Lets Talk about Whisky
Traditionally, most people think of whisky as coming predominantly from Scotland. Whilst this is far from true nowadays it’s still a good place to start as I continue my theme of the diversity of whiskies. For ease of classification whisky is often tagged with the region it comes from. Hence, there are whiskies from Speyside, the Highlands, the Islands, Islay, and Campbeltown. With our typically human motivation to make things easy for our brains it has been convenient for certain characteristics to be given to each region. For example, whiskies from Islay are usually expected to be big peat ‘monsters’ whereas those from Speyside would be expected to be delicate and floral with very little peat discernable. However, the influence of local environmental factors, and even the preferences of distillery owners, have always combined to produce whiskies that are against ‘type’ and you can use this to your advantage when looking for a new whisky to enjoy. If you’re not sure whether you’ll like peated whisky then try something like the delightful Curiositas from the BenRiach distillery, which has the typical Speyside lightness and sweetness combined with a smokiness that is more akin to a coal fire than the full on, smack in the face peat of many Islay malts. Conversely, if you love Islay malts but want to experience what they can be like without the famed iodine infused taste then try Bunnahabain – lots of flavour but virtually no peat. Finally, for the ultimate compare and contrast experience, look no further than Bruichladdich from Islay – whose range includes both an elegant, floral, unpeated style and also the most heavily peated whisky made to date! Parasite Control
Ta l k t o the V et
Have you ever been bitten by a flea? Then you know how itchy it can be. Now multiply the itch by a hundred and you know what poor Rover or Tigger must feel constantly when hassled by the parasites. This is the case when our pets are not appropriately treated with flea control and with summer here (hopefully!) they will be reproducing all the quicker. There can be literally hundreds of fleas on one animal! But this is not where it stops! Many animals become allergic to the saliva and develop an agonizing inflammation of the skin called Flea Allergy Dermatitis. This is when the animal becomes highly sensitive to flea bites and consequently scratches and bites itself - up to the point of bleeding! But again, this is not all! Fleas can also carry other parasites in them and pass them on when biting our pets. Immature fleas pick up tape worm larvae from the environment. Puppies and kittens can even become anaemic, due to the amount of blood taken by the fleas. The most commonly found flea on our pets (dogs and cats!) is the Cat Flea. Only the adult flea lives on our pets but it makes up only 5% of the flea population. The remaining 95% of the population, i.e. eggs, larvae and pupae, lives in the flea's environment, which means the pet's environment. And of course this is, inevitably, your house! Poor Tigger, and poor pet owner, since the hungry fleas will jump on any passing warm blooded creatures, including humans! The secret to successful flea control is treating both your pet AND the environment with products that kill the adult and immature flea. Only your vet will be able to give you treatment effective enough to get rid of the infestation. Usually this is via a drop on the back of the neck of your pet and a spray for your house. Non-prescription products, i.e. those you can buy in the pet shop, are rarely effective enough. Once you have got rid of the problem, do not stop treating your pet! Only a regular flea treatment will prevent a recurrence of the problem and will keep your pet – and your house – free of those nasty little insects. As already mentioned, tape worms can be transmitted via fleas. However, this is not the only way worms can enter your pet's body. Other routes are through eating infested mice (owners of hunting cats beware!), licking worm egg infested objects in the park (e.g. other animals' faeces) or, in the case of round worms, through the mother's milk. And once again, these nasty parasites don't only affect your pet. Children, in particular, can be susceptible, in rare cases even causing blindness! Getting rid of these nasty parasites is relatively easy. Your vet will give you either tablets, pastes or “spot-on” products which will make sure worms will not pose any risks to yourself or your pet. Regular check ups at your local vet surgery will ensure that your pet remains healthy and free of parasites - and it will give you peace of mind. Feel free to drop in or phone for advice. We are only too willing to help. Graham Pursey 01367 242777

Restaurant Review Horse & Jockey
For those amongst us who have dined at the Horse & Jockey before, it will come as no surprise to hear how excellent the food and service is at this lovely 600 year old village Inn. However, it has been some time since we have eaten here and to say the standard is now even higher is an understatement! Husband and wife team Charles and Anna Gaunt have created a lovely friendly atmosphere in this picturesque traditional British pub. On entering, the bar area feels warm, welcoming and relaxed, horsey memorabilia and pictures hang from the walls through to the rear candle lit dining room. The menu is varied and extensive, offering a wide choice of dishes; we opted for a shared starter of whole baked camembert, served with ciabatta bread and red onion marmalade. Blimey if you are hungry this is the one for you, delicious and extremely filling. Followed by – leg of lamb steak, sauté potatoes, pea and mint puree, cauliflower cheese with red wine sauce – Escallops of pork loin, braised beetroot and apricot, with armagnac sauce and dauphinoise potatoes from the frequently changing specials board. Each plate was meticulously presented, I cannot stress enough just how good this food looked and tasted! If you are looking for desserts to rattle your taste buds, the Horse & Jockey boast an array of gooey treats, twenty one different homemade ice creams, served with homemade fudge and truffles, toffee apple crumble, millionaires shortbread, the options are endless. We chose to share sticky toffee pudding with homemade fudge ice cream and hot toffee sauce. Honestly it’s worth calling in to try one of these alone. I offer my compliments to the chef Georgina, who is the proud daughter of Charles and Anna; she is an extremely talented cook who is clearly happy in her work. Exciting, value for money cuisine, if you haven’t tried the Horse & Jockey yet, you are truly missing out!

Ed Vaizey MP will be launching the public share offer for Westmill Solar Co-operative at 1pm on Saturday 23rd June, during the Sustainable Energy Fair at the 5MW solar farm at Westmill farm near Watchfield. The share offer is open to everyone to enable community ownership of the project and priority will be given to local people if the offer is over subscribed. The minimum investment is £250. The solar farm has been performing well above its predicted output since commissioning in July last year and investors should get an average return on investment above 10%. Westmill Solar Farm is the largest solar farm in the UK and as it was commissioned before August last year it benefits from the highest rate of government backed feed in tariff that will underpin its income for the next 24 years. This is therefore a unique opportunity to invest into a project on this scale, with these returns. For more information visit: www.westmillsolar.coop, phone 01367 700 616 or come along to the launch event and see the solar farm yourself. There will be lots of stalls, events, children’s activities, food and music as part of the WeSET Sustainable Energy Fair – entry is free.

Birdie Tales Swallow
(Hirundo rustica) I know it may not feel like it, but spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. One of the most familiar and welcoming sights to herald this time of year is the graceful migratory swallow. As the saying goes ‘one swallow does not make a summer; but summer without swallows swooping around our skies is unthinkable. Originally cliff dwellers, they have taken to living near human habitation, especially farms and stables where the concentration of flying insects is greatest. On the rare occasion when a swallow will settle on the ground, it is for the collection of wet mud from edges of ponds, rivers and puddles to make their nests. If wet mud is hard to find they will take over old nests, including house martins and blackbirds, as long as there is protection from rain. Identified by their long wings, forked tail and red throat, swallows are close relations to the house martin, who like the swift, tend to feed at much greater height. Both sexes are involved in nest building and take turns in incubating their eggs, once hatched, both will feed the young up to four hundred times per day. We witness this feeding frenzy above our heads every summer, as they collect wasps and flies at break neck speed. The treacherous lifestyle of the swallow, involving an annual migration across two continents, means that the parents will need to raise as many young as possible so they will have a second and maybe even a third brood before heading back to warmer climes in the autumn. Although we tend to think of the swallow as quintessentially British, this beautiful bird travels six thousand miles from South Africa each spring, to nest and rear its young, returning back again each September. A traditional end of summer sight is the congregation of thousands of swallows on telegraph wires, before their long arduous journey, providing a welcoming sight across two hemispheres for this universally popular bird. Weight loss – The basics
We have put together some pointers to get you started and avoid the diet trap. For long term weight loss.....................… Ÿ Avoid consciously restricting calories – you will end up being hungry and craving bad foods Ÿ Avoid getting really hungry – Hunger makes it hard to make good food choices Ÿ Avoid ‘Low fat’ foods – fat is not inherently fattening – ‘Low fat’ foods tend to be high in sugars leading to weight gain and cravings. Ÿ Avoid ‘dieting’ – look to eating healthily - if you go on a diet, it implies there will be an end to it – what do you do then? Ÿ Focus on the quality of the food you eat – eat natural unprocessed foods that satisfy and are nutritious, giving the body the things that it needs. Ÿ Focus on eating lean proteins that satisfy and fill you up – go easy on those starchy carbohydrates and sugars, they are fillers that offer very little nutrition. Ÿ Chew your food – eating quickly leads to a feeling of dissatisfaction leading to overeating Ÿ Drink plenty of water – keep you body hydrated to aid digestion and flush out toxins Ÿ Keep active – walk, use the gym, join a class – move your body to stimulate your metabolism to burn energy and give you a sense of well being Ÿ Keep positive – one bad day does not make a bad week! – focus on how your clothes fit not on what the scales tell you – set yourself a realistic goal and stick to it Ÿ Make friends with food. Concentrate not on what you can’t eat, but what you can.
You now have some basics that are proven to work. Next month we will give you a list of foods that help with long term weight loss. Remember eating healthily is for life not just for a week or two. If you need advice please contact the team at The Gym At Carswell 01367 870837 email us at LoseWeight@thegymatcarswell.co.uk

Free 1 hour tours will be run at 11 am and 3 pm on each of these days – no need to book. Tutored tastings of our new vintage will be available free of charge all day with cheese and biscuits. REVIEWS
Winemaking in England is hardly a new activity. Vines were planted back in Roman times, followed by monastries that preserved the tradition and in 1086, the Domesday Book recorded 42 vineyards. Then it petered out with the dissolution of the monasteries coupled with climatic and agricultural changes. Then part way through the last decade, English vine growing was revived, albeit more of a ‘retirement hobby’. Over the last ten to fifteen years, the industry has become professional and the recent growth in the number of vineyards is much less significant than the increase in their average size. Denbies, in Surrey is the largest single estate vineyard with 107ha. Planting began last year on Rathfinny Vineyard, on the Sussex Downs that when fully planted, will be more than twice the size and cover 242ha. There are more than 400 vineyards that stretch from the Isles of Scilly to the Yorkshire Dales. The collective production is around 4 million bottles, the majority being light, aromatic whites, with increasing quantities of sparkling wines as well as rosé and a smaller proportion of red wine. Attention has been drawn to Kent and Sussex, where regions with chalky soils have been compared to those of Champagne in France. In September 2010, Decanter World Wine Awards recognised the outstanding quality of Sussex based Ridgeview’s Grosvenor Blanc de Blancs 2006, awarding it the trophy for the best sparkling wine in the world, ahead of entries from Champagne. The International Wine Challenge of 2011 saw Chapel Down in Kent pick up gold for its sparkling rosé brut while Denbies picked up gold for its still Chalk Ridge Rosé 2010. Locally, UK Vineyards Association awarded silver medals to Bothy Vineyard, Filford Heath for their 2010 vintages of Oxford Dry, Doctor’s Bacchus and Renaissance. Hendred Vineyard, East Hendred, received silver from the same association for their Hendred Brut 2008 and Furlong 2010. With the forthcoming events of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee English Wine Week (1st – 10th June) and the Olympics, wave those British flags madly with a glass of something as equally English in the other!! Bothy Vineyard Oxford Dry 2010 £7.90 This crisp wine has a floral nose, yellow plums and greengage on the palate, with crisp acidity and a long finish. This is a blend of Solaris, Huxelrebe, Findling, Perle, and Kerner, which when blended together give the Dry its lively fruit and floral nose. Lovers of Sauvignon Blanc will enjoy this wine. Available from Bothy Vineyard, Frilford Heath. Open Fridays and Saturdays 10-5pm and the first Sunday of each month. Tours available upon request. Faringdon Environmental Group Tour 22nd June 2012. The most popular uses for hypnotherapy are around stress and anxiety conditions though, and one of my specialities – phobias, having suffered with many phobias myself in the past, I love helping others overcome theirs.” “My main area of work however is with performance enhancement such as public speaking, sports and interviews, any situation where anxiety stops you performing at your best. how S g o D n u F & ir a F Longcot Village
Sunday 24th June 2012 12-5pm Building on the success of last year’s inaugural Longcot Village Fair, planning is now in full swing for this year’s event. The afternoon will be packed with activities for all the family and their four-legged friends and George Scarrot will once again provide a mini fairground with some fabulous rides.
Thanks to the generous loan of a giant marquee, the day will be one for villagers to remember, come rain or shine. Once again, the organisers are looking to fill the marquee with stalls and charity displays to create a local ‘covered market’. Outside activities include a Bouncy Castle, a Fun Dog Show organised by The Dog Studio and an opportunity for villagers to test their athletic talent by taking part in Longcot’s very own ‘Games’. Delicious food and hot and cold drinks will also be available. The Longcot Village Fair & Fun Dog Show is in aid of the St Mary's Open Door Project which aims to raise funds to build a kitchen and toilet facilities to enable wider community use of the church. Tickets can be purchased on the day: Adults £2, Children £1. Free car parking with access from Mallins Lane. Anyone wishing to take a stall, exhibit or offer help on the day should contact: Glenice Larcombe on 01793 783515/glarcombe@talktalk.net or Abi Weston-Edwards (abi@edwagu.plus.com).

faringdon festival 2012 faringdon festival Music Weekend 6 – 8 July 2012 It seems possible that the faringdon festival might move to the Folly Park this year. The move to Folly Park would be welcomed by those in town who find the inconvenience of too many people and too much noise in the town a real nuisance whilst many locals (individuals and businesses) will miss the familiar “buzz” in the Market Place. Last year we attracted visitors from miles away and we hope this will be repeated this year. Visit www.focusonuk.co.uk for regular updates.
faringdon SK8 An event will be held at the faringdon Skate park and Faringdon and District Cricket Club on Sunday July 8 from 10am until 8pm. Rugby training / touch rugby games (depending on pitch & weather conditions) Cricket training and kids cricket sessions (depending on pitch & weather conditions) Music from local DJ's and bands, Refreshment stalls, including food and soft drinks.
