I was very nervous coming into the University of Dayton, but now its become my second home. The professors are always there to work with you and advisors that are willing to sit down with you to make sure you are on the right path. As a senior on the track team, not only have I made life long friends, but I have grown both physically and mentally. It has been a wonderful journey watching the team develop into the team it is today, and I cant wait to see what the future has in store. Being able to take part in the NCAA Championship was a really great experience for me. It helped me to understand the level of dedication it takes to make it to the next level in track beyond A10’s, but it also made me realize the potential the team has. We have a lot of really talented people on the team with the ability to get there in the near future. After having the privilege to be there last year, I can’t wait to go back with more of my teammates because it was a really amazing part of my experience at UD! – Ashley Cattran, Sophomore (First Track Athlete to compete in NCAA Championships)

NCAA Regional Championship was an experience that I will never forget. Throwing the hammer for only my second year and being among the some of the best athletes in the region gave me a strong sense of accomplishment. At that point I realized that my fellow teammates, my hard work, dedication, coaching, and an overall great program at UD had prepared me for that moment and more to come. Although it felt a bit overwhelming being at a higher level of competition, I realized the moment I faced was what I had worked so hard for. So, I had to do what I knew I could do which was perform at my best. It was a really great experience and it allowed me to see what I needed to do to reach an even further level of competition. The University of Dayton has been my home for almost three years, and I still can’t get enough. The professors, advisers, administration, coaches and trainers are all ready and willing to help a student-athlete achieve. The atmosphere at UD values hard work and diligence which gives way to both academic and athletic success. Throughout my Cross Country and Track and Field career, I have always found both a support system and a family in the community at UD. UD was the perfect choice for me. The small school atmosphere has given me a chance to get to know my classmates and professors. Being on the track team has given me structure and a sense of family. My experience at UD has challenged me in ways I never thought my mind and body could be challenged. These challenges in athletics and academics have not only matured and changed me into who I am today, but they have also inspired me. Now I know that I have the capacity to push myself even farther than I originally thought possible. I could have not done this without the support of my team and coaches. I could have never imagined coming into The University of Dayton that I would be leaving with the amount of experience and the enriched background I have now as a senior. As a Sport Management major, I have been lucky to encounter professors that care so much about preparing us for the future, just as much as the here and now. Through real life experience in the classroom, I now have the confidence that I will achieve any occupational goals that I set for myself. Being a part of the track and field team only heightened the UD experience for me, teaching me the meaning of hard work, determination, time management, and discipline in every aspect of the word. UD is an all encompassing experience. Academically, UD is very challenging yet rewarding. They emphasize community and collaboration not only in the classroom but throughtout the entire campus. Athletically, our athletics teams are very hardworking from bids to the NCAA tournaments to all time best conference performance our athletics program strives to promote excellence on and off the court, field, track etc. Our athletics department in general grosses one of the highest GPA’s in the nation emphasizing academics first and athletics second. ADAM STEINWACHS

TRACK & FIELD HEAD COACH THIRD SEASON AT UD ASHLAND UNIVERSITY ‘00

Entering his third season at the helm of the Dayton Flyers, head track & field coach Adam Steinwachs was named the program’s first-ever Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2009. Steinwachs has led UD to its most successful stint in program history after leading the squad to second place finishes in the Atlantic 10 Indoor and Outdoor Championships in back-to-back seasons.

COACHES

In the 2008-2009, Steinwachs coached UD to another second place finish at the A-10 Indoor Championships as the team garnered the most points in the team’s history (139). Five of Steinwachs athletes captured conference crowns in their events including Amy Kremer (high jump), Ashley Cattran (800 meter), Courtney Siebenaller (pole vault), Mallory Barnes (weight throw) and Johnna Zaccari (shot put).

Siebenaller took gold at both A-10 Championships, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship during the indoor season (13-00.25) and also qualified for and competed in the NCAA Mideast Regional during the outdoor season. She broke the school record 14 times in the pole vault throughout the year.

With help from Steinwachs, Cattran set seven new records in the indoor 800 meter and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship. Cattran also qualified for and competed in the U.S. National Championship finishing 12th with a personal best of 2:06.37 in the 800 meter event. She continued her successful campaign in the outdoor season, breaking school records in the 800, 1500 and 4x400 meter relay.

Prior to Dayton, Steinwachs served as head track & field coach at Roberts Wesleyan College where he was a twotime NAIA Women’s Regional Track and Field Coach of the Year. Under his reign, Steinwachs helped the Raiders finish in the Top 10 at the NAIA Championships twice. During his term RWC produced 39 Conference Champions, 89 NCCAA All-Americans, 29 NCCAA National Champions, 24 NAIA All-Americans, five National Champions, three US National qualifiers and a four-time US National Champion.

Steinwachs coached 2009 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Courtney Siebenaller, who shattered school records in the pole vault in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

In addition, Steinwachs, along with pole vaulting coach Rick Suhr, helped train seven-time U.S. National Champion and

American record holder Jenn Stuczynski, who notably is the first American woman to clear 16-01.75. Stuczynski, a former student-athlete at Roberts Wesleyan, is a four-time USA Indoor Pole Vault Champion (‘05, ‘07-`09) and a fourtime USA Outdoor Champion (‘06-’09) with the help of Suhr and Steinwachs. Steinwachs continues to help coach Stuczynski, who won a silver medal in the pole vault at the 2008 Olympic Games and at the Indoor World Championships. Steinwachs got his start in coach as a graduate assistant at the University of North Dakota where he was a contributor to the programs largest and most-talented recruiting class in recent history in 2002. He resides in Centerville, Ohio.

Steinwachs: Our team goal this season is to win the A10 Championship. It won’t be easy, but it’s what we’re all working toward and we believe we can do it. Additionally, a team goal is to bring home our first NCAA All American from the National Championship and place our team in the top 30 at that meet. What can we expect to see from the A-10 this year? How does UD stack-up in the conference? Steinwachs: Charlotte and Rhode Island will be strong again this year and should be contending for the top position. But we feel we’re a better team from a year ago so it should put us closer to Charlotte than we’ve ever been which will make for an interesting conference meet. Who will be some of the big contributors to the team this year? Steinwachs: We expect Ashley Cattran, Mallory Barnes, & Courtney Siebenaller to be key contributors. They’re all returning A10 Champions and NCAA Qualifiers in the 800, weight throw, and pole vault. Additionally, Maura Bulgrin, Liz Coorey, Elissa Mason, Brigitte Sherman, Johnna Zaccari, Molly McCarty, Sarah Allen, Lauren McCormick, Brittany Thomas, and Lauren O’Brien have done well at previous A10 Championship meets. Discuss the newcomers. What will they add to the team? Who do you expect to do well? Steinwachs: Our freshman class has tremendous potential. Katie Nageotte and Christine Borchers won state titles in 2009 in the pole vault and shot put and we expect them to be immediate contributors. We also believe Jada Henderson will help us in the long sprinting events and relays while Renee Otte will keep us strong in the multi-events. In the distance events, we’ll be looking for Taylor Beyerle, Allie Heniff, and Marisa Slomski to step up and help the team. Talk about the schedule (both indoor and outdoor) and what meets you expect to be challenging? Steinwachs: Our schedule is competitive and it also keeps us fairly close to home. During the indoor season we expect the Bowling Green Challenge and Akron Invitational to be very competitive. Outdoor, the Weems Baskin Relays at the University of South Carolina and the All-Ohio Championship will test our athletes as we work toward A10’s. Talk about the team leaders. Once again we have tremendous leadership from our captains. Lauren McCormick, Lauren O’Brien and Brittany Thomas represent our sprinters. Maura Bulgrin is our distance captain while Katie DeVault represents the jumpers. Our multi-event captain is Emma Steinmetz and representing our throwers is Sarah Allen. Our captains do a great job leading by example and setting the tone for what a Dayton Flyer Track & Field athlete should be. Is there a theme or motto this year amongst the team? Steinwachs: Our motto continues to be “Close the Gap”. We’re fighting an uphill battle but the girls know they’re getting close and our seniors really want to end their career with nothing less than a conference championship. Cross Country winning the A10 has been inspiring for the team and it’s helped us believe it can be done.

Last season the program had its best year in history. Considering you only lost two to graduation, what can Flyer fans expect this year? What are the goals of the program this season?

ASSISTANT COACHES

CROSS COUNTRY HEAD COACH/ ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH SEVENTH SEASON AT UD PURDUE ‘01

Alyanak was named head coach of the Flyer women’s cross country program on May 6, 2004. Alyanak also serves as an assistant track and field coach, working primarily with the distance runners. She is the first full-time distance coach at UD. A Bluffton, Ohio native, she spent the 2003 season as a graduate assistant coach with the Flyers. Immediately after the season Alyanak took over the program. In her six seasons as UD’s head coach, Alyanak’s squads have been named to the All-Academic Cross County Team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, meaning the team has maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.

COACHES

Competitively, Alyanak has coached 15 of the top 35 fastest UD runners in the program’s history. The 2008 squad had one of its best seasons in program history after recording its highest finish ever at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship (third). The team was led by a class of sophomore standouts including Maureen Bulgrin who lead UD in seven of eight races and tallied five top ten finishes throught the course of the season. In 2007, Dayton had one of its strongest seasons to date as two freshmen recorded three of the program’s fastest times. Bulgrin finished the Louisville Cross Country Classic in 18:15.8 and clocked in at 18:24 at the National Catholic Invite for the 22nd and 29th fastest times in program history, respectively. Brigitte Sherman also notched a top time at

the Louisville Classic finishing 18:35.8 for UD’s 35th fastest time.

Road Running Championships (20K) in Hungary.

As an elite athlete, Alyanak has been participating in a number of high profile marathons. Recently, she competed in the 2008 Women’s Marathon -- Olympic Trials where she finished in seventh place (four spots away from qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games) running the course in 2:34:46, which was a personal best by nearly four minutes.

Prior to beginning her coaching career, Alyanak was a 2001 graduate of Purdue University where she was a standout cross country and track runner for the Boilermakers. During each of her four years she was named cross country team Most Valuable Runner, earning AllRegion honors in 1999-2000. In track, Alyanak was an NCAA qualifier in the 10,000 meters after winning the Big Ten title as a senior. She also set the school record in the 5000 meters and placed second at the Big Ten Championship.

It’s been her will to succeed and positive nature that has kept Alyanak going as a coach and as a runner. Alyanak has made strides to improve from a strong national runner to a competitor on the international stage. In 2007, she competed in the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan where she placed first among American women and 31st overall. Alyanak had a strong year in 2006, improving her personal bests in the 5K (16:34), 10K (34:19), and 10,000m (33:35.64), while also finishing fourth at the USA Half Marathon Championships in 1:15:30, and posting a 41st-place finish (second American) at the World

Along with her running and coaching responsibilities, Alyanak is also currently pursuing her master’s degree in exercise science from UD. She currently resides in Bellbrook, Ohio with her husband Ed, who is an assistant coach for the Flyers.

VAUGHN DAVIS

ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH/THROWS 13TH SEASON AT UD MT. UNION ‘69

Vaughn Davis began coaching at the University of Dayton when the Flyer track program began in 1996, but his outstanding career in track and field goes back almost 40 years. A native of Alliance, Ohio, Davis was a three-time All-American thrower for Mt. Union College, and is a member of that school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. From 1969 to 1975, he was ranked among the top 30 throwers in the United States. Since coming to UD, Davis has coached 16 Atlantic 10 Champions. More recently, Davis coached current student-athletes Johnna Zaccari, Sarah Allen, and Mallory Barnes to gold medals at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Zaccari repeated as a gold medalist in the A-10 Indoor shot put in 2008-09. She also captured the title in the 2007-08 season and was a member of the All-Conference First Team both seasons. Mallory Barnes earned gold at the Conference Indoor Championships in the weight throw in 2008 after breaking the school record five times throughout the season. Barnes throw of 62-02.25 at the Championships was a new conference record. She placed third in the shot put. Behind Coach Davis, Barnes continued a successful season during the outdoor portion of the year. The Flyer sophomore qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the hammer throw recording a school record toss of 178-05 at

the All-Ohio Championships. In 2007-08, First team selection Sarah Allen captured the A-10 Outdoor Shot Put title. Under his direction, seven Flyers have won A-10 indoor shot put titles including Zaccari in (`07-08 and `08-09), Kelly Pohlman in ‘06, ‘05 and ‘04 and Jodi Borges in ‘00, ‘02, and’03. In addition, a Flyer has won six of the last eight outdoor shot put titles. Davis also helped lead Borges to two A-10 discus titles in 1999 and 2000. Davis began his coaching career at the high school level, and coached two prep All-Americans in the late 1970’s. He coached at Ohio State from 1983 to 1995, and had six All-Americans and nine Big 10 champions, including Kevin Adkins, who was ranked #1 in the world at one time. Davis now lives in Cincinnati, where he is an attorney.

TOM COPE

ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH FOURTH SEASON AT UD McPHERSON COLLEGE ‘75

Season number four at the University of Dayton marks over a decade’s worth of Track and Field coaching experience for Assistant Tom Cope.

While in the Garden State, he trained numerous State Champion hurdlers, including first, second and third place finishers in the State Championship meet in the 100 meter hurdles.

In addition, Cope assisted in training the high jumpers and the multi-event athletes in the hurdles and high jump. As a result of his efforts Amy Kremer (5-08.75, school record) and Lauryn Fougerousse (5-07.00) placed first and fourth, respectively, in the high jump at the A-10 Indoor Championships.

It is only fitting that he finds himself back in the city of Dayton, as it is here that his running career began. Cope was the Dayton Relays Hurdler Champion and the city of Dayton’s runner-up in 110 meter hurdles. He was a record-holder at Belmont High in both hurdle events. As a collegiate athlete, Cope tops the charts in the High Jump. Coach Cope lives in Springboro with his wife Debra.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

During the 2008-09 season, Cope helped coach senior Andrea Cornell to a sixth place finish in the 55 meter hurdles and an eighth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles at the Atlantic 10 Championships, both of which were personal bests in her final season as a Flyer.

A graduate of Belmont High School in Dayton, Ohio, he continued his education at McPherson College (McPherson, Kansas), earning a bachelors degree. Cope is also a certified New Jersey Police Instructor.

Cope joined the Flyer staff in the 2006-07 school year after an eight-year stint of indoor and outdoor coaching at both public and parochial high schools in New Jersey.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING State-of-the-art conditioning centers, fully-equipped training rooms and full-time professionals combine to create a program for student-athletes that gives them a physical edge over the competition. Each UD team has a plan designed and administered by qualified professionals to meet the specific needs of their sport and style of play. All student-athletes perform basic strength training with a general emphasis on explosive lifts that involve as much of the body as possible. Conditioning programs are designed to prepare student-athletes for the specific metabolic demands of their sport. Core training, agility work and sport specific exercises are then incorporated into each program to prepare each student-athlete for competitive success. The UD strength & conditioning coaches work with our sports medicine staff to help reduce the risk of injuries and to efficiently return student-athletes to competition as quickly and as safely as possible following injury. With four staff members holding the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential, UD stays current on the latest research to ensure that our programs are among the best in the country. In addition, the UD strength and conditioning staff can provide assistance in eating strategies that will improve health and competitiveness of UD student-athletes. The University of Dayton athletic conditioning centers, located both in the Frericks Center and the Donoher Basketball Center, house the very latest treadmills, Nautilus equipment, and free weights.

FACILITIES There are two Athletic Training Rooms in operation at the. University of Dayton. The Arena Training Room is located in the Donoher Basketball Center and utilized by Arena Complex teams for practices and games. The Frericks Center training room is open year round and is utilized for treatment and rehabilitation to all sports in the mornings and serves those sports that operate out of the Frericks Center in the afternoon.

STAFF The University of Dayton Sports Medicine Staff consists of a team of Family Practice Physicians and Orthopedic Consultants and four full-time and two graduate assistant certified and. licensed Athletic Trainers. In particular instances the Head Team Physician may refer athletes to other physicians or specialists. However, the Head Team Physician supervises the status of all athletes referred to other physicians or specialists and has the final authority with regard to all medical disqualifications,. treatment, and return to play. Referrals to specialists will be made through the Team Physicians or Athletic Trainers only. Trained personnel are present at all athletic contests and, where possible, at all practices to ensure prompt medical attention. The Sports Medicine Staff works closely with the coaching staff to keep them informed regarding the medical. status of the athletes. We strive to prevent injuries through pre-participation physical examinations, welldesigned conditioning programs, warm-ups, proper practice planning, and appropriate equipment selection. When an athletic injury occurs, our goal is to provide the best medical care possible from the initial first-aid to the follow-up care and rehabilitation.

SPORTS MEDICINE SEAN CONVERY, M.D. HEAD PHYSICIAN staff. Convery’s primary full-time position is serving as the medical director of The Sports Medicine Center at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. In. addition, he is a faculty member in the Family Practice Residency Program at Miami Valley Hospital; associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Practice at Wright State University School of Medicine; school physician for the Kettering City School District; and team physician at Kettering Fairmont High School. Convery is past president of the Miami Valley Academy of Family. Practice and serves as Montgomery County Medical Association delegate to the Ohio State Medical Association. He is a member of the American. College of Sports Medicine and a charter member of the American. Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Convery is active within the. Dayton community, having been involved as a volunteer physician for the Nike Tour, Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis, Dayton River Corridor Classic and Special Olympics. A 1977 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio, Convery holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry. He is a 1981 graduate of the Wright State University School of Medicine. He is a board certified family practice physician with additional certification in sports medicine. A Philadelphia native, Convery currently resides in Centerville. Former Flyer football standout Dr. Tim Quinn serves his alma mater as the

Quinn received his medical degree from Ohio State in 1976, and then received a fellowship to study at the International College of Surgeons in London, England. Quinn’s father Joe played and coached football at UD, and is a member of UD’s Athletic Hall of Fame. The Quinn family — Tim, his father Joe, his brother Dan and his uncle Fran — combined for 14 football letters. Dr. Quinn has been an orthopedic surgeon in Dayton since 1981.

UD track and field has never experienced sustained success like it has in the past three years under head coach Adam Steinwachs, who inherited a program on the rise in 2007 and has since made it into one of the Atlantic 10 Conference’s best. In its past two seasons, the team has produced runner-up finishes at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets.

Although Cattran is a clear standout, Dayton also boasts a strong crop of short and long distance runners. Looking to rack up points this year will be seniors Brittany Thomas and Lauren McCormick, who should challenge for one of the top spots in the shortdistance sprints at the conference meet.

Barnes, who won the 2009 conference indoor championship in the weight throw as a sophomore, shattered the A-10 record and will strive to get back to NCAA regionals in her junior season. Zaccari was a repeat winner in the shot put, and now has three conference medals to her credit. Allen, a senior, is two years removed from he A-10 first-place finish in the shot put, but should be fully recovered from a junior year injury and primed for an outstanding final season as a Flyer. Dayton’s proven quantities in the sprints and field events will surely be aided by its distance team, which placed first overall in the A-10 in its 2009 cross country season. Dayton will also lean on a strong recruiting class and several other improved upper-classmen, as the Flyers strive to get closer to conference power Charlotte. “Our team goal this season is to win the A-10 Championship,” Steinwachs said. “We’re fighting an uphill battle, but the girls know they’re getting close and our seniors really want to end their career with nothing less than a conference championship. High School Nageotte, a pole vaulter from Olmsted Falls High School, will join an already talented Flyer bunch in the field events next season... The graduating senior holds the pole vault record for her school, as well as the meet records for the Southwest Conference, District and Ohio outdoor meets... As a junior she went undefeated in every meet and finished second in the state of Ohio, where she tied the winning height... Her personal best in the event is 12-06.00. Nageotte also competes in the 100 meter, 100 meter relay, 100 hurdles and 200 meter races... A multi-talented athlete, she lettered for four years as a diver on the Olmsted Falls swim team and earned another three letters as a varsity golfer.

2009 was another year to remember for the University of Dayton track and field program. On a team-level, the Flyers placed second at both the A-10 indoor and outdoor conference meets for the second-straight season. On an individual-level, they had five conference champions, three regional qualifiers and sent their first athlete ever to the NCAA Championships in March. All in all, it’s been a remarkable couple seasons for Head Coach Adam Steinwachs, who has taken the program to new heights in just two years on campus. Amongst the many individual accomplishments of the 2008-09 team, Ashley Cattran’s efforts in the 800 meter run stands as the best season of any Flyer track athlete ever. Cattran broke the school record six times in the first three months of the season on her way to invitations to the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, where the sophomore lined up with Olympic caliber competition. She then received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M University in March. Running against the best talent in the nation, the sophomore from Centerville, Oh. ran her way to 12th place after being seeded 16th in the pre-race rankings. Courtney Siebenaller also proved to be a quick study in the 2009 season, making it all the way to NCAA Regionals in the pole vault event as a rookie. The ultra-competitive freshman broke UD’s vault record 14 times during the course of the season and took gold in both the A-10 indoor and outdoor conference meets.

Charlotte, the team recorded 139 points at the event – the most by any Flyer team at A-10’s. At that meet, then-sophomores Ashley Cattran (800 meter), Mallory Barnes (weight throw) and Johnna Zaccari (shot put) all put together conference championship performances. Senior multi-event standout Amy Kremer also won the high jump for her 10th career conference medal, while freshman Siebenaller took gold in the pole vault and ran away with Rookie of the Year honors. For the Flyers’ record-setting performance, Steinwachs was recognized as the conference’s Indoor Coach of the Year.

The team also got off to a hot start at the 2009 A-10 Outdoor Championships, breaking two school records (pole vault and 4x800) in the event’s first day and clinging to first-place after the meet’s first nine events. They would break another two school records on day two, but once again could not keep up with Charlotte’s remarkable runners, who stormed to a fourthstraight conference title. Siebenaller once again claimed a conference championship for UD.

After outdoors, Barnes and Siebenaller traveled to Louisville to represent the Flyers at the NCAA Regional meet. Siebenaller also had the distinction of being invited to Eugene, Ore. after the season for the 2009 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Dayton’s other regional qualifier was sophomore Mallory Barnes, who broke the Atlantic 10 indoor weight throw record on her way to a fourth conference medal and was honored as Field Performer of the Meet. As a team, the Flyers were able to duplicate their unprecedented success from the 2008 season. UD won the Jane Hermann meet at Bowling Green during the outdoor season and placed second in the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational and the Early Bird Relays at the University of Cincinnati to open up the outdoor slate. Displaying a remarkable amount of consistency, the team also put up back-to-back second-place finishes at the A-10 Conference Championships.

NCAA COMPLIANCE WHAT IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE/”PROSPECT”?

A prospect is any student who has started classes for the ninth (9th) grade, any student who receives financial assistance or other benefits from UD and/or its athletics representative that are not normally provided to prospective students generally. You become a “recruited prospective student-athlete” at a particular college if any coach or representative of the college’s athletics interests (booster or representative) approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,162 student-athletes in the Fall 2008 while 1,164 were named to the Spring 2009 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2000-09, 182 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie, Christa Dominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure’s Katelyn Murray and David Zenk of George Washington received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 Conference had 50 teams among the 767 Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective

2008-09 REVIEW For the 15th time in Conference history and sixth since 2000, the Atlantic 10 Conference earned multiple at-large berths to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament as league champion Temple was joined by Xavier and Dayton in the field of 65. The A-10 was the only non-BCS conference to earn multiple at-large bids. Xavier advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in six years and ended the year ranked 15th by ESPN/USA Today and 20th by the Associated Press. Duquesne and Rhode Island earned NIT bids, while Richmond reached the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational. Off the court, Commissioner McGlade announced that Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., would serve as the site of the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and that the finals will be televised on CBS Sports for the first time in league history. In women’s basketball, Charlotte captured its first-ever A-10 Championship and was joined in the NCAA Tournament by Temple and Xavier. It marked the fourth time in five seasons that three teams from the Conference received NCAA berths. Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, Richmond and St. Bonaventure garnered WNIT bids as an unprecedented eight A-10 teams represent the league in postseason play. Saint Louis became the first A-10 volleyball program to go undefeated (13-0) in league play since 1997 and seized its second league championship. The Billikens were joined by Dayton in the 2008 NCAA Volleyball Championship, giving the Conference multiple NCAA teams for the third time in history. In men’s soccer, Dayton captured its first A-10 Championship since 1998, while Massachusetts and Saint Louis earned at-large berths to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. It marked the first time since 1989 that three A-10 teams represented the Conference in the tournament. Charlotte claimed its second consecutive A-10 women’s soccer championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAAs. In softball, UMass won its league-record 21st regular season and Conference Championships and advanced to the NCAA Regional finals. Richmond seized its eighth straight A-10 women’s swimming & diving championship and Massachusetts took home the men’s crown for the fourth consecutive year and 11th time in program annals. Xavier captured its first-ever Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship and became the first team since 1999 to hoist the A-10 trophy with two wins on the final day of the Championship. In cross country, Richmond won its second-ever women’s crown while Massachusetts’ men’s team claimed its first A-10 title since 1995. The UMass field hockey team seized both the regular season title and the A-10 Championship crown for the second consecutive year. Charlotte won its fourth-straight league title in men’s golf, Massachusetts seized its second-ever A-10 lacrosse title and first since 2000, Xavier repeated as league champions in men’s tennis and earned the accompanying NCAA automatic berth, while Richmond claimed the program’s sixth A-10 women’s tennis championship. Massachusetts captured its

league-record 13th Atlantic 10 women’s rowing championship, Charlotte defended its women’s indoor and outdoor track & field titles, while the 49ers’ men’s team also captured the indoor and outdoor crowns. In all, 464 teams have represented the Atlantic 10 Conference in postseason play since the 1976-77 campaign. Individually, the 2008-09 campaign was filled with extraordinary achievements both in competition and in the classroom. Saint Joseph’s senior Ahmad Nivins, the 2009 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in men’s basketball, and Temple’s Dionte Christmas, the league’s first-ever three-time scoring champion, were named honorable mention All-Americans by the Associated Press. Nivins was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 56th overall selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, while Derrick Brown of Xavier was drafted 40th overall by the Charlotte Bobcats. Ta’Shia Phillips of Xavier garnered Associated Press honorable mention women’s basketball All-America honors and represented the nation as a member of the 2009 World University Games team. George Washington’s Jessica Adair was selected by the Phoenix Mercury with the 34th pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft. Calum Angus of Saint Louis was named to the NSCAA/adidas men’s soccer All-America first-team, while Temple’s J.T. Noone and Chris Salvaggione of Charlotte garnered second-team men’s soccer All-America distinction. Charlotte women’s soccer standout Hailey Beam was tabbed a third-team All-American, while Dayton’s Kathleen Beljan earned freshman All-America honors. George Washington third baseman Sean Rockey garnered third-team All-America baseball honors, while Rich Devereaux of Duquesne, Dayton’s Cameron Hobson and Zack Miller of Saint Louis received freshman All-America accolades. In addition, a record 16 student-athletes from the A-10 were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft. Massachusetts senior Brandice Balschmiter received secondteam All-America distinction in softball and became just the second student-athlete in league annals to garner four consecutive major awards for her sport as a four-time Pitcher of the Year. Teammate Carly Normandin was tabbed a third-team All-American. In swimming & diving, senior David Zenk of George Washington became the first swimmer in Conference history to be named A-10 Swimmer of the Year three times. Sammi McCloud of Saint Louis received third-team All-America honors in women’s volleyball, while SLU volleyball head coach Anne Kordes was tabbed the CVU.com National Coach of the Year. Charlotte’s Pat Springs earned All-America in women’s outdoor track & field (long jump), while Jasmine Jennings (hammer throw) of Rhode Island became the program’s first-ever women’s outdoor track & field All-American. Atlantic 10 student-athletes thrived in the classroom as well. In all, 17 Atlantic 10 student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America teams. First-team Academic All-America honorees were Ryan Bennett (baseball) and Theresa Lisch (women’s basketball) of Saint Louis, Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie (women’s track & field) and Nikki Labuda Czaplicki (women’s soccer), Temple’s J.T. Noone (men’s soccer) and Zack Simmons (men’s soccer) of Massachusetts, who was tabbed the NCAA Academic All-American of the Year for men’s soccer. Women’s volleyball standout Christa Dominick of La Salle earned an educational grant for the upcoming academic year through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program, while Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie received an NCAA Ethnic Minority Postgraduate Scholarship. Additionally, Priscilla Edwards of St. Bonaventure was among just 20 student-athletes nationally to be presented with the National Academic Momentum Award, while La Salle’s field hockey team posted the highest team grade point average in the nation for field hockey. Rhode Island’s Jimmy Baron and Dionte Christmas of Temple were among the ten men’s basketball finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award recognizes student-athletes for great achievement during competition and in the classroom while celebrating the loyalty of seniors who honor their four-year commitment to their universities. The acronym “CLASS” stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

ADMINISTRATION DR. DANIEL J.CURRAN UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Daniel J. Curran is president of the University of Dayton, recognized as a top-tier national university and one of the 10 best Catholic universities in the country. The Philadelphia native became the University of Dayton’s 18th president and first lay leader on July 1, 2002. Dr. Curran is guiding the University of Dayton through transformational times. A new master plan will shape development on a campus that now spans to the Great Miami River. A new strategic plan will focus on strengthening the school’s distinctive Catholic and Marianist identity, diversifying the student body, internationalizing the curriculum, hiring nationally prominent faculty and building upon a learning-living environment that supports academic excellence. Under Dr. Curran’s leadership, the University of Dayton has enjoyed a 15 percent jump in first-year applications, record sponsored research dollars, increased national recognition — and tremendous momentum. In the past five years, the University started new exchange programs in China, established centers of excellence in nanotechnology and fuels and combustion, opened the Science Center and Innovation Center, built a sports complex, launched the nation’s first accelerated law curriculum and started a doctor of physical therapy program. In addition, UD opened the Dayton Early College Academy, a public high school on campus that prepares first-generation college students to earn a high school diploma and college credits at the same time. In the residential arena, UD constructed two facilities that combine living and learning — Marianist Hall, a residence hall with learning spaces, and ArtStreet, an imaginative housing and arts education complex in the University neighborhood. RecPlex, an ultramodern fitness and recreation complex, opened in 2006. In addition, UD teamed with commercial developers on two ventures: University Place, a two-story mixed-use development on the corner of Brown and Stewart streets that will include graduate apartments and retail outlets, and Courtyard by the Marriott at the University of Dayton, a hotel near UD Arena. As part of Citirama 2007, the Dayton Homebuilders Association built a five-house townhouse and renovated another four houses in the student neighborhood. Beyond the physical changes, the University of Dayton has grown in national stature under Dr. Curran’s leadership. A 2006 survey ranks UD first among Catholic universities and third overall for community revitalization initiatives. UD places second nationally in the amount of materials research it performs annually, according to the National Science Foundation. In the classroom, the entrepreneurship program ranks fifth in the nation, according to Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review. As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I board of directors, Dr. Curran helped shape academic reforms designed to improve the graduation rate of student-athletes. He has been named to its executive committee and Division I-AA/I-AAA Presidential Advisory Group. His other national board memberships include the Higher Learning Commission, part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In the Dayton region, he focuses on economic development and high-tech issues. He chairs the Wright Brothers Institute board and serves on nearly two dozen others, including the Dayton Development Coalition, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, National Composite Center and Miami Valley Research Foundation. In the state, the governor tapped him for the Ohio Aerospace and Advisory Council. The Dayton Development Coalition named Curran the Dayton region’s most outstanding volunteer citizen for 2006 for his efforts in securing more than $55 million in Ohio Third Frontier Project grants for the Miami Valley. Colleagues praise him for his forward-thinking approach, dedication to the Marianist mission, energy, approachability and strong commitment to social justice. A sociologist by training, Dr. Curran spent 23 years in various administrative and faculty positions at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, most recently as executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs. He’s a noted scholar in criminology, juvenile justice and social problems, with a deep interest in international issues. His passion for social justice runs deep. At his presidential installation ceremony in April 2003, he noted that a Catholic university must be “a force for social change. As a community of learners and educators, we must analyze the causes of social injustice and educate professionals with a conscience.” He serves on the board of the Ohio Children’s Defense Fund. In 2005, he joined University of Dayton students on a relief trip to hurricane-stricken Mississippi. In 2002, he received the Eternal Flame Award, an international award given for “exceptional contribution to the field of Holocaust education.”

Most of Dr. Curran’s research has focused on ways to address social inequality. His prolific scholarly record includes eight books, most of which he co-authored with his wife, Claire M. Renzetti, a sociology professor at the University of Dayton. Theories of Crime: A Reader was published in 2003 and is now available in Polish and Czech. The two are working on updated editions of Women, Men and Society: The Sociology of Gender and Social Problems: Society in Crisis. In 1993, the University of Pittsburgh Press published his Dead Laws for Dead Men, a historical analysis of coal mine health and safety legislation. Before becoming a vice president at Saint Joseph’s University, Dr. Curran served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for four years. He started his academic career there in 1979 with a series of faculty positions in the department of sociology, including chair from 1988 to 1992. As a professor of sociology, he has taught courses in criminology, social problems, juvenile justice and white-collar crime. Dr. Curran also served as president of the faculty senate at Saint Joseph’s University. In 1990, he served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He held a concurrent professorship at Nanjing University in China. Dr. Curran earned a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in 1980 after receiving a master’s degree from Temple University in 1978 and a bachelor’s degree from Saint Joseph’s University in 1973 — all in sociology. Dr. Curran and his wife, Claire, have two sons, Sean and Aidan.

VICE PRESIDENT/ DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A former Flyer student-athlete himself, Tim Wabler is the seventh man to serve as the University of Dayton’s Director of Athletics. As UD’s Vice-President and Director of Athletics, Wabler is responsible for the oversight of 17 intercollegiate athletics programs, on-campus athletic facilities including Baujan Field and the Frericks Center, and the University of Dayton Arena with the surrounding Arena Sports Complex. Wabler first returned to the University’s Athletics Division as an administrator in 1993 as Associate Director Athletics. As Associate AD, Wabler worked in every area of athletics administration -- overseeing UD’s sports programs, student-athlete support services, development and major facility projects. Since Wabler has been part of the Dayton Athletics Division, the Flyers have experienced significantly improved competitive success. Since 1998, UD has had 32 conference championships and had 21 teams reach the post-season. In the nine years prior to 1998, the Flyers had only seven conference championships and one tournament appearance. The highlights include the following: Women’s soccer has earned five NCAA tournament appearances (including a berth in the “Sweet Sixteen” in 2001) and has won eight of the last 11 A-10 regular season championships. Women’s volleyball has earned four NCAA tournament appearances and has won nine A-10 titles (regular season and/or tournament). Men’s soccer has won five A-10 titles and played in the 2008 NCAA tournament. The baseball team’s record for wins in a season was 25 after the 2000 campaign -- since then UD has won at least 30 games five times. And the Flyer football team has won the Pioneer Football League championship nine times in the 16-year history of the league, and has taken home the 2002 and 2007 NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championships. As success on the field has improved, UD student-athletes have also performed in the classroom. The Flyers’ combined cumulative grade point average has risen to a school-record 3.209. UD has had 34 Academic All-Americans in the last eight years. Only Nebraska, Rensselaer Poly and Rice had more. The Flyers had three Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athletes in 2005-06, the most in school history. Dayton is consistently among the league leaders in placing student-athletes on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, even though the Flyers participate in fewer A-10 sports than all but one school. UD had the most players on the PFL Academic Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year in 2007. Wabler oversaw the Athletics Division’s efforts to provide top-notch facilities for the next generation of Flyer student-athletes with the creation of the Arena Sports Complex. Development of the Arena Sports Complex began with a $13 million renovation to the University of Dayton Arena, completed in 2002. Since then, the University has added a running track, the Jerry Von Mohr Football Practice Field, Time Warner Cable Stadium for baseball and a new softball stadium. Early in Wabler’s tenure, the Athletics Division built the $4.3 million Donoher Basketball Center, an addition to the UD Arena, to provide new facilities for men’s and women’s basketball and football. The entire facility, which was dedicated in June of 1998, was conceived, planned and completed in 20 months time. In those 20 months, the entire $4.3 million cost was paid for by charitable gifts to the University. On campus, renovations to Baujan Field (soccer) and the Frericks Center (volleyball) have improved those facilities to among the best in the Midwest. The latest step forward on campus is the renovation of the Athletics Practice Facility (formerly the Physical Activities Center) that provides much-needed indoor practice space for more than 400 Flyer student-athletes. The Collins Gymnasium now serves as the indoor practice home for all of UD’s outdoor sports, and the conversion of the Lackner Natatorium to a dedicated basketball-only practice facility was completed during the summer of 2007. Including the Arena Seating Plan, gifts to Athletics total over $4.5 million annually. Wabler, a Dayton native, is in charge of all coaches’ contracts for the Athletics Division, and manages radio and TV agreements. Wabler is also the administrator who oversees UD’s athletic fund-raising efforts and long-term finances. Radio and television agreements have been expanded to increase exposure for Flyer athletics. Dayton football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball games are heard internationally on the World Wide Web. UD football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games are also broadcast on News/Talk 1290 WHIO-AM and FM. Wabler has been actively involved in numerous A-10 Conference committees, including the Championships Review Committee, Baseball Committee and Soccer Committee. His committee work also extends to service to the University community. He currently serves on UD’s Campus Master Planning Committee, and has been a past member of UD’s Committee on Diversity in Community and Resource Allocation Steering Committee. Wabler is also an NCAA Peer Reviewer and a member of the Greater Dayton YMCA’s Board of Trustees. A 1974 graduate of UD’s School of Business Administration, Wabler has also completed the Sports Management Institute Executive Program. A former member of UD’s Athletic Board, Wabler was a four-year letterwinner and three-time Pitcher of the Year for UD. He served as team captain as a senior. A 1970 graduate of Chaminade High School in Dayton, Wabler is the first Dayton native to serve as the University’s Director of Athletics. Tim and his wife Arlene have two daughters, Sarah and Leigh Anne.

ASSOCIATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR A storied football coaching career came to an end when Mike Kelly stepped down as head coach of the Flyers on January 22, 2008, but a new chapter began for Kelly and the University of Dayton Athletics Division when he took on the duties of Associate Athletics Director. A man who has dedicated his life to mentoring, Kelly will have no trouble stepping into his new expanded role. In addition to overseeing the departments of Academics, Athletics Communication and Equipment, he will serve as an adviser to up-and-coming coaches. The University’s past president, Brother Raymond L. Fitz, once said “I regard Mike Kelly as one of the best teachers the University of Dayton has.” Kelly developed innumerable players and coaches to experience success on the field and in life. Those teaching skills are just one of the many he possesses that make his transition to administration seamless. Kelly will draw from his nearly 40 years of coaching experience to develop UD’s young professionals. He will serve as a Sports Program Administrator (SPA) for football, baseball, track & field, women’s basketball and women’s cross country. A six-time PFL Coach of the Year, and seven-time national Coach of the Year, he spent 27 years as head coach of the perennial powerhouse Dayton Flyers football program. His management of his staff and players, and his day-to-day dealings with all the departments involved with supporting the program will serve him well in his role of Associate Athletics Director. In Kelly’s last season as head coach, the Flyers finished with an 11-1 record, clinched the Pioneer Football League, won the 2007 Gridiron Classic and were crowned NCAA FCS Mid-Major national champions. Kelly’s goal is to contribute to continue raising the bar in all areas of the University of Dayton Athletics Division. He’s shown, with his team’s successes on the football field, he can set it high. When he stepped down as UD’s football coach, he ended one of the winningest coaching careers in the history of college football, his career winning percentage of .819 the best of any active coach who had been in the profession 25 years or more. In addition to the 1989 NCAA Division III national title, Kelly’s Flyers were also NCAA FCS Mid-Major national champions (by a national poll) in 2002 and 2007.

DR. MICHAEL O’HARE FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Dr. Michael O’Hare, Professor of Physics and Professor of Electro-Optics, was named faculty representative to the NCAA in 1998. Dr. O’Hare has been in the Department of Physics at the University of Dayton since 1966 and served as chair of the department from 1983 to 2007.

Dr. O’Hare has taught physics at all levels and has research experience in atomic, molecular, solid-state and optical physics. He has served as a consultant and visiting scientist to the Wright - Patterson Air Force Materials Laboratory. Most recently, Dr. O’Hare was a co-principal investigator on a NASA sponsored NOVA grant to design curricula for developing scientific literacy in preservice teachers. Dr. O’Hare’s duties as faculty representative to the NCAA include: taking an active role in the institutional control of the intercollegiate athletics program; representing a faculty viewpoint and faculty oversight and advice in the administration of the athletics program; involvement in the assurance of academic integrity of the athletics program and the maintenance of the welfare of the student-athletes; and monitoring of performance of the studentathletes. Dr. O’Hare and his late wife, Patricia, have four daughters, all of whom graduated from the University of Dayton.

A true reflection of Kelly’s character is the way he operated the football program. Taking a stand on integrity has always been paramount in his philosophy and The Ohio High School Athletic Association took notice, honoring Kelly with the OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award, which is presented annually to an Ohioan who has displayed outstanding ethical behavior and integrity in performing his duties and is a role model for others. Some of the previous winners include: astronaut and former U.S. Senator John H. Glenn Jr., Archie Griffin, Wayne Embry, Bill Hosket, Jim Tressel and Clark Kellogg. In February of 2008, Kelly became the 150th member of one of UD’s most exclusive clubs, the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame, and was the sole inductee that year. His 27 years as head coach are the most of any UD coach in any sport. Before being selected as the Flyer’s head coach, Kelly was defensive coordinator under Rick Carter at UD for four seasons. Carter and Kelly first teamed together in the same positions at Hanover College in 1975 and 1976. Kelly is a graduate of Milton-Union High School in West Milton, Ohio, and later attended Manchester (IN) College. He was quarterback on the football team and catcher on the baseball team while lettering in both sports for all four years. After graduating with a degree in physical education and health, he taught and coached at the high school level from 1970-75. During that time, he also earned his master’s degree in physical education from Ball State University. Mike and his wife, Jeanne, reside in Kettering and have two daughters, Jodie Beth and Nikki.

MEGAN PEASE

ASSISTANT ATHLETICS DIRECTOR/SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR Flyer student-athlete and administrator Megan Pease returned to UD in August 2008 when she was named Dayton’s Assistant Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator. Pease was a standout volleyball player from 1999 to 2003 at the University of Dayton. After graduation, she first worked in the Athletics Division as UD’s Compliance Coordinator for all 17 Flyer sports teams from 2004 to 2006. She assisted UD’s Associate Director of Athletics in all areas of NCAA and A-10 regulations. She then was Dayton’s Assistant Director of Marketing for one year before taking a position with Paychex, Inc. in Dayton. While working in the UD athletics administration, she also served as the Faculty Advisor for the Flyer Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

Pease came to UD following a prep career that concluded with her being named the Ohio Division I Player of the Year in 1998 at Mansfield (OH) Madison High School. She was part of a UD volleyball program that won 102 matches, including an A-10 Regular Season Championship in 2001 and UD’s first-ever A-10 Tournament title in 2003.

Pease holds two degrees from the University of Dayton. She earned her Bachelor’s in Management Information Systems (with a minor in Operations Management) in 2003, and her MBA (specialization in Marketing) in 2004.

She was a senior leader of the Flyer team that won UD’s first-ever NCAA Tournament match with a stunning. five-game upset of host Michigan State. She was a three-time recipient of the Dr. R. Elaine Driedame Coach’s Award. As a junior and senior, she was the president of UD’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

During her first stint at Dayton, Pease implemented the community service element of the NCAA Life Skills program at the University of Dayton, the successful initial marketing of the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional at UD Arena, and the monitoring of squad lists, initial eligibility and continuing eligibility for UD’s nearly 400 student-athletes.
