WELCOME TO
Welcome to the 67th anniversary of Art Ball, Dayton’s longest-running and premier formal event!
Please join me in thanking the Dayton Art Institute’s incredible Associate Board and this year’s Art Ball Chairs, Julie Forman and Martin Gehres, for making this evening so memorable. Tonight is only possible thanks to their hard work and dedication. Art Ball is one of the museum’s top fundraisers, and the money raised helps the DAI continue its mission of bringing art to all. We thank each Associate Board member for their commitment, effort and time.
Whether this is your first time at Art Ball, or you are a returning guest, your presence tonight is truly an honor. You are about to embark on an evening filled with dazzling fashion, delicious food and drink and, of course, choice entertainment. This year’s theme, “Groove,” celebrates the influence of disco and club culture in contemporary art. With it, we give to the legacy of Art Ball’s past while introducing new and exciting elements to the evening. We invite you to immerse yourself in the “Groove” and dance the night away.
2024 has already been an outstanding year for your DAI. We have spent the first five months continuing to accomplish the goals of our strategic plan, Intentional Momentum, and to fulfill our mission: Through art, we create transformative and diverse experiences, strengthen community connections and inspire imagination — ambitions we will continue through the end of 2024 and beyond. We are preparing to open our second Special Exhibition near the end of this month. Soon, we will showcase Riveting: Women Artists from the Sara M. and Michelle Vance Waddell Collection. We will end the year lightheartedly with two iconic animated classics in Merry Grinchmas: Art of Dr. Seuss’ Holiday Classic & (B)Art!
America’s Funniest Animated Family. If you have not already, plan your trip to see these exhibitions or one of the many remarkable Focus Exhibitions. There are so many wonderful opportunities for connection and exploration at the museum this year; we look forward to seeing you here.
We hope tonight is a night you will never forget. We encourage you to consider making a gift to the DAI at one of our donation kiosks. Your contribution, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in providing all in the community with unique art experiences. We also invite you to consider becoming a member, so that you may come back often and experience all that your DAI has to offer.
Cheers to another incredible Art Ball, and thank you for being with us!
Warm regards,
Michael R. Roediger, MSLD, CFRE Director & President PHOTO BY KNACK VIDEO + PHOTOTONIGHT’S ART BALL INSPIRATION:
Petah Coyne’s It’s Raining Colored Dots
It’s Raining Colored Dots is a play of bold splashes of color against a black background. Loose blobs surround human forms that are shown leaping horizontally across the center of the composition. The figures overlap, from left to right, rendered in saturated colors of yellow, orange, red, green and blue, which repeat the sequence at center to make a total of ten leaping bodies. Or is it a single form that changes colors as movement progresses, shown as if a montage of stopaction jumping and landing? The dizzying combination of suggested motion with colorful marks makes for an energetic design that recalls the visual effect of light playing off a disco ball. Today, the title further suggests the Disco Era by bringing to mind The Weather Girl's danceable hit, It’s Raining Men (although the artwork predates the song by approximately five years).
Petah Coyne is an internationally recognized sculptor and photographer based in New York and best known for large, hanging compositions and floor installations featuring assorted items, including taxidermy, and found objects that are then covered in wax. Born in Oklahoma into a military family, she moved frequently in her youth before the family settled in Dayton, Ohio. Coyne graduated Oakwood High School in 1972, attended art classes at University of Dayton, enrolled at Kent State and graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1977, at which point she moved to New York. This work by Coyne was created as she was a new and emerging professional in the art world.
