Arnolfini has been celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2011. It has been an amazing year, filled with fittingly experimental exhibitions and performances, which culminated in a weekend of special events in September. Thanks to everyone for all their kind words and support. Arnolfini's mission is to foster artistic experiment and engagement across the contemporary arts. Since its foundation in 1961, it has always been future-facing, championing new art and new ideas, while at the same time seeking to make contemporary art accessible for as many people as possible. We are delighted to have welcomed more than 450,000 visitors through our doors over the course of the year. As 2011 comes to a close, we present the final part of our year-long project series, The Apparatus, exploring the workings of the art system, with the exhibition Museum Show Part 2. The second instalment of this major survey of museums created by artists features, amongst others, the Palestinian Museum of Natural History & Humankind by Khalil Rabah and the Museum of Incest by Simon Fujiwara. The exhibition kicks off with a performance lecture by Walter Benjamin, which should not be missed. This will also be your last chance to participate in the Full Moon Orchestra and to hear the outcomes of the Danceroom Spectroscopy workshops.

The New Year begins with some suitably invigorating live art and dance, with a three week residency by Laïla Diallo, developing a new work, and Darkin Ensemble's riotous DisGo. The blurring of boundaries between audience and performer continues with Monica Ross's mass recital of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the return of Bristol Live Open Platform, presenting some of the most exciting new, emerging performance from Bristol's thriving live art community.

Palestinian Museum of Natural History and Humankind (Khalil Rabah), Danger Museum (Øyvind Renberg & Miho Shimizu), The Museum of American Art, Museo Salinas (Vicente Razo), Museum of Non-Participation (Karen Mirza & Brad Butler), Museum of Television Culture (Jaime Davidovich), Victoria and Alferd Museum (Åbäke), Hu Xiangqian's Museum (Hu Xiangqian), Museum of Forgotten History (Maarten Vanden Eynde), Museum of Incest (Simon Fujiwara). Following on from Part 1, we present the second chapter of Museum Show, a major historical survey of museums created by artists. Museum Show is a comprehensive selection of these highly idiosyncratic, semi-fictional institutions - a 'museum of museums' perhaps. It is the first ever exhibition to chart this particular tendency in contemporary art. Museum Show Part 2 presents an ambitious series of installations, including; The Museum of American Art, charting the dominance of American art and ideologies in the 20th century, and Khalil Rabah's Palestinian Museum of Natural History and Humankind reconsiders the 'ethnographic' framings of non-Western cultures in museums. Museo Salinas by Vicente features a baroque and delirious collection of Mexican memorabilia, plastic toys, piñatas, masks, stickers, clothing,

and other items related to the controversial image of Mexico's ex-president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, derided for his corruption. Museum Show Part 2 is the final exhibition as part of Arnolfini's 50th anniversary programme. As part of this year-long 50th anniversary programme, Arnolfini has worked with the research theme of The Apparatus, reflecting on the conditions of the art system today.

The renowned theorist Walter Benjamin will give a lecture about the birth of art and art institutions. It will discuss where, why and how certain ideas of art - museums, galleries, exhibitions, artist and artwork originated, and how they have developed over the last five centuries. In his thesis, the notion of art is not a universal category or something that is characteristic for all cultures, but a specific concept that appeared in the Western world during the period called the Enlightenment.

NEIL CUMMINGS SELF PORTRAIT: ARNOLFINI UNTIL 19 FEB FREE
A relational timeline traces the presence of Arnolfini through three colours: pale blue representing the history of art and Arnolfini, purple for technological innovation, and olive green for social and financial organisation. Starting from the Bristol Riots of 1831, the timeline follows Arnolfini's expansion as it relocates from Triangle West to Queen Square and then to W-shed (now Watershed), before arriving at its current location in Bush House in 1975. The timeline ends on the second floor where the data becomes highly speculative, imagining what might unfold in the coming decades. Neil Cummings is a professor at Chelsea College of Art and Design. He is a member of Critical Practice, a cluster of artists, researchers and academics, and is resident at Arnolfini throughout 2011. Over the course of Arnolfini's 50th anniversary year, artist Neil Cummings has developed a series of self portraits of the organisation. Presented throughout the building, these portraits trace Arnolfini's history and speculate on possible futures.

During summer 2011 Arnolfini presented Danceroom Spectroscopy - a series of workshops and events which combined cutting edge 3D imaging technologies with physics, dance, generative digital art, soundscapes, and choreography. Led by researcher Dr David Glowacki from the University of Bristol, Danceroom Spectroscopy conjured up an environment for trained dancers to test out new forms of contemporary choreography. Arnolfini audiences also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a playful audiovisual experience built on the rigorous mathematics of theoretical science. Join David Glowacki and guests to share the story of the project, discuss the observations made during these experiments, and consider where it might go. Bristol-based choreographer Laïla Diallo is currently developing a new work, a piece for five performers and live music. The piece will be performed at Arnolfini on 5 April, and throughout its development Laïla is offering opportunities to access and participate in her process.

Level: Intermediate/Advanced Laïla will lead a series of contemporary dance classes that will gradually move from the floor to standing, offering first an opportunity to awaken senses and focus on connections through the body, before learning more complex movement phrases, moving through space, playing with flow and dynamic range.

At the close of the three-week residency at Arnolfini - and at an early stage in the creation of a new work - Laïla opens the doors of the studio to invite an audience to watch a rehearsal. There will be no performance for the occasion, no special demonstration or explanation, but an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the creative process. The creation is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and commissioned and produced by ROH2 at the Royal Opera House, with support from Arnolfini, Dance South West/Pavilion Dance and ICIA, University of Bath. www.lailadiallo.com

Arnolfini is inviting people from across Bristol to take part in a collective recitation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with artist Monica Ross on 17 Feb. Learn a small part of the Declaration and recite it in public, in your own language, as part of this unique performance. Everyone is welcome.

MONICA ROSS AND CO-RECITORS ANNIVERSARY - AN ACT OF MEMORY FRI 17 FEB 7.30pm Free Anniversary - an act of memory is a performance series in 60 acts focusing on the importance and relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Launched in December 2008 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Declaration, it features solo, collective and multi-lingual recitations from memory of the entire UDHR by Monica Ross and Co-Recitors. Each recitation is uniquely shaped by the producers and co-recitors who deliver it. The emphasis is not on perfect recall, but on the attempt to remember and the difficulty of fulfilling the Declaration's call to keep it 'constantly in mind,' especially when under pressure. This recitation is part of the Anniversary - an act of memory UK Tour 2011 - 2013 and supported by Arts Council England. www.actsofmemory.net

Urbanized is the third part of Gary Hustwit's design film trilogy, joining Helvetica and Objectified. This new feature-length documentary about the design of cities, looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design. Over half the world's population now lives in an urban area, and 75% will call a city home by 2050. The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns. Yet much of the dialogue on these issues is disconnected from the public domain. Who is allowed to shape our cities, and how do they do it? By exploring a diverse range of urban design projects around the world, Urbanized frames a global discussion on the future of cities. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT (PG) & THE REFEREES (12A) SUN 11 DEC 2.30pm As part of the Autumn Art Lecture series we present a special double bill of soccer-related movies that combine strong visual imagery with a passion for the beauty and controversy of sporting practice. With Zidane (2006), artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno offer a compelling vision of one of football's most creative characters, using seventeen cameras focused exclusively on Zidane, to produce a mesmerising and hypnotic cinematic portrait. In a similar vein, Yves Hinant's newly-released fly-onthe-wall documentary, The Referees (2009), offers an in-depth study of the people we all love to hate. FEATURED PROJECT
MARTIN PARR Arnolfini is currently working with a number of external partners to deliver projects across the City. One such project features Magnum photographer Martin Parr photographing an academic year in the life of St Mary Redcliffe and Temple school, documenting their transition to a new building and in so doing developing a unique relationship with the pupils, staff and their environment. This commission is part of Bristol City Councils public art programme. The project will showcase Parr's photographs as large scale prints in the school. Images from this extraordinary record will also be published in a newspaper which will be distributed across the city throughout December 2011.

Sabine Hornig is a German artist based in Berlin who's work explores the shifting relationships between humans and the urban context. Central to her practice is a blurring of the boundaries between photography and sculpture, in the context of architecture, which are all employed in her work to establish an indeterminate zone between reality and image. Sabine will talk about her arts practice and her new commission in Bristol.
Nathaniel Mellors wed 15 Feb The complex relationship between language and power is a recurring theme in Nathaniel Mellors' multi-faceted work, typically manifesting itself in absurdist, humorous narratives that reveal a penchant for satire and the grotesque. Parodying the formats and structures through which information is popularly conveyed, Mellors sets up theatrical frameworks to test the line between meaningful content and incomprehensibility. At the core of his practice lies a fascination with the relationship between word and effect.
Matt Stokes WED 22 Feb Matt Stokes' practice stems from a long-term inquiry into subcultures, particularly focusing on how music acts as a catalyst for groups to form, shaping and influencing people's lives and identities. His works are often made by immersing himself in a setting through which collaborations with informal communities arise. After collecting information related to their histories and values, Stokes produces artworks that depart from this research and take on a life of their own, through films, installations and events.

S MARK GUBB WED 29 FEB S Mark Gubb is a British artist who works across a range of media incorporating sculpture, video, sound, installation and performance. The subjects for his work are drawn from the social and political culture he grew up in; an equal fascination with things he finds so great and so terrible about the world we live in. This often takes the form of a re-evaluation and re-interpretation of contemporary culture and history, provoking us to consider our contribution to the world we live in. He will talk about his practice and new commission in Bristol.

The Gane Trust, in partnership with the Architecture Centre and Arnolfini present a lecture by Rik Nys,senior director of award winning David Chipperfield Architects. Having worked with David Chipperfield for the last 20 years, Rik Nys been involved in all of the practice's projects, including museum projects such as the Stirling Prize winning Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach and most recently the Museum Folkwang in Essen. The MA Performance Writing in partnership with University College Falmouth is a cross-artform Masters degree which investigates 21st century modes of writing. It examines how writing collides or collaborates with other art forms - visual, sonic, digital, performative, time-based, sited/installed, page-based - in the context of contemporary culture and new technologies. This course is practice-led and lasts one year full-time or two years part-time. We are currently recruiting for the academic year 2012-13. Bookshop Showcase Dec-Feb Visual Editions London-based publisher Visual Editions (VE) believes that books should be as interesting as the stories that they tell. VE is all about a love of books and the desire to do things differently so that everything they do translates into a new experience for their readers and for the writers and designers that they work with. Sue Gregor: Fossilized Plastic Bristol based jeweller Sue Gregor takes her interest in the natural world as the starting point for the creation of her work. She seeks to create a fusion of the industrial and organic. Each piece is unique, with the fine detail of the original material, often quite ordinary plants and weeds, 'fossilized' on its surface using an individual method of dying and embossing .
