erendipity means to find something valuable or delightful by accident when you are not looking for it. The word perfectly describes how Alain and Sallie El
Alaily stumbled upon the Venus Sophia Tea Room in Victoria’s Chinatown and found the answer to their dream of opening a vegetarian bistro. The newlyweds had just moved to Victoria from Toronto and were still (continued on page 2)

e is in his 50s and has spent his entire career in the quality-control department of a company owned by the Chinese government. His salary isn’t much, but he has made millions on the side – he won’t say precisely how – and now wants to emigrate to Canada. There is a special program designed to fast-track immigrants with money to inject into the Canadian economy, but he doesn’t really qualify. He has the required minimum of $1.6-million in assets. What he doesn’t have are the documents Canadian immigration officials want: neither banking and pay statements to show that his wealth has accumulated gradually and legitimately nor proof that he has paid taxes on it. He also doesn’t have the necessary two years’ experience in managing employees. Read in full, The Globe and Mail article by Mark Mackinnon linked on our website: www.diversityreporter.com

Vegetarian chef aims for nutritious and delicious unsure about what the future might hold. One day, while taking a walk to explore their new city, their attention was caught by the charming tea room on Fisgard Street. “We were walking through Chinatown and as soon as we saw this place, because it really stands out, you know, the outside is so beautiful, my husband said to me: ‘That’s where you’re going to be working.’ And we made a joke about it.” The couple, who both have business degrees, had been talking about opening a restaurant for awhile. They almost decided to move to Bali, Indonesia, but settled instead on Vancouver Island.
know that the restaurant was for sale. The owner said she felt instinctively that Sallie would be a good fit for the business Excitement bubbled up inside as Sallie read the e-mail. It was just 7 a.m., but she ran into the bedroom to wake her husband and tell him about the offer. “We had not even walked inside the place and it already it felt so right,” recalled Sallie. “Three days later, we were signing the contract. “And when we did finally see the place, we said, “Oh wow! This is a gorgeous location and we can make our dream come true here.” Sallie and Alain, who both have Egyp-
Sallie, 27, was raised in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and in addition to her business degree from the Academy of Science and Technology in Cairo, studied hotel management and hospitality in Hurghada, a popular tourist draw by the Red Sea. Coincidentally, her hotel management diploma was with a school that originated in Switzerland. Alain, 37, who is Egyptian on his father’s side, was born and raised in Switzerland, which was his mother’s native home. After obtaining his business and communications degree from a private university in Tuscany, Alain’s shifted his fo-
On a whim a couple of days after their walk, Sallie e-mailed the owner of the tea room to compliment her on the restaurant and ask if she was hiring. The owner replied, thanking Sallie for her interest but said she did not need anyone at the moment. A few days later, the owner contacted Sallie again. This time, the woman said she was writing on a hunch to let Sallie

cus to fine cuisine. He earned his Swiss Chef’s degree and worked professionally as a chef in Lugano for 10 years before moving back to Canada, where he lived briefly as a boy, in 2009. The single young chef was working at a popular vegetarian restaurant in Toronto and unaware of the sweet surprise that fate had in store for him. An elderly cousin in Egypt, who also
knew Sallie and her family, had repeatedly urged Alain to make the acquaintance of her young friend. His relative pointed out that Sallie was a vegetarian, also interested in photography and had recently moved to Toronto from Cairo to work for Green Peace. But with one thing and another, Alain was busy and did not get around to making the call. His impatient cousin Amina called Alain from Egypt just before Christmas in 2009 to say she was craving maple syrup. She asked Alain if he would do her a favour by delivering some syrup to her young friend, Sallie, who was flying home to Cairo to visit family. Alain finally met Sallie for coffee and
to deliver cousin Amina’s maple syrup. “It was love at first sight and we’ve been together ever since,” said a beaming Sallie, who is grateful for cousin Amina’s matchmaking skills. “I’m sure she had a very earnest craving for maple syrup,” said Alain with a laugh. The happy couple now share their passion for each other with a desire to create healthy and nutritious food from the finest ingredients at their vegetarian eatery in Chinatown. “The theme, first of all, is vegetarian, but the message is that vegetarian does not have to be bland,” said Alain. “It can be very tasty and it’s healthy, as many people know. I like to bring in the culture and tradition of the Middle East, especially Egypt, and other Mediterranean countries, such as Italy.” Sallie and Alain were back in Egypt for a visit in December and said tensions there were palpable. On Feb. 11, following 18 days of demonstrations by the Egyptian people, President Hosni Mubarak was ousted and his ruling authority transferred to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. Mubarak and his sons were later ordered detained and questioned about allegations of corruption and abuse of power. “I’m proud this happened,” said Sally. “But when the news first broke, the regime Mubarak cut off the mobile phones and the internet so we couldn’t reach our families and we were very afraid because we knew it was complete chaos and anarchy there. “But I was really excited. My father was at the protests. My whole family was there cheering them on, protesting day and night.”

Editorial The will of the people
Mohsin Abbas - Editor ‘Kashmiris have been denied their rights to determine their own future.’ Kashmir would prefer the creation of independent Kashmir state; ‘they are neither with India nor with Pakistan.’ (Krishna Pokarel, The Wall Street Journal).
I
t is good that the Western media has now accepted that the division of the subcontinent was a discriminatory one in which the right of Kashmiri people was denied at the time of partition. This is a positive development which should now
mean that the matter can be resolved through a realistic approach and decisions which should be made in accordance with the will of Kashmiri people. There are many voices for an independent Kashmir. And there has apparently been some positive change and flexibility in the Indian stance in this regard. But policymakers in Pakistan need to be wary – they will have to wait and see whether the change in stance is genuine or whether it is just another ploy to deceive Pakistan as well as Kashmiris. Public opinion is of vital important for the states to make a decision. So, being a democratic state, Pakistan has to undergo a debate at a national level before opting for any decision on Kashmir. The slogan of ‘Kashmir Banay Ga Pakistan’ (‘Kashmir will become Pakistan’) that kept the blood of the Pakistani nation warm is now being cooled down, thanks to effective propaganda by the Western and Indian media.
I would suggest that the media in Pakistan must now play its part and dispel impressions projected by the foreign and Indian media. It can initiate a debate through print and electronic media whether or not independent Kashmir is in the interest of the region. If Pakistan goes for the option of an independent Kashmir, Pakistan will have to face several consequences. The trade route to Central Asia will be affected. India would be able to achieve its objective of dividing Pakistan further by creating ideological rifts within society like Greater Balochistan, Sindhu Desh, Pakhtunistan and Independent Kashmir. Secondly, and most importantly, Independent Kashmir may not favour Kashmiris themselves because they would still end up being dependent on either Pakistan or India.

SGI wins international award for new photo identification card Saskatchewan’s new photo identification card made its red carpet debut when the International Card Manufacturers Association (ICMA) gave it the award for Best Government Identification Card. The card was given the distinction after a panel of industry experts recognized the card for its design and technical features at the ICMA annual Élan Awards for Card Manufactur-
ing Excellence on May 3. “SGI and Canadian Bank Note, the card’s manufacturer, put a lot of thought and effort into the artwork and features of the new photo ID card to ensure it captured the essence of Saskatchewan,” Minister Responsible for SGI Tim McMillan said. “We were already proud of how secure the card is and the way it showcases the
beauty of our province, but it’s great to see it getting international recognition.” The Élan Awards recognizes the worldwide cream of the crop in card design and innovation. The Government Identification Card category winner is chosen based on the card’s design creativity, attractiveness, use for identification and government services based on appearance, technical advances and security standards. “The Élan awards are coveted for being an international showcase of card excellence. Winning this award distinguishes the card before peers, customers and industry leaders,” said Ian Shaw, President, Identification and Payment Systems at Canadian Bank Note Company.

Senior National Field Hockey Championships return to Victoria Diversity Reporter Staff For the second year in a row, University of Victoria will play host to the largest domestic tournament of the year. Not only will the tournament showcase the best of Canada’s men’s and women’s field hockey players but it will also be a great stepping ground for Canada’s Junior national team athletes. Victoria has played host to some of Canada’s largest field hockey tournaments including the Women’s Olympic
qualifier in 2008 and the CIS National Championships in 2008 and 2009. The tournament is scheduled for June 29th to July 3rd, 2011 and is anticipating 8 women’s and 5 men’s teams from across the country. With the majority of the Senior national team squads being made up of British Columbians, there will be both a British Columbia “A” team and Junior National team in both the men’s and women’s divisions that will both be anticipated to reach the medal rounds.
Building on the success of last year’s tournament, the Senior National championships will be an opportunity for both current and up and coming athletes to show case their talent for women’s national team coach, Louis Mendonca, and men’s national team coach, Robin D’Abreo. Both coaches will be watching closely as the first of the 2012 London Olympic qualifiers approaches. This qualifier will be at the Pan American Games in October in Guadalajara, Mexico and all athletes will have an eye on
one of those sixteen spots. In 2010, British Columbia swept the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s division but this year, competition will prove to be tough with the presence of the Junior national teams. Familiar islanders expected to participate include former and current UVIC Vikes men Kevin Laidman, Keegan Pereira, and James Kirkpatrick, as well as women Katie Collison, Danielle Hennig, Kaitlyn Williams and Ali Lee.
Close to 600 people took part in the ORBIS Pull for Sight event at Vancouver International Airport on May 14. Vancouverites pulled a plane to support ORBIS Canada’s Mission to save sight world wide. The event, which will help give visually impaired children in developing countries the chance to receive desperately needed eye care. A total of 20 teams participated in the plane-pull competition to pull a 60-tonne FedEx 757 cargo plan 12 feet on the tarmac. Alex Huynh’s team claimed victory for the fastest pull.

Putting yourself out there in a new culture takes guts
By Yukari Tanji
T
he other day I had a chance to sit down with Mohsin Abbas, editor of the Diversity Reporter. He said, “Do you remember the first day we talked? You said you couldn’t write.” I do remember. I didn’t feel confident
at all that I could write a column in English that focused on issues relating to young immigrant women. Even though I had always enjoyed writing, the idea of native English speakers reading my writing in a second language intimidated me. Mohsin encouraged me and told me that at one time he could not write in English either and has since become the editor of his own newspaper. His words opened my eyes and inspired me. I can now honestly say that I enjoy writing in English and and am building my confidence with each column that I write. After all, it would be hypocritical of
me to encourage my students to go and get volunteer work in order to gain confidence and experience in a new culture. Even departing students often tell me that they think their English is not good enough. I realize it is not easy for them to leave the comfort zone of the ESL bubble and to communicate, as they say, “as Canadians.” I encourage students to try new things to build their confidence. Still, I understand the challenge because my own comfort level with my cultural competence goes up and down. My friend David once told me I was being too hard on myself. He reminded me that it was brave of me to move to
Canada by myself, to struggle with a second language and live in an entirely new culture every day. I did not view my experience as confidence building — just the opposite, in fact. But Mohsin offered some good advice when I told him that I couldn’t write. “He said: ‘Today, go home and write your column down on paper and then put it up on the fridge. ‘It’s not that hard,’” he said. And so I did. It worked like a charm.
Chris Cornell was at centre of Seattle’s Grunge Scene
By Anthem Man
ENGAGE
Chris Cornell was the lead singer for one of the most influential bands to emerge from one of the most influential music scenes of the 1990s, Seattle’s Grunge music scene. As a solo artist, however, Cornell has been unable to match that same level of influence. Soundgarden was the first of “the big four” from the Emerald City to sign with a major record label. (Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains round out “the big four”) Cornell was a big reason for Seattle’s success. His lyrics, his looks and his voice helped to define the scene. Although Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” undoubtedly turned the music industry on its head and changed MTV’s

video programming forever, it’s important to note that it’s the quality of the Seattle music scene that made the world notice that this scene was not a flash in the pan. Grunge was a historic moment in the footnote of Rock history, like San Francisco in the 1960s and London in the 1970s. Seattle in the early 1990s, will be cited in the history books as a top musical scene. To understand this in greater detail watch “Hype,” a brilliant documentary about the Seattle music scene. Soundgarden called it a day in 1997 but Cornell was quick to release a solo album, Euphoria Morning, in 1999. The album wasn’t as heavy as Soundgarden, nor was it a major success, but it had some great songs. In 2000, Cornell teamed up with members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave. They released just 3 well received records and toured extensively throughout their short 7 years of activity. Cornell continued to make more solo records but they too were not wellreceived. One particularly poor effort, Scream, was produced by hip-hop
The United Nations proclaimed the International Year of Youth starting on August 12, 2010 and running until August 11, 2011. This is also the year that the Saanich Youth Council found its roots and took shape in our community. In recognition of these important occasions, we are excited to announce that Mayor Frank Leonard has declared May 2011 as Youth Engagement Month in Saanich, BC. During the month of May 2011, we look forward to celebrating youth in our communities, promoting effective dialogue and greater understanding across generations. About the Saanich Youth Council The Saanich Youth Council (SYC) is committed to engaging youth in the community. SYC was established to create opportunities for youth to participate in the local Municipality, bringing issues forward and providing feedback on a regular basis to the local government. SYC will participate in local process and develop mechanisms within current structures for young people to have their voices heard. heavyweight Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. That record missed on all levels, calling into question Cornell’s musical direction. Since splitting with Audioslave in 2007, Cornell has been getting back to basics: A man and a guitar, stripped down like early Bob Dylan. Cornell’s got a lot going on these days. Besides a solo tour, he has reunited with some old friends for one hotly anticipated tour: Soundgarden. In advance of that forthcoming tour, Cornell played a solo set at Victoria’s Royal Theatre on April 29th. For more than 2 hours, Cornell played songs from his entire career, Soundgarden, Audioslave and some choice covers as well. Soundgarden songs, including megahits “Black Hole Sun,” “Mind Riot,” “Fell on Black Days” and “Burden in my Hand” were highlights. Among the Audioslave songs the audience was treated to were “Doesn’t Remind Me,” “Be Yourself,” and “Like A Stone.” One of Cornell’s finest and more obscure records is Temple of the Dog. In 1991, members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam joined forces to pay tribute to a friend, Andrew Wood, who died of a drug overdose a year earlier. The resulting songs formed the
core of Temple of the Dog. These were songs from the heart, songs for a friend. It’ll bring a tear to the eye. “Say Hello to Heaven,” Call Me a Dog,” “Hunger Strike” and “All Night Thing” are from that project and were surprising additions to Cornell’s show. Cornell’s ability goes far beyond great songwriting and performing; he has a grasp of musical history as well. This was evident in the covers he played: The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life,” Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You,” Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” A full 30 song setlist that just kept getting better with each song. To understand the high level of the performance, do yourself a favor: go to YouTube and search for clips of Cornell with the songs mentioned above and enjoy them. I was fortunate to see Soundgarden four times back in the day and I am pleased to announce that they’ve reunited. They will be in Vancouver on July 29th at Rogers Arena. Don’t miss out.
