DC SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2012 Trim: 7.75x10.25 Bleed: None
WELCOME! KEEPING IT REEL… Thank you for supporting the 2012 DC Shorts Film Festival. In our ninth incredible year, we are pleased to showcase 140 films and six screenplays from 27 different countries. The amazing growth and success of DC Shorts has earned us a reputation as “one of the most influential film festivals” from Moviemaker Magazine, and has made us a repeated top pick by local critics and in readers’ polls. DC Shorts has always been proud to feature truly independent films and filmmakers. In this age of digital video, home computers – even HD cameras on cell phones – the ability to create films has become accessible to everyone. Our festival proves that great film is no longer just from Hollywood, but from everyone and everywhere.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS 3
NEW! Make sure to get tickets for a screening with a CHEF/FILM PAIRING! Selected food-themed films are paired with local chefs who will present the audience with a complimentary dish inspired by the movie. INFO ON PAGE 5 AND THROUGHOUT THIS BOOK IN THE ORANGE BLOCKS.
3
NEW TIME! The DC SHORTS SCREENPLAY COMPETITION is an incredible evening of live script readings and an audience vote to determine the winner of a $2,000 grand prize! This year, finalists are from as close as downtown — and as far away as the United Kingdom and Australia. INFO ON PAGE 17.
3
FREE! Our complimentary FAMILY SHOWCASES (for kids 8+) are now joined by our new TEEN SHOWCASES (for teens 12+). Screenings at the brand-new Angelika Film Center are scheduled so you can watch a showcase with your younger children after dropping the older ones off in another auditorium. INFO ON PAGES 24-25.
3
NEW! Seeing every film at the theater is not always possible — we are showing a staggering 27 hours of film! THE DC SHORTS ONLINE FILM FESTIVAL is a way to watch many of the films in the comfort of your home — or on the run using a smartphone or tablet. This pass may only be purchased online and in conjunction with regular theater tickets. INFO ON PAGE 5.
This year, we are also excited to partner with The Coterie and Whole Foods Market P Street to show an incredible collection of food-themed films from around the globe. Selected films have also been paired with local chefs who have prepared small plates for audience members. Look through the catalog for these special screenings.
3
So butter up your popcorn, get nice and comfy — and enjoy the movies! And don’t rush out of the theater after the screening – many showcases feature a Q&A session with the filmmakers who are visiting the District from as far away as Australia. Meet them and show your appreciation.
