WTF!?!?
5 Whores I Idolize by Lucas Witherspoon
1. Jean O’Hara
Jean O’Hara was a ballsy and prominent prostitute in Hawaii before and during World War II. Prostitution had come to be accepted in Hawaii’s Chinatown, but the regulations were strict (prostitutes could not own property, travel outside of their respective brothels after 10:30, or have steady boyfriends, for example). O’Hara, though, all but disregarded those rules, making a large portion of her profits by buying cheap real estate and selling it for at a significant markup, openly defying Hawaiian bylaws. O’Hara instituted a protest in order to defy the instructions that prostitutes were not to travel outside of the brothels, explaining that prostitutes not only helped the morale among servicemen, but also had bought more than
$136,000 in war bonds. Eventually, she got her way. She is also credited with inventing the “bull pen” system, where a single prostitute would work three rooms in rotation: in one room a man would be undressing, in a second room the prostitute would be having sex, and in the third room the man would be dressing. When she published her autobiography in 1944, though, the scandalous details of Hawaii’s prostitution rings came to light, which effectively also brought them to a halt.
2. Tallulah Bankhead
I really can’t sum up Tallulah Bankhead in terms other than “a hot mess.” I mean that in the fondest way possible. Tallulah Bankhead was best known for being a stage and motion picture actress in the early-to-mid-1900s, but her personal life also frequently made headlines. Tallulah came from an affluent Alabama-based political family, which made her trysts and discretions even more intriguing. This is a woman who infamously proclaimed, “Cocaine isn’t habit-forming. I should know -- I’ve been using it for years,” had innumerable sexual encounters with both male and female A-listers, and was investigated by Britain’s MI5 (the British version of America’s CIA) for partaking in “indecent and unnatural” acts with at least half a dozen schoolboys, all while maintaining a very successful professional career. Her actions would be scandalous by today’s standards, so just imagine what kind of stir she caused back then.
3. Marie Antoinette
By now, we all know who Marie Antoinette is. She was the onceQueen of France, wife of Louis XVI of France, who is still a relevant historical icon today. While some of her financial decisions in 16th century cash-strapped France are
8 | davidatlanta
questionable, one has to consider that she was only 18 when she became Queen, and had been bred since childhood to take the position. All of that aside, her fashions, parties, and social life are still legendary. She was allotted a $3.6 million clothing budget each year, which some experts estimate actually ended up ringing it at closer to $10 million, and her masquerade parties were très scandalous celebrations of debauchery, all of which eventually led to her being convicted of treason and beheaded. Nonetheless, I can respect a woman who openly spit in the face of conventionalism. If she wasn’t having booze-laden orgies, she was buying diamond-trimmed gowns more elaborate and expensive than even Oprah could fathom.
portrayed a madam in the film version, and when you have Dolly paying homage to you, you know you’ve done something right.
5. Jenna Jameson
It’s safe to say that most people getting into the porn industry aspire to reach Jenna’s level of success. She turned getting fucked on film into a $20 million porn empire in a few short years. In addition to running her porn empire, Jenna has also made the leap into mainstream entertainment, appearing in Howard Stern’s Private Parts, as well as doing voice work and taking small roles elsewhere on various television shows. This is a woman who went from starring in Please Cum Inside Me to sitting across from Oprah, all the while maintaining an air of confidence and urbanity. She’s shown that it’s okay for a girl to be cool with her sexuality, and make a killing in the process.
4. Miss Jessie Williams
You may not immediately know who Miss Jessie Williams is, but you should certainly have heard of the Chicken Ranch. The Chicken Ranch, as it came to be known, was an illegal but tolerated brothel that has a successful run, in one form or another, for more than 128 years in Texas. At the helm was Miss Jessie Williams, who set strict guidelines for her bevvy of prostitutes, as well as their gentleman callers. The Chicken Ranch got its infamous name during the Great Depression when her clientele started to deteriorate, a problem she solved by accepting chickens as payment (“one chicken for one lay”). She kept the brothel open by cooperating with local law enforcement in informing them of crimes committed by loose-lipped clients, as well as her significant philanthropic efforts within the community. The Chicken Ranch would later be taken over by Edna Milton, and eventually closed after being highlighted during an exposé by a Houston journalist, but her legacy lived on in both a Broadway and film depiction of the ranch, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Men Seeking Men
Leather Man
T
by Tristan Timothy
here’s something about a man in leather that harkens to the deepest desires of a gay man. Leather can butch up even the most flamboyant little man. It speaks a promise of adventure, sexual exploration and a night to remember. In writing this article I found that I know two things about leather culture. The first is that I don’t know that much about leather culture, the second is that I’m turned on by it. Apart from a few drunken nights at The Eagle where I wandered into the leather shop downstairs, I haven’t had much experience with guys who were into it. Despite my best attempts at persuasion, I have never been able to get any of my boyfriends to wear a collar or harness. The origins of gay leather culture go back to the end of WWII becoming more popular in the 1950’s as gay motorcycle clubs grew on both coasts. The new movement challenged the “Gay Fairy” stereotype with a more rugged male. I remember coming across a Tom of Finland book as a kid and being in awe. Images of dominate and masculine gay men decked out in chaps and leather hats. I would come to find out later that not all men were as visually appealing or hung as those
12 | davidatlanta
Gay Dating in the City I had come to gauge my sexuality by, but it still stands as a memorable entry point. The rise of the leather culture gave way to homomasculinity, which has boomed in current times. Suffice to say, Bears are in bitch. Which makes me happy because body waxing can get extensive and expensive. Personally I prefer the natural bush popularized in the 70’s and 80’s. There’s just something about a hairy chested Mary that gets me going. Leather Pride is more than just hot men wearing leather. The culture has provided the gay community with mainstream images that reflect the variety and celebrate the differences that fill our colorful society. It challenged the standards of beauty built within gay stereotypes. We aren’t all perpetual boyish figures, we are men in any shape or form.

WTF!?!? Tidbits Lindsay Lohan is a free woman! She finally finished her probation
stemming from her 2007 (yes, it’s been going on that long) DUI conviction… but is still on “informal probation” because of her alleged necklace theft. Lindsay, please don’t fuck it up. I really hate having to trash your idiocy when I’m totally a queen for you.
A woman is suing McDonald’s, claiming the predatory nature of her
former manager, Keith Handley, led to her become a prostitute. According to the lawsuit, the woman in question, Shelley Lynn, claims she and Handley started dating, and that she was eventually fired by Handley in order for him to maintain control of her. He bought her a house in Vegas, but said she had to start working at one of Nevada’s legal brothels in order to pay him back for it. Eventually, she became one of the Chicken Ranch’s top bookers, servicing up to 12 men in a single night. I know that sounds heavenly to some of you skanks, but her lawsuit alleges that McDonald’s “failed to conduct a due diligence into the moral character of Handley when it sold franchises to him.” I’ve heard girls on Maury talk about having sex for a double cheeseburger, but this takes it to a whole new level.
Ashton Kutcher is set to play Steve Jobs in a biopic. Considering
the news was announced by Variety on April 1, I assumed it must have been an April Fools’ joke, but my wishful thinking was to no avail: we’re actually living in a world where Ashton Kutcher is portraying one of the most brilliant minds of our time.
I kind of lost interest in Community after Joel McHale stopped
taking his shirt off, but apparently there’s a lot of drama going down on the set between Chevy Chase (forever known as Clark Griswold to me) and the show’s creator, Dan Harmon. It all started when Chevy stormed off the set on the last day of filming, which was followed up by Dan encouraging everyone at the wrap party to chant, “Fuck you, Chevy” in the company of Chevy’s wife and daughter. This could all be solved with one simple action: more shirtless Joel McHale.
In a move everyone saw coming, Octomom has found herself
on welfare, something she previously swore she’d never do. The state of California issues her $2,000 per month to feed her family of 15, and she’s also taken all but one of her children out of private school, which will save her about $4,000 per month. A. Why were her kids in private school in the first place? B. $2,000 for 14 chirrens? She better start buying Top Ramen in bulk. by Lucas Witherspoon

Atlanta Leather Pride 2012 rekindles the Ms. Atlanta Eagle contest
I
by Bryson “Pup Nitro” Hankinson
t is time to kickoff the third annual Atlanta Leather Pride the weekend of April 13-15, 2012. Atlanta Leather Pride is a time for us all to get together and celebrate the rich history of Leather, Kink, and Fetish that the Atlanta Community has to offer. We are very proud that this celebration has begun to draw people from around the country to attend as well. One very special thing that sets this year apart from the past is that it also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Atlanta Eagle. The Atlanta Eagle is hosting several events leading up to Atlanta Leather Pride weekend to get the atmosphere started. Alan Penrod, International LeatherSIR 2011, started Atlanta Leather Pride in 2010 and has continued this great tradition with the help of some of the great Leather, Kink, and BDSM clubs based here in the Atlanta area. Alan Penrod was named Mr. Atlanta Eagle in 2009, which kindled the fire to bring back the tradition of holding an annual Mr. Atlanta Eagle contest. This year we will also be bringing back the Ms. Atlanta
16 | davidatlanta
Eagle contest as well for the first time since 2001. We are very excited that this will add one more way for everyone in our community to get involved with the event. We have a panel of local and national judges to select our next Atlanta Eagle titleholders including:
• Pamm, Ms. Atlanta Eagle 2001 • Pup Nitro, Int’l Leatherboy 2011 • Kennedi Kay, Biker Model of the Year 2010 • Wayne Turpin, Mr. Atlanta Eagle 2011 • Don Melville, Atlanta Cub 2011 • Dana Prosser
Also joining us to emcee the contest will be Sean Pendlebury, Southeast Leatherboy 2010, and Colin Steele, award winning adult film star. The winners of the Mr. and Ms. Atlanta Eagle contest will be given the opportunity to represent the Atlanta Eagle and our local community by proceeding on to compete at International Mr. Leather, International Ms. Leather, or the American Brotherhood Weekend if they so choose. All proceeds from Atlanta Leather
Pride 2012 will be donated to the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom Foundation. There will be several opportunities to make a donation during the weekend to support the beneficiary. Friday, April 13 will be the official kickoff of Atlanta Leather Pride 2012. There will be BDSM demos being hosted on the patio of the Atlanta Eagle by members of our local community. The brothers and sisters of Panther Leather Levi club, who are a presenting sponsor of the weekend, will be bartending on the downstairs patio, as well as selling shooters and raffle tickets. This will be a night for everyone to come out and get to know each other in a relaxed setting. Saturday April 14 the Atlanta Eagle will be hosting the annual BBQ and Beer Bust on the patio with a suggested donation of $5. The members of Panther L/L will be hosting a Gear Swap and selling donated Leather and Fetish gear. If you want to get some grooming done then an awesome barber has donated his time to be on hand to

give haircuts for donations. After the BBQ winds down it will be time to get ready for the Mr. and Ms. Atlanta Eagle contest inside starting at 8 PM. We are looking for contestants who upon winning will be able to represent the Atlanta Eagle at the bar and within the greater community. If you are interested in competing for the honor then applications are available online at www.atlantaleatherpride.com and will be accepted until 7:00 PM on April 14. On Sunday April 15, Atlanta Leather Pride will wind down with a brunch at Roxx Tavern starting at 11 AM, and followed by a men’s play party at Flex in Midtown that afternoon. We look forward to everyone joining us to celebrate the amazingly diverse Leather roots here in Atlanta with another year of Atlanta Leather Pride. For additional details about the weekend please visit www.atlantaleatherpride.com.

Atlanta Eagle Turns 25! Robby Kelley reflects on joys & challenges by Elijah Sarkesian Leather and dancing and bears…oh my. Those are just three of the many things patrons of the Atlanta Eagle have seen over the years. The bar, a mainstay in the Atlanta gay community, celebrates its 25th anniversary this month. And they’re celebrating in a major way. Various events are scheduled all throughout April to celebrate not only the 25th anniversary of the bar itself, but the 15th anniversary of ownership under Robby Kelley and Richard Ramey, the annual Leather Pride Weekend, and the WigOut party from MondoHomo. Another cause for celebration this month: the end to the lawsuits filed by the Eagle and several of its patrons in relation to the Atlanta Police Department raid back in 2009. I spoke with co-owner Robby Kelley
20 | davidatlanta
about the dual anniversaries, the bar’s community involvement, and how it feels to finally have the APD raid in the bar’s past.
The Eagle’s been around for 25 years now. How does it feel to hit this milestone? It feels good. I mean, 10 of [those years] were done by Jay Evans, the original owner of the bar, and then the last 15 years, Richard and I have done it. It feels good to make it 25 years.
What led to your decision to buy the bar 15 years ago? 15 years ago, they had threatened to move the Southern Bears club from a Saturday night, where we’d been for eight years, to a weekday night. Allegedly, we were taking too much business from their bartenders. And this was after Jay had passed away, and his manager decided to make that rule. So Richard and I decided
to buy the bar just so the Bears wouldn’t get screwed over. At the time, we were president and vice president of the Bears club, so we did it to help the Bears at the time we bought it.
What’s changed in the 15 years since you originally took over the bar? Nothing much has changed, other than the employees here and there, which is typical for a bar. When the Atlanta Eagle was set up, it was set up as a bar for the community, [including] the clubs and the sports teams, and we’ve maintained that since we’ve taken over.
As far as the groups that have their own nights are concerned, what determines which groups are involved? It’s not complicated. Anybody who asks us if they can do something, if we have the space to fit them in, then we’ll let them do a fundraiser.
Now, the legal case against the Atlanta Police Department recently came to an end. How does it feel to finally have the APD raid behind you? That part’s great. Knowing that it’s all over with, and now everyone can move
forward. Our relationship with the police department is great. I’m sure there are a few police officers out there that still don’t like us, but Richard and I have no hard feelings towards anybody at this point. It’s been long enough to not have to worry about it anymore. The changes that we wanted have been set in place was done for the citizens of Atlanta, not the bar, so everything that was taking place made the city a better place to live, not the bar a better place.
What did you think of the community reaction to the raid? The support that came? Uh, it sucked. (laughs)
Can you go into any more detail about that? Well, we had a lot of support at the very beginning by some wonderful people, and our patrons and employees stood by us for everything that we went through. We had major groups that we had supported for 25 years that never even raised a finger to help us. I would donate money to Lambda Legal before I would to some of the other gay organizations, because Lambda Legal
did come forward to help us.
Aside from the fallout from the APD raid, what are some of the hardest problems you’ve dealt with since taking over the Eagle? When we first purchased the bar, it was fixing to undergo Chapter 7, so we had to build it back up to where it could pay it’s own bills. Now, with the economy the way it is, just like any other bar in town, things could be better. We’re getting there slowly. It’s just part of the economic crunch on any business right now.
On a brighter note, the Eagle has a number of festivities planned for both the 25th anniversary of the bar’s opening and the 15th anniversary of your ownership. Yes. For the 15th anniversary of my and
Richard’s ownership of the bar, we’re doing a rollback party. All of our music and our drink prices are all being rolled back to the same thing that was going on in the bar when we bought it in 1997. It brings drink prices down to…well drinks being $2.25, beers being $2.25. versus the $4 and $4.50 they are now. We won’t make much money off of it, but it’s our way of saying thank you for supporting us for the past 15 years. The 25th anniversary is combined with Leather Pride Weekend, which was started about four or five years ago, and this year’s the first time we’re bringing the Miss Eagle contest back into the fold of things in about 10 years. The women’s leather community is starting to pick back up again, same as the men’s leather community started back
4 years ago when we brought the title back again. Doing both the Mr. and Miss Eagle contest allows us to show the community that we’re a diverse bar and that women are welcome to come into the bar just as much as the guys.
Where do you see the Eagle going in the next few years? Are there any changes you have in store? Just to make it like everybody else, with the economy. I want to stay open. If something happened and we didn’t, then we made it for over 25 years and that’s an accomplishment in itself. But right now, we just plan on being here day to day and just keep pushing, like we always do.
Finally, is there anything you want to say to the community? To the community, for the support from the past 25 years, a big thank you. If it weren’t for our customers, then of course the bar wouldn’t be there. I have great employees that I trust wholeheartedly, which is unusual for anybody who owns a bar, and if it weren’t for them, then the bar wouldn’t be there. So I have a great staff and great, great support, particularly from my part of the community.

No tired ol’ drag talk here!
H
ere I sit on the patio of Amsterdam drinking a fish bowl voodoo something and pondering what to write about in my first column. One thing’s for sure, I won’t be boring you with stories of weight loss. I’m a chubby gal and proud of it! I won’t be boring you with my opinions on politics. Who cares! And I won’t be talking about Ru Paul’s Drag Race! I’ll also try to refrain from using repetitive gay slang like “hey girl hey.” But I WILL be talking about the week-to-week adventures of Atlanta’s best drag queen! By the way, that’s me! I think it’s very important to always support our community. I understand most people can’t go out every night like I can, due to work, family, school, etc. So try this: Every week pick up a David magazine and choose two or three things that week that may sound fun to you and make it a point to invite friends to come along and support. We all have many opportunities every day to give back to our community. You could eat and shop at gay owned and operated establishments or order from gay websites. Oh! And don’t forget, thanks to Ellen – we all have to start shopping at J.C. Penny’s. Damn it, Ellen! I love you and I love the fact that the company is so open-minded, but I hate malls and have never really liked J.C. Penny’s! I did however go to Penny’s a few weeks ago to spend my gay dollars in a store that welcomes our GLBT community. If you are new to Atlanta or the whole gay thing, the easiest and most fun way to support a good cause and have a blast is to go online and find any event that showcases the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence or the Armorettes. The Sisters are a wacky fun-loving
24 | davidatlanta
group that has raised thousands of dollars for HIV and AIDS. They also work to save homeless youth off the streets of the ATL. It may sound heavy, but its fun! These bitches go full force. The “drag nuns,” as some people call them, with their fun and rhetoric are not to be missed. The Armorettes, who’ve raised over $1.9 million for HIV and AIDS, have been around for over 30 years. Short, tall, skinny, fat, hairy, it doesn’t matter. They let it all hang out in the name of charity. In a city like Atlanta it’s easy! So get off your computer and get out of the house. It’s a big gay world out there, so enjoy it, support it, live in it, and love it! Much love, Ruby Redd

Finally, there’s diversity in gay television representation
A
by Elijah Sarkesian
s a self-confessed pop culture fanatic with an eye towards television, I’ve been encouraged in recent years by the growth of gay representation in TV programming. I wish I could say the same for other parts of our community, but the increased presence of gay characters on TV is at least a step forward. I’m even encouraged by the range of gay characters now present on TV. A decade ago, we had Will and Jack on Will & Grace. So…the sexless non-stereotype, or the flaming stereotype. Not that wide a range. Now, just look at the range of characters present. Just in terms of gay teens, at one end of the spectrum is Glee’s Kurt Hummel, while at the other end, we have Ian Gallagher on Shameless. Modern Family, of course, has Mitchell and Cameron as one of the couples on the show. If there’s one gay character that makes me ecstatic, though, it’s Max on Happy Endings. I love that Max is pretty much the opposite of what’s been presented on network television as a gay character. He’s unapologetically lazy, for starters. He’s snarky. And even then, he’s probably one of the best representations of gay men on television today. He’s just…so different from other gay characters on TV. Hell, the number of bear and cub references alone make Happy Endings stand out.
Opinions Matter Even more importantly, the show doesn’t really make a point of treating Max as special among the rest of the cast. His relationships are treated the same way they are for any other character. When the show (spoiler alert!) put Max into a more serious relationship, it wasn’t treated with “Very Special Episode” fanfare. Hell, the kiss that capped the episode wasn’t hyped as a major moment. It just…happened. And, for me at least, it felt like one of the most authentic kisses between two men I’ve seen on TV. This is, by no means, an attempt to slam the way gay characters are treated on other shows these days. I think there’s an absolute need for characters and programs that take the Glee approach. While gay people are increasingly accepted by our larger society, we’re still not at the place of total acceptance. Not yet, at least. I’m glad that Glee has taken its particular approach to LGBT representation. Quite frankly, it’s one of the few things the show still gets right. But as more people come to accept gay people, it’s important to show just how varied we are. Some gay people are more comfortable with their sexual orientation than others. The way we express our gender isn’t tied in with our sexual orientation, either. The way I see it, we need more characters like Max – not exactly like Max, necessarily, but different than what we’re used to seeing. davidatlanta | 31

wo years ago, shockwaves went through the Christian music community when Jennifer Knapp, one of the genre’s most critically lauded singers and songwriters, announced that she’s been in a same-sex relationship for the past eight years. This time coincides with a seven-year sabbatical Knapp took after quickly becoming one of the genre’s most popular artists in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Feeling a lack of enthusiasm with music where she once felt joy, she wrapped up any commitments she had to promote her then-current album, 2001’s The Way I Am, and proceeded to drop out of sight. Since reemerging in 2010, Knapp has released a new album, Letting Go, and taken to the road as a touring artist. She’s currently in the midst of a new tour, Inside Out Faith, where she discusses her first-hand experiences in faith and sexuality. Ahead of an Atlanta area concert this month, Knapp spoke with David Magazine about the balance in being both Christian and a lesbian.
Since coming out in 2010, what has the response been like from fans of yours from your days in the Christian music industry? I always describe the response as overwhelmingly positive and it’s true. The fans are those who are obviously most familiar with my music and my legacy of expressing my experiences in my faith journey. In a way, I credit them for helping me realize the link between the past and the present. They continually inspire me to continue pouring honest experience into my music and have done nothing but respected, nurtured and supported that process. These are folks who have always understood that self-examination and honest 42 | david atlanta
revelation can be a costly process- not everyone is going to like what they find. But in terms of the folks in Christian communities with whom I can still relate, the ones that stick around are those who get that this process is challenging, sacred, and requires sanctuary. Of course, there have been folks who’ve loudly written me off. Some have found a measure of pride and duty to try and “save me” from myself. Another tack is to create a vacuum of silence, to make it so that I never existed. A few major Christian retailers have actually spent significant time and money in removing any trace of me from their shelves and online stores. It’s crazy when folks are more willing to spend more time getting rid of you than investing in your potential. Really, there’s nothing new to report about the tired and short-sighted language of rejection. What’s amazing to me is that I was prepared for worse, what I have actually have received is a much more subtle and ambiguous “disappointment”. Unfortunately, what I am learning is how these seemingly individualized targeted public acts of corporate exclusion leak out onto others who relate to my experience. People aren’t stupid, they realize when they see one person treat another with disdain, the concern becomes how they will be treated when they are the ones who are singled out. That’s not a conversation about sexual orientation; it’s a conversation about loving your neighbor as yourself. I’ve been very fortunate, I’ve got some good neighbors, but not everybody has been a friend.
Along the same lines, what was the reaction of people who worked with you in the Christian music industry? Well, there are people and there’s business.
People act like people. I’ve continued some friendships without a hitch. Some, you can sense a concern of “guilt by association.” And I’ve lost some people who I thought were pretty good friends. What’s important to realize is that professionally I’ve come from an industry designed for Christians by Christians. In a sense, that same industry also attempts to act as religious community. Most people wouldn’t be there without some personal attachment to Christianity. But there is real concern when it comes to business. Say the wrong thing in community and you could have some problems with your business. No one wants to lose their job based on which opinion
they carry in the LGBT/faith conversation, inclusive or otherwise. I say all that to point out, that I suspect there are friends that I have but cannot speak for concern over complications for their profession. On one hand, I wouldn’t want anyone to have to lose their job by being my friend or supporting my art. But it does raise the interesting dilemma when ensconced within the framework of a religious community that aspires to love ones neighbor. Is it then a neighborly business practice to remove professional options for those with which you’d do not agree with theologically? And at which point does the “industry” define what should or should not be happening in “community?”
What do you think are the key differences in your music today, compared with your albums during your time with Gotee? If there’s a major difference it’s that I’m not obligated to mold a concept I’m writing about into a specifically “Christian” language. In some ways, it’s like a comedian who delivers the punch line, but tells you before and after that the whole thing was a joke. Part of the joy must surely include being able to make those connections for oneself? The Christian market place relies on narrators who speak a specific language. Not everyone speaks that language or is comfortable hearing it spoken. I’m still tremendously inspired to give music as a gift, and no doubt, the experiences and passions that I am moved by because of my faith has and will probably be recognizable to those who are familiar to the experience.
Faith has always been an integral part of your music, but on Letting Go, it wasn’t necessarily as explicit as it was on your previous albums. Was that intentional? Absolutely intentional. I worked very deliberately to make a space for others to be able to insert themselves into the music, spiritually if that is what was required, but not religiously. In some ways, looking back, I think there were moments that I choked a flower instead of a weed. I knew that there would be a lot of dialogue about my sexual orientation and what does or doesn’t make a Christian. I guess it was just my way of taking off the halo and seeing if there was still a
saint underneath.
What was your inspiration for creating Inside Out Faith? Two things really. The first is that I have been getting clear and passionate pleas to allow others to speak in support of recognizing LGBT faith inclusion. The fact is, I’m not a musician who works in the church anymore. But there were churches who wanted me to play, recognizing that celebrating the gifts of all kinds of people of faith is an important act of love. I realized that these were folks recognized how damaging a journey being LGBT in the church can be and they wanted to help stop the madness. It took me a while to process, but what I began to realize that there were faith communities out there that knew the value of my story and they were simply asking if I could tell it. The second is reason is what convinced me to tell the story. After my “outing” in the press, the conversations at my shows dramatically shifted. No matter where I played, a theater, a lesbian bar or a fair, after the show I’d come out to hang with the crowd and everybody would line up to tell me their story. Person after person, some gay, many straight, some practicing Christians, people in, people out, clergy and atheists alike... so many had stories to tell about how damaging this one issue had become to their experience of faith (however they did or did not choose to practice it). Many of these are heartbreaking stories that are often difficult but also necessary to hear. They discredit the commonly accepted lie that all Christians, all religiously minded people, all of those whom God loves is for the elect heterosexual. That whether a human being is gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, questioning or straight, ALL are delightful and wonderfully made souls.
communities. Obviously, you feel otherwise. How do you respond to people who think you can’t be both Christian and a lesbian? My first thought is generally, that the determining factors of who I am do not rest in the hands of what others think about me. Someone can say that I do not personify their definition of what they call a Christian, but then I question that it is not ours to judge and determine another’s path to the Divine. The reality of my personal experience is this: in terms of the faith tradition and language with which I am most familiar, Christianity is how I would begin to qualify my faith “orientation.” Despite warnings to the contrary, my loving a woman has done little to dampen my passion and enthusiasm for exploring the mystery of faith and spirituality. I choose my faith, and it has been an equally challenging and rewarding experience. My sexual orientation however, seems to have chosen me. These things are two qualities among many that form my narrative. In my experience, though paradoxical to some, they are not mutually exclusive, but often can be significantly complimentary of each other. They are elements of the whole me.
Do you have any plans on releasing a new album in the near future? I’ve got a plenty of music, now I’m just looking for the time. I’m playing a fair bit of the new stuff now, sort of breaking it in. Hopefully I’ll get into the studio and have something out by early next year.
Have you considered re-recording some of your older songs for a new album, whether combined with new material or just consisting of classic Jennifer Knapp songs?
The battle over theological superiority in doctrine is being waged on the backs of innocent people who have done nothing more than engage in their spiritual communities with ALL of life’s questions, difficulties and, if the church is willing, gifts, joys and enthusiasm as well.
The only way any old stuff will get recorded is if I happen to be playing it for a live recording or something. But if that’s a way of asking if I’ll ever entertain creating a space for overtly themed “sacred” music in the future, then I’d say it’s a possibility. At this point I’m learning to never say never.
There are plenty of people in both the Christian community and LGBT community who feel that people can’t be a member of both

Ready For The Banquet David Magazine’s 2011 Best Gay Artist Topher Payne takes on the legendary Auntie Mame
“
by Frankie Ware
I heard this great interview with Meryl Streep,” says Topher Payne as he sits in front of a makeup mirror. “She said the challenge isn’t making the audience believe you’re the person you’re pretending to be, it’s making the other person in the scene believe it. So I just try to focus on that.” He says this as he begins the two-hour hair, makeup, and duct tape process that will transform him into the titular role in The Process Theatre Company’s Auntie Mame, running through May 5th at OnStage Atlanta. It tells the story of orphaned Patrick Dennis (played by Kate Graham as a child and Bryan Lee as an adult) sent to live with his jazz-age flapper aunt. Her motto, “Life is a banquet, and most poor sons-of-bitches are starving to death,” is put to the test when she loses her fortune in the stock market crash of 1929. Undeterred, the two embark on a series of adventures that run from Broadway to Egypt to a charming Georgia plantation called Peckerwood. Mame Dennis is considered one of the great roles for comediennes in American theatreshe’s been played by Rosalind Russell, Lucille Ball, and Christine Baranski, to name a few- and
now Payne offers a fresh take in Barbara Cole Uterhart’s gender-bending production. The idea for producing Auntie Mame arose from Process Theatre’s wildly popular Designing Women Live series, staged twice a year to standing room-only crowds. Payne’s eerily spot-on Julia Sugarbaker became an audience favorite, and Process Theatre Artistic Director DeWayne Morgan (who plays DWL’s Suzanne, and portrays Vera Charles in Auntie Mame) wanted to find a way to serve those audiences in a full production. “We wouldn’t have attempted it without Topher as Mame,” says Morgan. “There are very few actors I know- or actresses, for that matter- who could pull of this part. It’s different from any Mame I’ve seen, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen Topher do.” The resulting production is the largest The Process Theatre has ever taken on, with a cast of fifteen and endless set and wardrobe changes (there are seven wigs and sixteen costumes just for Topher.) In a time when many other theatre companies are downsizing their efforts, expectations are running high for Topher Payne’s portrayal of the eccentric aunt. “In this weird second career I have as a male actress, I’m always the heavy,” says Payne. “I’m Julia, I’m Joan Crawford, I’m Dorothy Zbornak. Mame is such a departure from that. She’s flirty and carefree, wicked smart but a little ditzy. So I just beat my face and get on the ride, you know? It’s a ton of work, but I’m surrounded by friends and we’re having a blast. I guarantee anybody that shows up for the party will have a great time too.” A fitting sentiment, since that’s probably exactly would Auntie Mame would say. Auntie Mame runs April 14-May 5 at Onstage Atlanta in Suburban Plaza, 2597 North Decatur Road, Atlanta. Tickets: 404.897.1802 or onstageatlanta.tix.com

FairyScopes
ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Rash impulses, touchiness and pushing yourself too hard will only invite trouble. Resisting those demons is a huge challenge right now. Practice meditation, moderate exercise, patience and sympathy. If you can’t be nice, take a long meditative walk.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Your financial intuitions are good, but you need to discuss them with your banker or accountant who might improve on them. Sexual innovation will help your partnership, but again, better to consult rather than to act on impulse. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Charm wins attention and admirers, but real love and commitment take more. Think seriously about where you want to be in 20 years and discuss that with your (prospective) mate. Your boss’s insanity is not your problem; how you respond to it is. CANCER (June 21- July 22): Listen carefully to colleagues for chances to improve working relationships. Your personal relations are a bigger challenge as you feel pulled between love and work. Right now work has to come first. Your partner will understand. LEO (July 23 – August 22): As your friends look to you for leadership it’s too easy to fall into pleasant routines. Take a creative challenge and push for something new and different. If you can wait a week or two to make any financial decisions. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Er… who’s being irritable and hypersensitive? It’s too easy to blame things on your partner. Even a long, strong marriage needs clear boundaries. Clearing the air can be helpful, but solutions will come later. Be patient. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Your flirtatious instincts could upset your sweetie. Take care of what you already have going! A little fresh air and innovation are necessary to keep a relationship alive, but you have to work together on that! SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Losing some friends could be good, but slow down and think hard about who you want in your future. A great new passion is probably just a passing fancy, but why pass it up? Just be careful of expectations and prophylaxis.
Scopes brought to you by Jack Fertig, professional astrologer since 1977. Visit his website at www.starjack.com. 60 | davidatlanta
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Throw yourself into your work. Even if you’re feeling disconnected and just running on momentum you can get a lot done. Seeking attention and promotion will backfire. Just keep your shoulder to the wheel. Rewards will come later. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Rumblings close to home point to domestic trouble on the horizon. Those problems aren’t serious – yet. Take some time off from work; make time your mate. Work together on changes. Flowers or dinner out are nice surprises. Redecorating on your own isn’t. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Those cuties flirting with you are probably partnered. Nothing wrong with flirting as long as you’re careful. Getting too witty will undermine caution. Think ahead! Write down those bons mots that are too incendiary for conversation. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Domestic and professional relationships can bolster each other, but prioritize the professional for now. It’s hard to maintain focus and people are pulling you in different directions. Principles will offer direction. Focus on what is important in your life and who will fall into place.
Bitch! Session
I’m your Bartender, not your babysitter. Keep yourself in check! If you don’t like “the best Atlanta has to offer” then get the fuck out of our town!
Can we start making Whitney Houston jokes yet? How long again do we have to wait? No, your raw cock does nothing for me. Move along now.
Damn! It’s hotter than the Beckham’s sex life out here. That old bachelor degree in psychology (that you never used), plus many years of needed therapy yourself does not make you a qualified to counsel me.
WHEN WILL THE DAMN BARS GO NON SMOKING?!?!?! Dear Daddies: I’m sorry that I’m driving a $50,000 car, even though I’m what you’d consider a “twink”. Muah!

How are you going to be mad at me for not wanting to date you? Your anger surely isn’t going to make me change my mind.
My man doesn’t know anybody in Midtown, and that’s the way I prefer it. Have people forgotten something called Customer Service?? I mean, I don’t have to support your failing establishment if you are going to treat the customers like shit.
Of course now that I am in a relationship, everybody in the world wants a piece of me. Some of you should really stop doing karaoke. My ear drums will thank you.
It was just a blow job, not a marriage proposal. Team Evah Destruction!
You wanna throw shade, but you are such an alcoholic that you show up at the bar everyday with your laptop to do your work. I don’t think you are able to judge anybody. Stop worrying about how I am doing my job until you start doing yours.
After 60 years old, you should probably retire the mesh vest and leather short shorts. Gross.
