QUARTERLY UPDATE | JANUARY 2024
NCTC FOUNDATION HONORS DONORS & SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The North Central Texas College Foundation celebrated the accomplishments of students and the donors who helped provide scholarships for those students at the annual Donor and Scholar Breakfast in November at Lions Gym on the NCTC Gainesville campus.
The theme for this year was NCTC Through the Decades, as the college prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Speakers throughout the event highlighted facts about the college’s rich history from 1924 to the present. The events allowed scholarship recipients the chance to meet and personally thank the donors and employees who gave money for scholarships through the NCTC Foundation. It also allowed the donors to get to know the students and learn more about them and their future plans. Phil Neelley, President of the NCTC Foundation, welcomed the crowd and thanked the donors for their support of the scholarship program. Neelley spoke on the founding of NCTC, initially called Gainesville Junior College, in 1924 by Randolph Lee Clark. “Since its founding, NCTC has served thousands of students by staying true to its initial vision: the belief that higher education should not be limited to a few institutions but can be community-based and accessible to all who desire it,” said Neelley. Jim Goldsworthy, NCTC Foundation Member provided an invocation before Shane Studdard, NCTC Director of Vocal Studies lead the National Anthem in observance of Veteran’s Day. Debbie Sharp, NCTC Vice Chancellor of External Affairs, announced that 6 new scholarships have been established within the past year. Don McDaniel, NCTC Foundation Board Member, introduced three scholarship recipients, Alora Ahmed, Allison Ramirez, and Angelica Gomez-Jimenez, who each spoke about how the scholarships they received have helped them in their goal of obtaining an education. The breakfast ended with NCTC Chancellor Dr. Brent Wallace thanking the donors and congratulating the scholarship recipients. He also announced that a 100th Anniversary Pictorial Book will be available in the spring. You can preorder now at nctc.edu/100.

HIGHLIGHTS OF SMALL BUSINESSES SERVED: Kayson’s Candy Company
Kayson’s Candy Company is the brainchild of Cassidy and Jason Westover. Cassidy wanted to bring a vintage candy store to downtown Gainesville and create an atmosphere that would make anyone want to stop in and take a walk down memory lane! The store is actually named after their daughter, Kayson. Cassidy had a strong vision about the items sold in the store and the look she wanted to develop. When you walk into the store it’s like stepping into a soda shop from the 1890’s. Cassidy took her time researching candies and going to candy conventions to find the right items to put in her store. She plans to expand the offering to include candy bouquets to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or any other occasion. The grand opening was held on Saturday, July 29, 2023. There were special prizes offered to the first 50 visitors, and folks started lining up 5:30 in the morning! Before the doors even opened, the line wrapped around the building! The entire community came out to support the new business. The local radio station did a live broadcast from the shop, local officials attended and took pictures, the local paper interviewed the new business owners and ran an article online and in print. The Gainesville Chamber of Commerce celebrated with a traditional ribbon cutting. “My North Central Texas SBDC advisor helped me throughout the process. We celebrated all accomplishments and worked through any challenges. together.” ~ Cassidy Westover - Owner
Congratulations to Cassidy and Jason in making their dreams of small business ownership a reality through a partnership with the SBDC. As you have any specific questions or if there's anything else you'd like to know or discuss about the NCTSBDC or small business development and how we can serve you, feel free to contact us. NCTC AWARDED $2.8 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT TO HELP HISPANIC STUDENTS WITH PATHWAYS TO COMPLETION North Central Texas College has been awarded $2.8 million over five years (fall 2023-fall 2028) to help Hispanic and low-income students complete college degrees through the Pathways to Completion program. The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Education's Title V Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (D-HSI) grant. 64 colleges and universities across the nation were selected, 15 from Texas with a total of $26 million awarded to these institutions. The Pathways to Completion program will serve students across the district and service area. The main goals of the grant are to increase NCTC’s capacity to improve academic achievement and completion for students, especially for Hispanic and underserved students; expand professional growth and development opportunities for faculty and staff with emphasis on student engagement and success strategies for Hispanic and other underserved students; and increase access to high-quality data collection and analysis for transparency, accountability, and institutional improvement. Amy Klohn, Director of Completion and Career Services will serve as the Director of this program, too. The grant award includes a budget for the employment of a Grant Manager, 3 Success Coaches, a Career Coach and 2 Instructional Designers; funding for stipends for faculty to assist with development of CTE Open-Education Resources (OER) courses; development; purchase of an interactive video-conference system for Champion Circle Training Center; technology upgrades to classrooms to improve student engagement in synchronous course delivery and video recorded class sessions; development of a data dashboard; and the design of pathways to completion guided pathway maps and brochures. “I’m very proud of the work our staff and faculty have done to serve our Hispanic community and achieve this Hispanic-Serving Institution designation. I appreciate the efforts of our entire team and look forward to what this grant can do for our students, the community and NCTC,” Dr. Brent Wallace, Chancellor, North Central Texas College.
