Schematic de S ign i ntroduction

Following T he com P le T ion of the Programming Phase, the design team has focused on the development of Schematic Design. The objective has been to strengthen the architectural concepts initiated in the 2005 Project Triangle competition, while developing the most efficient approach for l’oréal. we have designed a project that reveals a strong potential for development going forward into Design Development.

The focus of our design has been to combine an approach to laboratory efficient design, which is a specific response to the program developed with l’ o réal to create an environment that promotes collaboration and creativity. The design also recognizes l’ o réal’s commitment to sustainability and the well-being and health of employees and clients.

The laboratory approach is efficient and flexible. The lab modules allow for change and modification over time, with minimal interruption to ongoing research and support activities. a ll labs are oriented to the north to provide access to natural north light, while concentrating support functions to optimize their adjacencies to the research labs.

The formal bending of the bars to touch one another creates opportunities to introduce public spaces that will aid in establishing a culture that promotes interaction, collaboration and communication.

The approach to landscape is consistent with the architectural theme of integration and is a direct outgrowth from the banding of the building.

T he S i T e i S locaT e D along the highly used state highway, route 1, which is both an asset and a challenge. it is an asset because of the ease of access and high visibility, but also a challenge, because of noise.

The site is very large and quite flat. its suburban context led us to question the traditional approach to siting a building of this type: a large centrally located building, surrounded by a sea of parking. instead, we have developed a series of bars and layers, an outgrowth of the lab concept, which extend themselves into the landscape, integrating building and landscape, while locating parking within the structure of the bands. The site will become a visual amenity for l’oréal and the surrounding community, creating a campus atmosphere. The berm along the route 1 has two functions. it will provide acoustic protection from the noise of the highway and it will create a sense of privacy for the landscape and building.

The completion of programming and careful architectural planning has allowed for further reductions in the overall size of the building. The narrowing of the width of the lab module from 11’-0” to 10’-6” has reduced the building size by 11.4% (27,385 square feet) and we have eliminated the external energy plant, locating it on the first floor of the south bar, adjacent to shipping and receiving.

During schematic design there has been significant progress in many important aspects of the project design. These include:

• building module reduced to 21’x69’ from the original 22’x 75’.

• b uilding sections express the integration of architecture and program, and optimize light and space in the research environment.

• r ationalized circulation organization give order by reducing circulation and placing main staff circulation along façades.

• l inear character of the building attenuated by visual and physical connections to natural light and the landscape.

• i mproved visual and physical connections between labs and support areas.

• i mproved flexibility allows conversion of administrative and lab support area into labs in the future.

• r efinement of public spaces to improve employee interaction and communication.

• i mproved sectional connections between first and second floor public spaces and main circulation routes.

• Structural approach allows reduced steel tonnage and promotes optimized integration of building structure with mechanical systems .
