COMREL meets at UMW Dahlgren Campus By Zack Shelby NSASP Staff Reporter The Naval Support Activity South Potomac Community Relations (COMREL) Council met Oct. 23 at the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren Campus, where military and community leaders gave updates on the King George Joint Land Use Study, Dominion Power Transmission Line to Dahlgren and the Rappahannock Community College Program. Rep. Rob Wittman, Virginia 1st District, briefed the COMREL on the prospects for another round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) and other budgetary issues that affect the Department of Defense. Capt. Mary Feinberg,

NSASP commanding officer, led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance after the presentation of colors by the King George High School Navy Junior ROTC Color Guard. The host for the gathering was Joe Grzeika, chairman, King George County Board of Supervisors. He said that the whole community is part of a bigger region and that they all work together to support Naval Support Facility Dahlgren. “This base is important to all of us,” Grzeika said. “Thank you all for coming. We have a great program today.” Feinberg, who is also the South Potomac Council Executive Committee co-chair, said she is enjoying the opportunity to maintain and grow the relationship between NSFs Dahlgren and Indian Head

with the surrounding community. She provided updates on recent and upcoming events at Dahlgren and Indian Head, including the celebration of the Navy’s 239th birthday and the Navy Ball at the Hospitality House in Fredericksburg in October. “JWAC (Joint Warfare Analysis Center) planned that event,” Feinberg said. “They did a phenomenal job.” She said the 240th Navy Ball will be planned by NSASP and would take place in October 2015. “In the past few months on base (Dahlgren), we’ve had a couple of high-profile visitors to include the CNO (chief of naval operations) who came Sept. 4,” Feinberg said. “He was kind enough to have an all-hands call for all of the participants. It was a great op-

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus is slated to visit Dec. 16.

Feinberg also shared that October is Energy Action Month, formerly known as Energy Awareness Month. “The Secretary of the Navy set a goal to have energy use reduced by 50 percent by 2020,” she said.
