DCCC Summer Camps 2020 Play, Grow, and Make Things GO! Want summer camps to keep your elementary, middle, or high school student active all summer long? Would you want your student engaged and inspired in hands on activities that could spark an interest in science and technology, community leadership, sports, or the arts? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then Davidson County Community College has a camp (or multiple camps) for you! With over 40 camp experiences for a variety of age groups, your camper will not only have a blast but learn along the way. Also new this year, we are offering four new camps on our Davie County Campus.

How To REGISTER: Begin Your Summer Adventure at DavidsonCCC.edu/Camps. Registering for camps is as easy as ever. This year we are offering solely on-line registration through a secure system. This will allow for quicker registration, confirmation, and ease in completing the necessary documents to ensure your camper’s safety. Find the registration and payment forms at DavidsonCCC.edu/Camps. NOTE: There is limited space available for each camp. Lunch supervision is available for campers attending a morning and afternoon camp on the same day. Camp staff will accompany campers from lunch to their afternoon camp. Questions? Roman Gladiator Gladiators! The main event in Ancient Rome’s Bread and Circuses. Train in Sword, Shield, Trident, Net, and more. Learn how the powerful used these spectacles to shape history. Dates: June 15 – 19 Mon – Fri, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Grade: 4th – 9th Cost: $110

American Revolution The American Revolution: The Colonies demand Freedom from Great Britain! Learn the events leading up to the “Shot Heard Round the World” to the British surrender. Train the basics of the American Militia, the “Minute Man,” with squad tactics and gunnery. Dates: June 15 – 19 Mon – Fri, 9:00 a.m. – Noon Grade: 4th – 9th Cost: $110

Cosmetology & Esthetics “The Total Image” Learn the latest trends in our beauty industry from the guidance and instruction of a Licensed Cosmetology Instructor. Each participant has the opportunity to do hair, nails, facials, and makeup. The students will enjoy a fun-filled week that will leave them feeling glamorous! They will make fun creations like DIY bath bombs and sugar scrubs. They will learn fantasy/special effects hair and makeup. We bring YouTube to you!

Also, we will have a fashion show at the end of the week for family and friends. Each day camp will end with team building activities that boosts self-esteem and positivity. Students will leave camp feeling confident and pampered!

KRE8ivU Music Production Learn how to produce your own professional music and audio projects using the most current software and industry tools available. The objective is to help students find their creative talents by learning advanced skills in music. Students create everything in the songs including instrumentation, tempo, effects, and final mix. They experience writing lyrics for their songs as well as arranging. Lead and background vocals are recorded by the students also. Students learn the basics of recording tracks, signal path, equalization, and more. Dates: June 15 – 19 Mon – Fri, 9:00 a.m. – Noon Grade: 6th – 12th Cost: $230

Self Defense This class will be directed by Instructors from Impact Martial Arts of Lexington. Your teenager will learn how to keep themselves safe in public, learn how to defend themselves against grabs, holds, strikes and punches. Students will learn how to recognize dangerous situations and what to do to protect themselves. Dates: June 19 Fri, 8:00 a.m. – Noon Grade: 6th – 12th Cost: $40

Aquarist for a Day Spend a day finding out what it takes to care for these delicate creatures at DCCC. You’ll be part of laboratory operations as you help care for the Zoo & Aquarium Science Program’s teaching animal collection. In a day we’ll discover hidden features of water with water quality testing, feed everything from sharks to anemones, provide enrichment through animal painting, and even get elbow deep to keep the animals healthy. Come get your feet wet as an aquarist for a day! Receive your own personalized lab coat. Camp Move & Play Do you ever wish you could make time stand still and keep your 18 month old - 3 year old preschooler to yourself for some precious play time? Take a break from your daily routine and enjoy the opportunity to spend a fun-filled, high energy hour of music and movement WITH your child during Camp Move and Play! You will explore making music with lots of instruments, dancing, singing and, best of all, making beautiful memories TOGETHER! This class is open to 2 adults per child and to anyone who would like to participate with the child - friend(s) or relative(s). Basketball Students will work with basketball coaches to learn how to develop new skills and reinforce fundamentals.

Golf Students will having an exciting week learning all things golf. Learn about the game, equipment, course management, golf etiquette, and so much more. Students will meet at Winding Creek Golf Course in Thomasville. This camp is mostly outside. Please dress comfortably and bring a rain jacket and hat. Storm’n thru the Kitchen Students will learn cooking and baking fundamentals in a hands on “Savory and Sweet” environment, preparing delicious meals and treats. Each aspiring cook will receive their own personalized apron. Students will meet and be picked up at Thomasville Senior High. Black Rocket Camps YouTube Content Creators explores the variety of content and personalities that exist on YouTube and how to find your own niche. Develop your on-camera presence, channel branding, and professional editing skills. Dates: June 15 – 19 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

STEM Jr. This camp enhances understanding of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through exciting and fun activities which will include Lego Robotics, engineering and the exploration of the properties of air, bubbles and things that glow. Pre-School Rocks Pre-School Rocks Through the Classics by highlighting well-known music and children’s literature. Children will be introduced to a classic children’s book each day of camp with fun and interactive activities such as art, movement and games that correlate to the storybook theme . Each book will be paired with classical music that relates to the story as well. It will be a fun week exploring books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon and other classics for preschoolers. Archery The use of the bow has recently been featured in books and films. We’re excited to bring its use to life and introduce your child to the sport of archery! The camp experience will cover the basics of competitive archery including form, rules and training (including strength conditioning, that maximizes an athlete’s ability and safety). Your camper will also learn about the history of the international use of the bow and its role in various societies and civilizations. Roman Legion A week filled with lessons on the development and tactics of the legions, insignias, leaders and their battles. Activities include: being a Skirmisher-Making and using a sling, throwing a javelin, using a spear in a Phalanx, longsword and shield, gladius and shield, shield wall and Gestodo Shield formation. Brain Chase Escape Rooms Escape from the Smithsonian. Dinosaurs, gemstones, and whales...oh my! This race through one of America’s most treasured museums will put your scientific knowledge to the test. Will you escape and catch the bad guys? The Ivory Queen. A missing chess piece. A mysterious coffee shop. A jungle full of perilous traps. To find the prize, you’ll need to learn about the rules and history of chess, and match wits against some of the world’s best players. The Quill of Beethoven. What happened to the feather quill that penned Ode to Joy? Time to become an expert on Beethoven, his works, his contemporaries, and his instruments. Dates & Ages: Ages 8 – 14 | July 6 – 10 | 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Cost: $165

Escape from the Library. How familiar are you with the Dewey Decimal System? What research tools are available at your local libraries? It’s time to find out, because you’ve just been locked inside – and to escape, you’ll need to learn. (P.S. This is one of the Brain Chase team’s favorite rooms.) Dr. Freminet’s Underwater Machine. Time to get your feet wet! Escaping this underwater adventure will require players to learn some basics of marine biology, the history of scuba diving, and some facts about the world’s oceans. Dates & Ages: Ages 8 – 14 | July 27 – 31 | 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Cost: $165

Fencing Learn the art and history of one of the original modern Olympic sports: Fencing! This sports camp is geared for absolute beginners. Skill development, conditioning, footwork, blade work, and tactics will be covered. A series of games and drills will teach the student the essentials of fencing. By week’s end, students should be able to fence in a bout. Dates: July 6 – 10 Mon – Fri, 9:00 a.m. – Noon Grade: 4th – 9th Cost: $110

Pirate Join us for a fun filled week of learning all about pirates. Fun activities include making pirate flags, pirate sword, boat hook and grappling hook (all with foam). We will have a mockup of a deck gun, learn about boarding sequence and about some well known pirates, such as the infamous Blackbeard! Summer Art Camp Learn to draw, paint, and create using your imagination inspired by nature. We will begin with the basics as you challenge your skills in the world of art! Dates: July 6 – 10 Mon – Fri, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Grade: 6th – 12th Cost: $140

Photography 101 Students will begin their week with an in-depth lesson of how to use their camera. They will explore different types of photography and then take their photos to the next level in Photo Editing. Students will need a digital camera. Young Artist Discovery Discover the art of drawing, painting, and crafts as we explore nature for inspiration! Dates: July 6 – 10 Mon – Fri, 8:00 a.m. – Noon Grade: 3rd – 5th Cost: $140

Hands On Join us for an all day camp that is full of activities to expand your imagination through learning skills like sewing, playing a keyboard, and working with clay. Campers will participate in various sport activities and will race to unlock the clues in a scavenger hunt. Enjoy a fun- filled week using your hands! High Adventure Join us for a week of thrilling adventures. Activities include swimming, hiking, paddle boarding/kayaking and ropes course. Activities will be confirmed 1 week before camp. This is a high energy camp !! Students will need to be able to swim and able to hike. In case of excessive rain, indoor activities will be in place of outdoor activities.

Machining & Engineering Students will learn how things are produced--from cars to the knobs on radios. We will learn about the different design and prototyping processes that products go through from the original idea or concept to finished product. We will also cover machining processes that are used to make these products, including manual machining, CNC machining, and 3D printing. Participants will have hands-on activities to make projects of their own. Dates: July 13 – 17 Mon – Fri, 8:00 a.m. – Noon Grade: 5th – 8th Cost: $135

KRE8ivU Cinematography Students learn the art of moviemaking by doing. They take the roles of scriptwriters, camera operators, lighting crew, set crew, film editors, and more. In the process, they learn career paths by experience, learn team building, and collaboration to mention just a few of the soft skill-sets our students get to practice. Classes will teach you how to create and edit videos like a professional.

CSI: DCCC Delve into the world of crime scene investigation and learn what it takes to work in these vocations. Take a crime scene and carry it from an investigation to a courtroom verdict with some of our hard-working local law enforcement officers and judicial system officials. YOUTHpreneur (Davie) YOUTHpreneur will nurture entrepreneurship through collaboration where participants will have to think outside of themselves and learn from others’ perspectives. Students will have the opportunity to meet and engage with business and community leaders as well as entrepreneurs during this interactive week while identifying issues in our surrounding communities. Teams will be chosen to develop and present plans of action to alleviate the issues. This is a great chance to get engaged in the community, build leadership skills, and learn to turn a problem into an opportunity!
