Teaching Statement::

dawnhouser

Teaching design is one of my favorite challenges. As graphic designers, we have to learn to unsee what we think we see and retrain ourselves to see what is really there, or has the possibility of being there. My teaching style is a laid-back “Let’s roll up our sleeves and play with this project.” Design should be a creative process for solutions to a problems or projects. I expect this process to be fun that is backed up with hardwork. The strongest design students are the ones that might not be the best designers at the beginning of the race, but they are the ones who work hard, get frustrated with their self-imposed limitations, start the project over and push their way to finish triumphantly. Each semester, I look forward to getting to know my students. The tone of my classroom is more of a work laboratory where we try new possibilities and concepts until we have that “A-ha!” moment. In my teaching, I have found no higher reward than to hear one of my students say “Oh, now I see.”
