Coaching Staff JOHN YOUNG Head Coach Eighth Season | Williams ‘97

The 2013 CCSA Men’s Coach of the Year, John Young’s Wildcat teams have found much success in his seven years at the helm of the swimming & diving programs. During his tenure, the Wildcats have experienced tremendous success, highlighted by Lindsay Martin ‘11 and Drew Onken ’12 becoming the first Davidson swimmers to compete at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships in 2010 and 2012, and four team Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) championships — three for the men (2010, 2011 and 2013) and one for the women (2008). The Wildcat men took home their third CCSA Championship in 2013, with Onken earning Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and Men’s Swimmer of the Year honors for the third consecutive season after taking home a trio of individual titles as well as swimming on three champion relays. Most impressively, Onken took home gold in the 400 IM, finishing his career undefeated at the championship meet in that event. He would also win Davidson’s prestigious Tommy Peters Award as the top senior male athlete. In addition to Onken, Dylan Ludwick claimed a pair of CCSA titles while Will Fox earned one as well. The Wildcats also picked up a trio of relay titles as the 400-yard medley relay, 800-medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay all took home top honors. The women’s squad posted 20 performances that ended up on the all-time top-10 lists, including a program record in the 200-yard butterfly by Meredith Nakano and a tie of the program record in the 800-yard free relay. In 2012, Onken qualified for three events at the NCAA Championships as a junior, also earning the CCSA’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and Men’s Swimmer of the Year honors after helping the Wildcat men to a runner-up finish at the CCSA Championships. Also collecting hardware was Dylan Ludwick, who earned Most Outstanding Freshman accolades for his success in the distance events. Following the conclusion of the season, Onken was named a Mid-Major All-American by Collegswimming.com, while teammates Geoff Peitz and Curtis Chaney earned honorable mention honors. In addition to their outstanding work in the pool, the Wildcats also excelled in the classroom as well. Both

the men’s and women’s squads were honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America, while Onken and Peitz earned All-American honors from the association. In addition, Peitz earned Academic All-District honors. Young led the Wildcat men's swimming and diving team to its first ever conference championship in 2010, and they repeated as CCSA champions the following season. He was named CCSA Men's Swimming Coach of the Year after both championships. During his tenure, the Wildcat men have completely rewritten the record book, with only three diving records remaining from the previous era. Overseeing the teams’ move to the CCSA to begin the 2007-08 season, Young led the women’s team to the inaugural championship. He was named CCSA Women's Coach of the Year and coached 14 athletes to All-CCSA performances, including five individual event winners. Under Young's leadership, the Wildcat women have also rewritten the record book, with all but five event records set by his athletes. The 2011 season brought great success to the Wildcat swimming and diving program, including a second straight CCSA championship for the men, who finished the season ranked 24th in the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Poll. With three individual titles and three relay titles, Peitz was named 2011 CCSA Swimmer of the Meet at the league championships, while Drew shared CCSA Swimmer of the Year behind four CCSA Swimmer of the Week honors. Peitz was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for his success in the classroom. After becoming the first swimmer in Davidson history to compete at the NCAA Championships in 2010, Martin -who was also named CCSA Swimmer of the Year and Meet at the 2011 league championships, made her second straight appearance the following season and was named to the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America Tea for a second straight season. Teammates Emily Castle, Curtis Chaney and Peitz earned Honorable Mention.

XXXX In 2010, Young led the Wildcat men to their first league championship, earning CCSA Coach of the Year honors. Ben Lane earned Most Outstanding Male Diver for a second straight season, while Martin was named Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer after sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. Martin, who set a pair of school records at the 2010 NCAA Championships, was named to the 2010 Mid-Major All-America Team by collegeswimming.com, while 2010 CCSA Most Promising Freshman Onken earned Honorable Mention honors for winning the 400 IM with an NCAA B-cut time at the league championships. The teams continue to experience success in the new league, as both finished second at the 2009 CCSA Championships and took home several individual honors. Ben Lane was named Most Outstanding Male Diver after winning both the 1 and 3-meter events, and Curtis Chaney was named Most Outstanding Freshman Male Performer for being a three-time individual champion. In his first two seasons with the Wildcats, Young coached 10 All-CAA performers. The Wildcats also continue to excel in the classroom, with the teams consistently honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America for academic excellence. Martin, Anna Stringfield '11 and Jean DeOrnellas '13 have all been named Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans as well. Prior to joining the Davidson staff, Young spent three years as an assistant swimming coach at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, helping to guide the Lords and Ladies to four NCAA Division III team championships. “John has a keen understanding of a highly competitive academic and athletic environment,” Director of Athletics Jim Murphy said. “His background and experience make him a great fit for Davidson.” During his tenure at Kenyon, Young coached national champions in 23 individual and 20 relay events, including Division III record-setters in four individual and two relay events, and two Olympians. Young was also responsible for the team’s strength and power program as well as recruiting. A 1997 graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., Young collected four NCAA Division III national championships as a student-athlete and was named NECAC Division III Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. The team captain and two-time Division III New England Conference Swimmer of the Year also earned All-America honors 16 times and Honorable Mention All-America recognition 10 times. Young’s impressive collegiate career also included seven NEC event records, eight Williams College records and 22 NEC titles.

Before becoming a coach, Young worked as a consultant with a market research firm in Quincy, Mass., where he interacted with clients, managed the firm’s technology infrastructure, and hired and trained new analysts, giving him a skill set unique among many coaches. Young has also served as a coach at Total Performance Elite Training Camps in New York, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as the Technique Swimming Camp at Harvard University. He is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association and the College Swim Coaches Association of America.

2012 STATiSTiCS AARON HINTZ Diving Coach Eighth Season | Western Illinois ‘05

Aaron Hintz, a two-time CCSA Diving Coach of the Year, enters his seventh season in charge of the Wildcat’s diving program at the start the 2013-14 season. With more than 18 years of coaching experience, Hintz has worked with athletes at every level from novice to nationals and NCAA Division I, and the Wildcats benefit from his wealth of knowledge and experience. Both Kaliya Burton-Akright and Karen Monuszko broke the program record in the 3-meter and qualified for the NCAA Zone meet in 2013. The duo also finished in the top-10 at both the 2012 and 2013 CCSA Championships, with Burton-Akright claiming top five finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Hintz earned CCSA co-Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2010 after coaching Ben Lane to Most Outstanding Diver honors in back to back seasons. Lane won both the 1 and 3-meter events at the 2009 CCSA championships. That season, he also coached Lane to a 26th-place finish at the NCAA Zone B Championships and a new school record on the 3-meter. The following season, he repeated as CCSA Most Outstanding Diver, once again sweeping the diving events at the conference championship. He competed at the NCAA Zone B Championships for a second straight season, finishing 28th on the 3-meter and 25th on the 1-meter board. In 2011, he coached Kaliya Burton-Akright to the CCSA championship on the 3-meter board at the league championships. “Aaron’s vision for Davidson Diving is perfectly consistent with my belief that Davidson can sustain a highachieving swimming and diving program built around the excellence of outstanding athlete-scholars,” Young said. “Able to offer Davidson’s prestigious academics and the chance to dive in one of the country’s premier facilities, I trust that Aaron will recruit the country’s best and brightest divers. Even more importantly, I know he is a coach with whom those divers will improve when they arrive.”

“Team Orlando” Diving in Orlando, Fla. His coaching career also includes head diving coach at Western Illinois University (2003-06), head coach for Noblesville Dive Club in Noblesville, Ind. (1998-2003), assistant diving coach at Ball State University (1997-98), assistant coach for the Tualatin Hills Dive Club in Beaverton, Ore. (1994-97), diving coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (1990-92) and diving instructor for the Cedar Rapids Park and Recreation District (1990). Along the way, Hintz has coached four Diver of the Years and various university record holders. He has coached a diver to Division III NCAAs and two to the Division I NCAA Zones. At the Junior Olympic level, Hintz has coached a World Team Trial qualifier and three divers in the top-10 at multiple national meets. In a five-year stint as a Junior Olympic coach, he qualified divers to a national level meet more than 20 times. Hintz received a B.A. in journalism from Western Illinois in 2005, with a minor in creative writing and English. In addition to his coaching experience, Hintz has extensive experience working in the world of professional journalism, serving as a webmaster for Parkview Homes in Tampa, Fla., as well as a senior writer for the Macomb Eagle, editor in chief for Macomb Seen and a reporter for the Macomb Journal in Macomb, Ill. This experience aided in his development as a communicator, team builder and leader. Among his accomplishments, Hintz won the Illinois Press Association’s Maurice Scott award for the best coverage of taxation and placed in the top three in three other categories. Hintz also attended Field Medical Service School to become eligible to deploy with Marines and attained the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer, HM3. He served as a medical corpsmen with the U.S. Marines from 19881994.

ALL-TIME RECORDS AMY KRAKAUER Assistant Coach Fourth Season | Columbia ‘08

Amy Krakauer begins her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Davidson swimming & diving team in the 2013-14 season. Krakauer’s previous experience, both as a collegiate swimmer herself at Columbia and as an assistant coach at Colgate, helped the Wildcats tremendously throughout her previous three seasons. In 2012-13, then-sophomore Meredith Nakano set a new program record in the 200-yard butterfly as one of 20 performances by the Wildcat women that ended up on the program’s all-time top-10 list. Led by Drew Onken, who set a new program record in the 100-yard breaststroke, the men’s squad posted 29 all-time top-10 performances in the 2012-13 on their way to the 2013 CCSA Championship. Krakauer assisted in Onken’s development as he earned three consecutive CCSA Swimmer of the Year honors. In 2011-12, Krakauer aided Onken in qualifying for a trio of events at the NCAA Championship as well as the 2012 U.S. Olympic team trials, where he swam alongside teammate Geoff Peitz. Dylan Ludwick earned CCSA Freshman Swimmer of the Year accolades, while both the men’s and women’s team were honored as CSCAA All-Academic teams. During her first season with the Wildcats, Krakauer helped coach Davidson to a 2011 CCSA men's championship and 14 individual and seven relay records at the league championships. “Amy's experiences, both as a student-athlete and as a professional, make her a unique and impressive fit for our program," head coach John Young said. In her two seasons with the Raiders, the middle distance team achieved 231 personal best times, 27 school records, 22 Patriot League records, 15 NCAA B-cut times and the women’s team won the 2009 Patriot League Championship. Krakauer also coached Emily Murphy, who became Colgate’s first female NCAA championship competitor, in the 200 IM and the 100 and 200

breaststrokes. “Coach Krakauer is familiar with the perspective necessary to be successful in a rigorous academic setting,” Young said. “As our student-athletes aspire to evergreater successes, I am confident that Amy will be a tremendous resource and mentor.” Krakauer’s coaching experience also includes stints at Nike Swimming Camps in 2006 and 2007 and as the head coach of the Columbia Masters Swimming program from 2005-08, while she was also a four-year member of the Columbia women’s swimming and diving team. Krakauer was a four-year letter winner for the Columbia Lions, earning First-Team All-Ivy honors in 2008, as a member of the winning 200 medley relay and runner-up 400 medley relay, and the runner-up in the 100 breast with an NCAA B-cut time at the Ivy League championships. She also earned Academic All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2008 and Academic All-Ivy honors in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The former team captain was also an NCAA Sportsmanship Award Ivy League nominee in 2006 and the Coaches Award winner in both 2005 and 2006. Krakauer earned her B.A. in Economics and German from Columbia in May of 2008, where she was an eightsemester honoree on the Dean’s List. She is a native of Colorado Springs, Colo. She won her age group at the Ironman Lousiville 2010 to earn a qualifying slot in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, where she finished ninth in her age group. She also was the top overall female finisher at the USA Triathlon Aquathlon National Championship in May of 2011. In the fall of 2012, she again successfully competed in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

COACHING STAFF JOSH GRAHAM Assistant Coach Second Season | Penn State ‘09

Josh Graham joined the staff of the Davidson swimming & diving programs in the summer of 2012 and immediately made an impact for the Wildcats. In his first season assisted with the development of the team, Graham saw the men’s squad win the 2013 CCSA Championship, headlined by CCSA Male Swimmer of the Year Drew Onken. Dylan Ludwick and Will Fox took home titles in addition to Onken, as did a trio of Davidson relays. On the women’s side, Meredith Nakano set a new program mark as the squad posted 20 swims that made it to Davidson’s all-time top-10 list. The team swam to a seventh place finish at the CCSA meet, with numerous impressive performances. Prior to coming to Davidson, Graham served as the lead senior coach at South Eastern Virginia Aquatics (SEVA) in Newport News, Va. At SEVA, Graham worked primarily with swimmers transitioning to the Senior Level. In 2013, his 13 & 14 boys’ squad broke Virginia’s 20-yearold state records in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays for both long and short course. The relays ranked among the top-8 in the nation and earned Graham a position as a Zone Select Team coach with Virginia Swimming. Graham earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminology in 2009 from Penn State, where he was a consistent contributor to the Nittany Lions’ success at the Big Ten Championship Meet at four years. He is a former Virginia state record holder in the 200-yard freestyle – a mark that was later broken by his good friend & teammate, American record holder David Walters. A certified ASCA level-3 coach, Graham hails from Newport News, Va., and started his swimming career at age five.

2012-13 iN REViEW gRAhAM JOiNS SWiMMiNg & DiViNg STAFF Davidson College head swimming coach John Young announced the addition of Josh Graham as the newest member of the Wildcats’ coaching staff on Friday. Graham comes to Davidson after serving as the Lead Senior Coach for South Eastern Virginia Aquatics (SEVA) in Newport News, Va. At SEVA, Josh worked primarily with swimmers transitioning to the Senior Level. In 2012, his 13 and 14 boys’ squad broke Virginia State’s 20-year-old records in the Long Course and Short Course 200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle relays. Those relays ranked among the nation’s top eight and earned Graham a position as a Zone Select Team Coach with Virginia Swimming. Under Graham’s direction, SEVA athletes saw great improvements, which he attributes to a greater understanding of the discipline and commitment that is necessary to achieve high level of swimming success. According to Graham, one of his best accomplishments was helping his athlete develop in incredible sense of respect for the sport. Graham earned a Bachelor’s degree in in criminology in 2009 from Penn State University, where he was a proud member of the varsity swimming team and contributed to Penn State’s success by scoring at the BigTen Championship during each of his four years. Graham is the former Virginia State record holder in the 200yard freestyle – a record that was broken by his former teammate and good friend American record holder David Walters. A certified ASCA level-3 coach, Graham grew up in Newport News, Va., and started his swimming career at age five. Coach Graham will take a lead role in recruiting for the men’s team and will be involved in the preparation of every swimmer as Davidson’s men and women prepare for the CCSA Championship in February.

ONKEN gARNERS CCSA ACCOlADES Just one week into the 2012-13 season, Davidson swimmer Drew Onken has picked up where he left off last season by earning the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association’s Men’s Swimmer of the Week honor for the week of Oct. 11, as announced by the conference on Thursday.

ONKEN EARNS SECOND STRAighT CCSA hONOR For the second consecutive week Davidson swimmer Drew Onken has been named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association’s Male Swimmer of the Week, announced the conference on Wednesday. Onken earned the honor for his performance in the Wildcats’ meet at East Carolina.

Onken had a solid effort in his season debut, picking up a win and three additional top-ten finishes in his individual events at the All-North Carolina Collegiate Invitational. The senior from Marietta, Ga., swam a 1:53.27 in the 200-yard individual medley to take the top spot before touching the pads third in the 400-IM with a time of 4:05.88. Onken went on to finish fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:07.67, and was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 58.46.

Onken picked up a win and two runner-up spots in Saturday’s loss to the Pirates. He took first in the 400-yard individual medley, touching the pads in 4:06.56. Onken then placed second in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. He clocked in at 59.12 in the 100-yard event before finishing with a time of 2:09.31 in the longer race. Onken joined teammates Ethan Levinson, Brandon Kegley and Will Fox to take third place in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:37.90

In addition to his individual successes, Onken was a member of three Wildcat relays. He helped the 200-yard freestyle relay take fifth at the event with a time of 1:25.78 and was also a member of the eighthplace 400-yard medley relay that swam a 3:31.23. To cap things off, Onken swam a leg on the ‘Cats’ 200yard medley relay team that took 12th after touching in 1:37.49.

This is the second straight CCSA Swimmer of the Week honor for Onken, who claimed the award three times last season. The defending two-time CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Year, he currently boasts the league’s top times in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard IM, as well as the 200-yard IM.

The Davidson swimming & diving teams claimed two of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association’s four weekly awards, as Kaliya Burton-Akright was named the CCSA Diver of the Week while Drew Onken received his third CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week acknowledgement as announced by the league on Wednesday. Burton-Akright won both diving events to help the Wildcat women to a 152-148 win over league rival College of Charleston. She scored a career best 269.17 points to win the 1-meter competition and recorded 259.73 points in the 3-meter competition.

Davidson swimmers Dylan Ludwick and Meredith Nakano have been named the CCSA’s Male and Female Swimmer of the Week, respectively, for their efforts in a pair of wins over league foe VMI this past weekend. The men’s team earned a 164-118 win while the women recorded a 15071 victory. Nakano won a pair of events vs. the Keydets, taking the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 1:57.70. She then went on to win the 200-yard butterfly, posting the Wildcats’ best time of the season at 2:08.67. Nakano also swam a 2:25.84 in the exhibition swim of the 200-yard breaststroke and helped the ‘Cats swim a 1:41.11 in an exhibition swim of the 200-yard freestyle relay. Ludwick won a trio of events in Saturday’s meet starting with a season-best 1:43.34 in the 200-yard freestyle. Davidson swimmer Drew Onken has claimed league honors once again, earning the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association’s Male Swimmer of the Week accolade for the week of December 5. Onken had a stellar performance at the Total Performance Swim Camps Invitational hosted by Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, coming away with a pair of wins in addition to a pair of runner-up finishes, three broken records and five relay swims. The senior from Marietta, Ga., posted wins in the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. His time of 3:53.01 in the IM was good for a pool and meet record and also met the “B” standard for the NCAA championships. He swam the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:01.48. Onken was the runner up in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.18. His preliminary mark of 56.09 broke the Wildcats’ program record in the event. He also took second place in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 1:51.63. In addition to his individual events, Onken was a member of five Wildcat relay teams. He swam a leg on the fourth-place 400-yard free relay team, as well as the Wildcats’ “A” relay that swam to a fifth place finish. Onken also joined his teammates as part of the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. The week of Dec. 5 marks the fourth time Onken has earned the award and the seventh time a Davidson swimmer or diver has been honored. Onken previously earned the accolade on Oct. 11, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31. His teammates Kaliyah Burton-Akright (Oct. 31), Dylan Ludwick (Nov. 14) and Meredith Nakano (Nov. 14) have also been acknowledged by the CCSA this season.

For the third consecutive week, Onken claims the league honors with three individual first-place finishes as well as a relay win in leading the Wildcat men past the CofC Cougars 163.5-130.5. Davidson swimmer Dylan Ludwick garnered his second CCSA accolade of the season this week, earning Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors for meets held Jan. 21-27, as announced by the league Thursday. Ludwick led the Wildcats in a close effort at CCSA foe GardnerWebb, picking up three wins in the squad’s 107-98 loss to the Runnin’ Bulldogs. He won the 1000-yard freestyle to start things off, clocking in at a season-best 9:42.05. Ludwick then set a new GWU pool record of 4:38.71 with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle. For the fifth time this season, Davidson swimmer Drew Onken has been named the CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week for meets held Jan. 28Feb. 3 as announced by the league Wednesday. The senior from Marietta, Ga., claimed a pair of individual wins in Davidson’s 191-87 triumph over Howard as part of the CCSA Duals this past weekend. Onken won the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing more than three seconds ahead of his competitors. He later won the 200yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:07.64. In addition to his individual victories, he was a member of the Wildcats’ runner-up 200-yard medley relay that swam a 1:39.73 and a 400yard freestyle relay that posted the second-best time of the meet with a 3:17.80. Onken previously earned the honor Oct. 11, Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Dec. 5. Teammate Dylan Ludwick received the accolade last week, while Meredith Nakano (No. 14) and Kaliya Burton-Akright (Oct. 31) have also been honored this season.

The women's squad placed seventh overall at the meet. The Wildcat men accumulated 906.5 points for the win, defeating second-place College of Charleston (833.5) by more than 60 points. Gardner-Webb finished third (732) while VMI claimed fourth (280) and Howard rounded things out in fifth (262). The women's squad finished seventh with 262 points. Florida Gulf Coast claimed the women's title with 712 points, followed by Liberty (609) and Georgia Southern (482.5). Young was named the 2013 Men's Coach of the Year, marking the third time he has earned the acknowledgement. Onken earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for the second consecutive season after claiming three individual titles. He previously won the 200- and 400yard individual medley events before winning the 200-yard breaststroke on the final day of competition. Onken clocked in at 2:00.25 in defending his title in the event. Onken's win was part of a 12-3 sweep for the Wildcats in the 200-yard breaststroke. Spencer Gill was the runner up in the event, touching the pad in 2:04.14 to record the third-fastest time in program history. Grant Smith followed in 2:04.64 to take third, also joining the all-time top-10. Drew Gill claimed eighth place, also scoring for the Wildcats with a time of 2:08.61. The Wildcats claimed third and fourth in the 1650-yard free, with Dylan Ludwick and Max Schimanski finishing back-to-back. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America has honored the Davidson men's and women's swimming & diving teams as Scholar All-American programs for the semester of fall 2012 as announced by the organization last week. Programs that carry a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible for the accolade. The men's squad boasts a team GPA of 3.24, ranking 20th in the nation in Division I. Yale University leads the list with a team GPA of 3.57. North Texas sits atop the women's rankings with a 3.62, while the Wildcat women tallied a 3.28 this fall. Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) – the oldest organization of college coaches in America -is a professional organization of college swimming and diving coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming at the collegiate level. In cooperation with its sister organizations – USA Swimming, the American Swimming Coaches Association, United States Masters Swimming and the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association – the CSCAA is dedicated to promoting the benefits of the sport of swimming at all levels and throughout the life cycle. WRAP uP COMPETiTiON AT NCAA ZONE MEET Davidson divers Kaliya Burton-Akright and Karen Monuszko finished the 2012-13 season with the 1-meter diving preliminary competition at the NCAA B Zone meet at the University of Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon. Burton-Akright found herself in contention for the national meet through three rounds of dives, but could not hold on. She posted a score of 214.40 to take 31st place at the event. Burton-Akright picked up her best score of the day on her first dive, an inward one and a half somersault in the pike positions. She accrued 42.00 points from the judges on the dive, which had a 2.4-degree of difficulty. Monuszko took 38th place with 189.90 points in the competition. She received 35.56 points from the judges on her fourth dive of the day, a forward dive featuring two somersaults in the pike position.

Davidson senior Drew Onken has garnered one more honor to cap off his impressive career, earning the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association's 2013 Swimmer of the Year accolade. The award, which was voted upon by the league's coaches, was announced Tuesday. This season marks the third consecutive in which Onken has earned the honor, sharing it in 2011 before being named the sole honoree both this season and last. He was previously named the 2013 CCSA Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for helping his team to the 2013 CCSA Championship. A native or Marietta, Ga., Onken claimed top honors in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200-yard breaststroke and was a member of three champion relays. He holds conference records in all three of his individual events in addition to being a member of two record-holding relays. Onken's victory in the 400 IM this season was his fourth straight, making him undefeated in the event. For his efforts, Onken was a five-time CCSA Swimmer of the Week this season. He ended the season ranked in the top five in the CCSA in seven events. Other honorees included Men's Diver of the Year Peter Gibbons (CofC), Women's Swimmer of the Year Emma Svensson (FGCU) and Women's Diver of the Year Maegan Butler (FGCU).

Davidson College has announced its award winners for the 2012-13 athletic season, including the Tommy Peters Award (senior swimmer Drew Onken- a three-time CCSA Swimmer of the Year and school-record holder of four individual events) and the Rebecca A. Stimson Award (senior forward Sophia Aleksandravicius- a two-time SoCon Women's Basketball Player and Defender of the Year, and the program's all-time record holder in seven offensive and defensive categories), honoring the college's top male and female athletes. In recognition of their outstanding dedication and contribution to intercollegiate athletics, senior men's basketball and three-time SoCon All-Academic JP Kuhlman was presented with the Thomas D. Sparrow Award, while field hockey's Sarah Fisher, the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Year, received the Susan K. Roberts Award. Grant Smith was recognized with the Helen DeVane Carnegie Award, presented to Davidson's most outstanding freshman athlete.

Senior Jean DeOrnellas of the Davidson women's swimming team was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III Women's atlarge team by the College Sports Information Directors of America, as announced Friday. DeOrnellas advances to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors. A native of Fairfax, Va., DeOrnellas carried a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in Political Science. A multiple-time Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association AllAcademic Team member, the senior also was honored this year as one of four Wildcat student-athletes with the Northwestern Mutual Award for her achievements in the pool and the classroom as part of the Northwestern Mutual Student-Athlete Spotlight. DeOrnellas was a Scholar All-American Honorable Mention by the College Swim Coaches Association of America in 2011. She helped the Wildcats as a team earn Scholar All-American honors numerous times. In the pool, DeOrnellas was one of the top scorers on the women's team. She specialized in freestyle and butterfly events during her four-year career, appearing on the all-time top-10 performers lists in three individual events. She is also a school-record holder as a member of the 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays. This past season at the CCSA Championships, DeOrnellas swam a career-best time of 56.09 in the 100-yard butterfly. Then on the final day of competition, she earned a career-best time of 51.66 in the 100yard freestyle, moving her into fourth place all-time in the Davidson record books. Upon her graduation from Davidson, DeOrnellas will serve as an English teaching assistant in South Korea as a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright grant.

AWARDS & hONORS SWIMMER OF THE MEET Drew Onken, 2013 The 2013 season marked the second consecutive season he claimed the honor and the third straight time it was won by a Wildcat. The senior successfully defended his title in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-IM, and won the 400 IM for the fourth straight season He was also a part of three winning relays as he led the Wildcats to the 2013 CCSA Championship.

Drew Onken, 2012 In addition to earning CCSA Swimmer of the Year honors, Onken made it two in a row for the Wildcats by following in Geoffrey Peitz’s footsteps and earning the CCSA’s Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet honor for 2012. Onken came away from the championships with three league titles, winning the 200-yard IM, 400-yard IM and 200-yard breaststroke. He would qualify for the NCAA Championships in all three events as well, becoming the first ever male swimmer at Davidson to do so. In additon to his individual performances, Onken was a member of all four first-place relay teams. The ‘Cats took wins in the 800yard free relay and the 400-yard medley relay in meet-record fashion. Geoffrey Peitz, 2011 With his third individual championship of the meet, junior Geoffrey Peitz led the Davidson men’s swimming and diving team to their second straight CCSA Championship and was named 2011 CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Meet for his efforts. His dominant performance included three individual titles — the 200 IM (1:47.53), 100 back (48.02) and 200 back (1:45.67), all in school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times, while swimming on three winning relays — the 200 (1:21.21) and 400 (3:00.61) freestyle and the 400 medley (3:16.68) relays, also all school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times.

Lindsey Martin, 2010 & 11 Lindsey Martin was named Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 2010 CCSA Championships with three individual titles (50, 100 and 200 freestyles and CCSA records in both the 50 (22.57) and 100 (49.65). Martin won the 50 free with a new Davidson and CCSA-record, NCAA-B cut time of 22.57. She won her second individual title in another NCAA B-cut and school-record time of 1:49.02 in the 200 freestyle, and completed the sweep with a third NCAA B-cut time, in the 100 freestyle (49.65), also a school and league record. Martin also anchored the Wildcats’ winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays, as well as Davidson’s runner-up 200 and 400 medley relays. She was invited to the 2010 NCAA championships on the strength of her time in the 50 freestyle, become the Wildcats’ first-ever qualifier. In 2011, Martin repeated as CCSA Swimmer of the Meet, winning individual titles and setting league and school records in both the 50 (22.57) and 100 (49.41) freestyles. She rebroke the record in the 100 with a leadoff leg of 48.95 in the Wildcats’ winning 400 freestyle relay, and also anchored the Wildcats’ winning 200 freestyle relay. She swam three individual NCAA B-cut times — the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, and contributed to one NCAA B-cut relay time, the 400 free relay. Martin also earned CCSA Swimmer of the Year honors, after being named Swimmer of the Week four times, and represented the Wildcats once again at the NCAA Championships.

Megan Hollar, 2006 In the final meet of her illustrious Wildcat career, Megan Hollar won three individual titles — the 200 breast, 100 breast and 200 IM, at the 2006 CAAs to earn Swimmer of the Meet, and ultimately, CAA Female Swimmer of the Year honors. Hollar is the only swimmer in the program’s history to win an individual title at the CAA conference championship meet, finishing her career with four wins. Along the way, she set a new school record in both the 200 breast, with an NCAA-B standard time of 2:17.80, and the 100 breast, with a time of 1:03.30 to also become the first Wildcat to hold a CAA meet record. She is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 free. Hollar was named the 2005-06 CAA Female Swimmer of the Year, the first Davidson swimmer to receive the honor.

Mary Shell Brosche, 1999 & 2000 Mary Shell Brosche’s performances at the Southern States Champ-ionships in 1999 and 2000 earned her back-toback top swimmer honors and helped the Wildcat women to consecutive team titles. Brosche won the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back events in both years and was once the school record holder in both IMs. Extremely versatile, Brosche remains on two additional Wildcat Top-10 lists — the 100 back, the 200 back and the 100 fly.

Matthew Buck, 1995 As a freshman in 1995, Matthew Buck made a splash with three top individual finishes at his first Southern States Championships. Swimming to victories in the 200 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast, Buck led the Davidson men to their first-ever Southern States team crown. He was also part of the Wildcats’ winning 400 medley relay. A versatile and talented swimmer, Buck’s school record in the 100 breast is still intact, and he remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 breast and 200 IM.

Heather Sweeney, 1995 Heather Sweeney’s rookie campaign culminated with an impressive showing at the 1995 Southern States Championships, as she claimed a pair of individual titles. Out-swimming the pack, Sweeney touched the wall first in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, setting a new meet record in the 400. She also raced to second in the 200 breast and helped the 800 freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. Sweeney remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 and 400 IMs.

AWARDS & hONORS SWIMMER OF THE YEAR Drew Onken, 2013 Onken capped a brilliant career with his third consecutive Swimmer of the Year accolade. This season marks the third consecutive in which Onken has earned the honor, sharing it in 2011 before being named the sole honoree both this season and last. He was previously named the 2013 CCSA Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for helping his team to the 2013 CCSA Championship. A native or Marietta, Ga., Onken claimed top honors in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200yard breaststroke and was a member of three champion relays. He holds conference records in all three of his individual events in addition to being a member of two recordholding relays. Onken's victory in the 400 IM this season was his fourth straight, making him undefeated in the event. For his efforts, Onken was a five-time CCSA Swimmer of the Week this season. He ended the season ranked in the top five in the CCSA in seven events.

Drew Onken, 2011, 2012 During his sophomore season, Drew Onken was named CCSA co-Men’s Swimmer of the Year for winning four CCSA weekly honors. Onken was named CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week on October 6, November 17, December 8 and January 20. Onken once again claimed the honor in 2012 after another stellar season as a junior. At the CCSA Championship meet, Onken came away a three-time winner with firstplace finishes in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200yard breaststroke. In addition, he qualified for the NCAA National Championships in all three events, becoming the first male swimmer from Davidson to do so.

MOST OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN Dylan Ludwick 2012 After skipping the 2011 season, the Davidson swim team continued on with its trend of boasting the CCSA’s top freshman in 2012 with Dylan Ludwick. In his CCSA Championship debut, Ludwick won the 500-yard free and 1,650-yard free to help the Wildcats to a runner-up finish. He set the meet record in both events, and added another record as a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team.

Curtis Chaney, 2009 After winnng three individual titles and swimming on three winning relays, Curtis Chaney was named the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Most Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year. Chaney won the 100 free (45.78) and set new school records while winning both the 200 (1:37.72) and 500 freestyles (4:26.89). He also swam on the school-record setting and winning 400 (3:01.85) and 800 freestyle (6:43.92) relays and on the runner-up schoolrecord setting 400 medley relay (3:23.38).

Freshman Drew Onken was honored as the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Most Outstanding Male Freshman Performer, the second straight season a Wildcat has been so honored. Onken capped off his impressive rookie season by winning the 400 IM with a CCSArecord time of 3:51.93 and swam the breaststroke leg of the Wildcats’ CCSA record-setting 200 and 400 medley relays. He also finished second in the 200 IM with a school-record time of 1:49.56. and setting Davidson standards in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.

AWARDS & hONORS MOST OuTSTANDiNg DiVER Ben lane, 2009, 2010 After winning both diving events, freshman Ben Lane was named Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Year at the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships. Lane was the CCSA champion on the 3-meter dive with a score of 293.70 and won his second individual title, finishing first on the 1-meter dive with a score of 285.10. He repeated as Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Year the following season, once again sweeping the diving events at the 2010 CCSA Championships. Lane won the 1-meter with a score of 293.76 and the 3-meter with a score of 311.25.

SuSAN K. ROBERTS AWARD Ellie Trefzger, 2003-07 Ellie Trefzger received the Susan K. Roberts Award in 2007, given annually by Davidson College to a female athlete in recognition of outstanding dedication and contribution to the school’s intercollegiate athletics. Trefzger finished her four-year career on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.

hONDA iNSPiRATiON AWARD Kendra Berner, 2000-01 Kendra Berner received the Honda Inspiration Award, given nationally to a student-athlete who by perseverance has overcome personal adversity or disability or has undergone extraordinary personal sacrifice to achieve success in women’s athletics. Though born with a congenital deformation of her right hand, Berner won four silver medals in the 2000 Paralympics.

TOMMY PETERS AWARD Drew Onken, 2013 Drew Onken took home the 2013 Tommy Peters award as the top senior male athlete of the 2012-13 season. Onken departs Davidson as a three-time CCSA Swimmer of the Year and a program record holder in four individual events. While donning the black and red, he was a nine-time CCSA individual champion and a member of both the 2011 and 2013 championship team. In addition, Onken competed in both the 2012 NCAA National Championships as well as the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat women took home the inaugural title at the 2008 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships, held at the Huntersville Aquatic Center, Feb. 20-22. Head coach John Young was named women’s coach of the year, leading the Wildcats to the inaugural CCSA title in just his second year as head coach. The Wildcat women finished first with 660 points, ahead of Florida Gulf Coast (634) and Gardner-Webb (620.5). Georgia Southern (463.5), North Florida (409), College of Charleston (373), Campbell (198), Howard (104), Radford (76), N.C. A&T (64) and VMI (49) rounded out the field.

Davidson won three events and a pair of relays en route to its first team championship. Freshman Lindsey Martin won both the 50 and the 100 freestyles with times of 23.62 and 51.52, respectively, while classmate Anna Stringfield won the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.42. The Wildcats’ 400 freestyle team of junior Courtney Sanders, freshman Emily Castle, Stringfield and Martin finished first in a winning, school-record time of 3:28.52, and the 800 freestyle relay team of Stringfield, junior Courtney Sanders, sophomore Caitlin Sheetz and freshman Jessica Delgehausen won the event with a time of 7:36.75.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Davidson Wildcat men’s swimming and diving team captured the 2010 CCSA championship, held at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee Feb. 18-20. The Wildcat men defeated Gardner-Webb, 907-653, to earn the team’s first title in school history. Freshman Drew Onken was honored as Men’s Most Outstanding Freshman Performer, capturing a title in the 400 IM (3:51.93, CCSA record) and setting Davidson standards in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke. ATHENS, Ga. – In addition to the Davidson men's swimming & diving team winning their third Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championship, Drew Onken was named Swimmer of the Meet, while John Young was voted Coach of the Year, as announced Saturday evening at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium. The women's squad placed seventh overall at the meet. The Wildcat men accumulated 906.5 points for the win, defeating second-place College of Charleston (833.5) by more than 60 points. Gardner-Webb finished third (732) while VMI claimed fourth (280) and Howard rounded things out in fifth (262). The women's squad finished seventh with 262 points. Florida Gulf Coast claimed the women's title with 712 points, followed by Liberty (609) and Georgia Southern (482.5). Young was named the 2013 Men's Coach of the Year, marking the third time he has earned the acknowledgement. Onken earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for the second consecutive season after claiming three individual titles. He previously won the 200- and 400-yard individual medley events before winning the 200-yard breaststroke on the final day of competition. Onken clocked in at 2:00.25 in defending his title in the event. Onken's win was part of a 1-2-3 sweep for the Wildcats in the 200yard breaststroke. Spencer Gill was the runner up in the event, touching the pad in 2:04.14 to record the third-fastest time in program history.

Grant Smith followed in 2:04.64 to take third, also joining the all-time top-10. Drew Gill claimed eighth place, also scoring for the Wildcats with a time of 2:08.61. The Wildcats claimed third and fourth in the 1650-yard free, with Dylan Ludwick and Max Schimanski finishing back-to-back. Ludwick touched third in a time of 15:48.78, with Schimanski clocking in at 15:58.59. Davidson then placed three swimmers in the top eight of the 200yard backstroke, led by Ethan Levinson's fourth place finish in 1:50.68. Luke Burton grabbed seventh by finishing in 1:51.54 while Adam Hunter took eighth with a time of 1:52.15. Brandon Kegley led a quartet of 'Cats in the "A" final of the 100yard free, swimming a 46.09 for fourth place. Cameron Bard followed in 46.30 for fifth place, with Wills Cooper taking sixth in a time of 46.48. Ben Stewart-Bates rounded things out with an eighth place finish in a time of 46.80. Will Fox claimed a spot on the podium in the 200-yard butterfly, taking third in a career-best 1:50.56. Thomas Bigham swam to a fifthplace finish with a time of 1:52.72. The men closed out the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle, earning a narrow win over the College of Charleston. Onken, Ludwick, Bard and Kegley teamed to swim a 3:02.05 for the triumph.

In her second straight NCAA appearance, the two-time CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Year wrapped up what is sure to be a Davidson Hall of Fame career with a 45th-place time of 49.75 in the 100 freestyle prelims. Martin swam out of lane seven in heat six of nine, alongside Texas’ Kelsey Amundsen (28th, 49.07), Maryland’s Megan Lafferty (24th, 49.02), Indiana’s Brittany Strumbel (27th, 49.03), USC’s Kasey Carlson (12th, 48.48), Florida’s Sarah Bateman (38th, 49.46) and Texas’ Bethany Adams (31st, 49.18). Auburn’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace won the event’s prelim with a pool-record time of 46.91, followed by Stanford’s Kate Dwelley (47.62) and Arizona’s Margo Geer (47.70). Cal Berkeley’s Liv Jensen (47.94), Georgia’s Morgan Scroggy (48.01), Cal Berkeley’s Hannah Wilson (48.16), Texas’ Karlee Bispo (48.16) and Georgia’s Megan Romano (48.18) made it back to the championship final.

NCAA ChAMPiONShiPS 2012 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Drew Onken Earns Spot in NCAA Swimming Championships Davidson swimmer Drew Onken has been selected to swim in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships March 22-24, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. Onken is the first Davidson swimmer to be invited to the men’s championship meet and the second Wildcat swimmer to participate in the NCAA Championships, joining Lindsey Martin ‘11. ESPN3.com will stream finals sessions on March 22 and 23. Additionally, ESPNU will air a 90-minute show at 12:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, April 1. Onken qualified with his time of 3:47.38 in the 400 IM, which earned him a first-place finish in the CCSA Championships and broke the conference record. The junior also had NCAA B-cut times in the 200 IM (1:46.69, CCSA record) and 200 breaststroke (1:59.65) and will swim all three events in the NCAAs.

Onken Narrowly Misses 400 IM Finals Davidson swimmer Drew Onken finished 19th in the 400 IM and just missed out on making the finals in the event last night. He posted a time of 3:49.65, and a time of 3:48.26 would have put him in the top 16 and in the finals.

Onken Sets New School and CCSA Record in 200 Breast at NCAAs

Onken Finishes 47th in the 200 IM at the NCAA Championships Davidson swimmer Drew Onken swam the 200 IM in 1:48.04, the junior's second-fastest time, to place 47th at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday morning. Onken continues the meet tomorrow with the 400 IM.

Drew Onken set a new school and CCSA record in the 200 breast Saturday in his final event at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The junior's time of 1:59.01 earned him 28th place at the competition. The previous CCSA record in the 200 breaststroke was set by Randy Buchanan from the College of Charleston in 2009. Onken, who was named CCSA swimmer of the meet and CCSA swimmer of the year at the 2012 CCSA Conference Championship, has left a mark on the conference record book. During the 2011-2012 season, he was recognized as CCSA swimmer of the week three times for his performances. He now holds three individual conference records (200 breast, 200 individual medley, and 400 individual medley) and is on four relays that also hold the conference record. Onken is the first male swimmer from Davidson to qualify for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, and also competed this weekend in the 200 and 400 individual medley. His highest placing performance this weekend was a 19th place finish in the 400 Individual Medley. Onken continues to represent Davidson on the national level and will travel this June to Omaha, Neb., for the US Olympic Trials.

ATHLETICS ADMiNiSTRATiON CAROL QuillEN PRESIDENT

JIM MuRPhY DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 200204, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from prekindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

Sports Information Ashley Bailey is in her second season as an assistant sports information director at Davidson. She serves as the primary contact for field hockey, volleyball, swimming & diving, women’s cross country and women’s track & field. Bailey came to Davidson after spending two years at Charleston Southern University in North Charleston, S.C., where she served as the interim sports information director from August, 2011 to June, 2012. In that role, she oversaw publicity efforts for the Buccaneers’ 14 Division I athletics programs, acting as primary contact for the football, women’s basketball, baseball, golf and track & field programs. She had previously served as an assistant director of athletic communications at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. A native of South Dartmouth, Mass., Bailey earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Journalism from Ohio University in 2008 and a Master’s of Business Adiminstration from Saint Francis in 2010.
