#BlackLivesMatter and the Rise of Police Shooting The rise in the cases of police shooting has not only been in the print and electronic media as the internet has also had its feel of the buzz. This has led to increase in online activism with hashtag activists taking to the internet to protest against the rise in the shootings and subsequent increase in the number of black people that have died from the bullet of policemen. There have been different hashtag protests on social media especially Twitter, Facebook, and Nterestin, where people can video group chat LIVE about that hashtag movement with strangers and friends. One of the very famous one of these protests is the one from the Ferguson shooting that transformed streets and other public spaces into dissent venues where people from all races expressed their displeasure at the incident. One of such cases of police shootings that has been heavily criticised by the whole world, especially through the internet and the social media to be precise is the Tamir Rice shooting that led to the death of a teenager in Ohio after the 12 year old boy was shot by a Cleveland police following reports of the boy playing with a gun at a playground. This incident resulted in the hashtag, #TamirRice and just like in the case of Eric Garner, the case of Tamir was ruled a homicide. Eric Garner’s quickly spread across the different platforms on the internet after a video of the incident that led to his death was posted on YouTube. The #BlackLivesMatter, #DontHashtagMe, and #EricGarner hashtags were used to spread the message and put pressure on the appropriate authorities to ensure justice is served, and most importantly that lives are not lost unnecessarily for any reason whatsoever. Cases like these have unfortunately continued to increase in the United States of America and other parts of the world. And lives of young and vibrant persons have been unjustly cut short due to either the negligence of a police officer, or for some other inexplicable reasons. The #blacklivesmatter has subsequently become the driving force or better still, the major online protest channel used to drive home the fact that people should not be killed unjustly regardless of the gender or race. It simply says that every black man has the right to live just like Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and every other black person that have met their untimely death from the guns of “bullet-crazy policemen.
