Faringdon is one of the first communities in England to be selected to develop a Neighbourhood Plan. This means Faringdon residents now have an exceptional opportunity to control the future development of their town. For this to happen, the Neighbourhood Plan for Faringdon needs to be agreed. This includes consideration of essential services, such as: Housing, Education, Employment and Leisure Facilities. Most importantly the Town Council needs to ensure that the final plan reflects what the people of Faringdon want. The Neighbourhood Plan is a unique opportunity for you to influence the future of your town. There is more information available at www.faringdonplan.webs.com or contact Peter Anderson, Neighbourhood Plan Administrator on 07703 050 533 or email peter.h.anderson.t21@btinternet.com

Lets Talk about Whisky
As I write this, they promise that summer may finally be on the way so here’s a few ideas for whiskies you might enjoy sipping on those hot evenings that lie ahead… Both Ken and I are big fans of grain whiskies. Too often treated as the poor relations of the whisky world and used simply as a constituent of a blend, these whiskies, particularly the older ones, can be absolutely delightful. Grain whisky is produced from any grain other than malted barley and the good ones tend to be light and elegant with vanilla overtones that some compare to ice cream – perfect for summer. Whiskies to look for include Compass Box Hedonism, Cambus, Caledonian, Girvan, North British and Port Dundas. Whisky makes a great base for all sorts of mixology wizardry and for a celebratory summer occasion why not try a whisky and champagne cocktail? Place a sugar cube in the bottom of the glass, pour a few drops of Angostura bitters on, add a measure of Chivas Regal 12 year old and top up with Perrier Jouet champagne. Or for an oriental twist here’s a recipe from Suntory brand ambassador and top mixologist Zoran Peric. Take one drop of chocolate bitters, 20ml sweet vermouth and 40ml Yamazaki 12 year old. Stir well over ice (30 to 40 seconds) and strain in to a martini glass, finish with cherry and orange zest. Beats Pimms any day! Finally, for an instant pick me up after long hot day just fill a Highball glass with some ice, add a measure of Compass Box Great King Street whisky and top up with soda water to taste. Then as the good folk at Compass Box say – share and enjoy!

We love our pets. They are wonderful playmates, trusted companions and fill our lives with joy and warmth. Many of them join our families when they're quite young and end up growing up with us. However, years after being with us, we still tend to look at them as the eternal puppy or kitten. But this is not so. Animals age just as we humans do. With age their life style and food requirements change, and the susceptibility to disease increases dramatically. It is important that we, as their carers, are aware of this and treat them accordingly. So, when does an animal become “elderly”? This very much depends on the species and the breed. In dogs, smaller breeds generally live longer than large breeds. The average life span for a Chihuahua would be up to 15 years, that of an Irish Wolfhound only 7. Cats become “senior citizens” after the age of 7 or 8 - their average life span being 12-16 years - with some making it over 20! A rabbits' average life expectancy is set around 10 years, smaller mammals such as guinea pigs 6 to 8 and hamsters only up to the age of 2 years old. If we look carefully at our pets, we will be able to pick up subtle signs of aging: they become grey around the muzzle, slow down a bit and spend more time sleeping - something we all will do when we're older! You also might find that they're a bit stiff when getting up, eat with less enthusiasm, lose weight or start drinking more than before. This could mean that they are ill and need help. Taking your pet to the vet regularly – at least once a year – will help to pick up these issues early thereby ensuring that help will be given sooner rather than later. Common diseases that become more of a risk at an older age are: Arthritis – just like humans, pets can become arthritic with age. It means that they will be less mobile and moving particular joints can actually be very painful. Heart Disease – the blood supply to the body isn't as good. Animals start slowing down. Kidney Failure – a problem that commonly develops in older cats, but also not uncommon in dogs. Suspicious signs are increased thirst, weight loss and dull coat Dental Disease – pets don't brush their teeth twice daily, so we have to help them to keep their teeth clean. Cancer – growths are more likely to occur at an older age and early detection and treatment is crucial to prevent serious ill-health. Food requirements also change after a certain age. Dogs’ and cats' nutrition should be changed after the age of 7. At this age, their bodies benefit from a reduced amount of protein and fat as well as from increased amounts of certain minerals and fibre. Only good quality professional pet foods will help to achieve this. As their body changes with age, dogs' exercise levels will have to be adjusted accordingly. One can't expect them to always fetch the ball any more! Regular check-ups will make sure that your pet will be able to live its whole life span happily- and healthily. Problems can be detected and discussed at an early stage. You can then do something to ensure that they don't develop into something life threatening thereby ensuring that you can enjoy more of those days with Rover, Tabby and Bugs. Formerly a 16th Century wool merchant’s house, the Plough Hotel and Restaurant in Clanfield looks picture perfect as you approach the front of the building. First impressions mean so much and you don’t get better than this! The inside of the hotel is just as impressive, the bar area is decorated with lots of interesting features and antiques, but somehow maintains a modern feel. After a quick slurp and our orders placed, we were shown to the dining room. The same feel runs throughout, old and modern combined, a lovely relaxed feel to the place. Starters of - Seared Hand Dived Scallops with black pudding and quails eggs - Local Asparagus with poached egg, parmesan and hollandaise. Each dish looked and tasted beautiful, service between courses is excellent, the staff very friendly and professional. Main courses of- Baked Loin of Cod, with buttered beans, chorizo and spring onions – Roast Rack of Lamb with braised red cabbage, fondant potatoes and rosemary jus. Both dishes were exceptional; the attention to detail on presentation is top quality. It was hard to choose from the dessert menu as they all looked good; in the end we opted for Vasparetto espresso coffee with vanilla ice-cream over amaretto. Oh yes’ we will definitely be going back for some more of this, yummy!! The evening was a total joy, fantastic food, superb service, all set in wonderful surroundings. To think that this little gem is right on our doorstep Faultless! The Plough Hotel and Restaurant have some great offers on at the moment. Birdie Tales Collared Dove
(Streptopelia decaocto) It’s difficult to imagine that the Collared Dove, one of our most common garden birds, has only been resident in Britain since the mid 1950’s. Previous to that the Collared Dove was mostly found in warmer parts of Southern Europe and Asia. During the 1930’s the birds started to spread across Europe at high speed, one possible explanation could be related to warmer winters, though this is hard to justify as they also moved into Scandinavia and Northern Russia. Also known as the “Marmite bird”, their familiar repetitive cooing may seem pleasant to some, but monotonous and irritating to others. (Why am I reminded of David Cameron?) Their markings are very distinctive, especially the black/dark grey collar around the nape of their neck. Brown/pale grey feathers cover the majority of their body and head, with black tips to their wings. Their eyes appear black; they are actually red with a large black pupil. Large increases in numbers over the past sixty years (estimated at over 300,000 pairs) are explained by their long breeding season, from late February through to October, rapid breeding cycle, normally clutches of 2 eggs hatch in 14 days, fledging the nest 15-18 days later. (3 x per year) The nest is an incredible platform of wobbly twigs, mainly in trees, but occasionally in odd locations in buildings. The male collects the twigs, passing them to the female to construct the nest; both share the incubating duties, the male during the day – female by night. Their silhouette can sometimes be mistaken for a Sparrowhawk by smaller birds as they fly to the ground at speed. Some bird lovers find them too aggressive, chasing other birds away from the bird-table when foraging for grain or seed. While not everyone welcomes the Collared Dove into their garden, you have to respect this remarkable colonist. Some may even come to appreciate its undoubted beauty if they look a little harder.

Exercises that you can do at home to burn fat.
Last month we looked at foods that are good and foods that are bad if you are looking to lose weight. What about exercise? What are the best exercises for weight loss? · It is important to know that it is better not to eat something bad than to try to ‘exercise it off’ – YOU CANNOT OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET. Think before you eat those cakes and biscuits. To burn off the energy in a small pack of digestives you will need to walk upstairs continuously for at least 1 HOUR . · We know from our extensive practical experience that a mix of resistance training (with weights) and high intensity cardiovascular exercise is the best way to train for weight loss. · Movement involving more than one muscle group at a time burns off more energy – for example squatting up and down whilst doing some bicep curls with hand weights. · Cardiovascular training such as running, cycling and swimming is always seen to be a good way to lose weight. The trouble for most people is that they do not, or are unable, to do these exercise at a high enough intensity to get great results. Plodding away on a treadmill for hours is not making the best use of your valuable time. · Intensity is the key. Working with proper technique to suit your ability, using exercises that push you past your comfort zone takes you to a place where results happen. · Combining good quality exercise and nutrition will help you achieve your goals much more quickly than just exercise on its own. · EASY TO DO AT HOME: If you are new to exercise try step ups on the bottom step of the stairs, hold some weights (plastic squash bottles filled with water) to intensify the workout. Increase the weight as you improve. · EASY TO DO AT HOME: Squat up and down or lunge as you clean your teeth in the morning and at night. · Exercising at home can be difficult for some of us to create the right intensity and exercise with correct technique to get the most from the workout without injury. Choosing the most appropriate exercise for you is extremely important. Need help? Gives us a call at The Gym at Carswell 01367 870837 or email us at LoseWeight@thegymatcarswell.co.uk Next month we will be looking at things that prevent weight loss.

A Snapshot of Sémillon! One of the great things about wine is the rediscovery of different varietal's.
My latest being the white grape variety, sémillon. Often blended with other grapes, in particular sauvignon blanc, sémillon can be quite bland if over cropped. The yields of Semillon must be kept low if the aim is to achieve quality. It has an amazing affinity to oak, especially new oak, which imparts aromas and flavours (depending on what type of oak is used) such as vanilla and almonds. The most interesting characteristic of Semillon is found in its role of producing a range of wine; from the great sweet wines of Sauternes to the rich aged wines of the Hunter Valley, Australia. The sweet wines are produced from the effects of Noble rot, also known as the fungus Botrytis Cinerea. This fungus infects the berry at fruit set as it ripens, where the climatic conditions are humid in the mornings and evenings with dry sunny days. It acts on the grape berry, metabolising the acids (which can be harsh) and sugars, producing glycerol, which gives the wine the silkiness on the palate. The result is a rather nasty looking shrivelled up bunch of grapes! However, the resultant wine provides a lusciously sweet, yet not cloying wine with remarkable length and a long list of aromas and flavours such as marmalade, honey, dried apricots, marzipan and many more! A well made example of a dry white Semillon from Australia can be described as herbaceous on the nose, with lemon and spice underpinned with vanilla and almonds. The length should be long and finish fresh, with balanced acidity. Cloud Computing and Cloud Services bring new ways of thinking about computing architecture and delivery models. With Cloud, everything becomes a service that companies can use to create new initiatives without a massive up front investment. Cloud Computing offers new unique business benefits and will help change the way businesses collaborate, operate, and compete. How does it all work? You can think of Cloud as a way to access new kinds of technology-enabled services. Organisations today have choices in how they source and implement business services. They can access them in-house, have them hosted, outsource them entirely, or acquire them through the Cloud. At the end of the day, most organisations will have a hybrid environment comprising services from multiple sources. What does this mean to you and your business? Companies are already beginning to find some important new sources of value in Cloud Services. The Cloud can eliminate many of the complex constraints inherent in traditional architectures and service delivery models, and can lead to cost and efficiency savings. But perhaps the most interesting dynamic in how Cloud Services like social networks and collaboration tools are changing the way people in businesses access and share information. What is the benefit to your organisation? As companies address the potential requirement for Cloud services, it’s immediately apparent that the numerous benefits remove companies concerns for Est. 1986 working from the Cloud. Flexible Working being one as Cloud enables you to work remotely from any location as if you were sat at your desk in the office, with access to your entire IT infrastructure anywhere in the world. It’s Scalable, so now offices can grow with no restrictions placed upon them. This enables organisations to open smaller offices in any locations as long as they have an internet connection, still giving them access to all of their important company data. Cost Savings in numerous ways, no longer are servers required on site, which means less power consumption, and more importantly a greener way of working into the future (reduces carbon footprint). Conclusion There is a Cloud solution out there for all businesses, it’s just a matter of what model will benefit your business the most, Public Cloud, Private Cloud or Hybrid Cloud. CIS Ltd offer a free no obligation consultation to discuss you organisations Cloud hosting requirements so why not ask the professionals how Cloud can help your business, it doesn’t cost to ask! Computing Information Systems - Cloud Made Clear sales@cisltd.com - 01367 700 555 “You don't keep your cash in a locked desk drawer, you keep it in the bank, so why would you keep your companies intellectual property in an office and not in secure remote location away from disaster or theft". Ensure you aren't caught out when driving in France Recent statistics show that each year three million Britain's drive their car abroad and even more commercial vehicle drivers; with the majority travelling through France. However it would seem that many are unaware of the new law recently imposed by the French government which could see many drivers presented with an unexpected fine. On 1st July new legislation brought in by the French government requires all motorists to carry a breathalyser kit in their vehicle and, if caught without one, will face an immediate fine of €11 (£9.00). Single-use breathalyser kits are available from as little as £2 and should be available from ferry port shops and other high-street retailers. it would be sensible to carry at least two single-use kits so if one is required a spare is still available! The French drink driving limit is 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, lower than the UK limit of 80mg. Motorists that are found with between 50mg and 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood could be fined €135 (£109) and face six points on their driving licence; above 80mg could lead to a fine of €4,500 (£3,629), loss of licence and a prison sentence of up to two years. Doubts have been cast on the accuracy of breathalyser kits and the general rule must be “If you drink, don’t drive!” People driving in France are already required to carry a warning triangle and a fluorescent safety vest in the main section of their vehicle. In addition they must display a GB plate and have their headlights adjusted to the right. Satellite navigation systems that detect speed cameras are also banned and even if not in use, could lead to a fine of €1,500 (£1,209).
