When we updated our name to Davidson-Davie Community College in 2021, we were committing to the future—and to being the college that our students and communities need going forward. We take the same approach in all that we do, from our academic programs, to our student support services, to our plans for growth. For all these endeavors, we acknowledge where we are and how far we’ve come, but then we focus on where we’re headed.
In the same way, the entire campus community engaged in preparations for our successful Fall 2022 SACSCOC reaffirmation visit, as well as the initiative we have chosen to undertake as part of the accreditation process—enhancing the online student experience. No, online learning isn’t new—but we know the evolution of education, technology, and culture means that we want to align our efforts with the future of educational excellence.
We see the future everywhere on campus, in fact—even in bulldozers and detour signs. The year 2022 marked the start of a long-awaited road improvement project on US 29/70 in front of our Davidson Campus. In our future we see the physical expansion of our existing campuses, providing new opportunities for our students and helping our communities thrive.
We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you for your support—now and into the future!
Dr. Darrin L. Hartness
President, Davidson-Davie Community College
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Performance Measures for Student Success
Davidson-Davie Earns Top Ranking
I needed a second chance.
After sharpening his academic skills at Davidson-Davie, Joshua Barker is now studying business at UNC Chapel Hill. He plans to get his MBA from a premier university—Harvard or MIT, preferably—and then work in the financial services industry.
Achieving the Dream 2021
Leader College of Distinction
In February, Davidson-Davie was designated a Leader College of Distinction by Achieving the Dream (ATD), a national nonprofit dedicated to advancing community colleges as hubs of equity and mobility in their communities.
“I am very proud of the faculty and staff at Davidson-Davie for earning this distinction. It is an honor to work alongside devoted individuals who put equity in outcomes at the center of our work to improve student success,” said Dr. Darrin Hartness, president of Davidson-Davie Community College. “Having been an Achieving the Dream college for over a decade, Davidson-Davie has benefited from this partnership and our students have realized improved outcomes as a result.”
ATD created the Leader College of Distinction award in 2018 to recognize colleges that have pursued and met challenging student success goals, often earning Leader College status several times. Leader Colleges of Distinction must show improvement in three or more student outcome metrics, including at least one lagging indicator such as completion or transfer with an earned baccalaureate. Leader Colleges of Distinction are also required to show they have reduced equity gaps in at least two metrics for at least two student groups. These requirements recognize and motivate sustained and proactive reform efforts that result in greater improvements in student success and equity.
Davidson-Davie is part of the ATD Network, made up of 300+ colleges committed to advancing equity and supporting student success at their institutions and throughout their communities. Davidson-Davie has been a member of the ATD Network since 2010 and has held Leader College status since 2012.

Success College Transfer Performance: 2019-2020 Students
As part of the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), Davidson-Davie is evaluated annually on seven performance measures for student success. For 2022, which is based on data reporting in 2020-21, Davidson-Davie was the only college to earn Above Average or Excellence levels on all seven performance measures. The College received performance-based funding for each of the seven measures because all of its scores were above the baseline.

Davidson-Davie Announces Largest Healthcare Apprenticeship in North Carolina
In August 2022, Davidson-Davie announced the creation of the largest healthcare apprenticeship in North Carolina, with Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist signing on as the college’s first healthcare partner under the new agreement. Through this partnership, students are able to work in a healthcare profession while taking courses related to their career goals.
The partnership between Davidson-Davie and Wake Forest Baptist includes Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technology, Central Sterile Processing, Surgical Technology, and Nurse Aide. The college will work with other healthcare partners to establish apprenticeships in Health Information Technology, EMT, and Paramedic.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer our students—and future students—an incredible array of opportunities within the healthcare sector, through which they can pursue an educational pathway toward their chosen career while also having a stable income,” said Holly Myers, dean of health sciences at Davidson-Davie. “And not only that, but we are supporting the healthcare workforce and the communities in which we live by educating new professionals to fill muchneeded jobs.”
This partnership builds off the success of the 2021 collaboration between Davidson-Davie and Wake Forest Baptist to launch the state’s first Registered Nurse apprenticeship program.
Engaging with The Community
From visits to high schools, to outreach at local fairs and community events, to advertisements tailored to reach certain ages and interest groups, Davidson-Davie staff regularly look for new ways to connect with the communities we serve.
Over the past year, the college has launched a new effort to better serve the Spanish-speaking community and increase enrollment in both associate degree programs and short-term training classes. Outreach includes a variety of approaches, including text messaging, visiting church services, the translation of print materials, and radio interviews. The development of more bilingual or Spanish short-term training classes and free small business workshops also has been a focus.
“Knowing that intentional outreach and small changes to existing programs are bringing more students to higher education is incredibly rewarding,” said Monica Belford, who became director of community engagement Latino programs last year. “And these students are incredible, really helping enrich campus life and making us stronger as a college.”
Gabriel Garcia Salas has fond memories of watching his father work on cars. Today he’s preparing for his future by studying Automotive Systems at Davidson-Davie through a partnership with his high school.

Student Success | 2021–2025
Davidson-Davie’s strategic planning process—including surveys, listening sessions, and a collaborative strategic planning committee—has allowed the entire campus community to have input in shaping the college’s plan through 2025.
Mission
Davidson-Davie Community College provides innovative and equitable learning experiences to empower individuals, transform lives, and prepare students for enhanced career and educational opportunities within a changing global community.
Vision
Davidson-Davie Community College is a local and national leader that develops minds, inspires imaginations, and strengthens community.
Accreditation and Continual Improvement
New initiative will focus on the online student
Davidson-Davie is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. After a successful SACSCOC reaffirmation visit in Fall 2022, Davidson-Davie’s next 10-year accreditation will be officially approved in June 2023 by the SACSCOC Board.
THEME ONE Champion Learning
GOAL ONE Foster engaging and equitable learning environments to improve student learning and growth
GOAL TWO Expand postsecondary degree and credential opportunities for adult learners in Davidson and Davie counties
GOAL THREE Create and sustain strategic professional learning opportunities for all full-time and part-time faculty and staff
THEME THREE Build Partnerships
GOAL ONE Expand and invest in partnerships in Davidson and Davie counties focused on economic and workforce development
GOAL TWO Build sustainable pathways between Davidson-Davie and other education opportunities
THEME TWO Prioritize Relationships
GOAL ONE Guide students through clear program pathways supported by mentorship networks to improve retention, persistence, and completion
GOAL TWO Advance an inclusive and equity-minded campus culture for students, faculty, and staff
As part of the accreditation process, colleges undertake a variety of initiatives to improve their campuses. Davidson-Davie has chosen to engage in a five-year process to enhance the online student experience, including online classes and online support.
The college developed this plan in a comprehensive and collaborative way. Within the strategic planning process in Spring 2021, the college engaged faculty, staff, students, members of the Board of Trustees, and community partners to identify key student success initiatives for the coming years. The campus community then selected the digital campus project due to its holistic focus on student success, from recruitment to completion.
This project, dubbed StormOnline, will improve the online student pathway and will be evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative measures:
OUTCOME 1 Increase fall-to-fall persistence rates for online students
THEME FOUR Invest in Our Future
GOAL ONE Foster a healthy and engaging working environment for faculty and staff to improve employee retention and culture
GOAL TWO Grow overall enrollment in curriculum and short-term training programs
GOAL THREE Build and maintain infrastructure to support campus growth
OUTCOME 2 Increase credit momentum for online students in their first term
OUTCOME 3 Provide students with targeted, specific, and timely support while learning online
OUTCOME 4 Increase course success rates in online courses
OUTCOME 5 Close equity gaps in success rates in online courses
Together, through the StormOnline initiative, the campus community is looking toward the future of online learning and creating new pathways to educational excellence.

Return to Global Travel
Following two years of COVID-related travel disruptions, groups from Davidson-Davie enjoyed excursions to Bordeaux, France and Cape Town, South Africa in June 2022.
A new partnership with the University of Bordeaux led to this year’s trip themed “Entrepreneurship and Technology.” The program was open to community college students across North Carolina. From 90 applicants, 20 students from seven colleges were selected to participate, and faculty from three other colleges assisted Davidson-Davie in leading the program. The Transatlantic Mobility Grant through the French Embassy and scholarships from each participating college helped support the trip.

Faculty Rank
In an effort to recognize faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, service, and professionalism, Davidson-Davie invites faculty to apply for promotion in rank. Criteria considered in determining rank include teaching experience, teaching effectiveness, professional activity, and professional conduct.
During the 2021–22 academic year, the Faculty Rank Review Committee of the Faculty Senate reviewed all submitted applications and portfolios. Upon approval of the Board of Trustees, four faculty members received rank promotion.

Graduation 2022
The 2022 commencement ceremonies marked the college’s return to a traditional, in-person graduation day after COVID-19 forced a virtual ceremony in 2020 and a drive-through event in 2021.
“Circumstances over the past 26 months have challenged our faculty and staff to find new, innovative ways to support student success and deliver instruction,” said Dr. Darrin Hartness, president of the college. “Today, together, we are stronger.”
Joshua Barker, president of the student government association, told graduates, “Our past does not define our future. No matter where you are on life’s road, you can always change.”
Kevin Firquin, chair of the college board of trustees, encouraged graduates to remember that being trustworthy and respectful of others, as well as observing the highest ethics both inside and outside the workplace, would serve them well. “On behalf of the entire board of trustees,” he added, “Congratulations, Class of 2022!”

Support for STORM Athletics Visible in Brinkley Gym
Community support for athletics is hard to miss in Brinkley Gym these days. A new name on the court floor and signage on the outside of the gym comes courtesy of three of the STORM’s biggest fans—and newest sponsors.
“We are so grateful to Justin Strickland of Strickland Brothers 10 Minute Oil Change, Todd Hunt of Jerry Hunt Supercenter, and Josh Hill of The Hill Group for their support of the athletic program at Davidson-Davie,” said Matt Ridge, director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach. “It takes an incredible number of people to surround our teams with the support and encouragement that really make a difference, and I just can’t say enough about these loyal fans.”
STORM Sponsors
“Here at Jerry Hunt Supercenter, we spend every day interacting with the local community and couldn’t be more grateful to be in business here. And part of that relationship is that we give back, just as the community supports us when they buy their cars. We love being partners with Davidson-Davie Community College and are proud to support athletes and education.”
TODD HUNT
“I am a very proud alumnus of our community college and thankful to still have such strong ties to the college.”
JUSTIN STRICKLAND
“I’m so excited about our partnership with Davidson-Davie Athletics and the opportunity we have to be part of something bigger than ourselves.”
Phil Ford Visits Campus, Helps Unveil STORM Hall of Fame
Justin Strickland and Justin Glover became first inductees into new Hall of Fame.
On April 30, basketball legend Phil Ford was on hand to celebrate Davidson-Davie’s first athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Ford, who got his start as a UNC Tar Heel and later was an assistant coach alongside Dean Smith, played in the NBA and on the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team that brought home a gold medal. During his visit to Davidson-Davie, he offered remarks and helped inaugurate the first two athletes into the STORM Hall of Fame.
Justin Strickland played on the inaugural 2007-2008 STORM basketball team at Davidson-Davie, which went 22-7 and was ranked as high as ninth in the country after having only six weeks to build the new team. Strickland averaged 34.1 points per game and led the nation in scoring in all divisions in NJCAA and NCAA during the 2007-2008 season. He scored a remarkable 954 points in his one season with the STORM while averaging 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. He shot 58% from the field, 42.7% from the three-point line, and 86% from the free-throw line. Strickland was an academic All-American, took 21 credit hours in one semester, worked a full-time job, and was named a First Team All-American while at Davidson-Davie.
Justin Glover played at Davidson-Davie in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, leading the STORM to regularseason championships, two regional championships, two district championships, and two national tournaments. He was named to the Third Team All-American as a freshman and First Team AllAmerican as a sophomore. Glover also was named conference player of the year. He scored 1,285 points in two years, the most ever by a Davidson-Davie player. He transferred to Winston-Salem State University on a full scholarship for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons. Glover led the Rams to two CIAA championships and two national tournaments and was named the CIAA MVP in 2021 and First Team All-BAAD in 2013, a prestigious award within historically black colleges and universities. He was also selected to the First Team All-State College Division in both 2012 and 2013. Glover played professionally for NBA G-League Delaware 87ers, now the Delaware Blue Coats, and currently runs a youth sports program and AAU basketball organization.
