It was during his service w it h t he reg iment that he volunteered to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Editor’s note: At press time, the Pentagram learned that Mr. Curtis passed away in his home in Philadelphia Feb. 16. Our sympathies are with his family and friends. Col. Johnny Davis, commander, 3d U.S. Infantry regiment (The Old Guard), speaks with John Francis Curtis Jr., 77, after awarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Guard Identification Badge for his year of honorable service from August 1958 to August 1959 as a tomb sentinel. Davis presented the badge and a certificate during a ceremony in Curtis’ Philadelphia home, Feb. 11.

The Fort Myer men’s and women’s basketball teams withstood the best from the country’s military base basketball teams to defend their Capital Classic titles. This recent Washington’s Birthday weekend tournament based at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall’s Fort Myer Fitness Center, Cpl. Terry L. Smith Gymnasium and the Fort McNair Fitness Center saw the Myer men outlast Fort Bragg, 95-92. The Myer women claimed their second-straight title with a 77-71 victory against Fort Knox on Feb. 16. With JBM-HH Commander Col. Mike Henderson and Command Sgt. Maj. Randall E. Woods sitting at center court, both Fort Myer teams fell behind in their respective championship game only to rally

O n Feb. 22 at T USA B’s 93rd Anniversary Concert, Holtan will be welcomed as the new leader and conductor of The U.S. Army Band. Now into his second full month as the commander inside Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall’s Brucker Hall, he downplays the Army leadership trifecta held by nobody except himself. “I don’t make a big deal out of it,” Holtan said of his unique leadership assignments. “Circumstance afforded me the opportunity to serve in all three of these great organizations. And I think I am today who I am based on the experiences of those things that I’ve done. It is unusual in the Army to be in continual command as long as I have been since June of 2005…I’m pleased to have had the opportunity to work with all three groups, but I still put my pants on the same [way] in the morning.”

STAFF SGT. LUISITO BROOKS

Above average in height at just over sixfeet, two-inches tall, the former basketball player holds no special allegiance to a professional or a college basketball team, yet he just “loves a good game.” Holtan would much rather listen to National Public Radio than execute a musical play list. When he does listen to music, it is for work – to listen, research and prepare elements of his band for the high level of excellence expected by TUSAB’s followers. The native of Bismarck, N.D., is not a stranger to the 11 concert and ceremonial elements of the band. For 22 months during the 1990s, he simultaneously directed both the Army Chorale, the predecessor to today’s “Downrange,” and the ceremonial band. In his last year, he was in charge of The Army Chorus. During his initial weeks back at Brucker,
