Dawson Creek Mile Zero Cruisers Summer Cruise A Brief History.
Summer Cruise got started in 1995. Viril Anderson had the idea to get a bunch of car enthusiasts together, have a bar-b-que and go for a ride. Around 20 vehicles attended that first year. They did a drive around town, met at the Walter Wright Village for a meal and then headed home.
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR RIDE, SHINY OR TARNISHED, DENTED OR FINISHED, YOU ARE WELCOME IN THE MILE ZERO CRUISERS AND JOIN US FOR A SUMMER CRUISE. The second year was a full day event with 50 vehicles attending. For the third annual Summer Cruise, the event became a two day affair with a 50’s style sock hop on the Saturday night and then a show and shine around the Mile Zero Post on Sunday. By 1999 the event became a three day celebration of the automobile with a welcome

cruise-in and family bar-bque and street dance at the Co-op Mall. The Dawson Coop has been sponsoring the Friday night event ever since. Saturdays are now a chance to do something with the cars whether it is taking part in a rally, going to the drag races in Ft St John, or participating in car games. (Car games can include driving through a course of traffic cones while blindfolded and being guided by your seeing eye passenger) The big event is still the show and shine on Sunday and it is still held on Main street, spreading out from the Mile Zero Post. While originally it took up the first block west of the Mile Zero Post, the show has now grown to fill 9 city blocks with vehicles arriving from all over northern BC and AB as well as occasionally guests from much further away. The original 20 vehicles have grown more than ten times and at the 2014 show 435 vehicles were on display.
From its inception, the show has been inclusive of all types of motorized vehicles. Cars of every description and year from 1914 to current model years, trucks of every year and size from the smallest compacts to monster trucks to farm trucks to highway haulers, motorcycles with two wheels, three wheels and even one single wheel contraption. Motorized barstools, go carts, tractors, boats and a land speed jet car have all been on display at Summer Cruise. As well as the more traditional looking vehicles we have also had some interesting art cars in attendance such as the flower covered VW Beetle and the astro-turf covered Mercury Cougar. You can never be sure what you might find at the Summer Cruise Show and Shine but you can be assured of finding something interesting to look at, a bit of history, many non-profit societies with displays and booths, and lots of people to visit with.

1957 Chevy BelAir 2-Door Hard-Top
Owned by Paul Geist, Dawson Creek BC Paul purchased this 1957 2-door hard top from Ed Savard in October 1983. Ed had brought it to Dawson Creek in 1973 along with a collection of cars that he owned with Frank Ripley. The cars came from the lower mainland. At this time, Paul was working as an auto body technician for Aspol’s Body Shop. Over the next year he did a complete restoration on this car from the frame up. The mechanical was done by Paul’s brother, Walter Geist. The restoration was completed in 1984. Over the next two years Paul drove and enjoyed his car. He entered it in the local car show in 1985 and placed first. In 1986, with a growing family and plans to build a house Paul sold his car to Sharon Dolan from Rolla. Shortly after, Sharon moved to Gabriola Island and placed the car in a reefer van for storage. Sharon never drove the car again and it remained in storage for many years. Paul kept in contact with Sharon over the years and in 2005 she agreed to sell the car back to him. After 19 years, Paul was picking up his pride and joy – only to start from the beginning again. With the help of Pace Autobody Ltd. Paul did a complete restoration on this car for a second time. The mechanical was done by Keith Trail. The second restoration was completed in 2007.
e
In recent years, Paul and Faye have enjoyed being a part of the local car club, The Mile 0 Cruisers. They have met many great people who share the same appreciation for classic cars. Paul and his family plan to enjoy his 1957 Chevy for years to come.

1957 Chevy BelAir
2-Door Hard-Top
Owned by Blain and Donna Massee, Dawson Creek BC In 1971 Frank Ripley purchased this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air two door hardtop from the original owner for the total sum of $165.00. The car had been purchased new from Dueck GM in Burnaby, BC. It as an original, complete car with a six cyl 235 cu inch engine and three speed standard transmission with a column shift. Frank eventually gave the car to his wife because he also owned 26 other 1955-6-7 vehicles. They enjoyed the car as a driver and eventually had the motor rebuilt. In 1973 they moved to Dawson Creek and brought all their vehicles with them. In 1979 Frank sold his collection because he was opening a shoe repair shop. The 1957 was sold to Kevin Heath who eventually sold it to Darryl Ireland in 1980. Kevin was selling his pride and joy ‘57 to buy a wedding ring for his future bride. Shortly after Darryl purchased the car he had one of our town’s local hot rodders, well known body man Fred Richter, redo the body and paint on the car. We, (Donna and Blain) had been looking for a 1957 Chev BelAir for some time and low and behold we found one not two miles from our backyard, the car had been there for years. We bought her from Darryl Ireland in October of 2009, brought her home and had her running that evening. She could have been a daily driver but we decided to do a frame off restoration. Over the next three years and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears and a lot of that stuff we call cash, we got the 57 on the road in the summer of 2012 in the shape she’s in today. These two cars haven’t been together since the 70s so it is kind of cool, after all these years, that they are still in the same town.

1965 MUSTANG FASTBACK
Carmen & Jennifer Sipe Grande Prairie, Alberta
This Mustang is a 1965 2+2 289 Ford Mustang, 4 speed. Exterior is Raven Black with a standard black interior.
CARMEN DID ALL THE MECHANICAL, BODYWORK AND PAINT ON THE MUSTANG. When Carmen was a kid, one of his older brothers had a 1965 Mustang and Carmen thought it was a pretty cool car. In 1985 he purchased a 1965 Mustang Fastback from A1 Auto Parts near Pouce Coupe. The Mustang had been abused and was more of a basket case than a show car. Restoration was on and off over the next 15 year and finally completed in 2000. Carmen did all the mechanical, bodywork and paint on the Mustang. The car then lived in Carmen and Jennifer’s garage while their son was young as there were no tether hooks or seatbelts in the backseat in which to secure a carseat.
the Mile Zero Cruisers Car Show where it was recognized as one of the top Mustangs at the show. 2014 was the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang which made the award that much more significant. A month later, with a seatbelt installed in the back seat, Carmen, Jennifer and their son Royce went on a holiday with the car, participating in the Western Canada Power Cruise. They went from Grande Prairie to Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Cranbrook and the final destination Spokane, Washington. It was a fabulous trip and for a 50 year old vehicle, the ride was surprisingly comfortable. During the trip, there were plenty of “thumbs up” and positive comments about the car. It was one of the best road trips ever and plans are to take the Mustang on more trips in the future.”
In July of 2014, Carmen took the car to

1969 SWINGER 340 Back in the early 70’s I was driving a 1968 GTS 4 speed car, cruisin the main drag of my home town of Thamesville, Ontario. These were the best times as a young man, hanging around with my friends. My first love has always been muscle cars. I sold my 1968 Dart GTS to my friend back in Ontario over 40 years ago by the name of Bobby Shaw, to this day he still has the car in his collection, I always knew the car would never be for sale. So I moved forward, 45 years passed by I found this 69 Dart Swinger 340 speed in Alberta. t It was close enough to what I used to have so I set to restoring it. After two years of hard work, months on a rotisserie, it all came together.

AFTER TWO YEARS OF HARD WORK, MONTHS ON A ROTISSERIE, IT ALL CAME TOGETHER. The Dawson Creek 2014 show was the first show for the 69 Swinger. The car to date still only has 6 miles on the new

Willy’s Coupe
Mardy & Rosanne Smook Prince George
The car is a 1941 Willys Coupe that we have owned for about four years. As a young lad I loved watching the Willys of Stone Woods and Cook, Big John Mazmanian, K.S Pittman and many others raced in the gasser wars of the 1960s and 70s and dreamed of some day owning one myself.
I FOUND LATER IN LIFE FINDING AN OLD WILLYS GASSER THAT WAS RACED IN THE 60S AND 70S WOULD BE NO EASY TASK AS 1941 STEEL WILLYS ARE RARE AND EXPENSIVE After looking for about 35 years I found the one we own now. It was owned by John Satterwhite (Satterwhite rose to fame in the skeet shooting world during the 1970s after competing in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, where he won a bronze medal and served as team captain. He also won numerous gold medals for skeet shooting while representing the U.S. in other international competitions, including the Pan American Games). In 1968 John found the 1941 Willys Coupe in a wrecking yard in Washington State, it was an all steel candy apple red ex race car (assumed to be called the smoking gun) that raced up and down the west coast from 1962 to 1968. In 1971 John had a friend (Art Morrison of Art Morrison Enterprises) replace the straight axle with a Mustang two front suspension as John said the car was impossible to steer at 140 MPH with the straight axle (this is one of the first Mustang front suspensions Art installed). Art also built the tech and fuel gauge mounts, roll bar and replaced the rear end with a nine inch ford and ladder bars. The Willys gray interior, yellow paint and Fiberglas tilt front end were added 1971 (which remains on the car today). Engine; small block chev capable of producing 850 horse power (Rebuilt by Custom Auto Rebuilding of Prince George BC) Dart block, Callies crank, Eagle H beam rods, Diamond blower pistons, AFR heads, Comp full roller valve train, BDS 871 blower, Two Holley 750 double pumper carbs, MSD ignition, Snow Performance water methanol

injection system. Transmission; turbo 400 (Rebuilt by Park Hill Transmission of Prince George BC) SFI bellhousing, reverse manual valve body, red eagle clutches, 3500 stall converter, B&M deep sump oil pan are some of the many performance upgrades. The 4500 stall converter and trans brake were removed because of overheating issues due to street use. Differential; nine inch ford with a spool, strange axles and ladder bars. Summer Cruise Souvenir T-shirts For years Summer Cruise has been known for its high quality T-shirts and interesting art work. Theresa, at the Promo Shoppe in Dawson Creek has always given great advice and great prices. The last few years the club has stepped it up with the shirts and has had them designed by world famous cartoonist, George Trosley. With Theresa’s help, we have been able to transfer George’s art work to the shirts with great color and detail.
are brothers Krass and Bernie who have ripped apart and built tons of wild rods over the 20 years they appeared in magazines. To have such a famous artist so well loved by hot rodders everywhere makes the Summer Cruise T-shirts true collectors items. Each year the Mile Zero Cruisers meet in December and vote on their choice for the cars to feature on the next year’s T-shirt. The club picks from the previous year’s winners and it is always fun to watch a driver show up at the cruise and discover that their vehicle is on the T-shirt.

So a little info on this ride. I picked it up out of Victoria in 2012; had an incident in Vancouver on the way home where it got t-boned by someone making a left hand turn. (1hr after off of ferry) Limped it home but wasn’t sure if it was going to be fixable.
ICBC WANT TO WRITE IF OFF AND OFFERED ME A SETTLEMENT I said no way and fought with them for a few months and was able to keep it without having to get inspections. Scott at RSS body shop across from the rodeo grounds did the body work for me and the crew at RSS got a good paint match for me. The misfortune didn’t stop there, the tranny (3rd gear) cratered on me. Too much horsepower for the stock transmission. I’m getting that straightened out here once the snow melts and then I can get it out and hopefully enjoy it again.

1969 FORD MUSTANG MACH 1
I purchased the car for $2000 in September 1989 from a little old lady who could no longer push the button on the door handle to open the door. Perfect scenario, right? I drove the car home knowing that it needed restoration including rear quarter panels. Months later, when I finally started to work on the car,
I REALIZED THAT I WAS LUCKY MY family and i didn’t fall THROUGH THE FLOOR DURING THAT 150 KM RIDE HOME. Over the course of the next 23 years I never quit working on the car. Sometimes there was no time, sometimes there was no place, sometimes there was no knowledge and sometimes there was no money to advance the project. With the help and blessings from family and friends, I never lost sight of my goal. I replaced virtually every piece of sheet metal
Eddie & Suzanne Sandboe Sexsmith, Alberta
except for the hood and the roof. Every nut and bolt was cleaned, treated and or replaced in the restoration process. I have added original factory dash air conditioning vents, Vintage Air, Magnaflow 2 ½” stainless exhaust, Randall’s rack and pinion, Custom Audio Sound, rear mounted antenna, 15” Magnum 500 wheels, rear window louvers and rear deck spoiler. After overhauling the 351 Windsor, factory 4 barrel engine, the FMX automatic and the rear diff, I had the body work completed and painted in the factory original Silver Jade acrylic enamel. The Marti Report indicates the Mach 1 was ordered as a Dealer Demo in October of 1968 by Camrose Auto
Service Ltd. in Camrose, AB., built November 7th, 1968 and was sold March 18th , 1969. The car placed First in “Conservative Hardtop ’66-‘69” at the 2014 Calgary World of Wheels and Top 10 at the 2014 Mile Zero Cruisers Summer Cruise in Dawson Creek. If you love your project, never, never give up.

1960 Cadillac Fleetwood
Jack McPherson Dawson Creek, BC
In 1984 I bought this 1960 Cadillac Fleetwood 4 door hardtop in Calgary from the original owner’s son, Richard Foster, as the owner had passed away. This car is numbers matching and the interior is original. I did the major work to the 390ci V8 engine (375 HP) and replaced the brakes and complete exhaust system when I first brought it home to Beaverlodge. As I moved the Caddy came with me and was kept undercover until 2011 when I decided it needed some love and TLC on the outside. The car was stripped down, given a few exterior modifications and repainted.
BECAUSE OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND THE SHORTAGE OF STEEL ALL THE TRIM ON THIS CAR IS STAINLESS STEEL The bumpers are steel and were sent out and re-chromed in Edmonton at Edmonton Electro Plating. The front bumper weighs more than 200lbs by itself. This Cadillac has power windows and a working AM radio with a power antenna. I drove it a few times and it was even used for last years Graduation Red Carpet. I have enjoyed putting this classy old car in the car show and love the reactions on just how spacious and luxurious these cars really are. The next project is a complete interior replacement. I wish they would bring back the old Drive-In as this car could take the whole family and then some!

1946 GMC TRUCK
Vicki & Harold Wheeler Quesnel, BC
Vicki’s (no not really), Harold’s 1946 GMC Truck. The dream started as Vicki’s 1946 Chev pick-up truck, meant to be a daily driver, but quickly changed to Harold’s 1946 GMC show truck.
IT WAS PURCHASED IN PRINCE GEORGE WHERE A RENO HAD BEEN STARTED BUT THEN ABANDONED AS TOO MUCH TO DEAL WITH It took seven years to build, starting with a chop of the roof, shaved door handles and custom box and hood. It has a Chevy 350 engine and turbo 400 transmission with a Ford 9” rearend. This one was built for cruising as the ‘31 Chev is geared for racing but that didn’t stop a few runs down the track at Ashcroft last year. Vicki got to choose the paint color and we both chose the custom interior, done by Gord Redman of Quesnel.

1927 FORD MODEL T Four years ago I was on my computer one night and went on a site P.O.F. (Plenty of Fords, LOL). I was chatting with a lady in Alberta and she went on to tell me of her dads old truck. I got interested in this truck and she offered to show it to me.
WE DROVE TO EAGLESHAM, AB TO THE HOMESTEAD AND IN AN OLD SHED SAT A MODEL “T” TRUCK THAT WAS COVERED IN DUST AND THE MICE HAD MOVED IN We drove to Eaglesham, AB to the homestead and in an old shed sat a Model “T” truck that was covered in dust and the mice had moved in! Next I went and visited the owner in the Fairview Care Home. A very nice man by the name of Gordon Donaldson. Gordon told me how he started gathering parts around Alberta 18 years prior, and it all started with one-third of a body! For 18 years he gathered old parts of Model “T”s and finally put together a

truck that ran! Gordon was very proud of his truck and showed in local Alberta parades and also used it for weddings to drive Brides and Grooms around. Once Gordon got to know me and confirmed that I would not just re-sell his truck, he agreed to sell it to me. I was very excited to continue his project and enjoy the truck! Unfortunately, only two weeks after I bought the Model “T” truck from Gordon, he passed in his sleep. I was thankful for his knowledge sharing of his work on the “T”. Since then, I have rebuilt the motor, transmission, water pump and put a rebuilt Holley carb, and just got a good radiator from a guy in southern BC. I still have some body work to do and

1961 CHEVROLET APACHE 10 SHORTBOX
I bought the truck in 2006 as a fixer upper, and the journey began with the body restoration that was done at Al Parker Auto Body in Chilliwack, BC.
THE BODY AND PAINT PROCESS TOOK A LITTLE MORE THAN 6 MONTHS, AND WE BROUGHT IT BACK FRESHLY PAINTED IN ONE OF OUR ADVANTAGE MOVING VANS. Upon return, we began to realize how many pieces were actually missing to put the rest of the truck back together. After thousands of dollars and about a year and many calls to Scott’s Super Trucks in Penhold, Alberta, the truck was ready for the power train. The original plan was to have my 327 small block that was taken out of our race car be the power plant of choice, but SOMEONE out there decided that they needed the motor more than I did. The shop where we were working on the truck was broken into by a pack of 4 wheeler driving thieves, and the only thing
they took in the back of their quad trailer was my 327 and the 1/2 inch wrench that took it off the motor stand. That was a big setback, and unfortunately that also froze my budget for this project. The only funny part would be if the thieves actually fired up the motor without checking the bottom end, as we had pulled off the mains and rods to check the bearings. We didn’t re-torque them so if the buggers dropped this little power plant into their vehicle, guaranteed the bottom blew apart!! That is the only way you see past this type of incident in a vehicle restoration, and it still puts a smile on my face thinking about it. A few months later, I was offered up the 396 that is now in the truck as the power- plant. We went through it to make sure things were still tight, and it looked to be ready for installation. The first year that I put the truck into the Sunday Show and Shine / Summer Cruise was 2011, and we were putting some of the finishing touches on the truck as late as the morning of
