LAST C.A.L.L DAWSON COLLEGE 2014 - 2016
studio arts
LET ME INTRODUCE YOU... This exhibition and catalogue defines a culmination of two years of study reaching a crescendo of intense creative activity. These students have collectively and individually helped orchestrate this last celebratory event. By drawing on all their learning and experience they have reached their goal - a great achievement – and a final CALL. To witness this has been the delight of their Integrating Activity teachers. We can only wish all these students the very best in all their future endeavors with the knowledge that they have been irresistibly drawn into a world where creativity flourishes and motivates us all to further participate in an expanding world of thought and ideas. - Antoinetta Grassi and Michael Smith -
I BELIEVE THAT POURING YOUR HEART AND SOUL OUT INTO YOUR PASSION AND DEVOTION IS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY FOR YOURSELF, BUT FOR THE AUDIENCE THAT ADMIRES IT. IN THE PAST TWO YEARS, THE STUDIO ARTS ARTISTS HAVE NOT ONLY EVOLVED AS ARTISTS, But as human beings. FROM CREATING MARVELLOUS MASTERPIECES TO THE FLOW OF ADAPTING TO NEW ENVIRONMENTS, we WANT thank our professors who have enlightened us with the beauty of knowledge and artwork we never new existed. NEVER FORGET THAT YOUR ART BEATS STRONG, JUST LIKE YOUR MARK IN THE WORLD. - Despina Daniilidis -

despina daniilidis Ink embedded, I believe that art is our true form of survival. There seems to be an impending storm of breathtaking, beautiful authenticity which gnaws at the deepest strings of my precious soul, still, even when exhausted. With the spark of neutral culture, artist’s souls are awake and gathering. It’s no line in a play but a takeoff into what revolution is; how else would I have written this poem for you? Hover and never contemplate your endeavours. We are in a period of decadence until the seams burst, which is when I say, break the shackles.

EMILY GILMOUR Before coming to Dawson College I did not see myself as an artist whatsoever, until fall of 2013 when I had my first few painting and drawing classes. Dawson has made me discover so much about myself including my creative side which I have seen blossom throughout the years. This school has truly allowed me to find my ambition.

emma trinci As titled this series was all about exploration. I explored different mediums of acrylic paint and explored a new style and technique through these five works. The five canvases were treated as one and then separated at the end of the process. What I enjoyed most about creating these works is letting go of control. Paint is a wonderful material that has a mind of its own. In this series I allowed the paint to take control of the canvas and then let my mind just take in the beauty. “Art is the lie that allows us to realize the truth.” Pablo Picasso

FATMA BEDOUI Astrology is seen as rubbish and a lot of people are skeptic about it since they believe astrology isn’t rational. Yet little do they know about it. I was one of does skeptic too until I’ve informed myself more about my own chart and the concepts itself which lead curiosity to eventually knowing more. My point here is that people perceive astrology bogus because they are misinformed about it and astrology can extend to even spiritual beliefs and ideologies Furthermore, my intentions behind Astro Lovers is to present two Sun signs from opposite elements, yet are still compatible although they are usually known as signs that are not attracted to one another. I’ve chosen specifically the Ram (Aries) and the Goat (Capricorn) as the subjects used for inspiration from my own relationship and friendships.

STEFAN LAMONTANGECUMIFORD As a digital artist, I am interested in the ways that our bodies interact with technology. I don’t view the internet as inherently worse than a non-cyber space; after all, every digital persona is attached to a physical body and mind. I like to explore the use of saturated color, early web aesthetics and themes present in sci-fi movies (bladerunner, the matrix, star wars and 2001: a space odyssey are among my favorites) as well as feminist theory to create my digital paintings that reflect my opinions on identity, capitalism, sexuality and mental illness. “moonlight shadow” 16 x 20 acrylic on paper

“Keep It Simple”
TANNER MANERA I think that my artwork is something pretty cool and fun in a way and I think that it represents me quite well. I’m someone who loves fashion, especially what is trendy at the moment and what represents me. I consider myself as someone who likes to be in the city, being with my friends and wandering around downtown and consider my style as ‘urban’. I feel like my experience at Dawson is something that I will never forget. As cheesy as it may sound, I have met a lot of amazing and talented people throughout these past semesters and definitely had pretty awesome teachers as well.

ALIVIA LYNCH My piece is a representation of the loss history and identity of the black community. And shows that we have no trace of the root of our identity and how we are “Lost in Space”and is a comment on how it can hurt the future generations to come.

ANN SZE You’ve been my companion since the day I held my first crayon. You’ve kept me company growing up, and helped me grow into the individual I am today. Although I still have much to learn, I know that you will be there to teach, guide, and inspire me, like you did for others across time, and many around the world. You give people a way to express themselves. You make life beautiful because you allow the ugly to be seen. Thank you.

Issac Alberto-Schmidt At first I wanted to do a self-portrait about myself, at the time I was going through some strange feelings do to school, relationship, etc. but then those feelings went away but I was stuck with a painting that was reflecting how I felt at the beginning of this project, so I decided to revisit some of my older work that I had made in my previous sketchbooks and decided to incorporate some of these elements on my canvas creating some kind of playground for my imagination.
“Playground 30 X 40 acrylic/aerosol

JERI ANN MIRANDA Art as a whole is a complete depiction of your imagination and your perspective of it. It’s a freedom of speech through the use of imagery that expresses who you may be as an individual, or how you would like others to perceive you as. There are no boundaries in art, no limits of creativity and is your chance to be free. “Murder Is Beautiful” four 4 X 7 papers, mixed with frames

Jessica Boulos I decided to represent the 7 deadly sins with 7 Hollywood stars. The stars that I chose are not necessarily known for the sin that they are matched with. I have chosen them for what I feel they exude as a person.
“Luxury 10 X 24 Pencil/Mixed Paper
38
KAJOL PATEL My painting is an abstract self representation of myself. I wanted to use bold colours to represent the blur of emotions that I feel everyday and that make up my personality.

“Colours 36 X 30 acrylic

41
KASHANTI SANDY My piece is about how the audience can allow themselves to be captivated by space and enter the artist’s dimension. I also feel there is a lot to gain from simplicity, and you allow this to happen when each colour is allowed the opportunity to exist within its own space without the need for comparison. I hope you enjoy it. “Division of Red, Yellow & Blue” mixed media installation

NICOLAS MARTIN It’s extraordinary how we can create a physical manifestation of parts of our mind through mediums such as paint, pencil, music, clay and so on. When I create, I almost seem to use the wrong senses but that doesn’t really matter when it comes to art. You can really just let yourself go, and in doing so, what you can achieve has no boundaries. “Gargoyle Head” 13 X 13 X 16 mixed media
44
ROSALIE BOVIN I love to create magic with my own hands. That’s why I do art. Whether by drawing, painting, sculpting or playing music. I have always been interested in the strange and the unknown, fantasy world and dreams. That’s where I get most of my inspiration. For me, art is not only to express an idea but to create something unexpected that nobody could think of, something personal and unique to oneself.
45
“Empty Fairytale” 22 X 28 acrylic/collage

47
SHAWNA DOBBS Art is always there for me when I need some peace and quiet, and a break from things that are going on in my life, or myself. Art lets me get lost and live in the in-between for a while and I don’t know what I would do without it.
“I’ve seen more spine in jellyfish” 46 X 14 X 14 mixed media

YOHANNY TIM For this project, I really wanted to challenge myself, so I decided to create an atmospheric scenery using a medium that I’m not really used to and nothing but my imagination as a source.

THIS IS JUST TO SAY... I think we can speak on behalf of all the graduates, that Dawson has shapped us into the artists we are today. The Studio Art program has given us the oppertunity to express ourselves and find our love for art. Throughout these two years we have made unbreakable bonds and have discovered who we are. This exhibition respresents who we are as artists and is a glimpse of what is to come. - Emma Trinci and Shawna Dobbs -
