UD SOFTBALL STADIUM THE HOME OF FLYER SOFTBALL GETS A FACELIFT
The University of Dayton Softball Complex will have a new look for the 2010-2011 school year. The upgrades include a new locker room, fixed seating, and a press box that will allow the Flyers to video stream a number of games from the stadium starting this year. The
renovations
usher
in
an
improved
atmosphere for fans and players, and continues to make the UD Softball Complex one of the top softball facilities in the region. Among one of the top changes is the addition of a locker room for the softball team. The batting cages will be expanded and upgraded and permanent restrooms will be installed. These new additions complement the stadium’s already existing bullpen, batting cages and pitching rubbers that were installed in the first phase of the project.

The project represents the next phase of the softball complex, which was built in 2005 along the banks of the Great Miami River as part of the UD Sports Complex – a multi-million dollar project to centralize the softball, track and field, football and baseball facilities on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard. Construction on this phase is expected to be finished by the time the fall season begins in September. “We are fortunate to have one of the best facilities in the region,” said Flyer Head Coach Cara LaPlaca. “Our idyllic location in the Arena Sports Complex along I-75 offers easy accessability. The river backdrop provides a picturesque view. The field surface is flawless and holds up to various weather conditions. Teams and spectators will have a great experience at UD Softball Stadium.”

THE UNIVERSITY UD is a beautiful place, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects that tapped UD as one of the most significant campus sites in the country. Just 22 campuses made the final list. Other Centennial Medal winners included the U.S. Capitol grounds, New York’s Central Park, and San Francisco’s Ghiradelli Square.
UD also was named one of the top “schools with the most beautiful campus in an urban setting” in the 2004 edition of The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges from Kaplan Publishing.

UD IS GROWING with the purchase of 49 acres between Brown Street and Great Miami River that will be used for academic and mixed-use development, expanding campus and drawing new jobs to the city of Dayton.
In the past five years, UD has built the $21 million Marianist Hall, a $25 million RecPlex, a $22 million science center and an $8.5 million ArtStreet with an amphitheater for on-campus performances. New development near UD Arena features a hotel and UD’s baseball, softball, track and football practice facilities.

The campus is gorgeous and not as confusing as many of the previous universities I had visited. I was attracted to this team because they not only strive for perfection on the field, but in the classrooms and communities as well. The University of Dayton has lived up to every expectation I had coming in. I do not regret my choice and would recommend this University to anyone who is interested in coming!”
KATHLEEN MALOOF | SOPHOMORE “I love it here at Dayton. The classroom sizes are small enough where you can develop a good relationship with your professors and they are more than willing to spend extra time with you outside of the class/lecture. The campus is not too small and not too big and all the buildings are relatively close which makes it easy to walk from class to class. Unlike high school, I have caught myself interested in the material taught and applying what I learn in class to my life. “

MOLLY MEYER | CLASS OF 2010 “Regardless of what sport I played, I would have come out of four years of being a college athlete with so many appealing character traits in the long-run: determination, trustworthiness, leadership, teamwork, and a hundred others that could be considered life-changers, and of course I’m grateful for that. But what I’m especially grateful for is the ability to call all of my UD softball teammates lifelong friends and a great deal of them my family. I suppose I would have made good friends where ever I went to college, but I would find it hard to believe that in an atmosphere outside of the University of Dayton community that those relationships would have matured into something as real as they are now. Family is really the only term I have strong enough to describe it. I’m stuck with them, and they’re stuck with me, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

CARA LaPLACA HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON
In a short amount of time Dayton Flyers head softball coach Cara LaPlaca has implemented a hard-working, successful culture of excellence with the UD Softball program.
CAREER RECORD Career: 182-227-1 (10th Season) UD: 51-101-1 (Fourth Season)
In 2010, LaPlaca saw her team continue to take shape as they improved in a number of offensive categories including runs (189), hits (341), doubles (60), home runs (28) and RBI (169). Senior Molly Meyer was selected to the Atlantic 10’s All-Conference Second Team. Her selection to the team capped the fourth consecutive year that she was honored by the A-10. LaPlaca mentored Meyer, helping her break a number of UD softball records. Meyer broke the single-season runs record (44) and career record (132). She set school records with 197 career hits and had 64 stolen bases in her career and 34 in a single season. Meyer also became Dayton’s first softball student-athlete to play internationally (Leksand, Sweden) after her playing career at UD. LaPlaca has also helped the Flyers continue a tradition of excellence with their rookies. Since 2006, Dayton has had at least one player named to the A-10’s All-Rookie Team, and freshman Kathleen Maloof continued that legacy in 2010. Additionally, three of UD’s selections to the all-rookie team have come under LaPlaca’s guidance. During the 2009 campaign, LaPlaca had three Flyers earn recognition on Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams. Lauren Nacke was named a First Team All-Conference selection and also earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team. Meyer was named Honorable Mention All-Conference, while Anne Maci and Meyer both earned spots on the Academic All-Conference Team. UD also succeeded in the classroom as well earning recognition nationally after being named to the Girls Got Game/NFCA AllAcademic Team. Dayton posted a team GPA of 3.238, which was the 49th best in the NCAA Division I category. The Flyers are one of two Atlantic 10 teams to make the top 100.

In her first season at the helm LaPlaca guided the Flyers to their first 20-win campaign in three years and more than doubled their Atlantic 10 win total from a season ago. In addition, LaPlaca’s 20 wins was the most by any first-year head coach at UD. A vast majority of the team numbers improved including batting average, hits, runs scored, on-base percentage, fielding percentage, sacrifices, home runs and slugging percentage. Aside from the successes on the field, LaPlaca’s teams also thrive in the classroom and in the community. Catcher Laura Matthews earned a second-team selection on the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball Team. The senior catcher became the 76th Academic All-American overall and 29th in the last seven years at UD. The honors didn’t stop there as Matthews and pitcher Erin LaFayette were selected members of the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Softball selections. Freshman shortstop Emily Stegeman received a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and Meyer picked up an Honorable Mention selection. LaPlaca was named head softball coach for the University of Dayton in July 2007 and joined the Flyer staff after six years at Clarke College. In her six years at Clarke, she had been instrumental in the program’s success. LaPlaca guided the Crusaders to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, the Crusaders made a first-ever NCAA tournament berth claiming the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Championship and winning a school record 27 games. Since her arrival the team had five consecutive 20-plus win seasons.
Under her reign, the Crusaders produced 28 AllConference honorees, six NFCA All Region honorees, and one Conference Player of the year. In addition, four out of her six years the team was ranked in the Top 25 Nationally in grade point average by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. LaPlaca was a 2007 NCAA Association of Division III Independents Coach of the Year runner-up and was named the NIIC Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. In addition to her coaching responsibilities at Clarke, she was also the Mental Health Counselor and served as the Senior Women’s Administrator. LaPlaca has extensive camp and clinic experience in multiple settings. She directed the highly successful Clarke softball instructional clinics and hitting leagues. She served as an instructor and evaluator at the 2007 TPS Top 96 College Coaches Softball Clinics in Virginia and Illinois. Under her direction, the Flyers softball clinics and summer academy have begun to see high levels of participation. LaPlaca oversaw the 2008 Ohio TPS Top 96 College Coaches Softball Clinic, as the University of Dayton was named as the host site. LaPlaca is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and a 2008 graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy. A 1999 graduate of Clarke College, LaPlaca earned her degree in psychology and was a student-athlete standout as a two-time first-team Northern Illinois - Iowa Conference Selection. In addition, she earned MVP honors and served as team captain for the Crusaders. In 2002, she earned her Masters of Education in counseling from Western Illinois University. LaPlaca, her husband Michael and daughter Austyn, currently reside in Kettering, Ohio.

SARAH HARMAN ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON
Sarah Harman enters her third season as assistant coach of the University of Dayton Flyers. “We are excited to add Sarah Harman to our coaching staff. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be a valuable addition to our program,” said University of Dayton head softball coach Cara LaPlaca. “Coach Harman has a proven record for developing top level pitching staffs. She will be instrumental in continuing to build on the softball tradition at UD.” A native of Port Clinton, Ohio, Harman returns to her home state after coaching stints in Texas, Virginia and Indiana. She joined the Flyers after serving as an assistant coach and lecturer at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. Harman joined West Texas A&M prior to the 2007-08 academic year as the softball program’s first full-time assistant coach. She worked primarily with the pitching staff, planning and implementing the training of the pitchers and catchers. She also assisted in marketing of home games to generate more attendance by designing an overall plan for home stand games which included local sponsors, gate giveaway and on-field promotions. Harman headed the “Paint the Yard Pink” promotion, a breast cancer awareness game to raise money for research. Harman was on the games committee of the 2008 NCAA Division II Softball World Series, acting as a game liaison for the Mid-Atlantic region representative. Prior to joining the Lady Buff staff, Harman spent two seasons as an assistant softball coach at Norfolk State University, focusing on the pitching staff. Previously, Harman was a graduate assistant coach at Ball State University, where she worked with the pitchers. Harman brings a stellar record of experience, including a standout career at Division III Defiance College where she played for four
10
seasons (2000-03) for Defiance Head Coach and UD alumna Kary (Zimmerman) Kankey (’98). She earned Heartland Collegiate Conference All-Conference first team honors three years she played. A standout pitcher at Defiance, Harman holds school records for innings pitched (665.1) and games started (103). She is second all-time in strikeouts (381) and third in school history in complete games (72), wins (39) and shutouts (8). She holds the second, seventh and eighth-highest single-season strikeout totals in the program’s history. Harman was named the team MVP her junior and senior seasons, and was named the Defiance Purple and Gold Sportsmanship Female Athlete of the Year in 2003. Harman, who also played volleyball at Defiance, earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management with a minor in recreation in 2003. She graduated with a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from Ball State in 2005. While at Ball State, Harman was a recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. Harman is a 2008 graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy and is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She was inducted into Port Clinton High School’s Hall of Fame on May 8, 2010.
BARRY REED VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH 12TH SEASON
Barry Reed is a veteran of the Flyer coaching staff and is entering his 12th season as an assistant coach at UD. Reed will primarily work with the outfield. Coach Reed brings with him 17 years of coaching experience from the high school level. He started coaching in 1975 for West Carrolton High School earning two league championships, four district titles, and one regional championship along the way. He began his softball career in the military and afterwards, continued his playing career independently.
Barry is retired from EG&G where he was the manager of employee relations. Reed is also a former professor at the University of Dayton where he taught business management and engineering classes. He and his wife, Amy, have three children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. They reside in Springboro, Ohio.
KATIE CAMPBELL VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON
University of Dayton softball Head Coach Cara LaPlaca announced the addition of Katie Campbell to the Flyer coaching staff for the 2010-11 season. Campbell joins Assistant Coach Sarah Harman and Volunteer Assistant Barry Reed. “We are excited to add Katie Campbell to our coaching staff,” LaPlaca said. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. She strongly supports the values and mission of the University of Dayton. Her international experience is also a wonderful addition to our staff.”

She joins the UD softball program as an experienced player and coach, lettering four years combined for Northwestern University and the University of Kansas from 1998 to 2002. In addition, Campbell was a former assistant coach at Wright State and Central High School in Clifton, Ill. Prior to her time at Central High School, she served as a volunteer assistant for the University of Virginia. Campbell, a native of Ashkum, Ill., earned her bachelor of science in physical education from Kansas, and was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection during her playing career. Campbell also works with Athletes in Action a Christian sports ministry in Xenia, Ohio in the Humanitarian Aid and Partnernship Department working with AIA’s international sports teams. She also taught health and physical education internationally in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and at The American School in Switzerland (TASIS).

2010 Smacked seven home runs throughout the season which gave her the UD record for career homeruns…against IPFW Nacke crushed two home runs going 2-for-3 and recording three RBI…she started in all 55 games as the designated player… her 26 RBI and 8 doubles were the third highest on the team in each category…was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases…finished the season with a .267 average, which was boosted during the second half of the season when she had a .312 average…had an eight game hit streak late in the season including a 3-for-4 effort against Eastern Kentucky…recorded 9 games with two or more hits and batted above .500 13 times…only 18 games when she didn’t reach base safely at least once.
