and gaining weight.
Are skinny people healthier people? For the most part, yes. Of course, there are exceptions. Some people go too far and do unhealthy things to achieve skinniness.
How do heavy people get heavy? Ok, I’m going for it here: they eat. That’s all, they eat. Unless you have an underlying medical condition that is causing you to be heavy, it is poor nutrition that is causing the heaviness.
Is there any room for cheating? I allow a cheat meal at least once a week to re-set my internal clocks and to keep my sanity. However, when you lead a balanced lifestyle, you will notice that the urge to cheat diminishes.
What are the rewards one can expect from living a well balanced life? The golden question! One can expect to be in contact with themselves. They will feel control over their emotions and thoughts. Workouts will be met with ease and motivation levels will remain high. Living a will bala nced life will give you a new thirst for life. You will want to be more, create more and share more.

ech: It seems like Amazon is always trying to take a bite out of Apple and its latest offering, Kindle Fire, may just be the device to do so. iPod, iPhone, iPad - Apple has dominated the tech scene and every queer seems to rush out to get the latest. Amazon’s planned launch of Kindle Fire, a tablet that rivals the iPad with a nearly 65% less price tag, could be the must-have gadget of the fall. Amazon has slowly been building up a slew of streaming TV shows and movies a la Netflix Qwikster which would be available to Kindle Fire users that subscribe to Amazon Prime ($70 a year . . . that’s less than $6 a month) and that includes free 2 day shipping on most Amazon purchases - that alone will pay for the membership. I’ll wait for reviews but I do wonder if the Kindle Fire is flaming enough to burn into Apple’s bottom line?

all is here and the mountains of North Georgia are preparing for a beautiful transformation. The coming weekends are perfect for a day or overnight trip to get away from the bustling life of the city. Leave the phone at home and head out to Amicalola Falls, the tallest waterfall in the Southeast, for a day hike and picnic. Need a weekend away? Head to one of the many state parks in the North Georgia mountains. My personal pick: Cloudland Canyon State Park. Just a 2.5 hour drive up I-75, this state park has great hiking trails and backcountry sites you can hike into and get away from everyone else.
