The Flyers and third-year head coach Cara Clark-LaPlaca are aiming to continue the momentum from the final month of 2009 when UD got rolling. The Flyers went 4-2 in their last six games in April and outscored opponents 43-37. For the second consecutive season the Flyers posted at least seven wins in Atlantic 10 play, more than doubling the amount the season before ClarkLaPlaca took over the program. Also, for the second straight season, UD was in contention to make the A-10 Championship in the final week of play. “The team is embracing this season as a continuation of last year. We really peaked through the month of April,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We were above .500 for that last part of the season and we feel like we have some unfinished business. Our focus is continuing that momentum and not to miss a beat as we open up this season.” Dayton returns 10 starters from last year’s team, including their No. 1 and No. 2 pitchers. The Flyers also have four talented freshmen joining the mix. “Our expectations are high for this season because we have the majority of our starters returning, which is exciting,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We’ve added a group of freshmen that we think can contribute immediately and added depth in some key positions for us.” THE SENIORS The Flyers are led by a quartet of seniors who have been starters since they joined the program as freshmen three years ago; outfielder Molly Meyer, infielder Anne Maci, pitcher Eva Rappe and catcher Megan Lee (who could also see time in outfield).

“The seniors provide a tremendous amount of leadership, experience and guidance. They really are the glue that holds our team together,” said ClarkLaPlaca. “They each play different positions. We have a pitcher, catcher, infielder and outfielder. We have a senior voice at every part of the field and every part of the lineup which is key for providing guidance to our younger players.” Meyer, recently named to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Top 30, was third in the Atlantic 10 in batting average (.364) last year. She was also third in runs scored, her 46 setting a UD single season record. Meyer also shattered the career record with 99 runs scored, breaking the old mark of 91, and will build on that mark this season. She was fourth in triples (3) and fifth in doubles (13). She has been a fixture in center field for the Flyers, starting 132 games in her career. Maci was 11th in the A-10 with a .319 batting average last season. She is a versatile athlete who has filled in at shortstop, first and third during her career in which she has played 124 games.

THE PITCHERS The UD pitching corps includes Rappe, sophomore Sarah Wedel and freshman Amanda Daly.

“We are going to be the most solid at the corners. We have good size, good strength and overall quickness. They are going to be the anchors for our infield. They have good range and can cover ground.”

“We have two returning pitchers with experience and one newcomer that we expect to be in the mix right away,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “They will be able to throw longer innings and more complete games. The biggest growth this season will be in our pitching staff. Coach (Sarah) Harman has brought expertise and we’ve seen so much development under her direction.”

THE MIDDLE INFIELDERS Junior Emily Stegeman, a 2008 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection, has started 77 games at shortstop. A knee injury only allowed her to start in 26 last year, and then Maci stepped in for the Flyers. Sophomore Megan Barrett saw time at second and outfield for UD last season. Freshman Carlyn Harlow will also be in the mix.

THE CATCHERS Sophomore Courtney Kutsulis earned most of the starts behind the plate last year and fellow freshman Raime Cronkhite also saw time there. Lee will also provided leadership behind the plate.

“We are excited about our middle infield. We have an untested freshman who comes from a great program and has great skills so we expect to see her compete early on in our season for play-

“The outfield is probably the best this program has ever seen. They’re quick, they’re deep, they’re smart, they have good arms and all four are interchangeable,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We will see a lot of success from our outfield. Opponents will have a hard time finding a hole in the grass. They can cover a lot of ground.” THE OFFENSE Last season, Dayton had one of the most potent and balanced offenses in the Atlantic 10. Dayton led the Atlantic 10 in sacrifice bunts (46), was third in slugging percentage (.376) and home runs (26), and fourth in on-base percentage (.338). Nacke, named the 2009 First Team All-Atlantic 10 designated player, was second in the A-10 with her 10 home runs, just two shy of the UD single season record. “Our offense has the potential to be one of the most dominating and powerful in the conference,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We certainly will score some runs with the combination of speed, ability to get on base and take extra bases. The returning power should be solid up and down the lineup.”

:: THE UNIVERSITY :: :: HISTORY :: :: SEASON IN REVIEW ::

“We just have a lot more depth and a lot more experience this year,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We look at our sophomore class as veterans. We really expect to see a lot from that group.”

THE OUTFIELDERS Meyer, named senior captain, is the anchor of the Dayton outfield, playing in center. Junior Alicia Nichols started 37 games in left field last year. They are joined by freshmen Kathleen Maloof and Shelby Pohlman.

:: THE FLYERS ::

THE UNDERCLASSMEN Last year the Flyers started five to six freshmen in a game. That group accounted for 17 of the 26 Flyer home runs in 2009.

THE CORNERS Maci, along with sophomores Brandy Brown and Lauren Nacke, provide great strength and balance at first and third for the Flyers. Maci has tallied 517 putouts over the last two seasons. Nacke led UD with 204 putouts, and also had the best fielding percentage for the Flyer infield (.973). Brown tallied 113 putouts and led the team in assists with 95.

ing time,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “Stegeman and Maci will provide balance and really solidify the shortstop position. With Barrett in the mix, we still have some competition for those spots and we’re looking to find who can be the everyday starter and who can be the most consistent.”

:: THE COACHES ::

After starting in right field the last two seasons, Lee will return behind the plate where she played her freshman season.

“Our catchers are solid. We have more experience behind the plate this year,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We had a freshman behind the plate in 95 percent of our starts last year. All three catchers are experienced and can be the general on the field to provide the vocal leadership that we need.”

:: FLYER SOFTBALL ::

Last season she stepped up her game during league play and was second with seven doubles in Atlantic 10 games. She was second for the Flyers in batting average (.319), doubles (10), putouts (195), RBI (29) and runs scored (21). She was clutch and hit a team-best clip of .411 with runners in scoring position, including .667 with the bases loaded, plus she hit safely in 18 of UD’s last 20 games. Rappe was third in the conference for appearances with 35 on the mound last season. She has struck out 163 in her career, including a personal best 75 in 2009.

“We’re excited about playing on our home field and in front of our home crowd,” said Clark-LaPlaca. “We have a competitive schedule and being able to play at home is a definite advantage. That’s especially true since we have one of the best facilities in the region and in the A-10.”

UD SOFTBALL STADIUM AT THE UD ARENA SPORTS COMPLEX

In 2005, the University of Dayton softball program played its first game in the new UD Softball Stadium. UD Softball Stadium is part of the UD Sports Complex, a multi-million dollar project located on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard near the UD Arena on the banks of the Great Miami River. The complex is comprised of the new UD Softball Stadium, Time Warner Cable Stadium (baseball), the Jerry Von Mohr Practice Facility (football, track & field), UD Arena (baseketball), and Welcome Stadium (football). UD softball stadium features dugouts, batting cages, bullpens with multiple pitching rubbers and a state-of-the-art natural grass playing surface. Future plans include grandstand seating, press box, concessions, team locker room and permanent restrooms. The unique location along the river offers fans scenic views of the river and Carrillon park while enjoying Dayton Flyers softball games. “We are fortunate to have one of the best facilities in the region. Our idyllic location in the Arena Sports Complex along I-75 offers easy accessibility. The river backdrop provides a picturesque view. The field surface is flawless and holds up to various weather conditions. Teams and spectators will have a great experience at UD Softball Stadium.” - HEAD COACH CARA CLARK-LAPLACA

COACHING CAREER

:: HISTORY ::

:: THE UNIVERSITY ::

SEASON AT UD............ > THIRD ALMA MATER.................... > CLARKE COLLEGE ‘99 In a short amount of time Dayton Flyers head softball coach Cara Clark-LaPlaca has implemented a hard-working, successful culture of excellence with the UD Softball program. During the 2009 campaign, Clark-LaPlaca had three Flyers earn recognition on the 2009 Atlantic 10 AllConference Teams. Lauren Nacke was named a First Team All-Conference selection and also earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team. Molly Meyer was named Honorable Mention All-Conference, while Anne Maci and Meyer both earned spots on the Academic All-Conference Team. UD also succeeded in the classroom as well earning recognition nationally after being named to the Girls Got Game/NFCA All-Academic Team. Dayton posted a team GPA of 3.238, which was the 49th best in the NCAA Division I category. The Flyers are one of two Atlantic 10 teams to make the top 100. In her first season at the helm Clark-LaPlaca guided the Flyers to their first 20-win campaign in three years and more than doubled their Atlantic 10 win total from a season ago. In addition, Clark-LaPlaca’s 20 wins was the most by any first-year head coach at UD. A vast majority of the team numbers improved including batting average, hits, runs scored, on-base percentage, fielding percentage, sacrifices, home runs and slugging percentage. Aside from the successes on the field, Clark-LaPlaca’s teams also thrive in the classroom and in the community. Catcher Laura Matthews earned a second-team selection on the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball Team. The senior catcher became the 76th Academic All-American overall and 29th in the last seven years at UD. The honors didn’t stop there as Matthews and pitcher Erin LaFayette were selected members of the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Softball selections. Freshman shortstop Emily Stegeman received a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and Meyer picked up an Honorable Mention selection.

Clark-LaPlaca was named head softball coach for the University of Dayton in July 2007 and joined the Flyer staff after six years at Clarke College. In her six years at Clarke, she had been instrumental in the program’s success. Clark-LaPlaca guided the Crusaders to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, the Crusaders made a first-ever NCAA tournament berth claiming the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Championship and winning a school record 27 games. Since her arrival the team had five consecutive 20-plus win seasons. Under her reign, the Crusaders produced 28 AllConference honorees, six NFCA All Region honorees, and one Conference Player of the year. In addition, four out of her six years the team was ranked in the Top 25 Nationally in grade point average by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Clark-LaPlaca was a 2007 NCAA Association of Division III Independents Coach of the Year runner-up and was named the NIIC Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. In addition to her coaching responsibilities at Clarke, she was also the Mental Health Counselor and served as the Senior Women’s Administrator. Clark-LaPlaca has extensive camp and clinic experience in multiple settings. She directed the highly successful Clarke softball instructional clinics and hitting leagues. She served as an instructor and evaluator at the 2007 TPS Top 96 College Coaches Softball Clinics in Virginia and Illinois. Under her direction, the Flyers softball clinics and summer academy have begun to see high levels of participation. Clark-LaPlaca oversaw the 2008 Ohio TPS Top 96 College Coaches Softball Clinic, as the University of Dayton was named as the host site. Clark-LaPlaca is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and a 2008 graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy. A 1999 graduate of Clarke College, Clark-LaPlaca earned her degree in psychology and was a student-athlete standout as a two-time first-team Northern Illinois - Iowa Conference Selection. In addition, she earned MVP honors and served as team captain for the Crusaders. In 2002, she earned her Masters of Education in counseling from Western Illinois University. She and her husband Michael currently reside in Kettering, Ohio.

We again had several All Conference honorees, including a 1st team AllConference recipient in Lauren Nacke. Nacke also earned 3 of the last 5 Rookie of the Week honors the close out the season. In addition, the UD Softball Team GPA again ranked our program nationally and 2nd in the A-10 Conference. What are the strong points of Dayton - both the university and the softball program? The University of Dayton is a top-notch institution. It is an incredible honor to be part of such a quality Athletics department and university. The leadership of university president Dr. Daniel Curran and Vice President and Director of Athletics, Tim Wabler has provided clear guidance and direction to the future of UD Athletics. We have outstanding facilities, prestigious academic programs, and passionate, supportive fans. There is a proud tradition here and we continue to build a brighter future. The University of Dayton Softball Program has yet to meet its true potential. The 2010 season will see the completion of the final stages of construction at UD Softball Stadium. The final phase will include the addition of permanent seating, press box, public restrooms and a team locker room. This project will also include updates to the stadium’s outdoor batting cage area. These improvements should enhance the spectator’s experience at our home events. Our affiliation with the Atlantic 10 Conference sets us apart from other area colleges and universities. This allows us the benefit of numerous local non-conference opponents while also having membership in a highly competitive conference. We are fortunate to be able to provide our players with the opportunity to experience historic and unique parts of the country through our A10 Conference travel.

Describe your style of offense. This year’s team will showcase an up-tempo explosive style of offense. We have an amazing balance of speed and power, which will allow individuals to play to their strengths. Opposing defenses will have to defend our speed game and yet be aware of the long ball threat throughout our line-up. Our offense has the potential to put a lot of runs on the board. Our long term success will be dependent on how players can adjust to their various roles during the course of the season. Describe the dynamics of your infield this season. Our infield will center around our battery where we return experience on the mound and behind the plate. We expect to be very solid on the corners where we also return experience, quickness and strength. Our depth up the middle will provide several possible combinations that will allow us some flexibility with the infield. This is a hardworking group that is defined by their remarkable fundamental skills and range. We look forward to this returning experience to provide leadership on and off the field. What highlights your 2010 outfield? This season we welcome back each of our starters in the outfield. We have also added two dynamic freshmen who will compete for time at the corner outfield spots. Our defensive speed in the outfield is likely the best in program history. The outfield unit this year has the potential to make game-changing plays at any moment. As a group they have strong, accurate arms and can track down any ball that is put into play. This is a talented group that will minimize the impact of an opposing offense.

We are excited about our pitching core for the 2010 season. This group has been making incredible strides in their overall development. Each has different strengths and will demonstrate a versatility that will keep opposing teams off balance. The gains in maturity and leadership within this pitching staff have been outstanding. Whoever has the ball in their hand will provide our team the fiery competitiveness that is necessary for success. Break

down the

2010

schedule and give your

thoughts.

The non-conference portion of our 2010 schedule is a balance of high quality tournaments and competitive doubleheaders. This combination will give us the level of competition that is needed in order to meet our season goals and expectations. We open the season in early February once again which allows us to utilize the full span of allowable competition dates. This early preparation provides us the opportunity to play games sooner than the majority of our conference opponents. Our early travel schedule takes us to different regions of the country and matches us against a variety of competition. We then have a significant homestand from Mid-March through the end of the month. Our stadium is one of the best facilities in the A-10. We are excited to play so much in front of our home crowd. The goal each year is to continue to peak into and throughout the Conference season. We want to be playing our best softball in April and May so we create a schedule early in the season that can help us build to our goals. Overall our schedule is balanced and competitive. The experienced starters we return this year will be key to having consistent team success and taking this program to new heights.

and provide us with depth that will be critical for endured success over a long season. We expect them to make significant contributions both on offense and defense.

:: SEASON IN REVIEW ::

There were several key moments in our 2009 season. We opened the year at some highly competitive tournaments where we faced very strong opponents. Despite our youth and inexperience we began to see steady improvement throughout the early part of the season. We were fortunate that our group was tested early and often, which helped us prepare for our rigorous A10 Conference season. During the conference season we saw our team continue to steadily peak. Winning a sweep at St. Bonaventure and key road wins at Temple and St. Joseph’s showed that our team can come from behind at times and score a lot of runs to secure victories. We were again in contention to qualify for the A10 Conference tournament through the final weekend of regular season play. Overall we saw tremendous growth and improvement of our squad. Our young players gained valuable experience and will return to the field this year with more confidence and poise. We look to simply pick up where we left off in full stride.

The strength of this group is the returning experience. We have the majority of our starters returning this season and the leadership of our upperclassmen has been significant. We again feature a solid balance of speed and power. Our pitching staff has been making considerable gains and we expect to see more leadership from the mound this year. The offensive attack of this group will be fast-paced and explosive. We also anticipate another year of fundamental defensive play, which has become a cornerstone of the program. We expect to see early success throughout our non-conference schedule that will lead us into the competitive A10 schedule with momentum.

FROM T H E I R

PERSPECTIVE Freshmen and seniors on the University of Dayton softball team recount what made them choose to play for the Flyers and reflect on their experience with the softball team.

LOOKING FORWARD Because I live so far away, I knew that the University of Dayton had to be a type of school I could really imagine myself living at for the next four years of my life. The University of Dayton looks great on paper, with its solid engineering program, small class sizes and impressive tutoring program. When I came on my official visit last year, I saw the whole other side of campus though. I noticed the all around happiness the students seem to possess here. The campus is gorgeous and not as confusing as many of the previous universities I had visited. I met the team, and they were really nice and welcoming. They made me feel at home although I’m sure they barely could even pronounce my name at the time. I really could see myself being a part of the roster from the get-go. What else attracted me to this team was the fact that they not only strive for perfection on the field, but in the classrooms and communities as well. The facilities here at the University of Dayton are phenomenal, from the dorms to the Rec Plex. Also, I love the idea of playing for a team where the coaches notice your hard work and dedication instead of only playing those who have been on the team the longest. So far, the University of Dayton has lived up to every expectation I had coming in. I do not regret my choice and would recommend this University to anyone who is interested in coming!

CARYLYN HARLOW Freshman ‘10

I chose the University of Dayton not only because it is a really good school to get a good education, but because the environment is very different from the other colleges that I visited. The campus is one of a kind, it’s really beautiful all year round especially in the fall with all of the beautiful colors. The University of Dayton is almost like it’s own community. All of the people here are super nice and welcoming. My experience at UD has been really great, I’ve met a ton of new and different people and it helps that the university has a variety of majors that UD offers. Being an athlete has a lot of advantages at UD too, because the athletic department offers a lot of resources that help you a lot. They really try to emphasize how important it is to be a successful student is before being an athlete. They really want you to progress in your sport as well as in classes. The University of Dayton is such a unique place and by coming here I feel like I am a part of that uniqueness.

I love it here at Dayton. The classroom sizes are small enough where you can develop a good relationship with your professors and they are more than willing to spend extra time with you outside of the class/lecture. The campus is not too small and not too big and all the buildings are relatively close which makes it easy to walk from class to class. Unlike high school, I have caught myself interested in the material taught and applying what I learn in class to my life. The cafeterias also have a great variety of food which is great because that is where freshman tend to eat all of their meals.

Freshman ‘10

KATHLEEN MALOOF Freshman ‘10 I chose the University of Dayton because of the campus. On my official visit I fell in love with everything here and I also got a scholarship for softball to play here. My experience here has been like nothing else, I absolutely love it here and couldn’t be happier!

AMANDA DALY

I honestly had never really heard of the University of Dayton prior to being recruited to play softball; I was a public school kid looking to continue her career at another big public school. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Stepping onto Dayton’s campus for the first time was an eye opener. The students were some of the happiest and most welcoming people I had ever met, and going to UD has only reinforced that initial impression. The word community is thrown around here a lot, and as cheesy as it sounds, that’s exactly what UD is to me. We take care of each other, we’re friendly to each other, no house is a stranger’s house… it’s really hard to describe unless you’ve been lucky enough to experience it yourself, which, thankfully, I have been. I wouldn’t trade my four years at UD for anything.

Being a part of the University of Dayton is a family tradition. My sister is a student here and my mom has been an employee for a number of years. It was always my dream to be a Flyer. My teammates are some of my best friends. We are a close group who has a lot of fun together, while working hard to achieve our goals. Over the past four years I have been able to grow as a player by further developing my skills with the help of my coaches and teammates. We are a solid team offensively and defensively. We have become fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game (offense and defense). The skills we have will take us to where we want to go and I am extremely confident that with the team we have now we will be able to achieve it.

The softball team has shown promise over the past four year. Although our record would indicate otherwise, we have had great success on and off the field. We are a team with a lot of talent and chemistry. We are a team who has a lot of tradition, but is also striving to make winning a regular part of that tradition. We are attempting to use the gifts we were given to get us where we want to go. I know that it is not an overnight process to turn a program around, but I am blest that I could even be the tiniest part of what is to come for this program.

:: FLYER SOFTBALL ::

Oh the things I wish I had known my freshman year… With four years of softball to look forward to, it’s hard to imagine what it’s going to be like at the end of the road. Well, here I am. The end is upon me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group to ride out with. Over the past four years, I’ve had the pleasure of playing alongside some of the most genuine people I will ever meet, and I am proud to call them my friends. Between all of the practices, bus rides, airport adventures, pasta nights, and early morning lifting sessions, you would think that I would have gotten sick of seeing the same faces all day every day. But I haven’t. It amazes me that each year I find myself becoming closer and closer to people stemming from all over the country. It also makes me sad to know that my stint here is coming to a close. I would equate the evolution of the softball program over the past four years with the evolution of myself in the same amount of time. I came in fresh and talented, but awkward and unaware of what I was up against, or what I was capable of doing for that matter. Over time, and with a little help, I was able to develop my strengths and grow into the kind of person I had always wanted to be. Our program has gone through the same transition. It has had all the necessary pieces for the past four years; the difference is we are finally ready to put them all together. I look back on the last four years of my life and know that as sad as I am for it to end, I look forward to my final days as a University of Dayton student-athlete and beyond.

ton because of its heritage. I have known many outstanding people who have graduated from UD, and they all rave about the wonderful community. The Marianist community atmosphere is unlike any other campus. The school provided a welcoming place for me to grow by giving me a first class education; giving me opportunities to lead, serving others, and advancing my spiritual growth through fellowship. The school granted me opportunities anywhere I was willing to look for them. Over my four years, I still don’t even think I have scratched the surface of activities, clubs, and events to be a part of while at school. However, I was still able to be a part of many tremendous experiences while attending the University of Dayton.

A GLANCE BACK

I became familiar with the University of Dayton through a friend from high school (now a 2009 UD graduate) with several UD alumni in her family. During my official visit, I fell in love with the campus and overall atmosphere of the University. I was also excited to learn about the University of Dayton’s outstanding teacher education program. I was eager to move away from home and try something a little different than rural South Carolina, although I was not aware just how different the weather would be! Each year on the softball team has been memorable and special in its own way. Newcomers have added new dimensions to the team over the years and graduates have left behind legacies and lessons to pass on. Each year, our team has been not only dedicated to perfecting fundamentals, but also to playing each opportunity that we have with true passion and motivation. Struggles and triumphs have been the foundation of a special bond that I am happy to have been apart of as a member of the Flyer Softball Team.

2009 SEASON IN REVIEW

SOFTBALL ‘08

LAURA MATTHEWS SOFTBALL ‘08

Being a Dayton Flyer Softball Member has allowed me to develop relationships that will last a life time. Being able to share so many experiences with an outstanding group of girls, will always be what I remember most. For four years they were my extended family. While playing my four years at the University of Dayton, I was able to learn about my limitations and how far I could push myself. I have learned hard work, dedication, perseverance, and that patience does pay off. Self discipline was always key; waking up for early morning lifting, practices, or meetings, wasn’t always fun but I was given an opportunity that many people in the country and even the world wish they could have and for that I am thankful. Being able to share such an experience not only as a collegiate athlete but also as a Dayton Flyer has allowed me to be proud of my team, their achievements and be proud of the University that has educated me to follow my dream of becoming a physical therapist. While at UD I grew as a person as well as mentally and spiritually. I will always be a proud member of the Dayton Flyer Family in past, present, and future.

Coach Clark values athleticism and competitiveness. Her style is fastpaced, aggressive, and disciplined. She believes that her players should be disciplined and fundamentally sound. Coach Clark also believes that the mental side of the game is just as important as the physical side and therefore challenges her players mentally every day in practice. Personally speaking, her emphasis on the mental side of the game helped me immensely in my own game.

:: SEASON IN REVIEW ::

MOLLIE SCHRANK

Coach Clark looks for competitiveness in her athletes and challenges them mentally and physically. Coach Clark stresses pride in putting on the UD uniform. She has the program moving in the right direction due to her dedication and competitive drive.

Being a University of Dayton softball player continues to have a huge influence on my life. I am currently working in the corporate world as a financial analyst and the lessons I learned from being a Flyer athlete help me every day at the office. At the risk of sounding too cliché, the lessons that I learned on the field help me every day in my job. Being a UD softball player taught me discipline, competitiveness, and how to deal with adversity. I honestly believe that playing softball at UD has given me a competitive edge in the workplace. In addition, I have also made friendships that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

:: THE FLYERS ::

Coach Clark’s philosophy is definitely to give 110 percent all the time and leave it all out on the field. She is incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of the game of softball. She knows how to push and motivate her players and embeds competitiveness in them. She is a remarkable coach and is going to change the way people look at Dayton softball.

Being a University of Dayton softball player has had a big impact on who I am and my path in life. During my time at UD, I developed lifelong friendships with many of my teammates and shared common experiences that I will never forget. I am now working as an assistant collegiate softball coach, and my experiences as a softball player at Dayton have provided me with lessons on how to relate to players so that I can help them reach their potential.

:: THE COACHES ::

Playing softball for the University of Dayton made an incredible impact on my life. Not only did it allow me to stand out and get involved outside of the classroom, but it taught me many life lessons that I will take with me now that I’ve graduated. Being a Division-I athlete teaches you commitment, hard-work, time management, community, respect, punctuality and so much more and I will take these attributes with me and use them for the rest of my life. Getting to play softball for the University of Dayton was an amazing opportunity and blessing for me and I wouldn’t be who I am today without it.

ADMINISTRATION DR. DANIEL J.CURRAN UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Daniel J. Curran is president of the University of Dayton, recognized as a top-tier national university and one of the 10 best Catholic universities in the country. The Philadelphia native became the University of Dayton’s 18th president and first lay leader on July 1, 2002. Dr. Curran is guiding the University of Dayton through transformational times. A new master plan will shape development on a campus that now spans to the Great Miami River. A new strategic plan will focus on strengthening the school’s distinctive Catholic and Marianist identity, diversifying the student body, internationalizing the curriculum, hiring nationally prominent faculty and building upon a learning-living environment that supports academic excellence. Under Dr. Curran’s leadership, the University of Dayton has enjoyed a 15 percent jump in first-year applications, record sponsored research dollars, increased national recognition — and tremendous momentum. In the past five years, the University started new exchange programs in China, established centers of excellence in nanotechnology and fuels and combustion, opened the Science Center and Innovation Center, built a sports complex, launched the nation’s first accelerated law curriculum and started a doctor of physical therapy program. In addition, UD opened the Dayton Early College Academy, a public high school on campus that prepares first-generation college students to earn a high school diploma and college credits at the same time. In the residential arena, UD constructed two facilities that combine living and learning — Marianist Hall, a residence hall with learning spaces, and ArtStreet, an imaginative housing and arts education complex in the University neighborhood. RecPlex, an ultramodern fitness and recreation complex, opened in 2006. In addition, UD teamed with commercial developers on two ventures: University Place, a two-story mixed-use development on the corner of Brown and Stewart streets that will include graduate apartments and retail outlets, and Courtyard by the Marriott at the University of Dayton, a hotel near UD Arena. As part of Citirama 2007, the Dayton Homebuilders Association built a five-house townhouse and renovated another four houses in the student neighborhood. Beyond the physical changes, the University of Dayton has grown in national stature under Dr. Curran’s leadership. A 2006 survey ranks UD first among Catholic universities and third overall for community revitalization initiatives. UD places second nationally in the amount of materials research it performs annually, according to the National Science Foundation. In the classroom, the entrepreneurship program ranks fifth in the nation, according to Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review. As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I board of directors, Dr. Curran helped shape academic reforms designed to improve the graduation rate of student-athletes. He has been named to its executive committee and Division I-AA/I-AAA Presidential Advisory Group. His other national board memberships include the Higher Learning Commission, part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In the Dayton region, he focuses on economic development and high-tech issues. He chairs the Wright Brothers Institute board and serves on nearly two dozen others, including the Dayton Development Coalition, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, National Composite Center and Miami Valley Research Foundation. In the state, the governor tapped him for the Ohio Aerospace and Advisory Council. The Dayton Development Coalition named Curran the Dayton region’s most outstanding volunteer citizen for 2006 for his efforts in securing more than $55 million in Ohio Third Frontier Project grants for the Miami Valley.

:: THE FLYERS ::

Most of Dr. Curran’s research has focused on ways to address social inequality. His prolific scholarly record includes eight books, most of which he co-authored with his wife, Claire M. Renzetti, a sociology professor at the University of Dayton. Theories of Crime: A Reader was published in 2003 and is now available in Polish and Czech. The two are working on updated editions of Women, Men and Society: The Sociology of Gender and Social Problems: Society in Crisis. In 1993, the University of Pittsburgh Press published his Dead Laws for Dead Men, a historical analysis of coal mine health and safety legislation.

:: FLYER SOFTBALL ::

A sociologist by training, Dr. Curran spent 23 years in various administrative and faculty positions at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, most recently as executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs. He’s a noted scholar in criminology, juvenile justice and social problems, with a deep interest in international issues.

:: THE COACHES ::

Colleagues praise him for his forward-thinking approach, dedication to the Marianist mission, energy, approachability and strong commitment to social justice.

40

His passion for social justice runs deep. At his presidential installation ceremony in April 2003, he noted that a Catholic university must be “a force for social change. As a community of learners and educators, we must analyze the causes of social injustice and educate professionals with a conscience.” He serves on the board of the Ohio Children’s Defense Fund. In 2005, he joined University of Dayton students on a relief trip to hurricane-stricken Mississippi. In 2002, he received the Eternal Flame Award, an international award given for “exceptional contribution to the field of Holocaust education.”

Before becoming a vice president at Saint Joseph’s University, Dr. Curran served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for four years. He started his academic career there in 1979 with a series of faculty positions in the department of sociology, including chair from 1988 to 1992. As a professor of sociology, he has taught courses in criminology, social problems, juvenile justice and white-collar crime. Dr. Curran also served as president of the faculty senate at Saint Joseph’s University. In 1990, he served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He held a concurrent professorship at Nanjing University in China. Dr. Curran earned a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in 1980 after receiving a master’s degree from Temple University in 1978 and a bachelor’s degree from Saint Joseph’s University in 1973 — all in sociology. Dr. Curran and his wife, Claire, have two sons, Sean and Aidan.

TIM WABLER

VICE PRESIDENT/ DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A former Flyer student-athlete himself, Tim Wabler is the seventh man to serve as the University of Dayton’s Director of Athletics. As UD’s Vice-President and Director of Athletics, Wabler is responsible for the oversight of 17 intercollegiate athletics programs, on-campus athletic facilities including Baujan Field and the Frericks Center, and the University of Dayton Arena with the surrounding Arena Sports Complex. Wabler first returned to the University’s Athletics Division as an administrator in 1993 as Associate Director Athletics. As Associate AD, Wabler worked in every area of athletics administration -- overseeing UD’s sports programs, student-athlete support services, development and major facility projects. Since Wabler has been part of the Dayton Athletics Division, the Flyers have experienced significantly improved competitive success. Since 1998, UD has had 32 conference championships and had 21 teams reach the post-season. In the nine years prior to 1998, the Flyers had only seven conference championships and one tournament appearance. The highlights include the following: Women’s soccer has earned five NCAA tournament appearances (including a berth in the “Sweet Sixteen” in 2001) and has won eight of the last 11 A-10 regular season championships. Women’s volleyball has earned four NCAA tournament appearances and has won nine A-10 titles (regular season and/or tournament). Men’s soccer has won five A-10 titles and played in the 2008 NCAA tournament. The baseball team’s record for wins in a season was 25 after the 2000 campaign -- since then UD has won at least 30 games five times. And the Flyer football team has won the Pioneer Football League championship nine times in the 16-year history of the league, and has taken home the 2002 and 2007 NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championships. As success on the field has improved, UD student-athletes have also performed in the classroom. The Flyers’ combined cumulative grade point average has risen to a school-record 3.209. UD has had 34 Academic All-Americans in the last eight years. Only Nebraska, Rensselaer Poly and Rice had more. The Flyers had three Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athletes in 2005-06, the most in school history. Dayton is consistently among the league leaders in placing student-athletes on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, even though the Flyers participate in fewer A-10 sports than all but one school. UD had the most players on the PFL Academic Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year in 2007. Wabler oversaw the Athletics Division’s efforts to provide top-notch facilities for the next generation of Flyer student-athletes with the creation of the Arena Sports Complex. Development of the Arena Sports Complex began with a $13 million renovation to the University of Dayton Arena, completed in 2002. Since then, the University has added a running track, the Jerry Von Mohr Football Practice Field, Time Warner Cable Stadium for baseball and a new softball stadium. Early in Wabler’s tenure, the Athletics Division built the $4.3 million Donoher Basketball Center, an addition to the UD Arena, to provide new facilities for men’s and women’s basketball and football. The entire facility, which was dedicated in June of 1998, was conceived, planned and completed in 20 months time. In those 20 months, the entire $4.3 million cost was paid for by charitable gifts to the University. On campus, renovations to Baujan Field (soccer) and the Frericks Center (volleyball) have improved those facilities to among the best in the Midwest. The latest step forward on campus is the renovation of the Athletics Practice Facility (formerly the Physical Activities Center) that provides much-needed indoor practice space for more than 400 Flyer student-athletes. The Collins Gymnasium now serves as the indoor practice home for all of UD’s outdoor sports, and the conversion of the Lackner Natatorium to a dedicated basketball-only practice facility was completed during the summer of 2007. Including the Arena Seating Plan, gifts to Athletics total over $4.5 million annually. Wabler, a Dayton native, is in charge of all coaches’ contracts for the Athletics Division, and manages radio and TV agreements. Wabler is also the administrator who oversees UD’s athletic fund-raising efforts and long-term finances. Radio and television agreements have been expanded to increase exposure for Flyer athletics. Dayton football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball games are heard internationally on the World Wide Web. UD football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games are also broadcast on News/Talk 1290 WHIO-AM and FM. Wabler has been actively involved in numerous A-10 Conference committees, including the Championships Review Committee, Baseball Committee and Soccer Committee. His committee work also extends to service to the University community. He currently serves on UD’s Campus Master Planning Committee, and has been a past member of UD’s Committee on Diversity in Community and Resource Allocation Steering Committee. Wabler is also an NCAA Peer Reviewer and a member of the Greater Dayton YMCA’s Board of Trustees. A 1974 graduate of UD’s School of Business Administration, Wabler has also completed the Sports Management Institute Executive Program. A former member of UD’s Athletic Board, Wabler was a four-year letterwinner and three-time Pitcher of the Year for UD. He served as team captain as a senior. A 1970 graduate of Chaminade High School in Dayton, Wabler is the first Dayton native to serve as the University’s Director of Athletics. Tim and his wife Arlene have two daughters, Sarah and Leigh Anne.

A storied football coaching career came to an end when Mike Kelly stepped down as head coach of the Flyers on January 22, 2008, but a new chapter began for Kelly and the University of Dayton Athletics Division when he took on the duties of Associate Athletics Director. A man who has dedicated his life to mentoring, Kelly will have no trouble stepping into his new expanded role. In addition to overseeing the departments of Academics, Athletics Communication and Equipment, he will serve as an adviser to up-and-coming coaches. The University’s past president, Brother Raymond L. Fitz, once said “I regard Mike Kelly as one of the best teachers the University of Dayton has.” Kelly developed innumerable players and coaches to experience success on the field and in life. Those teaching skills are just one of the many he possesses that make his transition to administration seamless. Kelly will draw from his nearly 40 years of coaching experience to develop UD’s young professionals. He will serve as a Sports Program Administrator (SPA) for football, baseball, track & field, women’s basketball and women’s cross country. A six-time PFL Coach of the Year, and seven-time national Coach of the Year, he spent 27 years as head coach of the perennial powerhouse Dayton Flyers football program. His management of his staff and players, and his day-to-day dealings with all the departments involved with supporting the program will serve him well in his role of Associate Athletics Director. In Kelly’s last season as head coach, the Flyers finished with an 11-1 record, clinched the Pioneer Football League, won the 2007 Gridiron Classic and were crowned NCAA FCS Mid-Major national champions. Kelly’s goal is to contribute to continue raising the bar in all areas of the University of Dayton Athletics Division. He’s shown, with his team’s successes on the football field, he can set it high. When he stepped down as UD’s football coach, he ended one of the winningest coaching careers in the history of college football, his career winning percentage of .819 the best of any active coach who had been in the profession 25 years or more. In addition to the 1989 NCAA Division III national title, Kelly’s Flyers were also NCAA FCS Mid-Major national champions (by a national poll) in 2002 and 2007. A true reflection of Kelly’s character is the way he operated the football program. Taking a stand on integrity has always been paramount in his philosophy and The Ohio High School Athletic Association took notice, honoring Kelly with the OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award, which is presented annually to an Ohioan who has displayed outstanding ethical behavior and integrity in performing his duties and is a role model for others. Some of the previous winners include: astronaut and former U.S. Senator John H. Glenn Jr., Archie Griffin, Wayne Embry, Bill Hosket, Jim Tressel and Clark Kellogg. In February of 2008, Kelly became the 150th member of one of UD’s most exclusive clubs, the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame, and was the sole inductee that year. His 27 years as head coach are the most of any UD coach in any sport.

Dr. Michael O’Hare, Professor of Physics and Professor of Electro-Optics, was named faculty representative to the NCAA in 1998. Dr. O’Hare has been in the Department of Physics at the University of Dayton since 1966 and served as chair of the department from 1983 to 2007. Dr. O’Hare has taught physics at all levels and has research experience in atomic, molecular, solid-state and optical physics. He has served as a consultant and visiting scientist to the Wright - Patterson Air Force Materials Laboratory. Most recently, Dr. O’Hare was a co-principal investigator on a NASA sponsored NOVA grant to design curricula for developing scientific literacy in preservice teachers. Dr. O’Hare’s duties as faculty representative to the NCAA include: taking an active role in the institutional control of the intercollegiate athletics program; representing a faculty viewpoint and faculty oversight and advice in the administration of the athletics program; involvement in the assurance of academic integrity of the athletics program and the maintenance of the welfare of the student-athletes; and monitoring of performance of the student-athletes. Dr. O’Hare and his late wife, Patricia, have four daughters, all of whom graduated from the University of Dayton.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

State-of-the-art conditioning centers, fully-equipped training rooms and full-time professionals combine to create a program for student-athletes that gives them a physical edge over the competition. Each UD team has a plan designed and administered by qualified professionals to meet the specific needs of their sport and style of play. All student-athletes perform basic strength training with a general emphasis on explosive lifts that involve as much of the body as possible. Conditioning programs are designed to prepare student-athletes for the specific metabolic demands of their sport. Core training, agility work and sport specific exercises are then incorporated into each program to prepare each student-athlete for competitive success. The UD strength & conditioning coaches work with our sports medicine staff to help reduce the risk of injuries and to efficiently return student-athletes to competition as quickly and as safely as possible following injury. With four staff members holding the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential, UD stays current on the latest research to ensure that our programs are among the best in the country. In addition, the UD strength and conditioning staff can provide assistance in eating strategies that will improve health and competitiveness of UD student-athletes. On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,162 student-athletes in the Fall 2008 while 1,164 were named to the Spring 2009 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2000-09, 182 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie, Christa Dominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure’s Katelyn Murray and David Zenk of George Washington received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 Conference had 50 teams among the 767 Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. This represents an increase of 16 teams from a year

Associate Commissioner......................Celene McGowan

2008-09 REVIEW For the 15th time in Conference history and sixth since 2000, the Atlantic 10 Conference earned multiple at-large berths to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament as league champion Temple was joined by Xavier and Dayton in the field of 65. The A-10 was the only non-BCS conference to earn multiple at-large bids. Xavier advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in six years and ended the year ranked 15th by ESPN/USA Today and 20th by the Associated Press. Duquesne and Rhode Island earned NIT bids, while Richmond reached the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational. Off the court, Commissioner McGlade announced that Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., would serve as the site of the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and that the finals will be televised on CBS Sports for the first time in league history.
