LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Almost a year ago, we bid farewell to 2020, and to a name that has served our college well since 1965. In becoming Davidson-Davie Community College, we began 2021 with a new name, colors, and marketing, full of enthusiasm for the future — yet paying tribute to a rich history that has encompassed over 500,000 students, 57 commencement ceremonies, four presidents, thousands of employees and volunteer Trustees and Foundation Board members, countless awards and accolades, and decades of commitment to Davidson and Davie counties. DCCC is now Davidson-Davie Community College, and as Board of Trustees Chairman Kevin Firquin shared, we have changed our name to reflect what has always been true. We continue, in 2021, to proudly serve Davie County with the same dedication we have had for decades as we solidified our role there in the 1980s, constructed our first building in the 1990s, and continued to expand our physical presence and our academic programs and services ever since. Our name change truly showcases our “more perfect union.” I continue to be incredibly grateful to serve as president of Davidson-Davie and to witness on a daily basis the dedication, innovation, and caring nature of our students, faculty, and staff. The following pages reflect some of our accomplishments over the last academic year. Most importantly, I hope you will see that Davidson-Davie continues a long and proud tradition of serving our community and helping our students pursue their educational and career goals. Warmest Regards,
Dr. Darrin L. Hartness President, Davidson-Davie Community College
A more PERFECT UNION January 1, 2021 became one of the most significant dates in the 58-year history of the college when it was announced that the Board of Trustees had voted to update the school’s name to Davidson-Davie Community College. “We are changing our name to reflect what has always been true—we are a college that proudly serves Davidson and Davie, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds,” said Board of Trustees Chair Kevin Firquin in a video released to college employees on the evening of December 31 and to the public at midnight. “Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.” From almost the beginning, DCCC had a presence in Davie County, which did not have a separate community college. However, that presence was not formalized until the 1980s when local Davie County leaders advocated for official recognition of DCCC as the provider of community college education for that county. In 1994, the Davie Campus in Mocksville opened. Terry Bralley, now president of the Davie Economic Development Commission, received an honorary degree from the college in 2020 for his role in championing an official presence for DCCC in Davie County. “Today, there’s a new entry in our history book. But know this… as we proudly share our new name, we also recommit ourselves to the same core mission: an excellent education, which leads to promising careers, and supports the success of the communities we serve in Davidson and Davie counties.” DARRIN HARTNESS Davidson-Davie College President since January 2019

“I remember when my dad was working to establish the institution that would become DCCC,” said Elizabeth Gee, a longtime Foundation Board member at the college and daughter of the late Felix Gee. “He would be amazed, and so proud, of where we are today. And I’m delighted to be part of this important moment.”
“I think I’ll be speaking for many in Davie County when I say I’m thrilled about the new name for our community college,” said Terry Renegar upon the announcement of the name change. Renegar is chair of the Davie County Board of Commissioners and president of the college’s foundation. “It’s true, this college has been part of our community for a long time, so the name is just a better way of describing the partnership we have in support of higher education for individuals and for the community as a whole.”
The college’s history dates back to the late 1950s, when communities around the state began exploring the possibilities of developing industrial education centers with funding provided by the North Carolina General Assembly. Local leaders, including Lexington’s Felix Gee and Thomasville’s Doak Finch, rallied their communities to raise the funds to make this undertaking possible.
Performance Measures for Student Success Davidson-Davie Earns Top Ranking As part of the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), Davidson-Davie is evaluated annually on seven performance measures for student success. For 2021, which is based on data reporting in 2019-20, Davidson-Davie was one of only nine institutions to be below average or below the baseline on only one measure or on no measures. The College received performancebased funding for each of the seven measures because all of its scores were above the baseline.

58 Years of Supporting Students Since the college’s beginnings in the early 1960s, followed shortly by the creation of the college’s Foundation in 1968, financial support for students has been a top priority. With over 200 scholarship funds created over the decades by local individuals, families, and businesses, community support for education and for Davidson-Davie’s students has long been evident. Today, in addition to the Davidson-Davie Foundation’s robust scholarship program, there are other ways that students can get financial assistance. For recent graduates of a Davie County high school, the IGNITE DAVIE college promise program is making college low-cost thanks to an incredible community collaboration between individuals, businesses, foundations, and local government. The State of North Carolina also has made funds available through the Longleaf Commitment program, a short-term initiative announced by the governor in May to benefit 2021 high school graduates. Other funds are available for short-term, continuing education programs in areas such as Automotive, Construction, Industrial and Manufacturing, Health Care, EMS, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, Fire and Rescue, and Transportation.

For the Health of Our Community COVID Vaccine Clinics Bring Thousands to Campus Emotions ran high on campus and in the community in January as the first COVID-19 vaccines became available in Davidson and Davie counties, providing individuals with a powerful tool to protect themselves and others from COVID. Through a partnership with the Davidson County Health Department, the Davidson Campus hosted community vaccine clinics for three months, welcoming thousands of people into the Mary E. Rittling Conference Center or into drive-thru lines winding through campus parking lots. Community praise rained down on the health department for the efficiency and dedication of staff members, and the college received an outpouring of appreciation for its role as host. Providing a location for mass vaccinations, however, and promoting awareness and action in the face of a global pandemic, were natural roles for the college. Long considered a central, unifying location in Davidson County, and as one of the county’s largest employers and the only institution of higher education in either Davidson or Davie, the college has been focused on its mission of serving and educating the community for almost 60 years. Part of that mission is the education of the future health care workforce, represented through a range of programs from nurse aide and EMS to pharmacy technology.
Medicine Giveaway Held Again For the second year in a row, Davidson-Davie was selected to host a free over-the-counter medicine giveaway event sponsored by NC MedAssist and Cardinal Innovations Healthcare. At the December drive-thru event, over $100,000 worth of over-thecounter medicine was given away to individuals in the community.
Pharmacy Tech Graduates Certified to Give Immunizations In May, eleven graduates of the pharmacy technology program were among the first community college students in the state to be certified as immunizing technicians. Through a partnership with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), those certified at Davidson-Davie are helping improve the overall health of the population by positioning themselves to increase immunization rates. “One of the challenges in improving the health of our communities is in getting care to those who need it,” said LaQuoia Johnson, a college faculty member in pharmacy technology. “Thanks to this new opportunity on our campus, we already have eleven additional people who will be working in our local pharmacies and certified to give immunizations alongside the pharmacists. And we expect many more.”
Davidson-Davie Leads With Nurse Apprenticeship Program In March, Wake Forest Baptist Health, now part of the Atrium Health system, and Davidson-Davie announced the launch of the first Registered Nurse Apprenticeship program in North Carolina approved by the Department of Labor. The first students are in the process of completing their apprenticeships and have been split between Davie Medical Center and Lexington Medical Center, two community hospitals within the Wake Forest Baptist network. These RNs in training are currently employed by Wake Forest Baptist Health as LPNs, and they will transition to RN status in July 2022. The true benefit of the program is to expedite the previous timing for going from LPN to RN status. Currently that takes three years, and this apprenticeship, with the region’s only academic health system, will instead allow these students to graduate with the RN degree in 24 months. This is possible, without affecting the quality of training, because these nurses are able to receive their training in a Hospital/Acute Care setting, which is unique in that most LPNs have to receive this training in slower-paced medical environments, such as a clinic or nursing home setting. “We are always looking for ways to improve and increase the recruitment and retention of registered nurses to help us care for our patients,” said Kim Stanbery, chief nursing officer at Davie Medical Center. “While this is something we have wanted to do for quite some time, the pandemic has only increased the need for nurses. Our hope is that these new RNs will be with Wake Forest Baptist Health for years to come.”

Grant Updates Upward Bound a federal trio grant program The Upward Bound Program, in its fifth year at Davidson-Davie, helps prepare students in grades 9-12 for higher education after high school, with a particular focus on low-income and first-generation college students. The program is free and provides services such as tutoring, mentoring, test prep, college campus visits, cultural trips, career exploration, financial literacy, and assistance with college and financial aid applications. This particular grant serves students at Central Davidson and West Davidson high schools. During COVID, the Upward Bound program has been providing virtual programming to its participants. Students have engaged in virtual theatre productions, painting classes, robotics coding courses, college visits, entrepreneurship endeavors, ACT Boot Camps, tutoring, motivational speaker engagements, and more. Even as students have moved back to in-person learning and programs, Upward Bound continues to offer virtual options to provide scheduling flexibility and more learning opportunities for its students.
Student Support Services a federal trio grant program Davidson-Davie has been awarded five Student Support Services grants for five years each, the first starting in 2001 and the most recent awarded in 2021. The program currently serves 160 students enrolled at the Davidson or Davie campus. TRIO Student Support Services is designed to assist students in reaching their academic goals of graduating with an associate degree and transferring to a four-year college or university. The program offers comprehensive individual support, assisting students with enhancing their academic skills in a welcoming atmosphere where they can thrive intellectually, personally, and professionally. Grant staff are committed to employing a holistic approach to empower students to be resilient, demonstrate selfefficacy, and strengthen self and peer advocacy. Specific services include academic advising, success coaching, transfer advising and college visits, tutoring, enrichment activities, leadership conferences, study abroad opportunities, and assistance with financial aid and scholarship applications.

Talent Search a federal trio grant program Davidson-Davie has been awarded two five-year Talent Search grants, the first starting in 2016 and the second in 2021. Talent Search serves 500 students in grades 6-12 of Lexington and Thomasville city schools, providing free academic, career, and financial counseling and encouraging students to graduate from high school and complete post-secondary education. Program advisors have office space in both middle and high schools to provide interactive and engaging relationships and programming. Ninety-nine percent of students continue to the next grade in high school, while 80% enroll in college. Talent Search offers both virtual and in-person programming. Some signature programs include Acing the Undergrad, STEMTACULAR (e.g., music production, raspberry pi, robotics, culinary arts), entrepreneurship, youth investment bootcamps, ACT and SAT Prep, money management, career development, college visits/tours, Saturday academies, online tutoring, and more. Parent participation is highly encouraged and valued.
Technology & Teaching developing a hyflex environment
New Active Learning Room Possible Through Title III Funds Davidson-Davie was proud to receive a five-year, $2.25 million Title III grant in 2019 to expand the college’s capacity to serve low-income students while strengthening academic quality and addressing related needs. Among the grant initiatives, in Summer 2021, sixteen faculty members across multiple disciplines engaged in the second annual Summer Institute through the college’s Center for Teaching & Learning. Additionally, in Summer 2021, Davidson-Davie created a new high-tech active learning classroom in the Gee Building on the Davidson Campus. Faculty and students use Mersive Solstice, an active learning software, to share content around the room to student pods and work collaboratively with each other. The room is organized in small groups to further encourage collaboration and includes flexible furniture to give faculty the option to create different classroom designs. Faculty members using the new classroom this fall include math and biology instructors from a seven-member Title III cohort who participated in active learning professional development during the summer.

In Summer 2020, the college’s information technology department was able to quickly outfit all classrooms and labs with the cameras and web conferencing technology to allow for a “hyflex” environment -- meaning a hybrid, flexible teaching model that embraces both in-person and online learning. The Teaching, Learning and Global Engagement team was able to provide professional development for faculty the first week they returned in August to help them learn the new setups in classrooms. The Center also brought to campus the founder of the hyflex model, Brian Beatty, to speak with faculty regarding best practices. The technology, support, and engagement of faculty members ensured that the college was able to pivot as needed during the height of the pandemic.
Celebrating Our Return to Campus While Davidson-Davie continued to operate throughout the pandemic, with most classes moved online in the early months of COVID and then many with a virtual option throughout the 2020-21 academic year, employees continued to work staggered schedules to reduce density on campus. August 2021 marked the first time in 16 months that all employees returned to campus in-person, on the same days, to prepare for the start of the 2021-22 year. The traditional “Opening Session” was held under a large tent as employees received awards for years of service, met new faculty and staff, and heard budget and other updates. Members of the college Board of Trustees joined the celebration, and international students and scholars were once again part of the campus community.

Dental Assisting Offers New Opportunities Davidson-Davie’s new dental assisting program officially launched in Fall 2021 as the first class of students was welcomed to campus. The program, which prepares students to function as integral members of the dental team, became a priority for the college following the opening of East Carolina University’s dental clinic on the Davidson Campus in 2014. The three-semester program leads to careers in dental offices and practices, specialty dental practices, hospitals, educational facilities, insurance companies, and for dental suppliers. The late Mark Davis, DDS, a trustee of the college and grandson of Herman and Texie Davis who owned the land on which the Davidson Campus was built, was a longtime champion for the new program. The first dental assisting students began classes seven months after his death.

College Receives 2021 Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization Davidson-Davie was one of five colleges named a 2021 recipient of the Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization, recognizing excellence in integrating international education throughout all facets of the Davidson-Davie experience. The award is given by NAFSA, an association of international educators and the world’s largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education.

“We are thrilled to receive the 2021 Simon Award at Davidson-Davie,” said Suzanne LaVenture, director of international education at the college. “It is a huge honor, especially since very few community colleges receive this recognition. The award is a testimony to our commitment to providing international education opportunities to all of our students, facilitating high quality learning experiences, and preparing students to be successful in our increasingly interdependent world.” Davidson-Davie students can experience global learning opportunities on campus and beyond. Over 440 students have participated in the Scholars of Global Distinction program, taking internationalized courses, participating in on-campus learning opportunities, and engaging in a global experience. The college continues to be one of only a handful of community colleges to participate in the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants program, hosting visiting scholars who spend an academic year teaching world languages on campus. For the 2021-22 year, Davidson-Davie is hosting a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from Argentina. The college offers several short-term, faculty-led study abroad programs each year with destinations including Costa Rica, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, France, Japan, and Argentina. Donors, the college’s foundation, the student government association, TRIO, and the student affairs division provide support for scholarships, enabling Davidson-Davie to benefit from a high-impact learning experience with proven future benefits.
Transfer Opportunities Provide Additional Career Options Many students attend Davidson-Davie so that they can later transfer to a four-year school to continue their education after receiving a two-year degree, diploma, or certificate. Students choose the transfer path for a variety of reasons, including wanting to earn foundational credits at an affordable price. Some students also realize after beginning their programs that a bachelor’s degree will open up additional career options. Davidson-Davie partners with a number of four-year institutions to create agreements that make transferring even easier for students. Recent agreements have created partnerships with Gardner-Webb University, Lees-McRae College, East Carolina University, Appalachian State University, Winston-Salem State University, and UNC Wilmington. Each agreement looks a little different. The partnership with Lees-McRae includes guaranteed admission for those who earn their associate degrees at Davidson-Davie. Students who transfer also may receive merit scholarships that discount tuition by up to 60 percent. Other discounts are available for those who choose online programs. At Gardner-Webb—which first partnered with Davidson-Davie for a nursing bridge program and now teaches classes in its doctoral program on the Davidson Campus -- students now can transfer seamlessly into the bachelor’s level program at Gardner-Webb from associate degree programs in the fields of human services, business and accounting. All three of the programs offer important opportunities for students who are already working in the field but desire to continue their education through an online and flexible program to meet work schedules and family obligations.

Honorary Degree During May’s Commencement Ceremony, Burr Sullivan became the eleventh person in the college’s 58-year history to receive an honorary degree. He was honored for his dedication to Davidson-Davie and the community, as well as to the statewide system of community colleges. Sullivan, a longtime Lexington resident, has served on the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges since 2017, and in September was elected chair. While his role on the statewide board makes him an advocate for all community colleges, his local ties are strong and his support for Davidson-Davie Community College unwavering over the years. Sullivan began his career in the furniture industry, working for Burlington, Dixie, and Henry Link Corp. He then bought Dorsett Printing, which he owned and operated until 2007. Through the years, his commitment to numerous civic, business, and educational initiatives was unparalleled. Especially during his time leading the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce from 2009 to 2017, Sullivan worked closely with Davidson-Davie as he championed strong relationships between the business community, economic development leaders, and educational partners. Burr Sullivan’s commitment to Davidson County, our region, and our state have been evident for close to 50 years. His support for education and our College makes us all proud to call him a great friend of Davidson-Davie Community College.
Strategic Plan | 2021-2025 Davidson-Davie’s strategic planning process—including surveys, listening sessions, and a collaborative strategic planning committee—has allowed the entire campus community to have input in shaping the college’s plan for the next four years. With final approval from the Board of Trustees in July, this plan will guide priorities and decision-making through 2025.
Mission Davidson-Davie Community College provides innovative and equitable learning experiences to empower individuals, transform lives, and prepare students for enhanced career and educational opportunities within a changing global community.
Vision Davidson-Davie Community College is a local and national leader that develops minds, inspires imaginations, and strengthens community.

Hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year by the Davidson-Davie Foundation; athletics and international education are examples of programs that benefit from Foundation support. The Foundation, in coordination with the college Board of Trustees, also pursues a variety of strategic initiatives to promote growth and excellence for Davidson-Davie.

Athletics
In April, the STORM men’s basketball team captured the runner-up title in the NJCAA Division II championship, becoming the first Division I or II team from North Carolina to play in the championship game. The women’s volleyball team finished its season 11-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference, led by Head Coach Steve Elliott and Assistant Coach McKenzie Burkhart. The team earned the STORM’s best finish since 2015. The men’s golf team finished the season as 2021 Region 10 Champions, with Head Coach Michael Branscome named 2021 Region 10 DII Men’s Golf Coach of the Year. The initial launch of STORM golf the previous year was complicated by COVID, but the growing team is recruiting both men and women golfers for future seasons. Davidson-Davie head basketball coach Matt Ridge became the college’s new athletics director on July 1, following the retirement of Kenneth Kirk. Ridge has been head coach of STORM basketball since 2007.

Grad wins SkillsUSA National Championship Davidson-Davie alum Nathan Brinkley won the SkillsUSA national championship competition in computer numerical control (CNC) machining. The championship, held virtually this year, took place in June. During the conference, approximately 3,700 outstanding career and technical education student state contest winners competed in over 100 different hands-on trade, technical and leadership fields. 117 North Carolinians from 19 high schools and 8 community colleges participated. “We are very proud of Nathan’s commitment and accomplishment. He is a very hardworking student and is highly deserving of any recognition he receives,” said Kerry Smith, Brinkley’s instructor and a Davidson-Davie faculty member. 23
