History of the Wildcat
On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

Tim STRAUB Head Coach w 15th Season
Tim Straub is in his 15th season as head coach of the Davidson men’s golf team. The Wildcats, who officially joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in July 2014, capped their final season in the SoCon with a top-five showing at the conference championship and school-record 293.16 stroke average. Since his introduction as the new coach in April of 2000, Straub has placed his own unique mark on the Wildcat program, including a runner-up showing at the 2013 Conference Tournament, the team’s lowest finish in 40 years. In addition, Davidson finished 2013 with two team titles, six top-five finishes and nine Top-10s. Under Straub’s guidance, Richard Fountain ‘14 became the first Wildcat golfer to claim individual medalist honors at the 2011 Southern Conference Championship in 38 years, winning by one stroke. Along with qualifying for the NCAA Regional as a freshman, the three-time all-conference performer received an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2014. The 2011 SoCon win was Fountain’s second tournament victory of the year, as he won the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate in the fall. The then-freshman class of Fountain and Sam Echikson was strong throughout the 2011 season, ranking sixth amongst all Division I golf teams according to Golfstat’s “Freshman Class Impact Ranking.” Fountain and Echikson lived up to the expectations as both earned a spot on the 2013 All-Conference squad, while now-senior Todd Eckstein was named to the All-Tournament team. At the 2009 Southern Conference Golf Championships, Davidson had a pair of golfers receive honors from the conference, with senior Michael Saari being named to the All-SoCon Team, and Jackson Taylor earning All-Freshman Team honors. The ‘Cats had their best team finish in three years at the conference tournament. In 2012-13, Tim Straub guided the Wildcats to a pair of team titles and a second-place showing at the 2013 Southern Conference Championship.
3
Nine years ago, Straub led the Wildcats to a third place finish in the 2005 SoCon Championships, which Davidson hosted at River Run Country Club. Leading the competition after 36 holes, Davidson ended the event with a score of 890 and its highest finish in the event since the 1973 season. For his team’s accomplishment, Straub was honored as the Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in his five-year tenure. In 2003, Straub was also named Southern Conference Golf Coach of the Year after leading Davidson to its best finish (seventh) in the conference tournament since 1998. The ‘Cats improved their efforts in 2009, moving to sixth place at the league tournament. The abilities of current Wildcat golfers and the talent level of the newcomers have continued to elevate in each year Straub has been at the helm. Straub brings an extensive list of accomplishments and experience in the sport of golf. As a teenager, Straub won the 1983 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and earned the New York State Amateur Championship title twice. He was awarded the Arnold Palmer Golf Scholarship out of high school to attend Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., and to play on the nationally- ranked Demon Deacon squad. While at WFU, Straub and the talented squad received many accolades. He played on the 1986 NCAA National Championship team as well as the 1987 NCAA runner-up team. As a senior, Straub led the Demon Deacons to the ACC Championship title and was the ACC Individual Champion. In December of 1989, Straub earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and began the next milestone in his athletic career. He became a professional golfer and joined the Hooters Tour. His first two professional wins came at the Fayetteville Classic in 1995 and then again in 1998. Following his first tour experience, he decided to test his abilities against the best golfers in Asia, subsequently joining the PGA Asian Tour. He was successful in this next venture as he finished in the top 15 of the tour for two consecutive seasons. He placed second in the 1996 Philippines Open and third in the 1998 Hong Kong Open. During his time on the tour, Straub continued to compete in several American tournaments. He notched top-15 finishes at both the Nike Hershey Open and the 1998 Nike Greensboro Open. In 1998, Straub returned to the United States on a permanent basis and competed in a variety of tournaments. One of his crowning achievements as a professional came when he qualified for the 1998 U.S. Open in San Francisco. More recently, he placed second in the 2000 Buy.com Upstate Classic on the strength of a second-round 63. Straub also finished seventh at the 2001 Panama Open and 15th at the 2001 Buy.com Dayton Open. In addition to being a full-time coach and running his own junior golf camp, Straub has continued to advance his personal game. In the summer of 2004, Straub won the 80th Coastal Federal Bank Carolinas Open at the Surf Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina, and in 2003 he shot an even-par 71 to share medalist honors at a U.S. Open qualifier to advance to the sectional qualifying round. In May of 2006, Straub came up one stroke short of another
title at the 81st Coastal Federal Bank Carolinas Open at the Surf Golf & Beach Club. One month later he continued his summer run, capturing his second CPGA major championship by winning the 2005 North Carolina Open held at River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C. In the summer of 2009, Straub added to his long list of playing accomplishments as he finished second in the 43rd Annual North Carolina Open. His final score of four-under 209 (68-73-68) placed him in a tie for first among professional golfers. Along with his impressive showing at the North Carolina Open, Straub just missed his second U.S. Open as he advanced to the sectional qualifier. This past summer, Straub continued to add to his already successful playing resume as he captured the Carolinas PGA Section Johnny Palmer Trophy, which is awarded annually to the player who posts the lowest nine-round stroke average in the Carolinas PGA Major Tournaments. On the course, he teamed with Wake Forest coach Jerry Haas to capture the 2013 AHEAD / E-Z-GO CPGA Pro-Pro Championship at Pinehurst Country Club. Because of his professional and teaching experience, Straub has a wealth of knowledge to share with his Wildcat players. “I don’t see any reason why we can’t compete for the conference championship year after year,” he said. Straub is married to Jennifer Straub, the director of the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams at Davidson. The couple has a son, William, 17, and a daughter, Sydnee, 13.

River Run Country Club Located in beautiful Davidson, N.C., River Run Country Club is often noted for its championship golf course, recognized by Golf Reporter as one of the finest in the Southeast. Designed to complement its’ natural setting, River Run weaves through a landscape of lakes, rolling hills, the Rocky River and centuries-old forests. Additionally, the course underwent a complete renovation in 2007, including rebuilding all of the greens and laser leveling all tee boxes. The renovation of the driving range and practice facility was completed in the spring of 2006. Now with one of the best practice areas in the Carolinas, the new practice green measures roughly 7,000 sq. ft., as compared to the previous green, which encompassed just over 3,000 sq. ft. With the expansion of the range area, golfers can now hit off of natural turf all year long. River Run’s majestic Jeffersonian clubhouse is as elegant as it is relaxing. Members can enjoy the chef ’s culinary skills in the Rotunda Dining Room or relax with friends in the Wildcat Lounge. River Run has hosted some of the highest quality tournaments in the Southeast, including the 1994 & 2002 North Carolina Open, The Carolina PGA Club Pro Championship in 1997, 1998, and 2000, as well as the U.S. Amateur Qualifying tournament in 2003. In addition, River Run has been the site of the Chaquita Classic, a Web.com Tour Finals event, the last two summers.

The Club at Irish Creek The centerpiece of The Club at Irish Creek is a stunning 18-hole Davis Love III Signature Golf Course. Set into dramatic, rolling terrain that encircles a pristine 400-acre lake, Love’s design takes full advantage of the mature forest, the natural contours, and the ever-present lakefront, which is visible from 16 of the 18 holes. Beyond the breathtaking views, this masterful design pays homage to a past where walking was part of the game. Love’s goal was to create a course that members want to play repeatedly - a layout that challenges skilled players to think their way from tee to green, but also “is a course that my mom would enjoy,” with few forced carries, wide fairways, and ample greens to accommodate recreational players and juniors just learning the game. The front nine is a core layout, with no internal housing and only a handful of homesites on the perimeter of the property. The back nine is more expansive yet is no less walkable, thanks to tees placed just steps from the preceding greens, while dense buffers of mature hardwoods preserve the integrity of the golf. In a rare exception to modern development practices, the course routing was clearly given priority. Complementing the course is one of golf ’s most picturesque practice facilities. Within the lakefront range, Love created an internal six-hole par-3 routing, perfect for instruction, scheduled junior play, or special events such as member-guest competitions. An expansive two-tier practice green provides plenty of room and variety for putting and chipping.

2014-15 Davidson Men’s Golf
Jim MURPHY Director of Athletics
Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. An Atlanta native, Murphy played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. Davidson claimed the Southern Conference Graduation Rate Award for the last 12 years. In addition, Davidson won the SoCon’s Barrett-Bonner Award, given to the school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league’s academic honor roll, 19 times in the award’s 21-year history. Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The construction of the Belk Turf Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and practice facility and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating, all have come during Murphy’s tenure. Davidson also replaced Richardson Stadium’s natural grass with FieldTurf, which allows the Wildcats to practice in their home stadium on a daily basis and frees up field space for intramural use. In October, construction to the new Harry L. Vance Athletic Center - an enhancement to Baker Sports Complex - began, with an expected completion in approximately 12-14 months. In May of 2013, Murphy and Davidson College President Carol Quillen announced that the Wildcats will join the highly-competitive Atlantic 10 Conference, a move that became a reality on July 1, 2014. The 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, Murphy served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Carol QUILLEN
Davidson College President
Carol Quillen became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. A respected scholar and an accomplished administrator, Quillen came to Davidson from Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she served most recently as vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives. Quillen grew up in New Castle, Delaware, a small town where she says “it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people.” A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from pre-kindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. Since taking office, Quillen has engaged the Davidson community in reimagining the liberal arts experience within the changing landscape of higher education and an increasingly interconnected world. Her emphasis on “Transition to Impact” initiatives - a budding entrepreneurship program, community-based learning, and student/faculty collaborative research among others - empowers students to develop compassion, analytic rigor, creativity, resilience, and moral courage, and enables graduates to lead in the service of something larger than themselves. In the fall of 2012, Quillen announced a transformational gift from The Duke Endowment: $45 million to support the development of an Academic Neighborhood, a project that is intended to reimagine the possibilities of an interdisciplinary liberal arts education in the 21st century. Ensuring educational excellence and access for all talented students regardless of their financial circumstances is a top priority for the Davidson community, and Quillen is a passionate advocate for this commitment. To be meaningful, she asserts, equal opportunity must be real. Through The Davidson Trust, the college practices need-blind admission and meets 100 percent of demonstrated need of accepted students through a combination of grants and campus employment, with no loans. Quillen joined Rice as a member of the history faculty in 1990. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of the university’s Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center’s new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice’s vice provost for academic affairs and then as vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, focusing particularly on faculty diversity and faculty development, resource development, and initiatives that cross academic disciplines and institutions. Quillen has published two books on Petrarch, as well as scholarly articles, reviews, and papers. She received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice, and also has received grants and fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Whiting Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, and the Harvard University Center for Renaissance Studies, among others. Quillen was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. She also is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools and the Board of Directors of the Levine Museum of the New South. Quillen’s daughter, Caitlin, is a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
