WTF!?!? Tidbits Céline Dion covered Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” during a recent Vegas show. Honestly, if Céline ever covered one of my songs, I’d just go ahead and retire, because it could never be sung better. Lady Gaga is releasing a new perfume called “The Fame”. Per her own description, it smells like “tears of Belladonna, crushed heart of tiger orchidea with a black veil of incense, pulverized apricot, and the combinative essences of saffron and honey drops.” Not mentioned: the reek of pretension. Snooki says she scared to breastfeed because a friend of hers said it’s “kind of like you’re a cow and you’re just milking.” …so many fat cow jokes to be made, so little time. Justin Thoreaux claims he’s “the luckiest guy in the world” for dating Jennifer Aniston. I could totally hook him up with the cat lady down the street from me…only she’s not worth millions, so I don’t know how well they’d get along. I literally had to check my archives to make sure I wasn’t repeating myself, but it’s happened again: Lindsay Lohan was in another automobile accident. After slamming into the back of an 18-wheeler, she claims the brakes on her rented Porsche went out after the truck cut her off and she tried to slam on the brakes. But wait! She also told police that her assistant was driving the car, which her assistant later denied. But there’s more! A water bottle full of booze was also found in the trunk of that car, but fortunately for Lindsay, having an open container in the trunk isn’t a crime in California, so she was cleared of any wrongdoing on that count. But that’s not all! The producers of Liz & Dick, Lindsay’s latest Lifetime biopic in which she portrays Elizabeth Taylor, used the same kind of reason Lindsay herself should have used years ago and they hired a driver for her during for the rest of filming.

According to TMZ, Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa Bryant are
trying to work things out, after she filed for divorce, standing to make around $150 million in total assets, including three mansions. Most people I know have called Vanessa a brilliant golddigger, but I’m going to take Kobe’s side, since I’m sure he realized it’d be cheaper to stay with her while they were both fucking around than it will be to divorce her. – Lucas Witherspoon david atlanta | 11

rowing up in the 80s on California’s Sunset Strip, Adam Shankman’s first concert was at the legendary Roxy Theater in West Hollywood, an appropriate opening score to the soundtrack of his life. “This music was absolutely the wallpaper of my life,” Shankman shared, “I was a little rock baby.” Paired with the inspiration from West Side Story, Cabaret, All That Jazz, Shankman has carved out a world of his own for film goers to enjoy. “In my head it’s fine that I can sing and dance when and wherever I feel like it,” Shankman said. Whether you’re familiar with the director, producer and choreographer extraordinaire, you’re familiar with his world. Shankman has been instrumental to some of the most celebrated Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Glee episodes as well as A Walk to Remember starring Mandy Moore and the 2007 film Hairspray. Shankman is poised to enter that world again with Rock of Ages, a film adaptation of the 2006 Broadway musical by the same name. From early on Shankman knew he wanted to be involved with Rock. “What totally blew my mind after I saw the play was how nuts the audience went for it and how intensely they responded to this kind of souvenir and nostalgic experience and appreciated it completely in this modern world,” Shankman explained.

The resurgence of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” thanks to Glee, shows that the music that serves as the backdrop to Rock has the power to draw in nostalgic older audiences as well as a whole new generation. “If you take away the pageantry of what it looked like back then and you just hear the music now, it ends up being much more substantial music than I think we ever thought it was going to be back then,” Shankman joked. Rock of Ages features sing along favorites from Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, and Twisted Sister.
The film follows Sherrie Christian, a “new-intown” waitress played by Dancing with the Stars turned country singer Julianne Hough, and bar back and aspiring rocker, Drew Boley, played by Pretty Little Liars’ Diego Boneta, as they fall in love in the hair metal era of the 80s. Surprisingly Hough and Boneta were two of only three cast members who actually had to audition for their roles. The star-studded cast that includes the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J Blige, Catherine Zeta Jones, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise as 80’s rock god Stacee Jaxx, were hand-picked for their roles in the film. It’s Tom Cruise who surprises in his turn as Stacee Jaxx. “There was no way of telling how good [Cruise] was going to be, “Shankman shared, “…talk about exceeding expectations. david atlanta | 15

There’s a very big element of you can’t believe what you’re seeing.” 80s rock fans keep your eyes open because if you blink you might miss some of the cameos in Rock. Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach, Boston’s Nuno Benttencourt, REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin, as well as Debbie Gibson and Idol’s Constantine Maroulis are just some of familiar faces who sought Rock out. After rocking out, Shankman is looking forward to a small film to cleanse the filmmaking palate.
This is Where I Leave You, a quiet dramedy about family, is rumored to be starring Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Zac Efron, and Goldie Hawn. A self-proclaimed man of many dreams, Shankman is looking forward to finding a project where he “can blow shit up” but in the meantime, he’s also attached to the action/adventure/fantasy version of The Nutcracker, a Tim Burton-esque reimagining of the holiday classic. Rock of Ages opens Friday, June 15, 2012, nationwide.

Kylie Minogue, Best of After two decades of niche fame, Kylie Minogue’s camp isn’t giving up on demonstrating to the non-gay public the awesomeness of the Aussie, recycling her hits into remixes, live releases and past hit collections. The strategy? Drop a new album, and then get those hits on another album – any album – stat. The Best of Kylie Minogue makes its case: The underrated diva’s catalog is a bank of irresistible dance-music goodies, from her classic ’80s-released fame-maker “The Loco-Motion” to 2002’s crossover hit “Love at First Sight.” Those, of course, show up here (the former as the 7” mix), as do 19 others tracks, and their music videos on an accompanying DVD, from the last 25 years: “I Should Be So Lucky,” a bubblegum standout from her 1988 debut that begs you to get out the boom box, and disco-influenced gems like “Spinning Around” and “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” The latest additions, “All the Lovers” and “Get Outta My Way,” come from Minogue’s reinvigorating Aphrodite, but that hardly warrants another cobbled LP after 2004’s two-disc set, Ultimate Kylie – even if this is her 25th year since making the shift from soap star to dance queen. “Timebomb,” her new single commemorating this milestone, would’ve been a nice incentive on an album that’s a hard-to-justify buy. At least there’s the cool cover art. Kylie buttons from different eras? Oh hell yeah.
— Grade: B-
Naysayers who thought it was risky business having Tom Cruise take on the hair-metal classics of the rock era might be surprised at the gusto he gives in Rock of Ages, the big-screen adaptation of the big-timing Broadway musical. As any good actor will tell you, losing yourself in the role is key – and Cruise, as Stacee Jaxx, does exactly that with his numbers on the jukebox soundtrack. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” is probably too clean-cut for the Gen Xers who can’t see Jerry Maguire blasting testosterone into a Def Leppard sex song, but Cruise is convincing – and completely unrecognizable – as a grunge-rocker that can, yes, sing. Even better, vocally, is the way he reaches for some high notes on “Paradise City” like someone kicked him in the balls. Catherine Zeta-Jones has a darn good time doing her best Pat Benatar on “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” and her energy is infectious. Less appealing is Julianne Hough on … just about all her songs. Hough’s not a bad singer, but she’s no Lea Michele – no matter how hard she tries. So when Mary J. Blige drops in halfway through “Harden My Heart” like a dramadefeating Jesus to a down-and-out Hough – Hail Mary, full of grace! – she’s saving more than she knows: With her soulful “Shadows of the Night” and sassy “Any Way You Want It,” she shows everyone how it’s done.

St. Mark’s Hopes to Open Your Mind with The Normal Heart
O
by Joseph Brownell
utside of its members, there’s a little known history behind St. Mark, one of midtown’s largest churches. It wasn’t always a large church. In fact, in the early 90’s its membership was dwindling. Open minds and open hearts reversed that. “In the early 90s we were a dying church,” explained St. Mark’s Chair of the Publicity and Promotions Committee Phil Hulst, “when 100 or so members here courageously gave out water and a warm welcome to people in the pride parade. It caused a turnaround in our church. We now have over 1,800 members with probably 75-80% gay or lesbian.” That courage came during a frightening time for the LGBTQ community, for in the early to mid- 80s the HIV/AIDS virus began infecting the community in large numbers. Known then only as “the gay cancer,” there was a hysteria of sorts across the nation as people were unprepared and more importantly fearful of the unknown disease. “So many people in our community were horrifically affected in the early 90s,” laments Senior Pastor Dr. Beth LaRocca-Pitts. But the effects of HIV/AIDS hasn’t stop there. “We probably

lost five members last year because their bodies just gave out,” she continued, “but people have started to view the disease as sustainable and chronic. There’s a call for a continued commitment to awareness.” With a spike in HIV infections among the youth in our community, the members of St. Mark once again show their courage with their production of the Tony awardwinning play The Normal Heart. Written by Larry Kramer, co-founder of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the “fictitious” play chronicles the rise of the HIV/AIDS virus during the early 80s in New York City and serves as an outlet for Kramer’s real-life disappointment with the bureaucratic obstacles in response to tackling the disease. Director Jim Baker brings his own experiences to the table. “My life path brought me through this,” Baker explained. “I was an actor in New York and every time you left for a show and came back someone was gone. We lost a whole generation of singers and dancers.” “With infections spiking amongst our youth and African-American women, it’s time to rattle the cages and get this back under control,” Baker continued. Under the direction of Jim Baker, the cast of

Heart has undertaken a monumental task. With a wide range of ages amongst the cast, each member has had to confront their own struggles and experiences with the disease or mine emotion when their exposure has been limited. “I was relentless with this cast in bringing out what I think the character needed,” Baker passionately shared, “and I hope they will each be pleased with the end result.” The cast includes John Harr, as Ned Weeks, Steve Hargrove as his closeted, NY Times writer/ lover, Felix Turner and Diane Haase as Dr. Emma Brookner. “[My role] was a struggle as the mother in me wants to portray the role with compassion but as I’ve learned the only way one could survive through this tragedy was through detachment,” Haase shared. With previous productions including The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music and Anything Goes, The Normal Heart is a departure for the Drama Ministry at St. Mark. Since Heart will be presented unedited only those ages 18 and up
will be admitted- a demographic they are hoping will turn out. “There’s a potential for [young people] to see people living with AIDS and they don’t see it as the killer that we observed early on,” Hulst expounded, “Hopefully, the show will bring a new awareness to the fact that this isn’t something we’ve solved . . . that we’re still in the process of doing that.” In addition to hoping to spark a dialogue about the current state of HIV/AIDS, St. Mark will collect donations after each performance to be distributed among non-profit HIV/AIDS charities in the metro-Atlanta area including Aniz, Inc., AID Atlanta, Jerusalem House, Living Room, Positive Impact, and Project Open Hand. The Normal Heart will run this week Thursday, June 21st and Friday, June 22nd at 8 p.m. as well as Sunday, June 24th at 7:30 p.m. The following week Heart will run Thursday the 28th through Saturday June 30th at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance at Brown Paper Tickets http://tinyurl.com/stmarkthenormalheart. david atlanta | 23
sharon needles shocks atlanta
the controversial queen of shock drag makes her atlanta debut
W
by Elijah Sarkesian
atch out, Atlanta. The reigning queen of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Sharon Needles, is about to make her Atlanta
debut.
Needles, the winner of the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, has quickly become a standout in the drag scene for her macabre style and wicked humor. Even Lady Gaga tweeted about her during the season’s run, wanting to borrow one of Needles’ outfits. More controversially, she’s also becoming known for her use of shocking imagery and comments that have been deemed transphobic and racially insensitive, attributes that Needles thinks are not accurate. In the middle of a whirlwind schedule, Sharon Needles took the time to speak with David about her drag origins, her controversial statements, RuPaul’s Drag Race and her many trips through the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. For someone who’s never seen RuPaul’s Drag Race and will be getting their first exposure to you when you come to Atlanta, what do they need to know about Sharon Needles? Well, first of all, I don’t think there’s one person in Atlanta who hasn’t seen RuPaul’s Drag Race. It is the highest-rated television show of all time. Of course, of course I’m joking, but I guess I would say for the few people in the gay community who are unaware of the phenomenon of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the three [things] that sum up Sharon Needles are: she’s beautiful, she’s spooky, and she’s stupid. But most important, she’s very approachable. She really is turning the drag
world upside down, and taking it from a beauty contest and turning it into real performance art. What are the major differences between Sharon Needles in and out of drag? I’m an intelligent, sensitive punk rock guy who’s in love with education, literature, art, and music, and Sharon Needles…she’s an idiot. She’s Kelly Bundy in black lipstick. She’s irreverent and intentionally acts a fool, but it’s a great juxtaposition between the way she acts and the show that she gives, because the show is very politically motivated. It’s very based on social issues and social anxieties. Her favorite thing is to take very dark issues that people don’t like to talk about, and force them in the spotlight where hopefully we can all create some dialogue, and laugh at ourselves. You’ve come under some fire for your use of controversial imagery. What is the intention of using these symbols in your act? Is it for shock value? A deeper message that you’re trying to portray? I do consider myself a shock artist. The reason I love shock art so much is when I was a kid, I didn’t want to watch Jurassic Park and Titanic; I wanted to watch Pink Flamingos and Dune Generation. I wasn’t listening to Britney Spears as a kid; I was listening to Ministry, Marilyn Manson and the Sex Pistols. I’ve always been a fan of people who liked to make a stink, and I think it’s hard to get a message across when you’re so fluffy about it. I never use shocking imagery or audio for the sake of upsetting people. I have a great compromise, a juxtaposition of shock imagery and performance art, that I think really creates a message. I’m basically saying, “I’m not afraid to talk about everything that we’re all thinking but not saying.” david atlanta | 27
On a similar note, you’ve made some comments recently about the trans community that have sparked some controversy, namely involving calling trans individuals “things.” Would you like to clear that up? That was directed at someone personally who has put my work under attack. I really don’t think we should give her that much attention, since she’s just a Pittsburgh little brat who has done nothing but try to cause me and my family a lot of pain, so I’d prefer not to give her a lot of attention. But you know what? Here in Pittsburgh, me and the Haus of Haunt, we call ourselves “drag things.” I think it’s misogynist for a drag queen to even be called a “her” because drag queens look nothing like women. They’re the exaggeration of American consumerism amongst the female population. So, yeah, I choose to use the word “thing” when I’m not quite sure what to call you. In my personal opinion, I say “Call me he, call me she, fuck – call me Regis Kathie Lee. Just call me.”
a lot of people say all drag queens are into fashion. i.. don't know if that's necessarily true. What actually inspired you to go into drag? I think I’ve always been in drag. I grew up in Iowa in a really small farming community, and [there were] not a lot of imaginative outlets for a kid like me. And though I had two really loving parents, they were both really working class people, so I say this all the time – I was raised by a single parent, and that parent was television! And even though I grew up in this gray, desolate farming community, I had this glowing color box in the living room that just had all these glamorous women like Elvira, Peggy Bundy and Rhonda Shear from USA Up All Night. And I was so inspired by these people, that I was always in my mother’s closet. The Halloween box was never
put away. Since I was bullied a lot in high school, I became a recluse in my own head. I’ve always been creating these fantasy female creatures that I wanted to be. In terms of performing in drag, I had a fake ID by the time I was 15, and was professionally doing drag in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 15. I’m 30 years old and have 15 years under my belt in this business. I think I started drag two and a half hours after coming out of my mom’s cunt. Now you have a very distinctive look. Where do you get your inspiration for your wardrobe and makeup? I’m really into fashion. A lot of people say all drag queens are into fashion. I…don’t know if that’s necessarily true. I’m not the queen with the hot glue gun and a bag full of rhinestones. I don’t want to look like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Patti LaBelle, [or] Cher. My idols are true fashion icons, people like Leigh Bowery and the Factory Girls from Andy Warhol, Amanda Lepore, the Limelighters and the Tunnel kids, club kids from New York in the 80s and 90s. I like to look as extreme as I feel, talk, and act. I think life should be full of extremes, or I would die of boredom. You were just honored by your hometown of Pittsburgh, with the city declaring a Sharon Needles Day. What was that like? It was too early. It was too fucking early! I had a two-day break in my American tour right now, and then these people wanted me in full drag in a courthouse at 10 a.m. But I will tell you this. It felt really good to walk into a courtroom being applauded, and not being escorted out in handcuffs. So it was a real change for me. Pittsburgh has been the home now of two very famous monsters, one being me and one being Rick Santorum. I’m glad there’s a Sharon Needles Day and not a Rick Santorum Day. I’m glad the city’s applauding the monster who stands up against bullying and anti-gay rhetoric, and for gay marriage, as opposed to a multi-millionaire psychopath. But yeah, a win for Sharon Needles is a win for david atlanta | 29
You seemed to be the contestant this year that the majority of Drag Race viewers loved to watch. Was that surprising at all to you? I knew I would be entertaining because I’m different. A lot of drag queens like to assimilate. A lot of drag queens, when they’re growing into their characters, try to follow the rules and try to follow the successful queens amongst them. I was the complete opposite. It’s like…punk rock was challenging society, I felt like I was the punk rock queen of drag. I wanted to challenge what we all thought drag was, or what most Americans were exposed to. I knew I would be funny and kitschy, but did I ever think I would win? Absolutely not. RuPaul’s Drag Race has previously been a show for beauty queens, and I’m glad that this year, it was given to the artist and not the model displaying the art. Now this is your first time performing in Atlanta, right? Yes, but what’s funny is that I’m in the Atlanta airport every single day. And I love it. The Atlanta airport is my Starship Enterprise. I have a secret crush on the bartender in Concourse B. His name is Dan, and if he’s reading this, I’m absolutely smitten with him. Is there anything you’re looking forward to doing while you’re in town? 30 | davidatlanta
Maybe seeing the Suzanne Sugarbaker house. I’m a big fan of Designing Women. And maybe… oh, shit, Ray Charles died. If he was still alive, I’d love to sit on the lawn and hear him play “Georgia” for me. I wouldn’t mind sitting under an umbrella sipping a slow gin fizz watching the yard boys trim my rose bushes. What advice do you have for up-and-coming drag performers? Don’t try to assimilate to your city’s drag scene, because the more you all act, look and perform the same, the more people are going to treat you the same. If you want to be a real star and really hit the mark in this business, you’ve got to stay true to yourself and to your morals and your own personal art. Don’t let anyone tell you a different kind of drag is wrong. And don’t be discouraged at being an up-and-coming drag queen. In fact, I’ve seen every drag performer in America, from a Miss Continental to a girl’s first show, and I will tell you this: beginner drag and bad drag are my favorite drag, because the flaw is what makes it entertaining. The flaw makes it humble, and the flaw is what makes it funny. And for any queen who’s ever booed off stage, honey, that’s just applause from ghosts. Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans? Yeah. I love all my fans, especially the ones who are on the ceiling, because they’re ceiling fans. And I never know what to say to them, except I love anyone that supports Sharon Needles, and I’m so happy people find a little bit of Sharon Needles in themselves. And…Happy Halloween, and Hail Satan. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or you can contact me through any standard Ouija board. For the complete Sharon Needles interview, visit our website at www.davidatlanta.com. Sharon Needles is performing at Jungle on Wednesday, June 27. Doors open at 9 p.m. Attendees must be 21+. the entire city of Pittsburgh. There’s a reason they call Pittsburgh the City of Champions. We have six Super Bowl rings…which is funny, because I have about six cock rings. It was great to be applauded by not just the gay community, the underground scene or the punk rock scene, but elected officials who really understand the importance of having a figure who stands up for kids who are being bullied because it happens in every city, but I would say it probably happens pretty predominantly here in Pittsburgh. We’re a blue-collar city, and blue-collar cities tend to have a more rough-and-tumble attitude towards minorities. So if these kids for one day can feel like their freaky selves, and it’s A-OK, then I’m happy.

You are invited to my ALL STAR birthday party!
O
kay, how about I’m always interviewing other folks and carrying on but I rarely talk about my ‘whereabouts’. So a long time ago, (like 24 years ago), a giant stork dropped my big ass off in the middle of Harlem right quick where I was raised…no seriously, let me just cut to the chase…or the cake. I’m having a huge ALL STAR birthday bash and I want ALL YOU READERS to come help me blow out those candles honey! There are so many bars in this city that I love, but since my theme this year is “back to my roots”, I chose the bar where I first started out in the drag scene 8 years ago, and that’s none other than Blakes on the Park. I will never forget how it all panned out. I was fresh from doing my variety shows where I occasionally played female characters, and it just so happens that I walked into Blakes on a night when one of my good “judy girlfriends” was hosting, Princess Charles. I was happy for that whore and found myself going back every Monday to support her. It was THE place to be on Mondays and always PACKED. Towards the end of her popular show, she ran a contest called “DRAG RACES” (before Ms. RuPaul’s version child). Charles had seen one of my theatre shows and suggested that I enter his contest “you might as well do it girl”. I declined because back then I thought I was too masculine for all that…(shut up). Then one night, Lady Shabazz caught me upstairs sitting in a corner by myself (yeah, I was probably trying to sober up, but don’t get me lying) and she also said “you should do the contest” because she saw me there every week “kee keeing and high kicking” with “the girls”. I told her my concerns and fears, then she looked at me and simply said “don’t do it for them, do it for you”. That doesn’t sound like a heel of beans on paper, but somehow it stuck. Well apparently, that was all I needed to hear because that very next week I was like “hell yeah, let’s do this”. I entered the contest and won (I looked a hot mess, but I won). I guess you can say I caught the ‘drag bug’ because I kept going back and before you knew it I was on the cast. And just like that damn energizer bunny, I kept doing shows, then more shows, and I kept going and going and going ever since. I’m happy to return to Blakes for my birthday celebration on TUESDAY, JUNE 26TH. My special guests are: Nicole Paige Brooks, Princess Charles, Destiny Brooks, Ej Aviance, Shavonna BisforBarbie Brooks, Jasmine Antoinette, sexy Chandler Bearden, Envy Van Michaels and more! Yep, I’m turning 24….(shut up)… UNTIL next week, DON’T read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report!

Brandi Carlile Kids Around Singer talks new album, career epiphany and how ‘even lesbians have chickens and horses’
H
by Chris Azzopardi
ere’s what we know about Brandi Carlile: Her lung power is a bigger threat to humanity than any nuclear war; she’s cool enough to sing with Elton John, who recorded a track with the singer for her last studio album, 2009’s Give Up the Ghost; and she’s totally girl crazy. Carlile’s fourth LP, Bear Creek, named after the secluded studio outside of Seattle she and her twin collaborators recorded in, takes her further into the Americana genre she’s gradually pursued since dropping her debut seven years ago.
Of all your albums, Bear Creek feels most indicative of your musical influences as a child. It doesn’t surprise me. It’s the first record we’ve made outside the boundaries of working at a faraway studio with a major producer. It really did feel like the kind of record you make if you are a kid having a sleepover and the parents aren’t there. We ended up doing things that we didn’t expect.
“Just Kids” sounds like nothing you’ve recorded before. Can you tell me about that song? I call that my 3 o’clock in the morning song, 46 | davidatlanta
because after the session would end and everybody would leave, I would work on this crazy song that I had been tossing around in my head that no one got. I couldn’t get anybody to get it because it was too difficult for me to play.
You always come back to songs about childhood. Why do you feel a connection to that time? I probably always will. I’m super in touch with my inner 8-year-old. I have The Neverending Story tattooed on my shoulders, and that’s just how I live my life – so I’ll probably always write from that vantage point. I hope I don’t ever lose that, because that’s my compass.
Are your twin collaborators, Phil and Tim Hanseroth, big kids too? Oh yeah. We get together and catch frogs and things like that.
Is that what you did at Bear Creek? Quite a bit. We went down to the creek a lot, and the frogs were insane. What you hear at the end of the record was just a really great microphone that we ran out the back window and down to the creek to record the frogs, which is difficult, believe it or not.
Why is Bear Creek significant? That whole area of the northwest is significant to me. It’s a rural northwestern recording studio built from a 100-year-old barn – more similar to my living situation. It’s really near where the twins and I grew up; we all lived in the area, and we’d all get up every morning and carpool or just stay overnight there.
Many of your childhood influences were country artists, and you’ve gradually moved into that genre. Have you considered doing a country record? Yeah, I’ve thought about it a lot. Someday I’d love to do a country duets record. Country is just full of duets and has the best duets there are. I’d love to do an album of duets with current country artists that I love – and then some of the older country artists that are hanging around Nashville that probably wouldn’t give me the time of day. But I would beg them.
Being a lesbian, do you think the country genre would welcome you with open arms? I haven’t made any strategic moves or decisions to move toward a more country-defined flavor in my music or in my lifestyle. I love country music so much because of the way it sounds and because of its traditions, but also because it really does speak to the way I live when I am in my truck and I’m going to get hay for the horse and I’m chasing chickens around the yard. My sexual orientation has very little to do with that, so I expect the country music industry to catch up to that sentiment – that even lesbians have chickens and horses and problems finding work and all the things that they sing about, and they will catch up to that eventually. I am of the strong belief that where you stand out most is exactly where you’re needed. For the full interview with Brandi Carlile, plase visit www. davidatlanta.com. Bear Creek is in stores now. david atlanta | 49

Truvada & the FDA’s approval: What it means for the gays
T
by Cody Reece
ruvada is one of the many antiretrovirals an HIV+ individual may take. As of now, it cost about $14,000 a year to take Truvada as a HIV+ patient. What does Truvada do? In simple terms, Truvada interferes with the HIV’s DNA and stops the spread of the virus. So what’s the deal with Truvada and the FDA? Right now, scientist have found research to support and prove that taking Truvada when you are HIV negative can prevent a person from getting infected with HIV. Have we found the cure? The FDA is in the process of deciding that as we speak, in three months, they will make a decision as to if HIV negative people who have risk factors (sleeping with multiple partners) can take Truvada to prevent possible infection.
Health & Medicine is a fancy term for us medical nerds to say we can treat you for an infection before you get it if you could have been exposed. Now guys, just because us medical nerds are on our way to a “cure” let’s not forget the basicsWrap it before you tap it and know your status.
Will this be covered by insurance? Who knows; that will be the next battle, but from my assumptions if more people are going to start taking Truvada then by supply and demand principles the cost will go down. Insurance companies are big supporters of preventative medicines, as it cost them less in the long run. Truvada may be considered as a prophylactic, which

ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Avoid any games of verbal one-upmanship. You’ll just hurt feelings and have to eat your words. If you’re really so clever, you can figure out what needs work in your relationship. Listening to your partner will help.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Arguments over money arise too easily, especially over silly details like splitting a lunch check. Don’t fuss over pennies. There are more important things than money. Think long and hard about what really matters. You may surprise yourself. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Try a new look, go shopping for clothes. If money is tight, hit the thrift shops. Your imagination and an open mind are better than any amount of money. Good as your own queer eye is, a friend’s encouragement will help. CANCER (June 21- July 22): New insights can be a little scary, but best to look deeper and find out what they’re really about. Irritation with other people, awful and annoying though they are, is more about you than them. LEO (July 23 – August 22): You need some private down time. Plans with friends may need canceling, but that’s OK. Your real friends will understand, and the rest don’t matter. New creative efforts can cure social ennui, but the real answers are deep inside you. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Stay calm, measure your words carefully, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Read the myth of Cassandra. Let people take or leave what you have to tell them. They’ll eventually realize you were right.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Your efforts to smooth out problems at home will only backfire. If you really want things to be nice, be a good listener and get a sense of how you can improve your own self and your actions. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Being responsible for a problem does not mean being at fault and solution is more important than blame. How much responsibility you should take is hard to judge. Take on what you can, but overdoing it is self-sabotage. Gauge your capacities carefully. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Eagerness to explore new sexual techniques can improve your relationship or your chances for getting into one. If your baby balks, let it be “just a suggestion.” Even without pursuing new pleasures the suggestion can open up conversations that build greater intimacy. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Your ability to shut up and listen to job critiques determines your ability to profit from them. There’s always room for improvement. You don’t have to agree with every criticism, but listen and think carefully before responding. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Efforts at having fun are likely to get you into trouble. Unless you’re considering skydiving, that doesn’t have to stop you. How much trouble can you handle? You might find arguments fun, but your opponent is probably not amused. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): “Family fun” doesn’t have to be an oxymoron, although efforts may seem easily muddled and misunderstood. Listening rather than pushing can help. Or leave them alone and try out some new recipes or restaurants with adventurous friends.

‘Blown Away’ by Carrie Underwood
T
by Joseph Brownell
here’s no debating the wave of conservatism that permeates country music. “Redneck” and “white trash” may be common stereotypes for its fans and as an avid country music fan, even I hold these stereotypes. Hearing “faggot” screamed from a moving pickup truck in downtown Blue Ridge, GA feeds those stereotypes as well as a perceived lack of progress within the country music community... that is, until now.
pro-hockey player Mike Fisher, now attend a non-denominational “gay-friendly” church. Underwood’s stance threatens the very fabric of conservatism woven into country music’s wrangler jeans. Is this the Dixie Chicks 2.0? In 2003, Dixie Chicks’ lead singer Natalie Maines’ comments overseas about President George Bush ignited a wave of backlash and they all but disappeared from country radio. Has Underwood, who has always portrayed herself as the conservative, God-fearing Oklahoma girl-next-door, set herself to follow in Maines’ footsteps? I think not. The youth of this country are increasingly in opposition to their parents’ views on this issue regardless of musical taste and judging by the comments on various country music news outlets, if Underwood loses fans, it’ll be the older fans. Also, Underwood is not the first major music star whose genre is stereotyped to be anti-gay. Rapper Jay-Z recently made similar statements without backlash and the African-American community is flush with as much Biblethumping as its country counterpart.
Last month Chely Wright, who came out in 2010, called for a country music artist who was a ‘big deal’ to step up for equal rights for all. Carrie Underwood answered that call. “As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” Underwood said. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.” Underwood, who is well known for publicly declaring her faith, let Jesus take the wheel, stating that it was her Christian beliefs that forced her to declare support for gay marriage. Originally Baptist, Underwood and husband, 60 | davidatlanta
It takes time to see a shift in attitudes and while I think those involved in country music have been slower to react, those changes are definitely happening. LeAnn Rimes has always been vocal in her support for the LGBTQ population. And while rumors swirl about artists’ sexuality and I don’t think we’re ready for a major out country star, the community is being warmed to the idea with CMT casting the first openly gay reality show contestant on Redneck Island. Regardless of how it works out for Carrie Underwood, we’re ‘blown away’ by your support. Here’s to the first step. And Carrie, there’s a spot for you on the David Atlanta Magazine pride float should you choose to take it.

Bitch! Session
Of course us gays dress well. We didn’t spend all that time in the closet doing nothing. Why is it so hard to find a boyfriend when you have a husband?
I’m not sorry you had two drinks thrown in your face. I’m just sorry I wasn’t the one throwing them. I love my haters but I need to get new ones. The ones that I have are getting lazy. To the Lesbians – grab your beer, flannel and testosterone-filled boobs and bring it on. Signed, the Daddies.
Note to Botoxed/face-lifted Atlanta queens over 40. Pensacola is still cool and thank you for dumping your disposable income on us. Love, your bartenders of Pensacola. I can’t get a queen to go on a date in Atlanta. And you scream for marriage rights. You’re all too slutty for marriage.

Thank God you aren’t on Twitter. You could never handle 140 letters.
Re: Bathroom protocol at the bar… Do you piss on the seat/floor at home? No? Then cut it out. Yes? Then don’t come out. No, but, really… The LA Fitness at Ansley Mall needs remodeling very badly. The equipment is broken and the place smells like ass. And not good ass. To the younger guy who’s tired of older guys that reference “in my day” remarks is SPOT ON. Maybe both sides should just listen to one another and learn something regarding both generations. Maybe then everyone could chill and get along. Oh, and by the way, I’m 59 and young.
Life is short. Every day I’m above ground I’m living my glory days. Don’t hate – with any luck we all get older. Keep talking shit, fat ass. You’re only making it easier for me to spill actual facts about you. Hm…hate for the wrong people to hear what I know.
I thought you were attractive until you pulled out a cigarette. NOTE: Opinions expressed are those of the readers and do not reflect the opinions of David magazine.
