Music Review

Bonnie Raitt Slipstream Seven years have passed since Bonnie Raitt released an album, but don’t expect her to catch up to the trends just to give us something to talk about. Slipstream falls back on the veteran’s longstanding hybrid of blues, rock and weepies, out to prove nothing but her place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No song does that better than the sad stunner “Not Cause I Wanted To,” a touching breakup ballad that has Raitt baring her heartache in a devastating gesture of closure – the flip side of her iconic lament “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Raitt’s sound hasn’t progressed much since the release of that masterpiece over 20 years ago, more than halfway into her career – and, because of her timelessness, that’s just fine. “Right Down the Line” offers a delicious reggae change-up on the Gerry Rafferty classic (FYI: The video features gay and lesbian couples in love); “You Can’t Fail Me Now” emphasizes the snuggly warmth of her voice over a gospel-tinged track; and “Ain’t Gonna Let You Go” is a six-minute jam session – a showcase for her bang-up slide guitar skills. Her biting commentary on celebrity, “Marriage Made in Hollywood,” serves both as a pointed reflection on society and the tragic effects of addiction. And she goes out on a high note: “God Only Knows,” a life-affirming prayer sung over a few piano notes. It makes you wish Raitt would come around more often.

Grade: B+

Nicki Minaj Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Nicki Minaj botched her Grammy performance so bad earlier this year, when she weirdly channeled The Exorcist while hawking new single “Roman Holiday,” that even that desperate attempt at shock couldn’t be “saved.” Her sophomore outing is just as confused and ridiculous and stupid. And it’s also completely addictive. Named after Minaj’s alter ego, the rapper launches on that schizo lead single with some snappy flair and fierce flow, swapping personalities like wigs and shoehorning “O Come All Ye Faithful” into the spastic mix. She keeps the crazy coming on “Come on a Cone,” hilariously cutting into a cappella, and then swags out on punchy boaster “HOV Lane.” By the end of the unintentionally comical “Sex in the Lounge,” it seems that Roman’s been exorcised – at least by the sound of the disjointed disc, which completely goes off into clubland. “Starships,” redundantby-way-of-Katy-Perry, breaks into a hooky chorus that embraces the flying-things-areinspiring motif. Yeah, it’s awesomely bad. And so much of the album’s conventional last half – a scattered collection of hit hopefuls that rip off pop-queens du jour – falls into the same black hole. Roman Reloaded is a hot mess of the highest order.

Grade: C+

Trouble

The with Adam

Lambert

Pop star talks ‘novelty’ of his homosexuality, being an unfit role model and his peculiar sex toy by Chris Azzopardi

R

emember the fuss Adam Lambert caused when he tongued his keyboardist in front of the world? Of course you do. The controversial kiss drew both homophobic outbursts and so-what shrugs, and it’s an American Music Awards moment that won’t soon be forgotten. Especially by Lambert himself. “That was an interesting night,” he says, snickering in his charmingly guy-nextdoor way about that seminal smooch. “That AMAs performance was trespassing, in a way.” And, on his latest album, he’s not done crossing the line: Trespassing is the defiant second to the American Idol spawn’s 2009 debut. In this candid interview with Lambert, the pop star opened up about the “redundant” press questions regarding his sexuality, becoming more confident as an out celebrity, and breaking the rules – and going to jail for it.

What does the album title, Trespassing, mean to you? Being who I am in this music environment is trespassing, and that’s why Pharrell (Williams) and I wrote it about that. We had a big conversation about the music industry and the business and being an artist, and then on top of it, being somebody that’s different, being a gay man and being in an industry where it’s not very common, not very present. Kind of feeling like I’m gonna own this, march forward and ignore any kind of sign or person telling me no. I’m gonna do what I wanna do and not feel sorry for myself.

Is anything you do for shock value premeditated? No; I don’t think, “OK, I want to piss people off now” or “I want to shock people.” I kind of, especially after the (AMAs), go with what I want to do musically. That’s been more in the forefront for me in my decisionmaking. I think just kind of being, davidatlanta | 23

and being unapologetic for being, is a risk in and of itself in today’s music industry.

Was the AMAs kiss good for you? I don’t even know. I was in such autopilot. It was one of those weird moments that just kind of happened. Some of the choreography earlier in the number was planned, but that whole moment with him was just, “Oh my god, now we’re kissing!”

You’ve spoken with gay publications and mainstream publications. How is it different talking to each? I try not to make it any different. That’s been one of my big goals, especially with this album. This time around I’m trying to just adopt a post-gay mentality about it, because I’m so proud of who I am and I’m 100 percent positive about it and I celebrate it – but I also think it’s a bit dated to harp on it and to lean on it and to constantly be defined by your sexuality. I think that gay men and women who live their lives as gay men and women understand that and understand that it’s just another part of who they are. Unfortunately, with some mainstream publications, it’s such a novelty for them to be able to talk about it. It’s such a hot-button issue that it becomes the focus of a lot of discussion.

Does that bother you? (Hesitates) It gets a bit redundant. Gets a little old. It’s something I’ve made peace with; I’m trying to just look at it from the other point of view and realize that a lot of the questions are legitimate for someone who doesn’t understand. I think the way to progress and confront ignorance is information. You start talking about things and we get past them. So yeah, it gets a bit redundant, but I feel like at this point, it just comes with the territory that I’m trespassing on.

What challenges have you run into as not just an artist but a gay artist? Well, there’s a huge double standard. Straight artists are constantly toying with images of sexuality and double entendre lyrics; when a gay male artist does, it raises a lot more eyebrows. I’m trying to find the balance, and I think this album has found a balance. It’s not shying away from it at all – my sexuality or who I am or my identity – but it’s also universal. All of these ideas are universal: how I feel, wanting to go get laid, to go have a couple drinks with 24 | davidatlanta

my friends and get a little nasty. Hopefully, for an open-minded individual, no matter what their sexual preference is, they’ll relate. Everybody feels that way. Everybody wants to have a good time, let go and feel free, no matter who you are. What’s cool about the album is that it does specifically address my lifestyle and my experience in nightlife and in relationships, but I think it can reach anybody.

Does being a gay celebrity put pressure on you to spearhead the gay movement? To have to be more political? I don’t feel pressure to be political, but I do feel pressure to raise social awareness and to help be a confident voice for perhaps a young gay teenager who doesn’t really have a lot to look up to. I also find it dangerous, because I don’t always consider myself the best role model in the world. (Laughs)

Why do you say that? Because I’m not here to teach anybody how to be gay and I’m not here to teach anybody how to be the best person. I’m not always the best example. I make mistakes and I do things that are out-there sometimes, but what I hope to inspire is the sense that people can be who they want to be. I always say, “Don’t do what I do; do what you want to do.” I hope that I can inspire people to take control of their own reality.

What can we expect from this album? One of the best parts about the album, as well as it being about an out and proud gay man, is that the first half of the album is very upbeat and electro-funk-dance-pop, and a lot of the things expressed in the first half of that album are rebelliousness and liberation and these kind of anthemic calls to arms. It explores, as gay men and people in general, that when we go out into the world we have to put on our game face. You want to go out and feel fierce, and that fierce thing that we all put on is sometimes like an outfit: We dress it up and we project fierceness, but what lies underneath is sometimes weakness and vulnerability and pain and darkness. The album transitions into that place midway through – it’s very dark and 26 | davidatlanta

quite sad and it’s dealing with heartache and insecurity. It shows a lot about what lies underneath the surface of me, but I think we all can relate to that. We all want to be our fiercest self, and it takes a certain amount of posturing and peacocking to be that. I hope people can find themselves in this music.

Tell me about the song “Outlaws of Love.” That song actually is about everything – it’s about gay marriage, it’s about every challenge that we face as a community, including gay marriage, but it’s more about that emotion of what it feels like when you’re being persecuted or outlawed or shunned because of whom you choose to love.

You’ve been reluctant to talk about politics in the past. But something seems to have changed in you; you’ve been more open to discussing politics and rights. What changed? You know what I think? It’s so fast. All of a sudden everyone’s talking about me and I’m on the cover of a magazine. No matter how welladjusted you are, that’s a weird thing to get used to. Over the past several years, with the first album and the first tour, I’ve got more comfortable in the public eye and I’ve gotten to know my fans more and I’ve sussed out who I want to be as an artist.

But not just as an artist. As a gay man in the public eye too, right? Yeah, as a person. Totally. I’ve kept a lot of my close friends close and my family is still close to me, but of course this type of experience and this flip in your lifestyle causes you to adjust – and that includes as a gay man. I’ve had to adjust and reassess things and evolve a little bit, and that’s because of age, too. When I started I was 27, and I just turned 30 – those three years are a big three years. My perspective is just different – it’s different because of celebrity, but also just because of life.

What’s one piece of advice from American Idol that you’ve held onto? I had a lot of support from my circle of friends who were like, “Just do what you’ve always

done. It doesn’t matter that you’re on TV now; just do what you’ve always known.” The hardest thing about the show is all of a sudden, there’s all this pressure and all these factors that you aren’t used to as a performer, and you have to tune it out and just trust your own gut and try to maintain that sense of integrity. And it’s not easy. Then, transitioning into the music industry is the same challenge. You’re like, “OK, well, I gotta play the game but I also want to do what I want to do, so how do I do that?”

You were in the slammer for a few hours for fighting with your boyfriend, Sauli Koskinen, outside a gay bar in Finland. Did it fulfill any fantasies of yours? (Laughs) Uh, no. Actually, it was horrifying. I was by myself; there wasn’t anybody else in there. It was a private cell. It was a very embarrassing moment and not something that I’m proud of. I have plenty of friends who have had crazy nights and things have happened, and these things do happen to regular people; I am a regular person, but I just happen to have a higher profile. I’ve tried to walk away from the experience and learn a lesson from it and make some adjustments and try not to let it ever happen again. It definitely wasn’t as dramatic as the media made it out to be, but it also wasn’t something to laugh about.

So it’s not true what they say about young guys in jail? Not from my experience!

What’s different about maintaining a relationship in the public eye versus out of it? People wanting to know what’s up and asking questions. But I don’t know. To be honest with you, I only maintained one relationship out of the public eye, so I’m kind of inexperienced either way. (Laughs) I was a bachelor for a long time! I definitely played the field. So I think just being in a relationship that’s become quite domestic actually feels really good; it’s something I hadn’t really experienced much before, and I’m really enjoying it. It actually fits in quite well with my new lifestyle because it’s more private, it’s more at-home, and that’s nice.

Do you want to be married and raise a family? Yeah, someday. I definitely want that for myself at some point. I don’t know when that’s going to be. In fact, I don’t know if it’s anytime soon. I’m really excited that our society is progressing. Everybody has the divine right to marry whoever they fuck they want. The funny thing about being a gay celebrity is all of a sudden it’s like, “Oh, are you going to get married since that’s the new big struggle and that’s the thing everyone is fighting for?” And I’m like, “I can fight for it without getting married myself.” I don’t need to get married for my people. That’s silly.

What does it take to be a Glambert? Reckless abandon. (Laughs) I think that any sort of diehard fandom is a crazy, surreal mentality. That’s part of the fun for the Glamberts; they’ve given themselves permission within that community to be kind of insane. And it’s gorgeous and it’s fun and it’s an escape. It’s not real life – it’s something else. Everybody wants that in some form or another. We all have our different versions of it. For people who are diehard fans, that’s their way, that’s their obsession and that’s their outlet.

Tell me your best crazed-fan story. Well, I’ve gotten a lot of very interesting gifts. I don’t know what they’re called specifically, but I remember opening up this small box and it was this metal sex toy and I think you stick it in the tip of your dick – a urethra rod or something. I don’t know what the fuck it is. (Laughs)

Did you use it? I definitely did not use that. That is not my style. I looked at it and said, “What the hell is that?” And somebody had to answer that for me and then I went, “OK, I’m gonna pass.”

Did you at least re-gift it? As a joke, I did. I think I gave it to Raja (seasonthree winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race). He actually was my makeup artist on my tour that same year. I think I gave it to him. I doubt that he kept it, but I know he laughed quite hard.

Who knows where it is right now. Or what it’s being used for! david atlanta | 27

s ’ d r a n o e y n L a p d r m o C Edua d o in Go

C

By Joseph Brownell

oming out can be difficult. The path to self-discovery and acceptance is often fraught with insecurities, fears and confusion. No doubt a daunting task without having cameras following your every move, so imagine facing the struggle while a reality show is documenting your every move. Eduard Leonard, a member of the South African band Overtone, encounters just that in the recently premiered E! reality series Mrs. Eastwood and Company. On the verge of giving up their dreams, Overtone was discovered by Dina Eastwood, wife of famed actor and director Clint Eastwood. While they featured on the soundtrack for Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, in order to fully achieve their dreams Dina moved the band to California. David Magazine caught up with Leonard to talk about coming out on camera and the future for himself and Overtone. People think success happens overnight but often times it’s the result of years of hard work

28 | davidatlanta

combined with that (some say) lucky break. Can you tell us a little bit about Overtone and what you guys were doing in South Africa prior to being discovered by Dina Eastwood? Overtone was established in 2006. Originally the group was more of a hobby than a career but soon we became popular and had to quit our various day jobs to pursue our passion. Being a six piece band made it financially difficult but we pushed through the hard times -- sometimes only able to afford Ramen. Dina discovered us in 2009 in Cape Town, South Africa around the same time we were contemplating breaking up. Fortunately, the years of hard work paid off when Dina came along. The thing about success is that the hard work almost gets harder when you get a break. To stay relevant and on the top of your game you have to put in a lot of effort. You’ve opened for OneRepublic, toured with Corinne Bailey Rae and contributed songs to Clint Eastwood’s Invictus Soundtrack - what’s next for Overtone? We are currently working on new music, experimenting with sounds, beats, and even dub step

to get a new harmony driven sound. Has all the exposure or success changed the group in any way? We are lucky to have someone like Dina as our manager. Dina is the best example of someone in the public eye who, despite all the fame, stays grounded and true to who she is. However, something that did change after becoming more successful is our mind set. We have come to realize that hard work can pay off. Our drive to succeed is now stronger than ever. Mrs. Eastwood and Company premiered last weekend, what it was like having your every move documented by cameras?

South Africa is not at all like the rest of Africa. The journey it made to free people from oppression has opened its eyes to all oppressed minority groups. After the fall of Apartheid, the South African constitution became the first country in the world to make it illegal to discriminate based on sexuality. In addition to that, South Africa was the fifth country in the world and the first African country to legalize same sex marriage. Not everyone is on the same page though, so it is still frowned upon by many cultures but it has become much more tolerable. I must say I’ve found it much easier to accept myself in California because of the open nature of most people.

Initially it was very intimidating but you soon adapt to having someone in your personal space all the time. I think it helped having a caring production team like that of Bunim-Murray, who we trust, on our side. You will have tune-in to E! at 10pm on Sundays to see it all go down.

Are you seeing anyone special?

Coming out on camera can be difficult, can you share a little bit about your coming out process?

I have always been a philanthropist. In addition to furthering my music career, one day I would like to be a spokesperson for the UN. And who knows? Maybe acting.

My coming out is still a work in progress. Most people in South Africa are yet to find out, although all my friends and some of my family members know. It has been a very hard journey for me as I come from a conservative Afrikaner culture. Dina has a huge part in my coming out. From the day I told her, she has been supporting me and helping me shift my mind to be more comfortable and accepting of my sexuality. Has your coming out changed any relationships (good or bad) within the band, your family or the Eastwood family? Thus far, thankfully, I have experienced positive changes. It has deepened relationships that I never thought would happen. I think after the initial shock people come the realize that you don’t change as a person. Being true to yourself, not living a double life, makes them trust you even more. The Eastwood family has been nothing but supportive every step of the way. Homosexuality is still considered a serious offense in many African nations—is that true in South Africa? Did it make it easier to accept yourself and come to terms with your sexuality in the United States?

No not at the moment. I believe everything happens at the right time so when I’m ready my path will cross with that special person. What’s next for Eduard?

I find that many people in the public eye often strive to do other things than their craft. If you could be doing anything else right now, what would it be? In a parallel universe I would most probably have become a medical doctor, specializing in the ER. Who are your musical influences? I have a diverse playlist on my iPod, from Mozart’s Requiem to Muse, Fun, 30 Seconds to Mars and of course the Beatles If you could write a letter to your 13-year old self what would it say? I would say it’s okay to be you. Don’t try so hard to please people you won’t even know in ten years. Love yourself first so that you will be open to receive and give more love. Don’t be hard on yourself if people don’t accept you for being you. It’s not you. It’s a reflection of their own insecurities and fears. Dream big because they can come true. Know that you are loved. Eat more vegetables! david atlanta | 29

The Big Gay Game Show!

I

’ve been a busy whore in the jungle lately…wait, the Jungle CLUB! Aside for my big role in the RETURN of the new Saturday night once a month show SPARK, and co-hosting with Bubba D’ Licious for their monthly P.A.L.S. BINGO show, I’m also really excited about my participation in the relatively new (they’ve only done 2 so far) unique monthly show called “The Big Gay Game Show”! Last week, I was one of the “celebrity” guests (yeah right, “celebrity”) for The Match Game… wait, time out, let me break it down right quick. The BIG GAY game show is a wacky fun game night that is a throwback to the 60s and 70s Hollywood TV game shows like “Let’s Make a Deal” (and honey you should have seen the ‘deals’ being made in exchange for those ‘packages’ that those Go Go boys from Bj’s were holding. Uh huh, don’t get me lying child), “Family Feud” was hosted by leather man and all-day-eye-candy Chandler Bearden of the M.I.S.T.E.R. program (regular host Steve Harvey couldn’t make it, I guess he wasn’t gay enough…but again, don’t get me lying child). Ok so, another super fun game they played (in which I was a part of) was THE MATCH game. After youtubing a few episodes of these ole’ ass game shows, it really made more sense to me as to why they call the night, the BIG GAY game show because even back then, on national TV, those games were already GAY as hell! I can’t speak for all those TV game shows, but on two of them for sure, the biggest attraction were the only two gayest men in television back then. Like on the “Hollywood Squares” (I hope they bring THAT one back too), the center square was the hilarious and super gay Paul Lynde. And on The Match Game, everyone loved to hear what the outrageously funny Charles Nelson Reilly had to say. But keep in mind, back then ‘gay’ still meant “HAPPY”. And that’s what members from The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (led by Sisters Ursula Polari and Rapture Divine) have brought to the Jungle, a new HAPPY night where you can just be yourself and enjoy the show! Its higher purpose is the raise money for the Lost-n-Found Youth, the only Atlanta-based non-profit whose mission is to take homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth off the streets. The show is every 3rd Wednesday of the month, and all YOU have to do is come watch all the fun, the “celebrity guests”, emcees, eye candy, and just be GAY! UNTIL next week, DON’T read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report!

summer music preview by Elijah Sarkesian

T

Albums

he summer of 2012 sees the release of a wide variety of albums, ranging from highly-anticipated projects to long-inthe-works albums from artists who’ve been around for years. Given the sheer number of albums coming out this year, it’s impossible to tackle them all, but here are some of the pop albums (with some other genres thrown in for good measure) you should know about this summer. Alanis Morissette leaves the major labels and strikes out on her own with her upcoming album, Havoc and Bright Lights (out August 28). It’s her first album since 2008’s vastly underrated Flavors of Entanglement. Fans who want a taste of the new album can download lead single “Guardian” now. Up-and-coming rapper (and member of the bisexual community) Azealia Banks drops her debut EP, 1991, digitally on May 29 and in stores on June 12. Her lyrics are…dirty, but extremely catchy. Fiona Apple is known for a few things when it comes to her albums: they take quite a while to come out, and ridiculously long titles are never out of the question. Both of these things are certainly true when it comes Apple’s fourth album, her first since 2005. The album (deep breath…), The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, comes out June 19. This one’s more for warning than anything else: Justin Bieber’s dropping his highly anticipated Believe album on June 19. If lead single

36 | davidatlanta

“Boyfriend” is any indication, look for Bieber to try and claim the pop space left vacant by the other Justin. It seems crazy to hear, but even in the iTunes generation, labels are still releasing greatest hits albums. Fans of Australia’s gift to dance pop music, though, probably won’t mind when The Best of Kylie Minogue comes out June 19. The project spans Kylie’s 25-year career, from “The Loco-Motion” to “Get Outta My Way.” Fans of self-described “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” Lana Del Rey will get a second dose of music from the artist – kinda – when she re-releases her pre-fame debut, Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant. The album dates back to before Del Rey had decided on the current spelling of her name, and features production from David Kahne (Kelly Clarkson’s My December). For her second album, Electra Heart (out July 17), Marina and The Diamonds (yes, she’s a solo artist with a band’s name) shifts away from the indie pop of her debut and teams up with some of the biggest pop producers on the market. With song titles like “Bubblegum Bitch,” though, it’s clear Marina’s not selling out so much as slightly skewering the genre. Sometimes an album title says it all. Case in point: Maroon 5’s upcoming album, Overexposed (out June 26), which describes the band’s state these days thanks to lead singer Adam Levine’s other job on The Voice (as well as Adam’s frequent state of attire, thankfully). The album is their most pop-friendly to date – think less “Misery” and more “Moves Like Jagger.” You’ve probably heard of Neon Hitch, even if you don’t realize it. After providing guest vocals on Gym Class Heroes’ “Ass Back Home,” she’s planning on releasing her debut album later this summer. The album, Beg, Borrow and Steal,

Sam Sparro finally drops his sophomore album, Return to Paradise, this summer. The album promises to deliver more of Sparro’s sexy voice and dance music.

icon) Kristin Chenoweth comes to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on June 22. Expect a mix of Broadway showtunes, pop standards and songs from her most recent album, the country-tinged Some Lessons Learned.

Scissor Sisters are shaking things up with their upcoming album, Magic Hour, coming out May 29. Collaborators on the album include Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Diplo and Azealia Banks.

Grammy-winner Norah Jones plays at the Fox Theatre on June 23. Jones is currently promoting her latest album, Little Broken Hearts, which features Jones collaborating with producer Danger Mouse.

Atlanta native Usher releases his latest album, Looking 4 Myself, on June 12. After the success of more dance-oriented singles in recent years, this album appears to be heading in that musical direction. Worth downloading: the lead single, “Climax,” which just screams “sex.”

Beware the throngs of teenage girls (and some gay men, I’m sure): British boy band One Direction will be playing at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on June 26. In case you’re confusing them with the other British boy band, The Wanted, this is the group that sings “What Makes You Beautiful,” not the group that’s “Glad You Came.”

features the single “Fuck U Betta,” which may just be the ultimate kiss-off song this summer.

usic fans also get to experience a number of acts coming through Atlanta on tour, providing a wide variety of musical experiences. Here are some of the acts making their way to our fair city that might interest you. Fans of alternative/indie acts who can’t make their way to Bonnaroo will have something to look forward to in June. Radio station 99x is bringing in Foster the People, The Kooks, Kimbra and Bon Iver for Alpharettaroo on June 7 and 8 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. Dutch DJ and producer Afrojack plays at the Tabernacle on June 14. You may not know the name, but you’ve likely heard his work on Pitbull’s #1 single “Give Me Everything.” He’s also dating Paris Hilton. Make of that what you will. Tony and Emmy-winner (and modern-day gay

If you prefer your Brits a bit older, Coldplay comes to Philips Arena July 2. The band is touring in support of their current album, Mylo Xyloto. One of the biggest badasses in country music, Miranda Lambert, plays at Aarons Amphitheatre on July 13. Seriously, if you haven’t listened to her music, check out “Gunpowder and Lead.” Nicki Minaj brings her manic blend of rap and pop to Atlanta as the Pink Friday Tour hits the Fox Theatre on July 22. In case you didn’t catch her earlier this year, Kelly Clarkson is coming back to Atlanta with The Fray. The artists will be playing at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on August 8. Finally, Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias are teaming up for a massive summer tour, and they’re coming to Philips Arena on August 29. Anticipate a lot of dancing. davidatlanta | 37

Gay Days Return to Orlando By Elijah Sarkesian

It’s the time of the year when the House of Mouse gets a little more colorful. Yes, Orlando’s Gay Days are returning this May 29-June 4. Started in 1991 as a day in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World, Gay Days has grown to encompass a week of events that brings in over 150,000 people from around the world. For a time in the mid-90s, the furor from conservative Christians was thick enough to result in protests held outside of the Magic Kingdom. Between the gays and the protestors, it’s clear which side won out. The Disney connection still plays a major part in Gay Days’ plans, with a day set aside for each of the resort’s four parks as a “Gay Day.” These days, though, there’s a lot more going on throughout the week. For starters, if you’re prone to taking a swim, you might want to stock up on your swimwear. There are multiple pool parties happening every day at the Doubletree starting May 30, between noon and 3 AM. Each party features music from a variety of DJs, including DJ RonnyBoy, DJ Chad Guldry, DJ Mike Sniffen, and more. In addition to the main pool parties, separate pool events are being held for bears and for women. Attendees looking for entertainment will also be able to find it at several events going on over the weekend. Friday 42 | davidatlanta

and Saturday afternoons feature the Gay Days Film Festival, with presentations of Private Romeo, Kawa, The Guest House and August. Saturday night, meanwhile, features a Night of Laughter with comedy writer Bruce Vilanch and Julie Goldman of The Big Gay Sketch Show. The weekend also includes a number of concerts. Parliament House is putting on a number of them, including multiple performances by the “Gay Pimp” Jonny McGovern. The headline performers include Sonique on Friday night, Chaka Khan on Saturday night, and Mya on Sunday night. Each performance includes appearances from adult video stars including Austin Wilde and Cody Cummings, along with entertainers like Nina Flowers. Goods and services targeted to the LGBT community also have an outlet at Gay Days through the Gay Days Orlando Expo. The Expo is located in the Doubletree, the week’s host hotel, and features a wide variety of businesses, from national corporations to local vendors. While the events are targeted towards all attendees, there are a number of events designed for subsections of the LGBT community, including Black Pride, bear, and woman-centric events. Gay Days Orlando begins on May 29 and runs through June 4. For a complete list of events, visit www. gaydays.com.

Oh My Gossip!

Drummer Hannah Billie dishes the dirt

H

by Corian Ellisor annah Billie drummer from Gossip discusses new album and what it’s like being queer superstars.

Summer is approaching rapidly and you know what that means? It’s time to party. What summer is complete without a soundtrack? For those of you who have not heard of the band Gossip, you are truly missing out. This band mixes pop, punk, electronic and dance music together in a masterful stew. What comes out is not only good for your ears; it is good for your soul too! I first heard of this band in 2009 with the release of their fourth studio album Music for Men. I spent that entire summer dancing in the car, at home and out at the bars. This time the group is back with vengeance. Working with producer Brian Higgins of Xenomania. You may remember him as one of the writers of that hit by Cher: “Believe.” Gossip is due to release their fifth album A Joyful Noise this week. I sat down with Hannah Billie, the drummer of Gossip to discuss band life what its like being a female drummer in a queer band.

You and your twin brother are musicians. Did you grow up in a musical house hold? Hannah Billie: Yes. My mom was a music teacher and classical piano player. As a kid, I grew up playing piano and then moved on to playing saxophone in the middle school band.

What attracted you to the drums? Hitting stuff sounded good. In Middle school I met this kid Tyler who was this bad ass drummer and had been playing drums for a while. I would stay after school in the band room and play drums with him. He took me under his wing.

Growing up what music influenced you most? When I was a little kid, I listened to oldies from the 60’s and the 70’s. Then when I got a little older, I listened to more grunge. Nirvana was big. I also listened to a lot of Pearl Jam, Alice 44 | david atlanta

and Chains and Mud Honey. It was not about technically being the best, but about a punk energy. After school I would put on shows and just surround myself with likeminded people.

Are there any drummers you look up to? Nirvana was big for me. Dave Grohl, the drummer for Nirvana, was simple and powerful. He was not flashy, just appropriate. That is what I try to do with Gossip. I want to bring out the sing of Beth Ditto, the lead singer of Gossip. I am more groove oriented and do the best thing for the song. I want to support the voice. It is better to leave space then to stick out.

Speaking of Beth Ditto and the band, how did you join the band? I have been with the band for 7 years now. I joined in October 2004. I was friends with the other two members of Gossip, Beth and Nathan Howdeshell in Seattle. My old band opened up for Gossip, so they knew me and my style pretty well. The original drummer was leaving, and so they asked me to fill in. I was working at a sex toyshop and wanted to be doing music full time. It worked out. We all got along really well personality wise.

Gossip rose to fame in the UK with the release of “Standing in the Way of Control”. Can you describe that time period? We recorded “Standing in the Way of Control” in 10 days. We did it in a really punk rock way. It became a top 10 single in the UK. We get more radio play there. Radio is a big part of what makes popular music popular. Its influences reach all over Europe.

Speaking of Europe, you guys have had more success there than in the US. Why is that? I think that in Europe they are slightly more open minded. We are a queer band and have an overweight singer. Over there we play arenas. We play for thousands of people and it feels good. We also appreciate the fans we have here in the US. This is our home.

from left Hannah Billie, Beth Ditto, Brace Paine

Yeah, I appreciate you guys. You rock! You guys are rock stars in my community. Everyone I told that I was interviewing you is totally jealous. We want you to come back and play Atlanta.

Hopefully we will get to play there. It has been way too long since we have been there. With your identity as a band do you think of yourselves as role models? You are kind of on the forefront of queer activism and revolution that has been brewing here in the recent years. We are a queer band. Nathan is not gay but that doesn’t matter. We have a responsibility and a voice. We are very active in the queer community in Portland. We know the bigger we are the more people’s minds we can change. We don’t want to just preach to the choir. We know our fans are like us. We want to help those small town kids. That is what Gossip is all about. Pushing it forward. Self-empowerment and acceptance.

The bigger we get we still want to be weirdos.

When you guys sit down to make a record what are you thinking. We want to make music on our own terms. We want to connect with our audience. We want to make a movement. I was raised on Riot Girl and political conscious.

It’s been three years since your last album. What so you want to say about A Joyful Noise. I am really excited about this new album. I am also very proud. It is a different direction than we have been in previous albums. There are more electronic elements. It was a real journey. We really want to evolve our sound. We played some songs at South by Southwest (A music festival in Austin TX) and the crowd really enjoyed it. I am energized and stoked about touring A Joyful Noise. I can’t wait! davidatlanta | 45

Safe Space

Get what you want & stay safe

T

by Chandler Bearden

aking care of my house and two dogs is what I enjoy most in my life. I’m pretty active in the community with the rugby team and volunteering at MISTER. When it’s time to hookup I really like the kind of guys at the Eagle and Woof’s. Cause, well, they’re guys. But I have more luck online these days. I tend to go both ways too. When I’m on bottom there’s never a chance of any action without protection and I plan to keep it that way. I still have the fear from when I was younger. I had to watch my friends die of this new thing called AIDS. Within a year of finding out, most of them were gone. I saw them get KS, pneumonia and legions. It really freaked me out; so bad in fact I went a few years with having no sex at all. The hardest part about using em all the time is some condoms just don’t fit me right. After trying a few different ones, I’ve found that I like Trojan Ecstasy the best. I don’t even really have problem when I tell a guy to wrap it up; but if he doesn’t want to we find other ways to get where we wanna go. Staying safe doesn’t mean not getting it when I want and have more fun knowing I don’t have to worry about getting infected.

Be a Role Model! Be an Advocate! Share your Voice!

Contact Chandler Bearden at Chandler.Bearden@PositiveImpact-atl.org or call 678-365-4300. MISTER offers free HIV testing and STD screenings Monday through Saturday at our new location in Midtown at 60 Eleventh Street just across from the Federal Building and one block over from the Midtown MARTA station.

FairyScopes

ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Your mouth is determined to get you into trouble. Showing off your brilliant wit will backfire, annoying your partner, upsetting your boss and exposing personal details. Stay home and write, but have your partner look over anything before you let anyone else read it.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Reconciling your ideals with practical needs can be a challenge. The discrepancies there could make anyone pessimistic. The good news is that shows you have a grasp of the larger issues and are taking steps to improve the world. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Being too eager to fix problems can make a cure that’s worse than the disease. Collect facts and figures, listen to everyone involved, but real resolution will be subtler and more empathetic than logical; more in deeds than words. CANCER (June 21- July 22): Applying your personal insights to help others is an awkward fit, but that awareness combined with broader ideas can prove useful. Efforts to solve problems at home just dig you in deeper. For now just listen and cooperate. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Yes, darling, everyone already knows you’re fabulous. Pushing the point will only irritate those around you. Just relax and be you. Your hard work will be noticed, but is that a good thing? Have a friend double-check it first. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Charm and good manners will help you get ahead. Creative playfulness can push you over lines you don’t want to cross. Be sensitive to others, but not presumptuous. Remember that your priorities aren’t necessarily theirs. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Realizing your mistakes is an important part of learning. It may be hard not to feel stupid and resentful. Think of it as intellectual housecleaning that will help you to advance. New approaches to health and exercise are worthwhile, but should be approached thoughtfully. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Sexual tensions and other anxieties need release. Lascivious humor can reveal deeper truths – or it can get you into big trouble. Remembering when and where is just simple common sense. Resist rationalizations and impulses.

Scopes brought to you by Jack Fertig, professional astrologer since 1977. Visit his website at www.starjack.com. 58 | davidatlanta

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Connections that feel karmic can offer insight into old family problems. A little more attention to hygiene and housecleaning can help solve spats with your partner. There are deeper problems, but a little clean up couldn’t hurt. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Screw-ups at work are nearly inevitable. Trying too hard only complicates the project while promoting stress and over-exertion that could cause physical harm. Advice (real or imagined) from a favorite uncle or aunt can help. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): What looks like fun carries hidden risks. Your mouth is especially dangerous now and getting too aggressive will only expose secrets, leaving you vulnerable. In the right time and place, that can be therapeutic. Elsewhere it’s a bloody disaster. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Feeling a bit more than usually disconnected, resist the temptation is to look for comfort in family and home. Better to focus on your career and to build your reputation, not by seeking attention, but by sharpening clarity on your purpose and direction.

Bitch! Session

Excuse me you cracked out piece of trash… can you just say you’re straight so you stop giving us gays a bad name?

The next time you order a drink from me make sure there’s a bill in your hand before you reach down my pants! Sorry, my idea of a vacation does not include being surrounded by 150,000 dramatic gays trying to show off everything from their bodies to their hotels and their bathing suits. Y’all can keep Pensacola, I will keep my sanity and dignity. All the queens that go out to bars and restaurants, we work for tips, not hourly. If you can’t tip 20% keep your broke ass home and quit trying to be somebody you’re not!

It’s that time of the year where the new cycle of gays come out to play. Be ready, the old queens of Atlanta will take you for a spin. What difference does it make if gays can get married if you can’t find a job, have mediocre health care and living in a broke country? Wake up people!!!!

No. I will NOT pee on you!

How shallow you are if you judge someone by looks or what they drive. A man with retirement plans is more attractive then living paycheck to paycheck.

All of a sudden this city seems to have more tops then bottoms! Hallelujah!

New motto for Atlanta gays: ‘Atlanta... Right around the corner from something better.’ Hang out with your own breeder kind! You are a rude, loud, obnoxious drunk person and frankly everyone is tired of you and your tag-along girlfriends!! We are not your posse!

Screw Daddies and Twinks – LESBIANS FOR THE WIN. Life isn’t fair when your cheating ex-boyfriend manages to get even hotter then he was before. What kind of cruel world is this?!

You can tell when it is Pensacola weekend because it becomes 10x’s easier to get a drink at a bar. Gays need to realize that “marriage” truly is a Christian term. Why can’t we just have civil unions and be happy with it? We here at David Magazine have loved the Daddy vs. Twink war the last few weeks, and have decided to call it a tie. Thanks for participating!

NOTE: Opinions expressed are those of the readers and do not reflect the opinions of David magazine. Except for the one exactly above.
