Throughout the month of October preschoolers in JBAB Child Development Center (CDC) I studied pumpkins. To give the kids a hands-on approach to learning, they visited the pumpkin patch at Cox Farm on Oct. 29. The outing, which included 96 kids and 40 chaperones, was the first off-base field trip for a JBAB CDC in more than a decade.

Kendall Peters, lead the annual MWR Halloween parade from Giesboro Park to JBAB Youth Center Oct. 30. The chilly temps meant lots of jackets over costumes, except for kids dressed as Elsa, since the cold never bothered them anyway.

JBAB, NSA Annapolis earn NDW Installation Excellence Award By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Pedro A. Rodriguez Naval District Washington Public Affairs
Commander, Navy Region Naval District Washington (NDW) Rear Adm. Yancy Lindsey recognized Naval Support Activity (NSA) Annapolis and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) as the NDW nominees for the Installation Excellence Award, Oct.20. The award recognizes top Navy shore commands for their installation management, program excellence and community outreach. NSA Annapolis and JBAB will continue on to compete at the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) level, facing other re-
gions worldwide for the Navy-wide award. Winners at the CNIC level will compete with military installations from other services for the 2016 Commander in Chief Awards. The annual Installation Excellence Award recognizes the top three large and small installations world-wide and rewards installation performance consistent with Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) strategic criteria for the DOD-wide Commander in Chief Installation Excellence Awards. This is not JBAB’s first time to be nominated by NDW to the large installation category award. The installation was also nominated in 2011. “I am very proud of our installation team here at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling,” said JBAB Commanding Officer Navy Capt. Frank Mays. “All
five branches of the military are well represented here on JBAB and our selection is a testament to the hard work our folks are doing every day. It’s an honor for us to be able to represent the region in the CNIC-wide competition.” For NSA Annapolis, this is their second year in a row to represent the region in the competition. Last year, the installation received third place in the small installation category. NSA Annapolis Commanding Officer Navy Capt. Logan Jones praised the consistent hard work of his staff and the constant support of their mission partners. I am extremely proud of the NSA Annapolis team and the extraordinary work performed here every day,” he said. “Our government civilians and active duty military, con-
tract personnel and mission partners such as Lincoln Military Housing, the Navy Exchange, Navy Lodge and the Defense Commissary Agency. They are all fantastic! It doesn’t really matter what color of uniform you wear or how your paycheck gets funded. At Annapolis, it’s all one big team working collaboratively to support growing midshipmen into fleet leaders.” Jones further emphasized that the recognition is a testament to the dedication of his team’s effort throughout the year. “The Installation Excellence Award program provides a terrific opportunity for leadership to deliberately reflect upon the hard work and progress made throughout the year, to highlight superstars and initiatives responsible for the progress, and to establish benchmarks [and] navi-
gational aids for the year to come,” he said. “And it is always motivating when the team’s exceptional efforts are recognized and appreciated by those outside the command!” NDW installations, including Naval Support Activities Washington, Annapolis, South Potomac, Patuxent River, and JBAB, were judged on port and air operations; public safety; emergency management; security; force protection; facility improvements and support; energy and environment stewardship; community relations; and Fleet and Family Readiness. JBAB and NSA Annapolis were selected as the regional representatives for superior performance in all the criteria pre-established in the Commander in Chief Installation Excellence Award.

Commandant’s Corner
Rear Adm. Yancy B. Lindsey Commandant, Naval District Washington Autumn has definitely arrived here in the National Capital Region with all its beauty, color and cool breezes. Transition to a new season signals a transition in our lifestyles and activities ... both at work and at home. Before you venture into winter duties/responsibilities, driving, sports activities, household chores, etc., please take a minute to ensure your equipment is in good operating condition and you are physically and mentally prepared. Think through the “what ifs”, identify and evaluate the risks, and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety and that of your shipmates, friends and family. Congratulations to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (large) and Naval Support Activity Annapolis (small) for earning the 2016 NDW Installation Excellence Award in their category. They will represent us well at the Navy Installations Command level. Thank you for your efforts during Energy Action Month. However, we must continue to be aware of our energy usage and constantly look for opportunities to reduce our energy footprint. On Oct. 15, we announced an Energy Biggest Loser competition that will run
through Nov. 30. The competition will reward the top three NDW installations who do the best job of conserving energy during the month of November as compared to November 2014. Winning installations will be awarded with funding for base energy improvement projects. November is Warrior Care Month where we publicly recognize our wounded warrior heroes. Warrior Care Month was established to increase awareness of programs and resources available to wounded, ill and injured service members, their families, and those who care for them. In addition to raising awareness, there are several events scheduled within the Region to observe Warrior Care Month and highlight the extraordinary resilience of our recovering service members. Take some time this month to learn more about wounded warrior programs and thank our wounded warriors and their families for their service and sacrifice. For more information on the Navy Wounded Warrior — Safe Harbor program and events this month visit Safeharbor.navylive. dodlive.mil. A lot of you will be traveling during the holiday season to spend time with family and friends. We all certainly have much to be grateful for during this Thanksgiving. I’m grateful for your dedication and the outstanding work you do each and every day to support our fleet, fighters, families, and nation. From my family to yours, please enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. If you are able to travel during the holiday weekend, please allow plenty of time for the journey so you are able to return home safe and rested. You are our Navy’s most valuable resource. Happy Thanksgiving.

Air Force Honor Guard creates “Haunted Trail” for trick-or-treaters By Tamara Ward Joint Base Journal Staff Photojournalist
The Air Force Honor Guard routinely hosts a Halloween party for family members at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB). “There’s not a lot of neighborhoods around here that you would go trick-or-treating,” said Air Force Maj. Ryan Vanveelen, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard operations officer. “What we wanted to do is give all the kids and the families a very safe place to trick-or-treat.” “Every year we are trying to make it [Halloween celebration] a little bit bigger,” said Vanveelen, a self-professed “huge Halloween guy” who owns many of the props used for the celebration. This year the Honor Guard went all out. Each element decorated a distinct area of the “H” (center of the Honor Guard campus) in hopes of winning a day pass for their team from their commander, Air Force Lt. Col. Peter Tritsch. There was an array of activities for kids and adults that are kids at heart. The kid-centric activities started at the Operations and Commander’s Support Staff (CSS) building, with in-office trick-or-treating and a ride on a pirate ship complete with your very own pirate (Vanveelen in full costume and guy-liner — Arghh!). For those faint-at-heart kids, a pumpkin patch with bales of hay offered a calm environment and a take-home pumpkin. Afterwards, kids could go to Ceremonial Hall where the Drill Team hosted games, food, and offered photo booth pictures while blockbusters like Hotel Transylvania played on the big screen. Babysitting was provided so parents could take part in the haunted trails around the Honor Guard campus. With a flow to their madness, Operations and CCS offered a hospital where things went terribly wrong with body parts, blood strewn walls and spinning heads abound. The Pallbearers unit fashioned a grave yard complete with a hearse and the dead coming out of the ground. The Firing Party created a Zombie Apocalypse where there was a mass virus, a quarantine area and ultimately dead people coming back to life. Tech. Sgt. Dwight Hines dressed as a zombie high school jock complete with letterman’s jacket. Hines was excited about the preparation for the day’s event. “Most of the stuff we actually got dumpster-diving,” said Hines. For him it’s a family

A zombie appears to climb out of a graveyard in the decorations created by the Air Force Honor Guard Pallbearers. The Air Force Honor Guard hosted a Halloween “Haunted Trails” for kids and adults on Oct. 30 at JBAB. affair, “I’m going to dress one of my kids up and have them jump out at people.” Last, but not least, the Colors Flight offered a human maze with hanging bodies, blood and gore galore, and blinding strobe lights to hasten your completion. Lt. Colonel Tritsch has yet to render a decision on which element will receive the day pass. One thing is for sure, Vanveelen and his comrades are already planning for next year.

Hiring fair and employment workshop coming to JBAB By Tamara Ward Joint Base Journal Staff Photojournalist
Transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses will soon have employment help onsite at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB). The Hiring Our Heroes career fair, an initiative which provides valuable assistance in finding meaningful employment for the transitioning military community, will be coming to the Bolling Club on Thursday Nov. 12, free of charge. From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., the hiring event will offer an employment workshop with classroom session to help participants brush up on interview skills and learn networking techniques. There will also be one-on-one mentoring sessions that focus on résumé building, résumé writing and mock interviews for event participants. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a hiring fair with 75 employers to include private industry and federal agencies. Such as the U.S. Customs Border Protection and the Department of Agriculture. Hiring Our Heroes is an U.S.
Chamber of Commerce Foundation program launched back in March 2011 to bring companies who were searching for skilled workers, and veterans and military spouses that are leaving and the military and searching for work every day, according to Kim Morton, senior manager of communications, Hiring Our Heroes. “We found that it seemed to be a disconnect between the two groups. They were searching for each other, but didn’t have a forum to meet and exchange the skills that were needed,” she said. According to Morton, the benefits for hiring someone from the military are numerous. “The employers that are coming to our fair know what they are getting,” says Morton. “The military is one of the best training programs in the world. When you see veteran or military spouse on the résumé you know what you are getting … a person that has the training, has the discipline, has the dedication to get the job done.” While the veteran unemployment rate as a whole is declining and consistently lower than
the civilian average, in 2014 roughly 573,000 veterans were looking for work, according to the Bureau of Labor of Statistics. “Post 9/11 veterans still have a higher unemployment rate than their civilian counterparts,” says Morton. “That’s for a lot of reasons. It could be that civilian employers get hung up on [applicants] having a college degree, while service members may have four to six years of valuable experience, they may not have that degree piece yet. It makes it harder for them to find work in the civilian sector.” Other factors include that some veterans may not have the necessary interview skills because they joined the Armed Forces immediately after high school and have never interviewed for a job or created a résumé. According to Morton, in 2014, 53 percent of newly transitioning veterans experienced 15 months of unemployment after their separation from the military. The Hiring Our Heroes events are strategically hosted on military installations to help transitioning service members connect with employers well ahead of their separation date.
Since its inception, Hiring Our Heroes, has hosted 950 hiring events nationwide which have helped more than 1,500 companies to hire nearly 28,000 veterans and military spouses. Local partners for the half-day event at JBAB include the Military Family Support Center and several federal and
non-profit groups. To attend the workshop and/or the hiring fair, register at hiringourheroes. org. Walk-in participants are welcome, but pre-registration is strongly encouraged. “Come dressed for the job that you want,” says Morton. She also recommends bringing plenty of résumés and contact cards.
If you are not able to make it to the fair, the Hiring Our Heroes website has a host of digital resources to include résumé builders, a job search portal, a 24/7 virtual career fair platform, and a virtual mentorship program that connects veterans and spouses with experienced mentors.
