Lets Talk about Whisky
When I looked up ‘whisky drinker’ on Google the stereotypes I found included: older gentleman, hardcore drinker, cowboys (!), Scotsman… Hmm, none of the above describe me or, indeed, many of my fellow whisky lovers and so a good starting point for an exploration of the world of whisky seems to be what inspires my passion for whisky and why I think it’s a drink that anyone can enjoy. Whisky is made from just three ingredients – grain, water and yeast. The basic process is to make a strong ‘beer’, distil it two or three times to produce a clear spirit then store it in a cask, where it acquires not only its colour but also many of its flavours and aromas. What is special about this deceptively simple process is that, in this world of homogeneity, the influence of individual people, ingredients, processes and environments is very evident in the final product – many thousands of whisky expressions have been produced and each has their own particular taste and personality. Additionally, the amber nectar in your glass can be a single malt, a blended malt, a grain whisky or a blended whisky, and could have originated from countries as diverse as Scotland or India, so you soon start to see what an intriguing and varied spirit whisky is – and why we say there is a whisky out there to suit everyone! Whisky has the ability to be contemporary or traditional, robust or silky smooth. Whisky drinkers can be male or female, and from 18 to 80+. Stereotyping has no place in the whisky world, and over the next few months we’ll look at whisky’s wonderful diversity and explore different whiskies you might like to try. Birdie Tales Rook
(Corvus frugilegus)
Where the Thames Meets the Cotswolds An historic riverside Inn The Trout at Tadpole Bridge offers some of the finest locally sourced food, a great selection of cask ales, over 200 different wines, six individually designed bedrooms and private moorings on the Thames. Situated between Bampton and Buckland, the inn is 15 minutes south of Witney. Tuesday 15th May - Lunch for Ladies Who Like a Good Wine, see our website for further details. Fabulous selection of fresh fish, local game and succulent Ribeye steak. Buckland Marsh, Oxfordshire, SN7 8RF www.trout-inn.co.uk t. 01367 870382 info@trout-inn.co.uk
When it comes to an ugly contest in the bird world, the Rook wins hands-down. Similar in size to the Carrion Crow but more untidy in its appearance, they are easily identified by grey/white skin at the base of the bill, a peaked head and shaggy thigh feathers that resemble baggy trousers. With over 1.2 million breeding pairs of these unsightly birds throughout the UK, flocks of Rooks overhead (often accompanied by Jackdaws) are a familiar sight to us all. The Rook is an extremely social bird, foraging in groups and nesting communally, pairs stay together for years, often for life. Not so well known amongst us is the Rooks intelligence. When it comes to brains, the Great British Rook stands alone! They are prolific problem solvers, able to use tools to reach their goal. Tests carried out showed that Rooks can bend a length of straight wire into a hook, enabling them to retrieve worms from the bottom of a glass tube. If the tube is partially filled with water, the Rook will drop stones in to raise the water level until the worm is reachable. Evidence enough of how bright this strange looking bird is, but I would like to share with you my own personal favourite. Scientists studying Rook behavior, filmed Rooks collecting nuts and dropping them onto a main road, vehicles ran over the nuts, cracking them open for the birds to retrieve. Now this is clever in itself but even more impressive in this case was that the birds had picked a stretch of road next to a pedestrian crossing. They would wait for someone to press the button at the crossing, holding back until the lights turn red before descending to collect the cracked nuts in safety. This clearly demonstrates a clear comprehension of cause and effect, as well as an appreciation of a wholly alien (human) concept, traffic lights‌ Ugly most definitely, bird brained I think not!! Obesity – A problem for people and pets! Obesity is a serious problem of our times – in both people and their pets. Animals don't usually suffer from heart attacks in the same way as people do. However, they (like us) are susceptible to a number of other very serious health concerns related to being overweight. These all lead to a poor quality of life, i.e. unhappy animals! Who wouldn't be able to tell the difference in happiness between a slim and energetic dog playing in the park, and an obese one who hardly manages to waddle those 300 feet getting to the park!? Most overweight animals are not made that way by themselves, it’s usually because of their owners! In both man and animals, overfeeding and lack of exercise are the main causes of obesity. Too much food, and often the wrong type of food, can cause the daily calorific intake to increase dramatically. If the balance between calories taken in versus calories burnt off isn't right the body will produce large fat deposits. As a result the animal becomes overweight and eventually obese. Your veterinarian is indispensable in helping your pets to get back to normal weight and consequently greatly improve their chances of living a healthier, happier and longer life. He/she will advise you on the right type of food, the right amount of food and how to help “burn off” those excess calories. Pet food manufacturers have given us a wide range of brands and formulas specifically designed to match your pet’s needs at the different stages of his/her life. The required amount of daily calories decreases with age, it changes after animals have been neutered and, of course, as in man, varies in each individual’s lifestyle. Your vet will be able to tell you the ideal weight for your pet and can produce a tailored plan to burn off those calories. In dogs, longer, more frequent walks and ball games will help to reduce weight. Cats often eat when they're bored. To help prevent this certain toys can be used to encourage their playing and moving about more. Another option to consider is getting them a play mate. Rabbits should be given less of the high-energy commercial rabbit food and more good-quality hay and grass. They also like a play and a run in the garden! Here at Danetree my nurses run obesity clinics free of charge and are happy to give advice. The government is currently trying to reduce levels of obesity in the general population. Junk food and lack of exercise is blamed for an increased occurrence of weight related diseases. The same applies to our pets. So get out there and exercise! Combined with a balanced and healthy diet it helps us all live healthier and longer lives. Graham Pursery 01367 242777

aLetl us help you on your way to breaking the Yo-Yo dieting trap. HeWe know that creating a healthy body is the only way to achieve
long term fat loss. Most diets ignore this fact including calorie restricted diets. As experts in creating healthy fat-burning bodies we know that protein, natural fat, leafy green vegetables and colourful berries make us feel full and give us nutrition – essential for a healthy body. • Man-made sugary foods give us energy but no nutrition leaving us unsatisfied so we eat more of it. We store the excess energy as fat and gain weight • Then we try to diet by reducing what we eat • But we still don’t give our body nutrition so we feel unsatisfied and hungry • Then we rely on willpower to fight the urge to eat • But our body is starving so it fights back stronger and makes us eat – we are born to survive not to starve • In the battle of your body versus your willpower, your willpower will always lose! So traditional calorie restriction diets are almost impossible to stick to • Are you that yo-yo dieter? • So what’s the alternative? Eat nutritious foods and not man-made sugary substitutes that give us energy but no nutrition Healthy eating and fat burning exercise will help you to lose weight, tone and enhance your shape and burn fat even whilst at rest. So what is the first step? Next month we will give you a simple guide to get you started on your way to long term weight loss. Food & wine in itself is an interesting subject. Get it right and you create a harmonious REVIEWS sensory experience, enhancing the flavours of both food and wine. Get it wrong and the result can lead to flavours that grate against each other. Given the expanse of the various cuisines in our midst, the task can be somewhat daunting. From my non-scientific background, I have neither the time nor inclination to learn theories of taste compounds etc but adopt a weight and flavour approach. Put simply, light wines match light foods and heavier wines marry with heavier foods. Take, for example, a subtle and delicate fish such as sole and partner it with a refreshing, light, crisp white wine such as sauvignon blanc. A meatier fish like monkfish would pair very well with a white wine of fuller body, such as a buttery Chardonnay. Moving forward on the weight scale, a barbecued rib eye steak would dominate a light red such as gamay or pinot noir, but would stand up to the primary fruit and cracked pepper flavour profile of an Australian shiraz. The flavour aspect of this theory simply pin-points the wine according to the main flavour profile of the dish with which it is to be served, highlighted in the last example. Pork fillet in a creamy mushroom sauce would pair well with a lightly oaked chardonnay, whereas a pork based casserole with tomato sauce would taste amazing with a southern French wine with herbaceous aromas and flavours such as Fitou or I have also paired it with Chianti and it worked a treat. All in all, the best way to approach food and wine matching is to note the distinctive aroma, flavour and weight profile when tasting a wine and start imagining what the wine could accompany in the food world. Practice makes perfect and before long, you’ll be making fabulous matches of your own!

Oxfordshire Artweeks has become an annual tradition in Great Coxwell, involving the whole community. Villagers are asked to bake cakes and quiches for the café, the church is open with its floral arrangements and plant stall and children from the village attend art workshops, the results of which are on show in the Reading Room café. Sixteen local artists working in a wide variety of media will exhibit their work in five different venues in the village. This year you will be able to see painting, drawing, photography, stone carving, ceramics, green woodworking, handmade books, jewellery and blacksmithing. Artweeks catalogues covering the whole of Oxfordshire will be available as well as an Art Trail map to guide you from the magnificent Great Barn, down through the village to the 12th century church of St. Giles. You can meet and talk to the artists and watch them demonstrate their skills. Oxfordshire Artweeks in Great Coxwell will be open for visitors from 11.00am. to 5.30pm. on the weekends of the 19th/20th and 26th/27th May. Delicious coffees, lunches and teas will be available in the Reading Room cafe with proceeds shared between the village park, Reading Room and St. Giles Church. Restaurant Review The Radnor Arms - Coleshill 32 Coleshill, Oxfordshire SN6 7PR www.radnorarmsoleshill.co.uk Tel: 01793 861575 If you are looking for excellent food, friendly service and value for money, the Radnor Arms in Coleshill delivers in abundance. This National Trust country inn is steeped in history, having been an old smithy until the late 1940’s, evidence of which is still on show in the old forge dining area. We chose starters of chicken liver parfait with toast and garnish and king prawns marinated in coriander with lemon oil and sweet chilli mayonnaise. Followed by pan fried lime tuna steak with new potatoes and salad and pork steaks marinated in cider & apple sauce, with sautéed potatoes and green beans. The table service was very good, the food tasted delicious and the portion sizes more than generous. The dessert board offers a nice range of homemade puddings; sadly neither of us had room left to give these a try. Maybe next time we will forgo the starters as the couple on the table opposite went overboard about them. The Radnor Arms has its own on site micro brewery,( The Old Forge Brewery) real ale has never been my thing, but I have to say the Hammer & Tongs served from the cask was beautiful and I have been converted! There is a lovely outside eating area for those (hopefully) sunny, barmy evenings, good size car park and a children’s play area to accommodate young families. A truly traditional pub offering a warm welcome and a great night out!

Just a few months to go until the Faringdon Festival. The aim, as always, is to promote the town and this year we are marketing the festival outside of Faringdon. In addition to the Market Place music over the weekend, there will be a number of activities going on until 8.00pm at the new Skate park. There will be the usual large stage in the town centre and live music from 7pm Friday until 6pm on the Sunday. There will be more for the kids to do in the town centre this year too, with an array of stalls in the market place. Oxford Playhouse will be entertaining our 3-6 year olds on the Sunday with two actors and plenty of rubber ducks. Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust and the Helen & Douglas House will be running a colouring competition and other children's activities. The i-cafe will also be putting on competitions for all age groups. They are hoping to arrange a ball pool and other activities. Faze will be showing film footage in the i-cafe’s large back room during the festival. The Snooty Mehmaan has sponsored the festival and will be providing a range of traditional Indian Street Foods and giving cookery demonstrations.
