The Social Media Awareness of Women Rights and Equality online There are have been several cases of human and women rights violations and gender discrimination towards women and even as these phenomenon have existed for centuries, the advancement in technology what has made the world a global village has made the shout for women equality and gender equality louder with different people across the globe adding their voices to the plight. The internet and the use of different social media platforms, have online activism very pronounced with even men joining in the spread of the message. This has led to a number of hashtag activists from the feminine and even the masculine gender coming up with different voices but one word to say no to gender discrimination in all spheres of life, with the #HeforShe being a popular hashtag. One very good example of the use of social media to spread the word about women rights and equality is the gang rape case in Delhi that led to the murder of a 23 year-old physiotherapy student due to a grotesque sexual assault. This led to tens of thousands of people taking on to the streets to make their feelings known to the world especially as it concerns gender-based violence in India and especially violence against women. The success of this protest has been largely credited to the use of Facebook, Twitter and other such social media platforms like Nterestin that allowed the people of India to express their discontent and come out in one voice to support a goal. Violence against women does not only occur in the case of rape as it is not strange to hear of cases of domestic violence with the woman usually being on the receiving side of things and the social media have also helped in getting the word out about this, a good example being the #ringthebell campaign that was really trending on Twitter a couple of years back. On one side, this campaign was aimed at reaching out to men and boys all over the world to make the promise to stop violence against women, and on the other hand, to encourage neighbors and well-wishers of victims of domestic violence to voice out about such situation once it is noticed as procrastination or total neglect might be very dangerous. Managing online social media campaigns is not usually easy but what keeps the organizers going is the success of the campaigns that can be measured by the responsiveness of people around the world and the subsequent effectiveness of the campaign that can be seen in the reduction in the cases of violation of women rights and equality.
