SEASON OUTLOOK "”We are extremely excited about the upcoming 2013-14 season. We had tremendous success last year as a program and plan on building on that with a talented group of upperclassmen and an incoming group of freshmen who will make immediate impacts in our lineup," said head coach Bob Patnesky. "The entire team is feeding off the personal success of Anthony Elias's NCAA bid last year, and they are all looking to give themselves the opportunity to compete on college wrestling's biggest stage this year in Oklahoma City. We can't wait to see what opportunities our wrestlers are presented with in return for the hard work that they have put in since the season ended last year." 125 POUNDS Philip Elias returns after missing the ﬁnal six weeks of the 2012-13 season with an injury. Elias started strong, going 11-6 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon before his year ended, and he will look to pick up where he left off. Joining Elias at 125-pounds will be freshman Jordan Wang. Wang claimed top-10 PAISWT/PAISAA for four consecutive years, recording a 25-15 mark as a senior at Chestnut Hill Academy (Pa.) in 2012-13. 133 POUNDS Defending SoCon champion Anthony Elias will lead the way at 133-pounds, looking to make his way back to the NCAA Tournament in 2014. Elias went 11-10 overall before knocking off three straight opponents in the SoCon Tournament to win the title and earn a trip to the national tournament. After falling in backto-back matches in Iowa, he looks to improve upon lasts season's success.

at 138-pounds in high school and finished in the top five of the Maryland state championships three times. Palinski is a two-time all-conference and All-North Carolina honoree who posted a 60-18 career mark at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Cary, N.C. 149 POUNDS Kevin Birmingham returns for his junior season at 149-pounds. Birmingham was 11-13 last season with a team-high six pins on the year. He posted a 3-4 SoCon record in his first full season at 149-pounds, as he moved up from 141 midway through his rookie campaign.

157 POUNDS Senior CT Talevi will duke it out with freshman Nick Pappayliou for the starting spot at 157-pounds. Talevi saw limited action last year at both 157 and 174pounds, while Pappayliou was the District 22 (N.J.) champion and three-year letterwinner at Long Branch (N.J.) High School. Junior Dan Hagemann will also be in the mix in the second half of the season after spending the fall semester abroad. Hagemann saw action in a pair of contests last season and looks to return to ﬁghting form upon his return. 165 POUNDS With the graduation of Chris Cirenza, Patrick Devlin moves up from 157pounds to take the starting spot at 165 in his sophomore campaign. As a freshman in 2012-13, Devlin competed at 157 pounds on four occasions, and picked up his ﬁrst collegiate win at 149-pounds at the Wolfpack Open. The Wildcats could also get depth in this category from Talevi, Pappayliou or Hagemann, depending on lineup at 157pounds.

141 POUNDS The Wildcats will debut a pair of new faces at 141-pounds, as freshmen James McCord and Alex Palinski will battle for the spot in the lineup. McCord wrestled

wrestler with previous experience in this division, going 8-4 last season. He also picked up a win at 184-pounds. Powers wrestled at both 157- and 165-pounds last season, and will move up to 174 this season. He went 2-3 in SoCon action in 2012-13 and recorded three overall wins, including a pair of pins. The lone newcomer in this division, Sawyer wrestled at 170 at the Durham School for the Arts. He is a four-time allconference honoree who placed in the top-5 at the state meet last season. 184 POUNDS Scott Patrick was recently named to the Preseason All-SoCon team for 184pounds, following a stellar performance at last season's SoCon Tournament. After dropping his first-round match up, he stormed back to win three straight on his way to a third place finish. He concluded his season with a 19-10 overall record with five pins. Sawyer could also move up to this class to provide depth.

197-POUNDS Michael Moore will get the start at 197-pounds to make his collegiate debut. Moore posted 27 pins as a senior at Heritage High School in Ringgold, Ga., on his way to a team-best record of 44-8. He was previously the regional and state runner-up at both 182- and 195-pounds and will look for a smooth transition into collegiate action. HEAVYWEIGHT Ed Isola returns as the Wildcats' lone heavyweight for the 2013-14 season. Isola posted a 5-10 record as a sophomore last season, pinning a pair of opponents in the process.

174 POUNDS Veterans Nathaniel Powers and Ian Solcz will battle for the starting spot at 174-pounds, with Josh Sawyer also ﬁguring into the competition. Solcz is the lone

BOB PATNESKY Head Coach | 10th Season West Virginia 0-1 Record: 49-109-1

Bob Patnesky is in his tenth season in 2013-14 as Davidson College’s head wrestling coach and ranks third in all-time victories at the school. Davidson finished the 2012-13 season on a high note, as then-sophomore Anthony Elias pulled off a number of upsets at the 2013 SoCon Tournament to claim the SoCon Championship at 133 pounds, earning a bid to the NCAA National Tournament in Iowa. In addition, the Wildcats ended a 22-match SoCon losing streak in February with a 2524 win over SIUE. The 2011-12 season was highlighted by Anthony Elias' selection to the SoCon AllFreshman team, and Wildcat wrestlers continued to see success at the Southern Conference Championships in 2011, as twin-brothers Alex and Vitaly Radsky both earned places on the podium in their respective classes. In 2010, Patnesky returned Davidson to the NCAA Wrestling Championships for the first time since 1999 after guiding Alex Radsky to the Southern Conference Championship at 133 pounds. Radsky was the first Wildcat to claim the top spot on the conference podium in 41 years. Vitaly, finished as the SoCon runner-up at 141 pounds. Davidson has consistently been one of the top wrestling programs in the country for academics under Patnesky’s tutelage. The Wildcats were ranked in the NWCA’s Division I All-Academic Top 30 for five consecutive years (2006-10), earning the fifth-best team grade point average in 2009 and 2010, and also ranking 12th in 2012. In 2010, Alex Radsky earned a place on the NWCA All-Academic team and Ben Altman was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA All-District team. In the 2008-09 season, a pair of Wildcat wrestlers finished third at the Southern Conference Championships. David DeCamp and Tyler Mullen were both named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team following their impressive rookie campaigns, and the 'Cats boasted two SoCon Wrestler of the

Week honorees, with Sam O'Hair and Vitaly Radsky both bringing home the award, making Davidson one of just four schools in the conference with multiple weekly award winners. Three Wildcats finished third or higher at the 2008 SoCon Championships with Ben Altman placing second at 125 pounds. Altman was named to the NWCA All-Academic team, and Davidson finished 11th in the country in the team GPA rankings for the second straight season. It’s the third consecutive season the ‘Cats have been ranked in the top-25. Five Wildcats placed third at the Southern Conference Championships in 2007, and the team scored the second-most points in school history at the event. Altman was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Davidson topped Duke for the first time in 40 years and placed 11th in NWCA team GPA rankings. As the interim head coach in 2004-05, Patnesky led the Wildcats to an 8-7 overall

record, their first winning campaign since Davidson recorded an identical mark in the 1983-84 season. He came to Davidson College as an assistant coach prior to the 2003-04 season after serving in the same capacity at Ohio University for two years while earning his master's degree in recreation and sport sciences. There he coached four-time AllAmerican Jake Percival. “It is truly an honor to work and coach at an institution like Davidson College,” said Patnesky. “The academic prestige is what really attracts student-athletes to the school.” A High School National finalist, Patnesky was a three-year starter at West Virginia, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2001. The three-time NCAA qualifier is the all-time winningest wrestler in his weight class at West Virginia. Patnesky was the 2000 Eastern Wrestling League champion, helping his team win the EWL crown and a sixth-place finish in the country. He was a three-time Jr. National All-American, a national finalist, individually ranked among the top 12 wrestlers in the country for three years and finished his college career with more than 100 victories. He also competed for the U.S. on a tour of France and Poland in 1999 and earned NWCA Academic All-American accolades. Before serving as an assistant coach at Ohio University, Patnesky served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater for a season. There, his primary duties included recruiting, coaching, scheduling and scouting opponents. Patnesky is single and lives in Charlotte with his dog, Bella.

ERIK WINCE Assistant Coach | 5th Season Gardner-Webb ‘04

Erik Wince re-joined the Wildcats in the summer of 2012 and is in his fifth overall season with the Wildcats in 2013-14. Following Wince’s return, the ‘Cats snapped a 22-match SoCon losing streak on Feb. 2 when they edged SIUE 25-24. Later that season, then-sophomore Anthony Elias battled from the seven seed to earn the 2013 SoCon Championship at 133 pounds. Wince, along with head coach Bob Patnesky, accompanied Elias to the 2013 NCAA Championships in Iowa. Prior to his return to Davidson, Wince spend five seasons as the head wrestling coach and strength & conditioning coach at Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, N.C. He was thrice named the Piedmont Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (PACIS) Wrestling Coach of the Year, guiding the Furies to a pair of NC Independent School Athletic Association state titles and one state runner-up finish. In three seasons, his wrestlers made 19 appearances in the stat finals. Wince also boasts the honor of coaching a three-time Prep National AllAmerican and a two-time Prep National All-American. Wince, who was elected the USA Wrestling State Chairman for North Carolina in 2011-12 and has previously served on the National Prep Wrestling Advisory Board, has served as the national team head coach for the Junior National Duals (2006), Cadet Nationals (2007) and Junior Nationals (2008-10). Prior to his initial stint at Davidson, Wince taught physical education and health at Hickory High School and was the head coach for both wrestling and cross country. A 2004 graduate of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., Wince was a standout for the Runnin’ Bulldogs with more than 80 collegiate wins. He finished his senior campaign ranked among the national leaders with a 27-5 mark after qualifying for he NCAA Championships in 2003. Wince is a certified USA Wrestling Bronze Level National Team Coach and USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach Level 1. In the summer of 2013, Wince married the former Hannah Wagner. The couple resides in Mooresville, N.C.

TIM STROUD Assistant Coach | 13th Season Furman â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;78

Stroud is in his 13th season as an assistant coach with Davidson College wrestling. Helping primarily with the conditioning of the Wildcat wrestlers, Stroud is a local wrestling product who began competing in high school at North Mecklenburg. He graduated from Furman University in 1978 where he was a four-year starter and a team captain during his final campaign. Prior to coming to Davidson, Stroud served 20 years in the Army as a Field Artillery Officer and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1998. He now serves as the Assistant Director for Operations at the Knobloch Campus Center at Davidson.

HALL OF FAME WRESTLING IN THE DAVIDSON ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Charles W. Parker '38 Several areas in the Baker Sports Complex on the Davidson Campus are testimony to the impact Charlie Parker had on wrestling at Davidson College. The Charles W. Parker Wrestling Room and the Wildcats' dressing room were both given in his honor by former Davidson wrestlers. Except for a five-year break with the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II, Parker spent four decades as the Wildcats' wrestling coach. One of the highlights of his career was in 1963 when he coached the U.S. wrestling team in the Pan-American games in Brazil. He served in several national amateur wrestling associations, including the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee (1959-1960) and the National AAU Committee. Parker edited the NCAA Wrestling Guide and was secretary-treasurer of the Carolina Wrestling Officials Association. He was a certified international wrestling official and a charter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Parker was inducted into Davidsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall of Fame in 1991-92

Lowell L. Bryan '68 Inducted in the HOF Class of 1994-95, Bryan was a Southern Conference wrestling champion for Davidson in 1967. He also played football and baseball for the Wildcats. In 1991 he received the James P. Hendrix Award, which is presented to the Davidson football letterman who by use of the lessons learned on the playing field has gone on to achieve outstanding success in his chosen profession. Bryan is a partner with McKinsey and Co., a New York financial consulting firm which advises top managers of companies on strategy and the impact of economic and credit changes in their industry.

Harold A. Westervelt '59 Inducted in 1997-98, Harold A. Westervelt is the only wrestler in Davidson history to win three consecutive Southern Conference championships. In 1957 and 1958, he won the conference title at 157 pounds. In 1959, Westervelt moved up to the 177 pound class and won again. In 2006, he was named to the Southern Conference's 75th Anniversary team - the only Davidson wrestler selected for that honor. Westervelt was also a three year letterman in football for the Wildcats from 1956 through 1958, the last time Davidson posted three consecutive winning seasons.

Kerry Keith '69 Keith was a two-sport standout, as a fullback on the football team and a star on the wrestling squad. Twice he led the Wildcats in rushing, first with 719 yards on 155 carries (4.6 avg.) in 1967, then with 377 yards on 121 carries in 1968. He also scored nine touchdowns as a sophomore, tying the school record at the time. He finished his career with 1,378 yards rushing (14th all-time) on 353 attempts as well as 16 touchdowns, plus 19 receptions for 225 yards. On the mats, Keith advanced to the national tournament in 1968, earning Davidsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first-ever points at the national meet with a first-round victory. He was the Southern Conference champion at 191 pounds as a senior, one of only six individuals ever to win a SoCon title.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION CAROL QUILLEN PRESIDENT

JIM MURPHY DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 200204, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from prekindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

Sports Information Ashley Bailey is in her second season as an assistant sports information director at Davidson. She serves as the primary contact for field hockey, volleyball, swimming & diving, women’s cross country, wrestling and women’s track & field. Bailey came to Davidson after spending two years at Charleston Southern University in North Charleston, S.C., where she served as the interim sports information director from August, 2011 to June, 2012. In that role, she oversaw publicity efforts for the Buccaneers’ 14 Division I athletics programs, acting as primary contact for the football, women’s basketball, baseball, golf and track & field programs. She had previously served as an assistant director of athletic communications at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. A native of South Dartmouth, Mass., Bailey earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Journalism from Ohio University in 2008 and a Master’s of Business Adiminstration from Saint Francis in 2010. She resides in Cornelius.
