DAY BY DAY
by Susan Swindell DayLet Your Kids Do the Heavy Lifting
The adults around me are lugging everything to the beach. Dads pull these big-wheel wagons or carts loaded to the brim with everything for their families. Moms carry giant Bogg bags as their kids lag slowly behind them, empty-handed. What’s wrong with this picture? Why do we treat our kids as if they are veal? Why aren’t we building kids who do for us what we do for them?
It’s a metaphor for parenting: I will do the heavy lifting, you don’t have to, you only need to do the bare minimum. What? Kids can’t pull the wagon over the sand? Yes they can. They can couple up with Dad, or if they’re big enough, do a few feet themselves. We’ve got to stop doing for our kids what they can and should do for themselves!
And that goes for homework and the upcoming school year, too. News flash, moms: If you do the heavy lifting for your kids, they will never learn how to lift! Kids can and must do things for themselves, they are not frail and useless creatures completely dependent on you for everything and if they are, then you made them that way. The jokes on you if you think that all of the excesses that you provide are actually beneficial to your kids. Toughen up! It’s bad for you (you get exhausted), bad for them (they learn nothing) and bad for the world (enabling parents are everywhere, all the way up to the White House). It’s time to reclaim your life, transfer responsibilities to your kids so that they can grow confident and strong — and away from you — and start enjoying the parenting trail a bit more.
Yes, your kids need to grow away from you. It’s what they are meant to do. They begin doing this the moment they are born. Out of your body they need help to eat, stay clean and get around safely. But they grow quickly and are soon scrambling from your lap — let them. You don’t have to be a slave for your children, you need to be their firm and competent leader. What I’m getting at is expectations: if you give your kids the message that you believe in them and that you expect them to do for themselves, they will. If you give them the message that they can’t do things, they won’t. So raise your expectations and try, very hard as it may be, to get out of the way.
What are some of the things you can expect your kids to do as we head into school days? Get up in the morning by themselves (setting an alarm). Make a bed by themselves (who cares how perfect it is?); brush teeth, comb hair, dress, make a lunch, make a bowl of cereal and eat it, watch the clock and let YOU know when it’s time to leave, not the other way around. Starting at age 5, parenting experts say, kids can do these things! Get out of their way! You’re not a good parent because you do all of that work for them. Just oversee and observe your kids. Smile and lay down a positive atmosphere for the start of what will be a good day. Get over the “I have to do it for my kids because if I don’t, they won’t” mentality. It’s a form of enabling and you need to stop. Just say, “Mom’s leaving, let’s go!” and head to your car and start the engine.
Oh, and if your kid forgets their lunch, don’t take it to them! That’s a service that NO adult anywhere receives. Your kid may go hungry. They will be OK. They will learn not to forget their lunch. See?

believe in your child and set expectations
According to parenting expert Margot Machol Binow, author of Raising an Entrepreneur: How to Help Your Children Achieve Their Dream — 99 Stories From Families Who Did (BookBaby; 2022), it’s important to discuss your hopes and dreams for your child’s education with them early and often. And you must believe in your children and inspire them to dream big.
“All of the parents I interviewed for my book said, “We love you, we trust you,” says Binow. Furthermore, they add, “We believe in you, we support you in whatever you want to do; we encourage you to pursue a passion; we know you’ll do great things; we will always be here for you; and don’t worry if you make mistakes, because you’ll learn from them, and anyhow they’re just bumps on the road to your success.”
By believing in your kids, you help them to believe in themselves. And setting expectations is huge for kids; recognizing their individuality, of course.
TIPS
GIVE YOUR KIDS GOALS TO AIM FOR BY:
• Asking about and listening to your child’s thoughts on the future
• Sharing your hopes for your child’s education such as graduating from college
TELL YOUR CHILD THAT YOU EXPECT:
Give Your Kids the Keys to Success
• They will give school their best e ort and attendance
• They will follow through on tasks such as homework, turning it in on time and studying for tests
• They will pursue education and be a lifelong learner
HELP YOUR KIDS BUILD STUDY SKILLS BY:
• Making studying a priority at home
• Supporting your child with hard assignments
• Keeping reading time high and screen time low
• Telling your child you believe they are capable of doing the school work and then praising any progress
As kids head back to classrooms, unlock your child’s potential with keys to success that include setting expectations, friend-making, encouraging communication with teachers and of course ... balance!
by Susan Day
help kids make and keep friends
Friends are very important to your child’s well-being — just like they are for your’s. Help your child develop friend-making skills beginning from an early age.
Do you make time for friends in your life? Do you invite friends over or meet for coffee? The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that parents who model friendships with others teach their kids invaluable connectivity.
TIPS
• Introduce your kids to others often
• Model reaching out to others and identifying those with whom you “click” + teach your kids about that
• Teach sociability beginning with saying, “Hello,” making eye contact, listening and answering and being friendly
• Teach sharing, taking turns and empathizing
• Encourage your child to invite friends over and to accept invitations for social fun
discover balance so your kids can shine
Many kids are smart and talented with lives stocked with sports and activities. But even with all of that, they can fail to feel like they are “enough.” Having too much on your plate is something many adults can relate to and not in a good way. According to Michele Borba, Ed.D., child development expert and author of 24 books including her newest, Thrivers: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine (GP Putnam; 2021), in order to help your kids thrive with their school load and more, they need the tools to do so.
TIPS
• Identify which activities seem to ignite your child’s joy
• Notice what seems to increase their confidence and what reduces stress and help them to enjoy their own company
• Observe your child ... Is he doing what he wants to do or is he doing what you want him to do? Be honest and adjust
• If your child seems busy but unhappy, sit down together and reevaluate his schedule. Can something be cut? According to Borba, when kids are engaged in purposeful activities, it moves stress down and joy up
teach communication with teachers
Research bears it out: good communications between home and school is related to better grades and attitudes about learning and participation. With each of your child’s teachers, begin with a friendly email introducing yourself and finding out how they prefer to be contacted, says Jessica Lahey, author of The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed (Harper; 2015). As your child grows, learn to transfer communications to them.
TIPS
• If an issue comes up, go to the teacher first, not the principal
• Remember that gratitude matters, so when a teacher makes an effort on behalf of your child, send a thank you
• Don’t say negative things about your kids’ teachers as it undermines their relationship and causes negativity
• Encourage your child to speak up to their teachers as early as kindergarten by coaching them through approaches they can take; role play to make it easier
• Talk to your kids about how you ask for help when you need it, even when it makes you nervous. Tell them that while you’d like to just walk out and not say anything, it’s far better to communicate
• Expect your kids to be a part of the home-to-school communications from the first day of elementary school and increase your expectations each year until your child is the main source of communication. In middle school, your child can take the full lead

Help Kids Use ChatGPT Without Cheating
They say, “if they build it, they will come.” Well, they built it and we’re here — and so are our kids.
Like it or not, ChatGPT is only the beginning of what OpenAI is bringing our kids’ way. The chatbot tool can answer all of your questions, do homework for your kids and lead them into the dark world of plagiarism should a kid dare. It’s the latest issue to test your parent fortitude — and you need to get ahold of it.
If you’re still unitiated, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool that answers questions you ask of it, using the knowledge it has acquired from the internet and from human interaction. ChatGPT can write letters for you, answer simple and complex questions and give you the sense that there’s a human touch in there — although there’s not. Kids need to understand how to use it and you need to help them with that to keep everything on the up and up — especially with school starting. We can all access ChatGPT on our devices and have fun with it or deviate into dangerous territory. That’s why it’s important for you to know what kids are up against. If you haven’t experimented with ChatGPT yet, it’s time you should.
A PROFOUND CHANGE
“ChatGPT is the biggest technological advancement we will see in our lifetime,” says Jules White, associate dean for strategic learning programs and associate professor of computer science at Vanderbilt University, “I would even argue that ChatGPT will have a more profound impact on our lives than the invention of the internet,” he adds.
Thems big words. But to add to his confidence, White has launched a free “Prompt Engineering for Chat GPT” course that anyone can take on coursera.org/learn/prompt-engineering. Get schooled on ChatGPT and find out for yourself.
White believes that ChatGPT is so important everyone will be using it more and more frequently to do things like develop a successful business plan, plan a family vacation or weekly meals or code a mobile app. The possibilities, he says, are endless. They are for your kids, too.
Here are ways children can use ChatGPT safely at home, with you, while you gently remind about the pitfalls of cheating.
(please turn the page)
Chat GPT can compose poetry. It can write computer code. And it can lead good kids to cheat.
Here’s what you need to know at home to keep your family honest.
Ultimately, for a school kid, ChatGPT is sort of like a tutor that is always available. This makes it the most obvious and popular way for kids to take advantage of AI. Kids can learn to use ChatGPT as a tool instead of a crutch, which is where YOU come in. ChatGPT’s conversational tone makes it easy to understand for children — and if you have younger kids, you can even ask the chatbot to explain the answer in terms that a 5-year-old can understand. Here are some ways a child can use ChatGPT as a homework resource:
CREATE OUTLINES
If your child is struggling with writing an essay, they can ask ChatGPT to help write the outline of an essay with the subject they’ve selected. But don’t leave your kid to their own devices; sit with your child and do it together so you can offer guidelines. With repetition, this process can be used as a way to teach kids how to build the outline of an essay and subsequently get them started on their own.
HISTORY LESSONS
ChatGPT isn’t connected to the internet and it has been trained on information and world events leading up to 2021. Kids who need clarification on an historical world event can ask the chatbot and get direct answers more quickly than by searching through different websites with a Google search.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES
ChatGPT is a top-notch language translator, so if your child is curious about a new language, the tool can help them translate text and even explain semantics and grammar in a specific language.
STEM
Similar pinciples hold true for math, science, code and other subjects. Kids can ask ChatGPT questions about different situations (such as, why is the sky blue, or how do I solve this formula?). They can then ask follow-up questions to provide further clarity.
GRAMMAR
IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION
ChatGPT is a great tool for kids who want to ask questions, but it’s also a good way for them to learn to build conversations and learn the importance of expressing themselves clearly. It’s important that children write their prompts (questions) clearly and efficiently, so the message is conveyed successfully to get the most helpful response.
NO CHEATING, KIDS
Plagiarism has always been an issue in education — and it’s even more of a concern now that ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Microsoft’s new Bing are using conversational AI to deliver information.
Protecting Kids From ChatGPT
To remove the “forbidden fruit” allure of ChatGPT, experiment with the chatbot with your kids.
• Explain what it is to your kids
• Look at it together and ask the chatbot a simple question, then discuss the answer. Is it different from a traditional search engine?
• Play with it together. Let your child’s curiosity drive the conversation
• Ask your kids their thoughts on the answers they get
• Talk about how it ChatGPT makes them feel. Chat bots make it seem like we are engaging with a person ... but we’re not
• Remind kids about plagiarism and the importance of doing your own work plus fact-checking
Source: Kristi Bush, national education consultant and social media safety advocate.
Correct grammar is key to effective communication, and it’s also one of the things ChatGPT can model for your child. The technology uses clear and concise language that kids can learn by example, giving appropriate and complete responses to model effective communication.
ICE BREAKERS
A kid can ask ChatGPT to give them ideas for what to say, for instance, to a teacher or to use in helping make new friends, for example, or for tips on how to make small talk or what questions to ask in social settings.
The problem of plagiarism in education has been around since the old-school Encyclopedia Britannicas were used for studying. At that time, teachers would discourage students from copying the text verbatim instead of doing research. Then came tech resources such as Encarta, followed by Google and Wikipedia, and, now, AI tools like ChatGPT.
The concern that a child might simply copy and paste an AI chatbot’s response and try to pass it as their own work is valid — and this is why your supervision is required to ensure they’re using ChatGPT as a learning tool.
ChatGPT and other AI chatbots are trained on a wealth of information available on the web. But this process of knowledge acquisition also exposes ChatGPT to inaccurate information that is available online or that may have been used in training data.
In other words, don’t believe everything you read on the internet, including what is in ChatGPT’s chat window. Your kids should view the answers as a starting point and they should verify the information they receive. This process will help teach your child the importance of doing research and understanding which sources are trustworthy.
IT’S NOT HUMAN
It’s important to remind your kids that AI chatbots aren’t real humans and are incapable of feeling emotions like a person can. The responses a kid receives are based on programmed knowledge and language-processing capabilities, so while chatbots understand questions and can respond accordingly, any emotion you read is simulated. A kid’s real work includes their personality and “voice.” Tell your kids that simulated emotions are easy to detect as not “you.”
ChatGPT is a great way to let kids learn about artificial intelligence resources which are likely to only become more prevalent for future generations. Although there are many precautions that should be put in place before letting a child use the AI chatbot, ChatGPT works exceedingly well to let kids learn, play, explore and access new ideas in simple terms — and you can try and keep them honest while doing it.

“This season highlights where we came from, where we are and where we are going,” Mullikin said in a Nashville Ballet press release. “We are maintaining who we are by creating eight world premieres, and fostering creativity by giving our own artists a place to create,” he adds.
Mullikin’s at the helm of his first World Premiere here in Nashville with “Live in Studio A,” next spring!
