Where Trails End the journey begins

The devotion to the Virgin Mary, Undoer of Knots, emerged in 17th-century Germany after a miracle that healed a marriage in crisis. The story took place in 1615 when a priest prayed over the knotted ribbon that the spouses had used on their wedding day as a symbol of the indissoluble union of the sacrament of marriage. For 40 days, they kept those knots until the last day when, in a fervent prayer to Mary, the priest said: “Immaculate Mary, I invoke you and lift up to you the ribbon of this marriage, untie the knots and extend it.”

Miraculously, at that moment, the knots of the ribbon untied, and it regained its original white color. From that moment on, the couple reconciled and lived a happy marriage.

The grandson of this couple, who became a Jesuit priest, dedicated a chapel in the Church of St. Peter Am Perlach in Augsburg, Germany, and commissioned an altarpiece to spread devotion to Maria Desatadora de Nudos. The painting, done by Johann Melchior Schmittne, offers comfort and hope to those who have lost loved ones, focusing on eternal life and the path to peace and transcendence. The project is characterized by its low environmental impact and simple design, harmoniously integrated with nature. The place seeks to be a warm and welcoming space to honor and remember the departed.

Furthermore, a special painting was requested for this sanctuary, symbolizing the beginning of this project: “The Painting of Maria Desatadora de Nudos.” This artwork has become a symbol of hope and was promoted by Pope Francis.
