WELCOME Spectacular nature, world-class food and drink experiences, a vibrant artistic community, and our famed wellness offerings are some of what makes the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region popular, year-round.
For tens of thousands of years, Indigenous people have seen the area as a place of gathering and healing. More recently, the wealth driven by the gold rush bestowed upon us some beautiful villages and unique Swiss Italian culture. Another cultural legacy is the ‘makers and creators’; you can join one of many classes and workshops, or buy some beautiful pieces of art. For many though, it is the natural beauty that brings them back again and again. Hiking up Hanging Rock, riding the Goldfields Track, or sampling the

many natural mineral springs are just some of the activities you can do. And after a full day of exploring, why not treat yourself to an amazing meal? The chocolate-brown, metre-deep topsoil that surrounds our old volcanoes grows some of the best potatoes on the planet and lambs so plump they almost roll around the paddocks. The historic villages in the region are home to some of the best restaurants in the state from fine dining establishments to family friendly cafés and wineries. This superbly fertile farmland gives way to the granite country of the ranges, where massive boulders are strewn like giants’ marbles. This hard but beautiful country makes the grapevines concentrate their aroma into fewer intensely flavoured grapes, hence our award-winning cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and sparkling

Blanc de Noir. We don’t have big businesses dominating our wine industry, just families making wine in old woolsheds, 18th century bluestone buildings and brand spanking new, architecturally designed cellar doors. With such great produce it’s no wonder that some of the nation’s best artisan bakers, cheesemakers, charcutiers and even boutique vegetable growers have planted roots and opened their doors across the Daylesford Macedon region. Pack a picnic rug, bring a few glasses and come and spend some time with us exploring the glorious countryside and making a few new friends.

The Goldfields Track is an historic point to point 210 km track stretching from Ballarat in the south to Bendigo in the north, through some of the region’s most historic towns and beautiful forests, including Creswick, Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Castlemaine. The track was constructed by gold settlers over 150 years ago and today is well known amongst cyclers and walkers. The Wallaby Track section will take you from Mount Buninyong through to Daylesford.

Mount Macedon’s greatness is visible from all parts of this region. Known as Geburrh in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people. Today, Mount Macedon is home to some of the country’s most magnificent historic and private gardens. It is also crowned by the historic Memorial Cross, which each ANZAC Day plays host to one of the largest and most moving dawn services in Victoria.
A short drive to the village of Macedon brings you to the spectacular Honour Avenue, with its magnificent oaks that honour the 154 local men and women of Macedon and Mount Macedon who enlisted for service during the First World War. Not far from Mount Macedon is the ethereal and iconic Hanging Rock (Ngannelong), made famous in the classic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock, adapted from the novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay. However, while the film raised awareness of ‘the rock’, it has been a place of great significance to Indigenous groups for millennia. It is located near the traditional boundary between three Aboriginal tribal groups – the Woi Wurrung (Wurundjeri), the Dja Dja Wurrung and the Taungurung. Each has its own perspectives and stories, but evidence suggests that the group were highly inter-connected and it is clear that Ngannelong was a sacred place for all three groups and was used for ceremonies, meditations, and initiations for at least 26,000 years…possibly more like 40,000. The nearby village of Woodend is a perfect staging post to explore this area further with its enticing mix of cafés, stores and
the famous Holgate Brewhouse, where a drop of ale is just the thing. The local Visitor Information Centre has the latest information on all things worth discovering. Lancefield is at the geographic heart of Victoria, and whilst modern day fossicking is encouraged in the local galleries, antique stores and more, it’s also the place for anyone with an interest in something a tad older. Did you know that a wealth of important paleontological finds have been unearthed here from extinct megafauna including Macropus titan (a kangaroo-like animal twice the size of today’s largest relative) and Diprotodon (a rhinoceros-sized wombat lookalike)? Outdoor pursuits are in abundance here, with a rousing round of golf at the Gisborne Golf Course under the gaze of the grazing kangaroos, highly recommended. Find out more: visitmacedonranges.com

Out & About Camels Hump The Camels Hump is the highest point in the Macedon Ranges (1,001 metres), with a lookout offering visitors spectacular views. This is one of three local rocky outcrops formed by volcanic action millions of years ago and is generally quieter than Hanging Rock. Your dog is welcome too. Start of Cameron Drive, Mount Macedon
Conglomerate Gully Walk Riddells Creek’s best kept secret, Conglomerate Gully is a magnificent rocky gorge, estimated to be about 440 million years old. The 2.8 km walk will weave you through a hilly eucalypt forest with native grasslands and orchids in the spring time. The track is steep and rocky in parts. Wheelwrights Road, Riddells Creek
Hanging Rock Reserve Hanging Rock, formed six million years ago, is said to be one of the best examples in the world of a volcanic feature known as a mamelon. The reserve offers many great experiences such as walks up the rock, Australian native wildlife, picnic areas, an annual film night under the stars, horse racing and concerts. Romsey Village A pretty spot to visit with an eclectic mix of food, wine, shopping, history and heritage. Its historic red brick buildings line a spacious main street giving it an English village feel. Surrounding fertile countryside is ideal for

Memorial Cross Travel 4 km along Cameron Drive from the summit of Mount Macedon Road. The 21 metres high Memorial Cross is located 200 metres from the carpark. Murmuring Walk at Sanatorium Lake, Mount Macedon Murmuring Walk is an audio-guided walk reflecting the environment, birdlife and natural rhythms of Sanatorium Lake, Mount Macedon. Participants are invited to wear headphones connected to their personal device and enter a contemplative space as they are led by a sublime multi-layered vocal and poetic soundtrack. Woodend Children’s Park Woodend Children’s Park covers one hectare on the banks of Five Mile Creek. It has an eight metre climbing wall, a breathtaking flying fox, sheltered areas, barbecues, fenced playground for toddlers and space for children to run. 5 Photo-Worthy Locations Local photographer Chris Turner gives us the inside scoop on his favourite places in the region worthy of a photo. There is something about Mount Franklin, it keeps calling me back. It’s an extinct volcano, but it has been planted with many non-native trees like conifers, birch, poplars and redwoods, making it stand out from the surrounding mountains. The terrain, plant and tree coverage are extremely varied, and with the deciduous trees, it changes often throughout the year. Everyone needs to go to Lake Daylesford. It’s probably the mandatory ‘Insta pic’ when you come to stay. The walk around the lake is not too hard and as you turn every bend, you discover a new photo opportunity. Highlights would be the teeming birdlife, the Boathouse Restaurant from across at the pier, mineral water pumping, even an exceptional meal at Lake House, overlooking the view. It’s family and dog friendly too. Madam Berry Mine is off the beaten track, not far from Creswick. It’s an impressive mining relic
and one of 120 mine sites around it. Berry Mine 1 is particularly haunting, with the tumbling red brick walls a stark contrast to the surrounding dry hilly backdrop. If you like to dabble in some astrophotography, this is an excellent place to visit. You are miles from anywhere, with minimal light pollution, and the stars are incredible, filling up the entire sky. Between Kyneton, Lancefield and Tooborac, you’ll find a different landscape again. It feels like Ireland, although dryer. There are giant granite boulders everywhere, thrown out across the region from the many volcanoes and geographic shifts that happened millions of years ago. Finally, the Malmsbury Viaduct which is one of the most iconic structures in the region. You immediately know and recognise this backdrop. It’s an imposing historic build, and it’s still doing its job 160 years later. The bluestone used is found in other Malmsbury buildings too. Take a glimpse and a snap of the ‘Mansions’, the old flour mill and even the train station. V I S I TO R G U I D E | 51

If you’re attracted to a locale with a long history, then this is the land for you. Wurrung people, who occupied these lands for thousands of years, long-regarded these sites as a special place of healing. The promise and subsequent discovery of gold in 1851 brought new significance to the area where Lake Daylesford now runs deep.

The well-preserved and restored buildings not only show the prosperity of the expanding towns, they also confirm the lasting influence of the Swiss-Italian miners who came to work the tunnel mines in the surrounding hills but stayed to work the lands. One of the best vantage points to view the rolling landscape is Pioneer Memorial Tower, officially opened in 1938 and located at the peak of Wombat Hill, Daylesford. Make sure to gather up your energy and climb the 77 winding concrete steps to the top and breathe in the truly spectacular views and then retire to Wombat Hill House, an excellent café laden with yummy and fresh regional produce and drinks.

Trentham to Daylesford Art Trail Encourage your inner art critic and explore the creative community that resides between Trentham and Daylesford. This magnificent collective of artists is recognised internationally, but instead of being surrounded by high-rise buildings and cityscape structures they are nestled quietly within the picturesque landscape of central Victoria from which they draw daily inspiration. At Dianne Longley’s Agave Print Studio in Trentham, printmaking facilities for artists are available as well as accommodation for residencies. Here, the sweet bird calls in the magic garden and the curious kangaroos in sight of the studio will make you want to stay on and create your own work of art. Bullarto based Phillip Edwards has always been inspired by nature. While a watercolour specialist now, Edwards has made conceptual art and sculptures and now finds creative energy in landscape. After being commissioned by the Danish Royal Family, Andrew O’Brien rose to international
fame to create an artwork for their last Royal Tour in 2013. Large in scale, Andrew’s paintings are often over three metres tall and wide, with his renowned rich colour palettes deriving inspiration from the Australian landscape. You can visit his studio at Stonewalls at Musk. Kim Barter’s paintings, drawings and prints are striking with layers of defaced surfaces and heavy paints. Kim’s farm backs onto the Wombat Forest, where she can observe the change of seasons. This landscape is reflected in her works which can be seen hanging on the walls of establishments throughout Central Victoria. Following a career as an arts educator and gallery director, Greg Mallyon settled in Hepburn to set up a studio and focus on his unique paintings. Inspired by the Earth and environment viewed and created from an aerial perspective, his stunning works reflect the endless cycle of destruction and renewal of our planet. Words by Ali Webb.

The Trentham Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, dramatically plunging some 32 metres over basalt columns. Trentham Falls was formed five million years ago from molten lava rapidly cooling as it flowed along the old Coliban River valley. The Trentham Cascades are a short walk further north from the Falls Reserve carpark.

Mineral Springs Reserve Located at the northern end of town, these natural springs are home to the iconic Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, an extensive network of bush walking tracks and BBQ facilities. The park has a collection of mineral springs, some flowing continuously, and others operated with a hand pump. Visitors are able to freely bottle their own bubbling mineral water from the springs which include Locarno, Soda, Sulphur and Wyuna. Hepburn Springs

Mount Franklin Reserve
Relax in the country, find tranquillity, breathe fresh air, listen to birdsong, be refreshed and enjoy the space and beautiful vistas at Lavandula. At its heart is the golden stone Rustico, a cluster of farm buildings constructed by Italians from southern Switzerland who came to look for gold and stayed to farm. Lavender is planted as crop art; in winter it’s trimmed and sculptural; at Christmas the lavender is in flower and is harvested through the heat of January, by hand with sickles.
Mount Franklin, or Lalgambook, as it is known by the Dja Dja Wurrung people, is an extinct volcano offering fine views on the approach to the summit. The sheltered crater is a superb place for a picnic or simple camping set amongst huge and pretty conifers and deciduous trees, creating an exotic atmosphere. Mount Franklin is a fine example of a breached scoria cone. The breach, through which the road now enters the crater, is thought to have been caused by a flow of lava breaking through the crater rim.

The Cascade, Metcalf
Guide to our Wonderful Waterfalls The rain through the cooler months of the year ensures the region’s waterfalls look truly spectacular. Thanks to our position on the Great Dividing Range, three important Victorian rivers begin here – the Coliban, Loddon and Campaspe – all of which feed into the Murray. The Cascades is a hidden gem nestled away just north of Metcalfe. Water tumbles over layers of bedrock through rock pools and crevices before funnelling into little caverns. Relax in the rock pools or take a swim in one of the bigger swimming holes. It is best to visit after some rain. Cascades Road, Metcalf Trentham Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, with its waters cascading 32 meters. It is an easy walk to the Trentham Falls viewing area from the parking and picnic area. Lush bushlands surround the falls, and the area boasts impressive hiking and bike bush tracks. Trentham Scenic Reserve Road, Trentham
Loddon Falls is a short five minute drive north of Glenlyon, along the Loddon River. This is an undeveloped spot with a steep incline and dirt tracks that can get muddy in the wetter months. It has restricted access when there has been significant rainfall. If you are keen to forge on, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the waterfall and surrounds. Sewells Road, Glenlyon Sailors Falls, just south of Daylesford, is thought to be named after the sailors who jumped ship to seek gold in the area during the 1850s gold rush. You can view the spectacular twin falls from the picnic area, just a short stroll from the car park. As you are returning, stop to taste and collect the natural mineral water from the nearby pump. Out & About Discover historic Kyneton
Big Bold Landscapes
If you have an interest in some of the finest historic buildings in regional Victoria, Kyneton is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. A walk around the town’s centre will take you past a number of 19th century civic buildings, churches, schools, commercial buildings and private homes, many dating back to the 1850s. Each of these buildings has their own fascinating stories about the people who lived and worked in them. Kyneton’s oldest building, the single-storey bluestone former Anglican rectory on the corner of Piper and Ebden streets, dates back to 1850. Today, this beautiful building set in half an acre of gardens has been lovingly restored and now offers luxurious accommodation for visitors to the area.
Relatively unexplored, mounds of enormous granite boulders lie scattered between the district of Kyneton, Pyalong, Baynton and Tooborac. Millions of years of erosion have left rock formations, ancient and worn with an appearance of giants’ marbles strewn across the landscape like an unwanted game. The area is extremely photogenic. Discover wildflowers, wildlife and structures like the Nulla Vale Balancing Stone and Tooborac Rock Monument. Find pastures dotted with sheep, cattle and contrasting monolithic natural sculptures. For those who enjoy a weekend drive, cruise across plains, undulating hills, windswept bushland and imagine a day when it was a favourite spot for men of ill-repute.

Campaspe River Walk Running alongside the Kyneton Botanical Gardens is the historic Campaspe River Walk, which stretches from the Gardens to the bottom of Piper Street and beyond to the Racecourse. It provides a stimulating walk along the river and passes through the wonderful Sculpture Park near Quarry Reserve and features information on the river’s heritage.

The marquee event each year is Kyneton Cup Day (held the day after Melbourne Cup) forming part of Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival. This event day attracts people from all over Australia and other parts of the world, who now attend this day each year as part of their Melbourne Cup Week activities.

Kyneton Museum This museum’s collection reflects the life and times of Kyneton and wider district from around the 1850s to the 1930s and is housed in an authentic National Trust bluestone building that was the former Bank of New South Wales built in 1856. There are changing exhibitions in the original banking chamber, and upstairs the bank manager’s residence is preserved in time. Outdoor exhibits include original bluestone stables, a servants’ kitchen and laundry. The museum is also home to a wide variety of carriages and historical agricultural equipment so that you can expand your knowledge of Victorian farming history.

Kyneton Botanic Gardens The historic bluestone gates on Mollison Street mark the entrance to this renowned local site that dates back to 1858. There are 17 trees within which are listed by the National Trust, as well as a gardener’s cottage. Meander along the path through the thoughtfully crafted gardens, designed to inspire all your senses. Starting as the Castlemaine Woollen Mill in 1875, and finishing as Victoria Carpets in 2013, The Mill is rapidly becoming a place for food and artisan manufacturing, and is a key part of Castlemaine’s vibrancy. Here you’ll find an abundance of small businesses: café, coffee roastery, wine, ice-cream, bread, cakes, beer, and more to come.
Once you’ve collected local goods from the surrounding provedores, farm gates and wineries, head to the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. Established in the 1850s, the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens is one of Victoria’s earliest regional botanic gardens, encompassing a wonderful collection of trees and shrubs along with a few surprises from its rich past. The central focal point of the gardens is the Ornamental Lake with the formed island at its centre. The fountain was built in the 1930s from bluestone salvaged from a nearby demolished mill. Both the fountain and the lake edges have been restored in recent years and the Dutch elms planted at the front of the lake were planted as a memorial to soldiers of the First World War.

Malmsbury Viaduct The Malmsbury Viaduct is a feat of incredible stone engineering, built in 1859 using thousands of labourers to carry the Bendigo railway line over the Coliban River. It is one of Victoria’s largest 19th century engineering structures, consisting of five-arched spans reaching 152 metres from end-to-end. Best access point is found along the walking track from the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens.

Victorian Goldfields Railway The Victorian Goldfields Railway operates along the formerly disused line between Castlemaine and Maldon. Their elegant carriages provide you with a glimpse of what it was like to travel during the golden age of rail. The Real Stars of the Screen There’s unrivalled beauty in the natural landscapes, architecture, forests and rural streetscapes of the Central Highlands that draws thousands of visitors to our picturesque part of the world year-round. For all those reasons, local and international movie and television location scouts keep coming back to our region searching for the perfect location to create movie magic. The picturesque town of Clunes is clearly a firm favourite. Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson, was shot here 42 years ago. Then there was the remake of The True Story of Ned Kelly, released last year, and Picnic at Hanging Rock, the original movie and the most recent television series (it goes without saying the original movie and miniseries were of course shot on location at Hanging Rock). Although once again, Clunes was the chosen location for a number of scenes. In 2018, this little town was the chosen location for the Australian mini-series Bloom featuring the legendary Jackie Weaver and Bryan Brown. Childhood favourite Charlotte’s Web released in 2006, which we are led to believe is set in England, was actually filmed on the Morrocdong Sheep farm, near the old mining town of
Greendale with its rolling hills and old world beauty. It was a case of who’s who among homegrown actors with the filming of Ned Kelly in 2003. The 2015 television series Glitch features six people who return from the dead in the fictional town of Yoorana. In reality, it was filmed in and around the historic gold rush town of Castlemaine. Liam Neeson often remarks how he loves Australia. And in 2020, the action icon travelled to Macedon to shoot scenes from Blacklight where a local swimming hole metamorphosed into an American trailer park. It’s safe to say we love being showcased, sharing our remarkable landscape, natural beauty and historic architecture with the rest of the world.

Out & About Creswick of the Lindsays Arts Trail
Anderson’s Mill
The Lindsays, one of Australia’s best known artistic families, are synonymous with Creswick. The Creswick of the Lindsays Arts Trail comprises of 24 sites of importance to the family, and weaves through 7.6 kms of the town, including the Creswick cemetery where seven members of the family lie. The best place to start the trail is at the Visitor Information Centre at the corner of Albert and Victoria Streets where you can collect a trail guide.
Anderson’s Mill is an important part of Victoria’s Goldfields’ heritage. Located in a truly postcard setting on the banks of Birch’s Creek at Smeaton, Anderson’s Mill stands as a reminder of an industry that flourished after the gold rush of the 1850s. Standing much like it was over 100 years ago, the five-storey bluestone building and its magnificentlycrafted iron water wheel are still in place.

Visitors are instinctively drawn to the scenic parks and cool, relatively undisturbed forests of this part of the region. The Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park are some of the most ideal natural locations for spotting Australia’s much-loved furry creatures: fluffyeared koalas, velvety kangaroos and chubby wombats. Bacchus Marsh to Blackwood proudly owns a rich history worth exploring. Originally inhabited by the Kutung, the Wathaurong, the Wurundjeri, the Jaara and the Ngurelban
Indigenous tribes, this connection can still be seen through place names such as Myrniong, which was named with the murrnong plant in mind, the Aboriginal word for ‘yam daisy’ – a popular food source. Successive waves of farmers, goldminers and timber workers have all shaped the personality of this land with the legacy still on show in the small towns of Blackwood, Bacchus Marsh and beyond. One of Victoria’s famous bushrangers, Captain Moonlight, has even been associated with this area. V I S I TO R G U I D E | 115
Today you can go for a drive and uncover all the new features of this place, such as quaint roadside stalls selling seasonal local produce from berries in summer to potatoes in winter. Even Hollywood recognised the beauty of this part of the world, with Greendale’s scenic rolling hills and lush country landscapes

Blackwood – historic goldmining village In 1855, the goldmining village of Blackwood had 13,000 prospectors on the hunt for instant wealth. Today, those golden days are gone but this historic village remains, situated amidst the tall timbers and lush greenery of the Wombat State Forest. Discover a whole new world of riches by paying this quaint town a visit.
Soda Mineral Water When gold was discovered in Blackwood, it was a dark, wet forest with rainfall exceeding one metre yearly. Chinese miners panning in the Lerderderg River found springs on either side; one is now known as Soda Spring. In 1887, a government analyst described the springs as an equal of Apollinaris, a German mineral water selling for two shillings and sixpence a bottle. Today you can sample and bottle the spring water free - how awesome! Huggett Lane, Blackwood
Lerderderg River This river is known for the Lerderderg Gorge Picnic Ground, camping, bushwalking and fishing activities. In earlier days, gold was mined in the upper reaches, and some of the
old mines (considered dangerous to enter) can be seen as you travel along the sluice on the east bank, which previously fed into those mines. Lerderderg State Forest
