STATEMENT OF INTENT To develop my work I will use the folloing techniques Manually - applying manipulations to printed photos for example; scratching, cutting, folding, layering, painting, scrunching, applying mixed media e.g. paper, tape, newspaper, card, lettering. Digitally (on Photoshop/InDesign/Camera raw) - blending modes, layers, cropping, black and white, alterations to contrast, clarity, exposure, black/ white levels, highlights, shadowing, curve tools, filter gallery edits....

My chosen theme is ‘masking identity and disguise’ I have chosen this because it is interesting in the way that when someone puts on a mask they loose all identity. I intend to carry out detailed research about this topic using Pinterest but I will also look into old magazines and books that I have read. The photoshoots I intended to take are disguised and masked photos of people. These photoshoots link to my starting point because they are people in disguise and many of them are behind masks. The photographs I intend to research are ralph eugine and/or Aziz and Cucher. The reason I have chosen these photographers is because the photos relate to the theme of disguise and they are photos of people with disguised faces. I am interested in exploring the ideas of Aziz and Crucher and Ralph Eugine because I feel that there photography is related to my theme and it will help me with my studies.

WEEK 2: MY WORK Find two photographers linked to your chosen starting point.

Analyse their work using Blooms Taxonomy of Questions. (RESOURCES - BLOOMS TAXONOMY)

photographer 1: Inge Morath Framing composition

In this photograph the photographer has done well to frame the center of intrest (the masks) because your attracted to them.

Colour Light quality

Although the photo is in black and white you can still see a light source coming from behinf the photographer and i think it is most likely a window behind the photographer with sun light beaming in on the people so you can see them in the photo. I think it is coming from behind the photographer because there is light on the back wall. I think the light is quite strong as i noticed it in black and white and there is a light shadow of the people.

Texture

The masks in the photo show texture, i think they are paper bags with marker pen over them and the marker pen is giving them a rough texture. I only noticed the textures right away becuase the first thing you look at are the masks as everthing else is less eye catching.

Focus

The photographer has kept everything in a sharp focus and made it nice and clear as it works better than blurred in this photo because you need to focus on the masks.

Angle of view

The angle of the camera is pointed straight towards the main subject therefore the photographer dident want to try anything differnet he just wanted to focus on the people.

This photo is in black and white therefore it seems less clear than a colour photo would be because you cant tell what the textures are like.

Time

My opinion is that thisphoto was taken somewhere in the 1950s or a reanactment of the 1950s because of the clothes they are wearing and the the genral quality of the photo.

WEEK 2: MY WORK

Homework: Compare two photographs using one of the critical studies techniques. (RESOURCES CRITICAL STUDIES)

photographer 2: Ralph Eugene Meatyard Light quality This photo by Ralph Eugene meat-yard is showing disguise because the women on the right is wearing a mask. The space is represented as the two people being quite close to each other with their backs to the car. The part of the photo I find most interesting is the masked lady because the mask is scary and unusual and catches your eye. If I could ask the artist any question if he was here I would ask him what he was trying to achieve in his photographer and why the women is wearing a mask. This image is of Lucy belle Crater and her P.O. brother it is named after her and it was taken in the 1970s. The research I did of this photographer affects my understanding of it a lot because I now know what period it was taken in and didn’t know this before the research.

Photographer 1: Richard Burbridge

Similarities

colour light quality both masked identity sharp focus grayscale both contain one person wearing a mask serious mood hiding there faces unusuall both have backdrops eyes staring at the camera

Photographer 2: Igne Morath

Differences

ones a full face mask one isn’t man and a women black background and white backgroundcardboard mask and plastic mask lots of face covered in one not much in the other one has glasses one doesnt

Week 3:

Homework: Photoshoot based on one of your chosen photographers.

PHOTOSHOOT NOTES MY CHOSEN THEME IS: Starting point 7 Masking identity and disguise

MY PHOTOSHOOT IDEAS ARE: I want to photograph my brother or myself I am interested in showing masking and disguise by wearing a mask. I want to explore how to show good lighting I want to discover how to take good photos of masks. I will be using my mobile phone camera To practise I will look at some photo shoot set ups using You Tube tutorials. My light source will be a torch light The position of the camera in relation to what is being photographed will be front facing My photoshoot will be indoors and taken during the day This set up links to my theme because it is a masked figure

Photo shoot evaluation What was successful? What didn’t work and why? What needs to be changed for the re-shoot?

Week 3: Create your own versions of the photographers work (photoshoot)

Week 3:

Homework: Photoshoot based on one of your chosen photographers.

This photoshoot shows desguise because the photos distort the features of the face and cover up the face using coloured-in shapes with a pencil tool. As well as covering up the face with a mask i have also covered it up digitally with pink shapes using the opacity tool and previous photos of the same mask shown in examples two and three. In task 4 i desguised the mask photos by building a puzzle and and placeing the same photo in numerous times. In task two we did a mirror image creates a photo using two photos this shows desguise well.

I took multiple photos of Ethan and cut them up and them stuck them down. it shows

disguise because there is a tigers roaring mouth covering up the lower half of his face. It is two diffrent photos stuk together to create one face, this looks goood because it isnt perfectly lined up. The two photos of him are not lined up as you can see the left eye is positioned next to his nose which was intended to give it a messy feel.

Week 4:

Homework: Edit the photographs using at least two digital and two manual techniques.

Week 4: Take your own photographs based on your chosen starting point.

Explore different techniques (digital and manual) that can be applied to your photographs that helps show the starting point.

Week 5: Create two possible ideas based on your own photographs and techniques.

POSSIBLE IDEA 1

My first idea for my final piece is to merge two different photos together. One photo is of my dads plain face and the other of him wearing a mask. They are ripped in half with purposful jagged edges to give it a messy feel. each part of the seprate photo is stuck to the oposite side. This is most likely to be my final piece in the exam as i think it is really effective. I may edit this for the exam and make one of the photos black and white to show more techniques i will also put it in a black frame.

POSSIBLE IDEA 2

My second idea involves arranging four of the same photographs and using manul edits. I made it as a face that is cracked open to reval his true identity of wearing a mask. I felt that this didnt show enough desiguise so i took a photo of the brick work on the side of my house and then added this to it. I managed to cut up the bricks and arrange them in diffrent patterns across the face covering the eyes and other key parts of identity. Overall this idea didnt really work for me and i dont think its as good as possible idea 1.

Create your FINAL PIECE 2hrs Exam

I am happy with the outcome of my final piece, which is shown above. I stuck with some of my intentions of cutting faces in half and sticking them together to create a whole. However i didnt create exactly what i did in possible idea 1 for example in posssible idea 1 i went for manual edits only but in the real exam i decided to make some of the photos black and white. I made a last minute chocie to do some ink drawings on top of my photograph i feel this has benefited me because it shows desguise better than my original idea.

Evaluate your work As a final outcome, based on the chosen starting point I have produced a picture showing masking and disguise i did this using many techniques that we have learned. The photo consists of four diffrent photos cut up and stuck down to make three. Some of the photos where manually edited and some digital. I chose this format because I think it relates to my chosen starting point of masking, identity and disguise. In the production of my work I used several techniques that involved ‘hands on’ work and some that were digitally-based on photoshop and bridge. The ones that where hands on work involved drawing on diffrent features of the mask to the plain face. However the digitaly based editing was done on adobe cc bridge which is a computer app that allows you to digitaly edit your photos. I used this app to make two of my four photos black and white. I used diffrent contrasts and had a mess around with differnt filters to finf the perfect black and white. Some ideas were dropped throughout the course because I felt they weren’t working. For example the one above where i stuck diffrent peices of brick work to my dads face However, much of my photoshoots, developments and reshoots were extremeley successful and helped to lead me to my final outcome. The two key photgraphy styles I carried forward were editing in black and white and also doing some nice manual edits involving cutting and sticking and using a black pen. My work successfully explores the topic by showing disguise in a diffrent way to normal because it isn’t just a photo of a mask its four diffrent photos combined to create a artistic peice. To take the work further I could have added something a tad more challenging like stiching onto the face. I saw some other work with stiching on it and i though it worked really well. I could also have used some diffrent textures on the photo for example sand paper or other rough materrials to stick onto and cover up the face. I believe I have created many links to the work of studied artists and photographers I interepreted work by Richard Burbridge who is a fashion photographer for many magazines and does lots of masking and disquise photos. I think I took risks with my photoshoots and ideas by adding on pen the reason behind this is that the pen wasn’t traced it was just added on and if it went wrong i wouldent of been able to recover it. After completing my work and final piece, I understand more about my chosen topic and further sub-themes which I didn’t know before. For example, you can create a simple peice that can turn out looking really good. I also learnt a whole lot more about disguise photography and how to take good disguise photos. I learnt how to work my way around in-design alot better and learnt a few more editing techniques on bridge. I learnt many new photographers like Ralph Eugine Meatyard and Igne Morath i can even use these photographs on my next bit of work in photography.
