A Child’s Place (http://www.achildsplace.org/ )

Mission: To erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education. Opportunity: •

Lunch Buddy: Provide a mentoring friendship for a child. Each volunteer is assigned a student to be their “buddy.” The volunteer comes to school once a week to have lunch with their buddy, talk, play games or read. Tutor: Assist students with homework, study for a test or develop their reading and/or math skills. Each tutor visits their assigned student weekly, witnessing the effect their participation has on the student’s educational progress. Classroom Assistant: Come to an assigned class once a week for two hours (9:00 – 11:00 or 1:00 – 3:00) and assist the teacher in facilitating classroom activities. Responsibilities include individual tutoring, leading small group learning activities, art projects, checking papers and other helpful tasks.

Ada Jenkins Center (https://www.adajenkins.org/)

Mission: The mission of the Ada Jenkins Center is to empower the people of our communities to break the cycle of poverty through the integration of health, education, and human services. Opportunity: Volunteers are needed in the areas of human services, adult and early childhood education, medical and dental, special events and fundraising, and administrative support. Volunteer hours vary between 9-5pm, when the center is open, however we also need support on the weekends and evenings during clinics and special events. Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen (www.angelsandsparrows.org) Mission: To help fight hunger in Huntersville and adjacent towns of Cornelius and Davidson as well as in the North Mecklenburg County unincorporated areas. Mission: Our Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Our Vision is that all children achieve success in life. Opportunity: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas needs volunteers who can spend a lunch hour with a student at Cornelius Elementary School. Volunteers can share lunch with their ‘Little”, go to the school library and do homework, or play a board game. Beds for Kids (http://bedsforkids.org/) Mission: To provide beds and essential furniture to children and their families in need. Opportunity: Volunteers are needed throughout the year to assist in picking up beds and furniture from donors, cleaning and organizing furniture in our warehouse and delivering beds and furniture to clients in need. Volunteer opportunities are available from 9-11:30 am and 1-3:30 pm Tuesday through Friday and 9-12 pm for volunteer groups on Saturday morning. Carolina Raptor Center (http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/) Mission: Carolina Raptor Center is dedicated to the conservation of raptors. Opportunity: •

Docents: Educate visitors outside on the trail about raptors and raptor conservation. We are looking for friendly, outgoing people that are passionate about wildlife. Time requirement is a minimum of 6 hours per month with a minimum of 6 months of service. Student Service Days: Help outside with landscaping. Great for students looking for community service hours. Time commitment of 4 hours with a minimum of 1 day of service.

Carolina Thread Trail and Catawba Lands Conservancy (http://catawbalands.org/) Mission: Carolina Thread Trail is this region’s developing connected network of 1,590 miles of planned natural surface trail, greenway and blueway that reaches 2.3 million people in 15 counties in North and South Carolina. Currently, over 260 miles of trail and 170 miles of blueway are open to the public. The Thread Trail partners with 88 municipalities and six land trusts to implement the vision. The Thread Trail is a non-profit organization led by the Catawba Lands Conservancy and supported by the Foundation for the Carolinas. Opportunity: We have regular workdays to maintain our trails and help preserve our local environment. The location of workdays varies but we provide all tools and no prior experience is needed. Workdays are usually a 3-hour commitment on a weekend. Caterpillar Ministries (http://www.caterpillarministries.org/) Mission: That low-income families in the Lake Norman area will have a relationship with Jesus that enables them to become all that God has created them to be. Opportunity: •

Middle & High School Tutoring: 2 hours per week, 11401 McCoy Road in Huntersville, volunteer. About 45 students from Huntington Green receive a snack, computer access and help with homework, studying, and projects each week. We also assist students and their families who are English Language Learners in the public school system through advocacy and additional support. Middle & High School Boys Soccer & Bible Study: 2 hours per week, 11401 McCoy Road in Huntersville, volunteer. Come play soccer with our guys in fellowship, and then stay to invest in their lives. Elementary Tutoring: 2 hours per week, Blythe Elementary School, volunteer. Come tutor one of our elementary school aged students after school in math and language arts to help close the achievement gap for our young learners! Preschool Home Visits: 2 hours per week, 11624 Frontier Place in Huntersville, volunteer. Come help with our early childhood literacy home visit program by visiting our littlest kids in their homes and working on early literacy with their moms.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/) Mission: The mission of CMS is to maximize academic achievement by every student in every school. Opportunity: Volunteer opportunities for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools include mentoring students in a variety of ways such as monthly lunch buddies, classroom visits, reading a book together and/or sharing an activity. Volunteers are also needed to support our North Star reading initiative. Reading buddies read with students in grades 3rd, 7th and 9th weekly for one hour. Lastly, proctors for end-of-grade/end-of-course testing are needed twice a year, in January and May. Proctors are trained and support licensed teachers who administer the test. Volunteers are urgently needed at the following schools: Blythe Elementary, Bradley Middle School, Barnette Elementary, Alexander Middle School, Stoney Creek Elementary, Croft Community School, David Cox Elementary, Hornet’s Nest Elementary, Winding Springs Elementary and Mallard Creek Elementary. Charlotte Rescue Mission (http://charlotterescuemission.org/) Mission: Charlotte Rescue Mission is transforming lives in the name of Christ by serving people struggling with addiction, poverty, or hopelessness with the goal of returning them to society as productive, self-sufficient citizens. Opportunity: Charlotte Rescue Missions offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups to get involved. Regular opportunities include serving meals, spending time with residents, administrative tasks, and organizing donation drives. Additionally, building, painting, and refurbishing projects often fall into the hands of our dedicated volunteer groups. These opportunities are available year-round. At the Rebound Learning Center, there is a great need for volunteers to work one-on-one with residents in tutoring and mentoring capacities as they work towards vocational and educational goals while going through our recovery program. Volunteer opportunities usually range from 1.5 to 2 hours and are located on our Rebound Men's and Dove's Nest Women's campuses. Community Free Clinic (https://communityfreeclinic.org/) Mission: To help Cabarrus County adults move toward wellness by providing comprehensive healthcare and pharmacy services. Opportunity: •

Administrative support for clinical services to include patient check-in, record management tasks, translation for patients, follow-up/reminder calls for clinic and pharmacy services, other administrative support as needed. Clinic services: Tuesday 9-5:00pm and evenings 6-8:30 pm 2nd & 3rd week each month; Wednesday and Thursday 9-5:00 pm. Eligibility & enrollment services for HealthNet to include intake with applicants, follow-up/reminder calls, translation for patients, program administration support. Community Link (http://communitylinknc.org/) Mission: The mission of Community Link is to empower individuals and families to obtain and sustain safe, decent, and affordable housing. This is accomplished through two primary service lines: Housing to Homeless and Asset Building (Financial Empowerment) for people with low- to moderate-incomes. Opportunity: •

Social Media Enthusiast(s): Work with the Chief Advancement Officer to expand Community Link's social media presence with consistent relevant posts about the work of the agency, the needs of people with limited wealth, housing and homeless issues, partnerships with community agencies, and corporate investors, etc. o Hours per week: approximately 2 hours weekly and prefer annual commitment through the school year; extend through summer too if this is your preference o Location: your choice! work at Community Link office in Uptown Charlotte and/or remotely after thorough orientation o Skills: creative out of the box thinker, social media expertise, research skills, expert writing for engaging content Videographer(s)/Producer/Editor: Storytelling is paramount for sharing the impact of Community Link with donors, funders, collaborative partners, and emerging philanthropists. Our goal is to produce consistent inspiring mini-videos of satisfied

customers (our clients) and post these on YouTube and our website. Work with Community Link's housing coordinators who seek a consistent front desk Intake Specialist to manage incoming calls, screen and redirect calls to appropriate staff or community partner, welcome drop-ins and guests, etc. o Hours per week: desk needs to be covered 8am - 5pm, Monday - Friday; can share this position with other(s); 2 primary shifts 8am - 1pm or 1pm - 5pm. o Skills required: interest in serving others, customer-friendly and expert communication skills required, strong administrative/clerical skills, etc. Special Events Coordinator(s): Community Link sponsors one main fundraising event each April. "Sweet Escapes" is a chocolate fest complete with appetizers and desserts, libations, silent and live auctions, donor appeals, corporate sponsors/underwriters, and mission moments with our customers. Work with the Chief Advancement Officer, a professional event planner and an experienced events committee to ensure this event reaches its potential. Community Pregnancy Center of Lake Norman (http://lakenormancpc.org/) Opportunity: The volunteer opportunities may vary from working in office on administrative duties to working directly with clients as a client advocate. Community School of the Arts (http://www.csarts.org) Mission: Transforming lives and inspiring community through outstanding and accessible arts education. Opportunity: Community School of the Arts is seeking a Development and Communications Intern for the summer of 2018. This part-time intern will work roughly 15 hours per week (flexible scheduling). The Development and Communications Intern will assist Development Manager and VP of Institutional Advancement with all activities of the Development Office, especially communications activities, including but not limited to: annual fund, donor stewardship, donor research, database management, social media, corporate sponsorship and administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have a passion for accessible arts education and a desire to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector/development field. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • • • • • • •

Davidson Farmer’s Market (https://www.davidsonfarmersmarket.org/) Mission: The mission of Davidson Farmer’s Market is to sponsor a weekly farmer’s Market in Davidson which provides locally grown food, educates the public about nutrition and the importance of eating locally grown foods and offers musical entertainment, special events and cooking and other demonstrations to create a community festival for the Town. Opportunity: We are in need of volunteers to assist with market set-up on Saturday mornings as well as being present around the market to help shoppers with any market related questions they may have. Mission: Davidson Green School’s mission is to create a more sustainable future through education. Through hands on and experiential curriculum, students learn how to put the social, economical, and environmental aspects of sustainability into action, creating a more compassionate and regenerative world. Opportunity: •

Resource Generation: Identifying grant and funding sources as well as writing grants. Specific funding needs include natural playscape for study and connecting children to nature as well as additional funding for our aquaponics and community giving program. All projects will be used for education within the school and community. Program Development for Students: o Technology program development for students K-6. Simple coding, video editing, and other technology interests a Davidson student would enjoy teaching. Minimum time commitment: 2 times a month o Visual arts program development: lead programs with children K-6. Davidson Housing Coalition (https://davidsonhousing.org/)

Mission: Davidson Housing Coalition believes that Davidson’s traditional mix of people in all income levels is fundamental to our community and distinguishes us as a town. The mission of Davidson Housing Coalition is to work with the larger community to preserve and create affordable housing options, and to prepare families and individuals for financial stability and home-ownership. Opportunity: Davidson Housing Coalition (DHC) has a variety of tasks that volunteers can help with. Below are some of the most pressing volunteer needs. •

Assist with social media and marketing: Creating content for social media and engage with followers; create client success stories to share DHC’s impact with the community; assist with e-mail marketing; Implement a DHC website overhaul (WordPress platform) and assist with increasing the functionality and visual appeal of the site; Organize/support fundraising events: DHC holds two main fundraisers, Holidays for Hope and Housing and Souper Bowl, in December and February. Volunteers will help with planning at our office (and possibly on campus) and can also help with events on the day of; Identify and apply for grants; Maintain donor database; Perform administrative tasks

The ideal volunteer would be organized, flexible, and able to work independently. All positions have flexible hours but most require the volunteer to be at the DHC office (walkable from campus). DHC is located at 220-A Sloan Street (next to the Ada Jenkins Center). DHC is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday; the anticipated time commitment is 5-12 hours a week. Davidson Lands Conservancy (http://www.davidsonlands.org/) Mission: DLC's mission is to save land in and around Davidson. Opportunity: The DLC hosts the paid, part-time Roy Alexander Internship every summer for a Davidson College student. We also have a host of volunteer opportunities for students during the school year--unpaid internship opportunities, volunteer opportunities with our Run for Green event, children's education at the Farmers Market, assisting staff with stewardship responsibilities on our properties, as well as social media and communications assistance. Davidson Youth Baseball Association – DYBA (http://www.davidsonyouthbaseball.com/) Mission: DYBA's goal is to provide an environment that enhances a player's self-esteem and embodies the spirit of teamwork, sportsmanship, and community. Our goal every year is to create a fun baseball experience for all kids and families and to teach the fundamentals of the game. We measure our success every season by the number of kids that are excited to come back and play baseball with us again the following season. Opportunity: DYBA is looking for an intern to drive social media and marketing opportunities in our community. The social media intern will work directly with the Board and the Coaches to report on and promote the successes of the different teams in the league. We currently use tools offered from Blue Sombrero and GameChanger to capture relevant information. With the use of the GameChanger app, the stories and the game summaries come pre-written so the investment is mostly in fin- tuning and distributing to the member list. We are looking for an intern who has an understanding of the game as well as a passion for creating a buzz and promoting the successes of the kids. The ultimate goal of the intern role is help increase awareness and increase family participation in DYBA. We estimate that the weekly time commitment will be approx 2-3 hours per week for the fall season (September - October) and the same for the spring season (March-May). Davidson United Methodist Church (http://www.davidsonumc.org) Mission: We will be the body of Christ in our Community through worship, education, fellowship and service. Opportunity: Davidson United Methodist Church has implemented a program called "Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin' By World" for low income working people who are seeking to gain skills and build resources to improve their and their children's stability in life. Almost all the participants are single mothers who have been referred by agencies such as Ada Jenkins, Habitat for Humanity, Davidson Housing Coalition, Hope House and by past participants. The class meets for 16 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6:00 - 8:00 pm October - February. Once participants graduate, they can elect to enter into Phase II, which we are calling Bridge Builders. This program also meets every Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm from September through June, and involves continuing education classes related to things like emotional health, finances, job readiness, parenting, etc as well as team meetings with other GA grads and trained church members who will walk along side them and support them in achieving their goals. We have at least one and maybe two Latino participants who need an English/Spanish translator. The translator would sit with the participant in whatever meeting they are in and assist them as needed to explain in Spanish what is being discussed in English. Our goal is to develop a small team of translators who can then be assigned on Wednesday nights as their schedule permits, so that no one has to commit to every Wednesday night on the schedule. Heart Math Tutoring (http://hearttutoring.org/) Mission: Heart's mission is to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Opportunity: Heart is a Charlotte nonprofit that connects volunteers to students in highpoverty elementary schools as one-on-one math tutors. With on-site support and a userfriendly hands-on curriculum, over 60% of Heart tutors are able to volunteer while working full time. 41% of our 750 volunteers in 2016/17 were young professionals, and 13% were college students. For the 2017/18 school year, Heart will need over 1,000 volunteers to commit to tutor either for 30 minutes (one student) or one hour (two students back-to-back) per week at any of Heart’s school sites. Times are typically offered as early as 7:45AM or 8:00AM, with other options at lunchtime or early afternoon, Monday through Thursday. No prior

In 2016/17, 100% of volunteers rated the experience positive, and 99% said they would recommend tutoring to others. 98% of over 1,500 students to date have met program growth goals in math, set with guidance from elementary math specialists at UNC Charlotte and CMS. Mission: To provide expert programming for high school girls to inspire their intellectual, physical, and social growth while preparing them for a lifestyle of leadership Opportunity: Young Elites Interns lead and assist with various in-office tasks and serve as Mentors/Volunteers for our high school girls throughout the year. Hours are flexible and dependent upon Intern availability, as long as within our office hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) and some Saturdays 12-2pm. Mission: We are on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Opportunity: YWCA Central Carolinas has 10 Youth Learning Centers spread throughout Charlotte. Our program has a literacy focus: YWCA’s Youth Programs work to eliminate generational poverty and increase economic mobility for children living in low-income areas by providing a high quality Literacy Focused After school and Summer Program. Literacy strategies include i-Ready – Diagnostic & Instruction, an innovative adaptive assessment and engaging personalized instruction program for reading.
