MO D UL E 0 1 A DIGITAL STILL LIFE

The basic techniques of 3D modelling and compositions are the main focal points of this module. Real life object photographs are used as the basis of 3D modelling, which involves accurate material and texture applications to objects in order to achieve realistic details. Through the use of elements arrangements, compositions, lighting and camera set ups, a narrative is set up leading towards the next module. A selection of images below show close up images of the objects, with attention to details in materials, textures and lighting.

MO D UL E 0 2 THE LIVED-IN ROOM

Module 02 focuses on creating a narrative and atmosphere for a lived-in room through the use of camera set ups, lighting, materials, perspectives and composition. A list of clients were provided in order to curate the interior render accordingly. The interior render depicts the life of a white-collar, business man who works for a fictional firm in Miami. The room depicted in the render is his “secret room where he commits heinous crimes ranging from murders to cannibalism. Aside from being a stereotypical rich person who enjoys drugs and other substances, he also enjoys collecting human body parts. These irrational actions stem from his constant substance abuse, the divorce of his parents at a young age, and neglect from his father prior to the divorce. Due to his childhood trauma, he frequently doubts his sanity and expresses extreme hatred for his colleagues, especially men, within his social circle. Below is a series of images throughout the scene that contributes to the overall narrative explained above.

MO D UL E 0 3 BUILDING THE WORLD

Module 03 emphasizes on storytelling through the use of animation. Within a 90 seconds timeframe, a narrative is meant to be explored through the techniques employed from the previous modules and an exterior render used as the promotional film poster. The animation film, “DELUSION” is a surrealist take on the concept of a person’s fear within the public space. This may be rational or irrational, with the use of the “eyeballs” as a symbolism of how we perceive our reality and embody our personal experiences within a space. The idea of mirrored image further illustrates individual perceptions; everyone experiences anxiety depending on circumstances and it is innately humane to reflect on our fears and see it as a distorted reality.

MO D UL E 0 3 INSPIRATION & PROCESS

The inspiration behind this animation film stems from my personal love for surrealism in art, films and music. Personally, surrealism is more than a compilation of imageries or objects that do not make sense but rather expressing the abstract or irrational subjects. Major inspirations behind the idea of “DELUSION” were David Lynch, Salvador Dalí and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor. Lynch’s TWIN PEAKS is referenced graphically through the use of red curtains, checkered tiled floors and the statues of Venus De Medici and Venus De Milo, similar to The Red Room. The idea of doppleganger and mirrored distorted world in the series serves as the basis of my animation concept. However, a surrealist piece tends to be fragmented and illogical but the uses of humans, lightings and camera works usually tie it all together. This later helps form the idea of using a first person perspective to capture the emotional experiences within the animation. Salvador Dalí, the famous surrealist painter most notably known for his 1931’s THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY, inspires the ideas of eyeballs. In his 1929 collaborative work with Spanish director Luis Buñuel’s UN CHIEN ANDALOU (An Andalusian Dog) is a film that depicts Freudian free association theory in an illogical dream sequence. The famous scene of an eyeball getting slit provides the idea of protagonist, that helps lead my animation narrative along with the aforementioned Lynch-ian cinematography. Trent Reznor, frontman of the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails (NIN), is known for composing numerous soundtracks for films such as Lynch’s LOST HIGHWAY, THE SOCIAL NETWORK and BIRDBOX. His approach to introspective and emotive ambience juxtaposes with the aggresive use of electronic instruments. Trent’s music score serves as the inspiration behind the post-editting of my animation film, particularly referencing NIN’s 1994’s music video for CLOSER. The use of vintage 8mm film stock adds the graininess and textures to the rendered images, giving the film a bit more character and adding more layers to the surrealist concept.

MO D UL E 0 3 KEY IMAGES & STORYBOARD

The animation film can be broken down into six key images below. The animation starts off lamp, cigarettes and coffee shot, with the composition being centered in the frame. Symmetry is associated with perfection and tends to be unsettling, a contrast to the tone of the animation. Within the hallway scene, Venus De Milo is used as a leading object repeatedly, providing a sense of being trapped within a confined space. The painting of THE SCREAM by Edvard Munch and an interpretation of THE SCREAM, taken from Witness To The Bizarre (a comic zine cover which depicts a clown imitating the Scream with the painting itself in the background) can be seen in the background. Venus De Milo’s facial expression changes, building on the idea of distorted reality in contrast to the statue seen in the shot before. The eyeballs become an intergral part of the animation in the later half, as seen in the hotel lobby and the exterior scenes. The lamp shot again serves as a transition between the exterior and the interior, with the protagonist of the animation eventually seeing itself in the mirror’s reflection at the end.
