CAREER IN A YEAR — GET TRAINED AND GET TO WORK! I am excited to announce the second year of our new CAREER IN A YEAR initiative at Davidson County Community College (DCCC). Want to get trained and get to work? Not all careers require a two-year or four-year degree. DCCC’s Career in a Year initiative promotes the many career and technical education programs that train students in a year or less. These credentials can prepare students to immediately enter the workforce, or attain additional certifications as the student pursues an associate’s degree.

DCCC OFFERS CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS IN THE FOLLOWING DIFFERENT PROGRAM AREAS: > Building and Construction > Computer Training and Information Technology > Industrial Systems Technology — Machining and computer integrated CNC, maintenance, electromechanical, and welding > Transportation — Automotive, diesel systems, and truck driving > Public Safety, Health and Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism > Early Childhood Education This guide is designed to help you start the right program that fits your career goals and timeline. This publication lists the different areas by length of time to completion as well as explains career options. You will also find information on the registration process for both curriculum as well as continuing education courses.

Thanks in advance for reading more about Career in a Year, and we look forward to serving you soon at DCCC.

Sincerely,

Dr. Darrin Hartness DCCC President

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDEBOOK This Guidebook for Career in a Year has been designed with you in mind. We recognize the world of work has changed significantly over the past few years. New occupations have emerged that simply didn’t exist a few years ago and whether you are just starting out on a career path or you are searching for a new direction to invest your time and talents, we believe we have an option that will meet your needs. To help you get started, we have organized this Guidebook by broad occupational areas. Often, the most difficult part in considering a career choice is simply getting started, so we invite you to take a closer look at the many options available. Finally, we identify the program offerings by whether they are a Continuing Education or Curriculum course offering. Continuing Education courses generally do not carry academic credit; however, some courses may count toward a degree program at Davidson County Community College (DCCC). Curriculum courses provide college credit toward a degree, diploma, or certificate. For example, the Apprentice: Plumbing course is profiled in the Guidebook and is an example of a Continuing Education course and is designated by CE as illustrated below.

Apprentice: Plumbing

CE 135 to 200 hours The course is designed specifically to meet the subject requirements and standards established by the Department of Labor: Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training for plumbers.

Contact: Carolyn Davis, Carolyn_Davis@DavidsonCCC.edu, 336-249-8186 ext. 6331

Heat Pumps CU 13 credit hours; 1 semester This certificate gives students the knowledge of the principles of air source and water source heat pumps. Emphasis is placed on safety, modes of operation, defrost systems, refrigerant charging, and system performance. Contact: Bruce Bowman, Bruce_Bowman@DavidsonCCC.edu, 336-249-8186 ext. 6103
