MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
A CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION Over the years, the University of Dayton cross country team has produced All-Conference runners and has had Summa Cum Laude graduates. From Academic All-Americas to winning the Cross Country Only National Championship, the UD men’s cross country team prides itself on excelling both in the classroom and on the course. The 2010 men’s cross country team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 15th consecutive year.
Its recent graduates have gone on to be successful in many professions – engineers, dentists, teachers, naval pilots, doctors, personal trainers and self-employed computer consultants are among an extensive lists of fields for which UD cross country alums can be found. At the same time, these graduates still maintain their lifelong love of running, competing and finishing marathons – such as Boston and Chicago – along with local weekend races. How did the University of Dayton and the cross country program shape their lives? Here are selected Flyer alum and their thoughts:

UD MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

“The University of Dayton and the cross country program helped me with the tools to develop a great career and life. The faculty is innovative, informed and relevant. They have continued to be an invaluable resource long past my graduation. The same and more can be said of the cross country team, which created a deep sense of community and accomplishment. The team has given me friendships I will have for life. Cross country helped me perpetuate this lifelong running habit of mine! UD is a great school. You will be glad that you picked it.” – Jeff Jones ’99 (Visual Communication Design, Senior Graphics Designer, Wright State University)
– Tom Stocker ’96 (Two-Time Team MVP) (Mechanical Engineer, Robotics Engineer, Combined Technologies Group)
“Next to marrying my wife, choosing to attend the University of Dayton was the best decision I made in my life. Academically, the faculty and staff did everything they could to prepare me for my career and life after graduation. I was never just a number. The same applied to my experience as a UD student-athlete. Everyone from Coach Davis, to the athletic administration did so much to make every athlete feel important and make us successful. Of all things that I learned at UD, the most important was how to effectively serve as a leader in my community.” – Tim Mulligan (“High Flyer” and Team MVP 2002, Most Improved Runner 2000) (High School Teacher and Coach in New Jersey)
“Deciding to run at UD was the single most exciting choice I have ever made. Through example and constructive guidance, I learned from the coaches and older runners the success that results from discipline and attention to detail. My running was taken to a place I had previously thought was out of reach. I left UD a much different person that when I arrived, equipped with the tools to succeed in a dynamic world I feel very fortunate to continue to be part of something very special.”

“The University of Dayton provided me with an opportunity to run cross country at the Division I level and attain an education that is second to none. During my years as a Flyer, I was able to improve my times each season due to individual training that the coaches had geared towards me. That enabled me to achieve my optimum performance while competing and beating schools from the MAC, Big Ten, and SEC. In addition, the education I received has been key to where I stand professionally today. At UD, I valued the benefits of a large school while being treated like an individual from the staff and professors. The cross country team is like a family and I still stay in close touch with everyone I ran with.”

2010 In his senior year as a Flyer, Chris Lemon continued to be the focal point for UD cross-country. Named a team captain and MVP, Lemon handed in the top UD time at each. At the Flyer 5K, Chris set a course meet record with a time of 14:45 while helping his team to a 2nd place finish. Shortly after, at the Mel Brodt Invite 8K, with a 24:13 time. At the All-Ohio Championships 8K, Chris set yet another course record, this time at 24:11. Chris was named to the All Great Lakes Regional Team, and he set a team 10K record of 30:31, helping him finish 5th in a field of 217 runners. Lemon qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championships, where he finished 13th out of 38 individual qualifiers, and 84th out of 255 overall runners. Chris became the only Flyer to finish 1st (2009) or 2nd (2010) overall in the A-10 Championships. Adding to Chris’ 2010 accolades, ESPN The Magazine named Chris to the “Academic All-American”/2nd team. Finally, for the 2nd consecutive season, Lemon’s hard work inside the classroom earned him the title of Atlantic 10 “Student-Athlete of the Year.”
2009 Lemon spent his junior year resetting the program 8K record for a second and third time, as well as claiming the first-ever Atlantic 10 individual crown in team history. Lemon won the conference championship on a muddy day, in a time of 26:13, which helped the Flyers finish third overall – the best finish in program history. In the
team’s second race, the Mel Brodt Invitational, Lemon re-broke his own school record from 2008 with a time of 24:08. Two meets later, at the Notre Dame Invitational, he would do it again and set the bar at a new low point of 24:05. The zippy junior also led UD in every single race during the 2009 season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Runner for the second consecutive year. On top of all that, Lemon was a hard worker in the classroom and was honored as the conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year, as well as UD’s male Presidential Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
2008 To say Chris Lemon had a breakout sophomore season would be an understatement. During the 2008 fall season, the fleet-footed second year runner teamed up with brother, Matt, to become the first Flyers to ever qualify for the NCAA National Championship meet. Chris began the season strong by leading the Flyers at the Meijer Flyer 5K, in which he placed fifth overall in a time of 15:41. He would lead the Flyers in five of eight races overall. Chris set the 8K school record at the Atlantic 10 Championships (24:11), which earned him All-Conference honors for the first time. At the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals, Lemon placed third - the best ever finish by a Flyer runner at that event - before running the fastest 10K time in school history at the NCAA National Championships (30:55). Although Lemon finished 102nd at the national meet, it was a season without precedent for any Flyer. He was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Sept.
29, as well as being named to the Atlantic 10 Men’s Cross Country All-Academic Team, and as icing on the cake, Chris added the team’s White-Allen Most Valuable Runner award to his coffer.
2007 Chris Lemon placed seventh overall to open the season at the Flyer 5K, and would only improve throughout the fall. He took fourth place overall at the next meet, the National Catholic Invitational, in a Flyer freshman record time of 24:59. Lemon established himself by finishing as Dayton’s second man in four of the final five meets of the season, including at the Atlantic 10 Championships where he finished 26th overall. To round out the year, Lemon posted a time of 32:04 at the NCAA Regional, good enough for third all-time on the school’s 10K list. Chris established three All-Time 8K Performances in program history and a third place Harrier Hero ranking during his freshman campaign.
HIGH SCHOOL Owns the sixth fastest 5k senior time in Ohio at 15:44 (one second behind his brother, Matt Lemon)... Placed sixth at the 2006 D-I Cross Country Championships...Earned a 2nd and 4th place finishes at the D-I Track and Field Championships (4:13 1600meter and 9:15 in 3200 meter)...His best 5k cross country time stands at 15:30.

2010 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW
The Flyers once again started their season hosting the Flyer 5k. The team placed second overall with 34 points while they were able to capture the top two individual spots as Chris Lemon and Matt Lemon placed first and second respectively. Red shirt sophomore Greg Roeth placed eighth to make three Flyers in the top ten. The second meet would prove to be a success for UD as they ran away with the team title at the Mel Brodt Invitational. The team scored 23 points and placed all five scorers in the top ten. Chris Lemon placed first for the second straight week and his brother Matt Lemon was a close second. Jeremy Schiele, Kyle Lowry and Nate Addessi rounded out the scoring for the Flyers as they placed fifth, sixth and ninth respectively. UD continued to impress as the next week they were able to place second at the National Catholic Invitational. The team was once again led by Chris Lemon who won his third straight race. The team also benefited by great performances by Matt Lemon (6th), Greg Roeth ( 13th), Kyle Lowry (22nd) and Jeremy Schiele (34th). Dayton placed second once again in their next meet as they competed in the All-Ohio Championships. Chris Lemon continued his undefeated streak placing first with a course record time of 24:11. Matt Lemon finished fourth with an impressive 24:28 time and Greg Roeth cut 22 seconds of his personal best to finish in eleventh with a time of 24:55. This was the first time three Flyers have ever been under 25 minutes in the same race.

The next meet was the NCAA Pre-Nationals. This was a meet that gathered some of the most talented teams across the nation. The team finished in a tie for 21st. They were able to beat Michigan, Marquette and Ohio by time. All of these teams were ranked ahead of them in the region. Dayton would next travel to Pittsburgh for the Atlantic 10 Championships. The team would run well placing fourth overall. Chris Lemon was able to place second in the race earning All-Conference honors. His twin brother Matt also earned All-Conference honors as he crossed the line in fourth place. Greg Roeth was the third Flyer to garner All-Conference honors as he finished in eighth place. He also had the fastest time in his class for the second consecutive year.

The 2010 University of Dayton cross country team had arguably one of the best seasons in school history on an individual and team level, as they were led by head coach Rich Davis for the 14th year.
DOUG NORRIS was named the team’s Most Improved Runner in 2010
UD would finish out the season running in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional race for a chance to move on to the NCAA Championships. They finished 13th out of 31 teams. Chris Lemon continued his great season as he individually earned a berth to the NCAA Championships and All-Region honors by crossing the line in fifth place breaking his own 10k record with a time of 30:31. He would go on to the NCAA Championships and place 84th overall and 13th out of the individuals. Dayton welcomes back an array of talent next fall including All-Conference performer Greg Roeth and a plethora of runners ready to make their mark on the program. The team hopes to maintain its role as one of the most successful programs in the Atlantic 10.

The course is very spectator-friendly. By moving about the small area between the pond, track and picnic shelter, spectators are able to view the runners starting, finishing and throughout each of the three miles of racing.
: : F LY E R T R A D I T I O N : :
The essence of the meet is to give an early season racing opportunity to the teams of Southwest Ohio. The race also features several area Division I and III institutions. The Flyers have won the event four times, while placing second three times.
YEAR-BY-YEAR INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
The 5,000-meter course is grass covered with some wooded trails and is relatively flat. There is one hill (to be run twice) and a small creek to jump near the finish.
FLYER 5K CHALLENGE HISTORY
2010-2011
Since 1999, the Flyer 5K Challenge has been the premier early season meet that features the Division I programs in Southwest Ohio: Dayton, Miami, Cincinnati, Xavier and Wright State, along with several area Division II and III institutions. The only home meet on the UD schedule, Kettering’s Indian Riffle Park has served as the venue since the meet’s inception.
