To say that the last year has been a whirlwind of activity would be the understatement of the century. North Central Texas College is celebrating our 100th anniversary as the oldest continuously operating, publicly funded, two-year college in the state and we have seen a lot of changes through those years. The timeline on the next page is only a small sampling of the highlights and accomplishments of the last 100 years.
We are fortunate to have Dr. Harrison Keller, Commissioner of Higher Education, join us today for the commencement address. Dr. Keller is Commissioner of Higher Education and chief executive officer for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He is a sixth-generation Texan with more than twenty-five years of experience in state budget and policy, university administration, fundraising, and building coalitions among higher education institutions, school districts, and policymakers to expand opportunity through education.
On behalf of the entire college community, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you on this momentous occasion of your graduation. As you celebrate this significant achievement with your loved ones, know that the entire faculty and staff of North Central Texas College shares in your joy and takes pride in your accomplishments. Remember, once a Lion, always a Lion.
Sincerely,
Despite the onset of the Great Depression, Gainesville Junior College found a way to continue serving its students and the community, even those students who could not afford tuition. The graduating class in 1940 was the largest yet in the history of the college, fifty-nine.
On September 27, 1952, the vote to separate the school system from the city of Gainesville passed, but separating from the school system would take several years. Gainesville Junior College was officially renamed Gainesville College on March 19, 1954. September 14, 1959, was the first day of classes in the new Gainesville College facility located on Bonner Hill.
In 1970, Dr. Amos Eugene “A.E.” Shasteen, a Korean War veteran, replaced President John H. Parker as Interim President. Under Shasteen’s leadership, the college expanded in many ways, opening a new dormitory on campus and offering three new programs: Welding, Nursing, and Cosmetology. Dr. Alton Laird replaced Dr. A.E. Shasteen as President of the newly named Cooke County College (the “Junior” designation was dropped) in 1974.
In 1990, CCC accepted over $10,000 in grants to expand its computer networking courses to keep up with technological advancements. The college officially changed its name to North Central Texas College on June 1, 1994, reflecting its broadening service area and its positive relationship in Denton. By the end of the 20th century, the college recognized its 75th anniversary with a lively celebration that included arts and crafts, an antique car show, a petting zoo, and a fashion show.
NCTC opened the Flower Mound campus in Parker Square in January 2011. Dr. Hadlock announced his retirement in the spring of 2014, and NCTC moved into its next phase under the enthusiastic and dynamic leadership of its 11th president and 1st Chancellor, Dr. G. Brent Wallace. In 2019, the college opened its downtown Denton campus in the old Denton Record-Chronicle building on Hickory Street. Today, the college is poised for growth and innovation as it moves into its next 100 years of service to the North Texas community.
Founded in 1924 by Randolph Lee Clark, North Central Texas College began as Gainesville Junior College, an extension of the local public school system, like several other early junior colleges in Texas. The inaugural first class of 32 students paid $25 per semester at Gainesville Junior College.
In the 1940s, like many other small towns in Texas, Gainesville tried to find its way out of the Great Depression, and yet, Gainesville Junior College soldiered on and, in many ways, thrived. The college began contemplating a move to separate facilities apart from the high school.
John Henry Parker became the fifth president of Gainesville Junior College in 1962 and later the first president of the newly organized Cooke County Junior College (CCJC) District. During his tenure as president, enrollment hit 1,000 students. In 1962, CCJC became fully accredited and recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Aside from traditional academic courses, the college offered numerous vocational and technical programs in the 1980s, including Automotive, Cosmetology, Drafting, Electronic Data Processing, Farm and Ranch Management, Machine Shop, Photography, Police Science, Real Estate, Secretarial Science, and Welding.
The Corinth campus opened its doors in January 2000, providing Denton County students with an instructional and administrative facility to provide Health and Fire Science and academic transfer programming. NCTC continued to grow and expand its services, opening its Bowie campus in 2000 thanks to the community’s generous support. Dr. Eddie Hadlock assumed the role of President in March 2005. In 2009, the citizens of Graham in Young County voted to join the NCTC service area and approve a branch campus maintenance tax. Enrollment continued to grow, and from 2000 to 2010, the student headcount increased by 88%.
In order to ensure your enjoyment and safety while visiting with us, please review the following information.
For your convenience, the ceremonies will be streamed live on the commencement website at nctc.edu/graduation
PROCESSIONAL AND DIPLOMA PRESENTATIONS
At the beginning of the ceremony, candidates will process in, and be seated in order as indicated by the Marshall. During diploma presentations, candidates will cross the stage from right to left.
COMMENCEMENT AND GRADUATION
Commencement is a ceremony in which preliminary degree and certificates are recognized for their academic achievements. The commencement program reflects the name and degrees and certificates of each preliminary degree candidate as well as the honors designation based on the previous semester’s progress. Conferral of the official North Central Texas College degree and certificates occurs after commencement when final grades are posted and all degree requirements have been met. The program only lists those candidates who applied by the appropriate deadline. Therefore, this program should not be considered an official list of graduates.
GUIDELINES FOR CANDIDATES AND GUESTS
Commencement is a significant and solemn event that celebrates academic achievement. In order to ensure that the ceremony is meaningful for all in attendance, please avoid all unnecessary conversation and movement. Also, please refrain from using airhorns or other noisemakers during the calling of student names.
RECESSIONAL
At the end of the ceremony, all candidates will recess outside of the South tunnel.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR GRADUATES!
