Fort Detrick kicked off the holiday season with its annual community tree lighting ceremony Dec. 6 at the Community Activities Center. U.S. Army Garrison Commander Col. Steven P. Middlecamp helped participating children light the Christmas tree to a round of hearty cheers. The evening continued with pictures with Santa, cookies and hot chocolate, and back-to-back holiday movies.

Fort Detrick service members and civilian workers gathered in the Community Activities Center with their families to celebrate the annual Christmas tree lighting, Dec. 6.

The event was hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison; Col. Steven Middlecamp, Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup, and Deputy Garrison Commander Gunnar G.F. Pedersen, Jr., were all present to shake hands and welcome Fort Detrick workers to the event.

Volunteers, dressed as Christmas elves, and the children of those in attendance sang at the event under the direction of Fort Detrick Chapel musician Juana Anderson. After the performance, Middlecamp supervised the official lighting of the tree by the children, which was received with a round of applause. The children also had the opportunity to take pictures with Santa, while several gift baskets were raffled off.

The evening concluded with hot chocolate and back-to-back holiday movies.

Season’s Greetings!

Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup and I would like to personally wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday. We express our deepest gratitude for everything each of you do for this Nation, and for the service members, civilians and family members of Fort Detrick, Forest Glen Annex and Glen Haven.

Your sacrifices are appreciated and never go unnoticed. Fort Detrick is a unique Army installation, supporting key national security missions while executing U.S. Army programs and services. Thanks to your efforts, commitment, and dedicated service, much was accomplished and much more can be accomplished.

As we close 2013 and prepare for 2014, we would like to highlight a few of the year’s activities and prepare for the coming year.

A new fire and emergency services building opened improving Fort Detrick’s preparedness for emergencies. By the beginning of the second quarter of the fiscal year, sequestration measures were implemented which affected how many programs were executed, hiring processes, and overall management procedures.

A number of key leadership transitions occurred this year as well. The year 2013 saw a change in leadership with the commander, and command sgt. maj. of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command and Fort Detrick; both commander and command sgt. maj, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick; and commanders of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical

Research, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, and 6th Medical Logistical Management Center changing. All leaders had to implement U.S. Government furlough and shutdown procedures which negatively affected morale and curtailed certain programs.

Looking forward to 2014, Fort Detrick will lead way for the U.S. Army with a 15-megawatt solar project, beginning in late 2014, as well as opening a new gate along Opossumtown Pike, and a new auditorium in Bldg. 1520. We will continue to make progress in implementing U.S. Army programs and services like the Army’s Ready and Resilient Program, Child, Youth and School Services, Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers, Installation Planning Board and requisite feeder boards.

We will also continue to implement Installation Management Command principles such as the standard garrison organization. For resiliency, we look forward to the return of the completed running area track around Fort Detrick. There will certainly be challenges but working together we can overcome and accomplish the mission. We are Fort Detrick. We are the Army’s Home.

Again, thank you for your valued accomplishments and service. From our family to yours, we wish you all a wonderful holiday season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command named its top Retention Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for 2013. Staff Sgt. Floretta G. Sample, a respiratory specialist (68V) at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center, was selected for this honor from among eight other retention NCOs from USAMRMC subordinate commands.

“I feel blessed to be considered for such an honor, let alone to be selected,” said Sample.

Nominees from each command submitted a packet with their updated Enlisted Record Brief; physical fitness test results; a recommendation letter from their commander, sgt. maj., or Senior Enlisted Advisor; their biography and portrait; and an essay with a response to the question, “If I was able

Sample, a 14-year Army veteran, has been at the Burn Center for four years where she has been assigned to the Clinical Operations and Education Office. For the last couple of years,

Sample has also served as the USAISR Retention NCO “assisting Soldiers and civilians to make life-changing decisions easier,” she said.

During the last two years, Sample has processed 89 reenlistment packages with 34 of those packages being processed during FY13. She said she enjoys her duties as the command retention NCO despite some of the challenges.

“Some challenges include changes in the Army’s retention policies and the constant changes in soldier’s lives that affect their decisions,” Sample said.

Sample is scheduled to transfer in 2014 to the 115th Combat Support Hospital, Fort Polk, La., where she plans on continuing to work on her short- and long-term goals. “Some of my short-term goals include earning my registered respiratory therapist certification and master’s degree in Education,” she said. “Some of my long-term goals include retiring from the Army as a 1st Sergeant and becoming a college professor.”

Author and Family Therapist Offers Advice to Fort Detrick Couples SHANNON BISHOP

Relationships are like roller coasters, they are constantly up and down. Dr. Pat Love, family and marriage therapist, came to Fort Detrick Dec. 6, and offered advice and tips to couples on how to communicate effectively and enjoy the ride.

“Happy couples have the same number of problems as unhappy, unstable couples,” Love said. “If a couple has ten problems, and they solve one of them, another one will come up.”

Love emphasized the importance of understanding that your partner is the key to working through any difficult issue. She discussed how to listen to what your partner has to say, repeat it back, and ask “is there anything else?” By doing this, the partner is given the opportunity to communicate what is bothering them, and allows the listener to fully understand why behaviors, words, etc. are upsetting the partner.

“A mark of maturity and mental health is being able to be okay with people not always agreeing with you. Can you feel the feeling [of being upset] and still do the right thing?”

Love said.

Love also shared two acronyms she uses with couples on a regular basis to help re-

solve issues and bring happiness back into the relationship. The first is HOME. H- lead with your heart.

O- go outside! Love shared that research has shown that just 20 minutes outside will cause people to act better. Sunlight alters the chemical serotonin in your brain, the chemical that causes happiness.

M- manners. Using your manners, even when you are angry or upset is important.

Love said, “Don’t let your partner decide the kind of person you are going to be.”

E- entertainment. Entertainment doesn’t have to cost anything either. Go for a walk, watch a movie, or find a free concert.

The second is PMS. No, not the emotional, hormonal syndrome that most women get once a month. PMS, according to Love, stands for Positive, Measurable, Specific. If your partner has a list of things about you that bothers them, it is important to listen to them, understand what they are saying, and then give them back a response that is positive, measurable and specific.

For example, one woman in the session discussed how it upset her and made her feel disrespected when her husband came home from work and made a mess in the house after she had spent most of the day cleaning. Rather than debating about who was right and wrong, her husband said, “I

understand that me making a mess in the house after you clean all day makes you feel disrespected.”

He went on to provide examples of what he did. Following the examples he said, “I will make sure that I clean up my soda cans when I am done drinking them so the house can stay cleaner after you work so hard to make it that way.”

By offering a positive, measurable, and specific solution, the couple felt more at ease and felt they had made progress with the issue rather than constantly feeling frustrated about the same thing each day.

One of the ways Love emphasized women can show their husbands or partners their appreciation, or their happiness was through touch. Love said there is a distinction between touching and sex.

“Men need two to three times more touching than women to feel an oxytocin bond,” Love said. “Testosterone counteracts oxytocin, estrogen enhances it.”

Love described how women are more comfortable with touching in our society than men. Women hug each other, they touch their children, they hold hands, etc.

Men are not as physical in that sense. Men generally don’t hug each other, hold hands, or show as much affection to their chil-

dren. As a result, it takes more for them to feel the oxytocin bond with someone than women do.

“When your husband or partner touches you, even if they only touch your hand, it goes a long way to have a positive reaction,” Love said. “It won’t make your partner feel very good if you cringe or pull back from them.”

Love is the author of “The Truth About Love.” In her book she walks the reader through the different stages of love, from infatuation to expanding your commitment and into creating a haven together.

“Another common misconception about love is that it is a static state: once you fall in love, you get on a high and stay there forever. This is not true. The course of true love consists of a series of highs and lows.

You can gain comfort in knowing that the peaks and valleys are inherent to love, but that they are shared by millions of people around the world. You are never alone in your relationship,” Love wrote in the introduction of her book.

Tips for Safe Holiday Decorating

It is fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls this season, be fire smart.

When working with lights, refrain from connecting more than three strands of minilight sets, and do not connect more than 50 bulbs to screw-in light sets.

While candles can help create a warm and festive mood indoors, keep in mind they start two out of every five home decoration fires each year. If you still opt to use candles, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything flammable.

Although live Christmas tree fires do not commonly occur, when they do, they are dangerous. On average one out of every 40 reported Christmas tree fires resulted in death. Also, one in every six Christmas-tree related fires was caused when a heat source was too close to the tree. To prevent this from happening at your home, keep your tree a minimum of 3 feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. And remember, get rid of your tree after Christmas when it is dry.

Three Army Medical Development personnel were recognized Dec. 6 for their service to the Army when they were presented with the order of Military Medical Merit at the Barquist Army Health Clinic. Col. Mitchell Brew, Barquist commander, presented the newly inducted members to an assembled audience, and awarded each of them a plaque and medal of the order. The three individuals recognized at the event, Don Allen, Ivan Carbonell, and Anna Walsh, have collectively contributed over 100 years of service to AMEDD. Brew said Allen has provided Fort Detrick and other installations, with industrial hygiene and environmental health expertise over the course of his 28 years with AMEDD. He has contributed to disease and illness

prevention on-post through his own work and his mentoring of AMEDD’S partners.

The 36 years of contributions made by Carbonell consist largely of assisting in the delivery of direct patient care, according to Brew. He has served as a corpsman, a respiratory therapist, a military officer, a clinician, an instructor, and as a Department of the Army civilian physician’s assistant.

Brew told the assembled personnel that Walsh has also dedicated her 36 years at AMEDD to impacting the direct patient care delivery. In addition to 20 years as a military officer serving in several command positions, including chief of managed care and chief of personnel division, she has served as the Department of the Army civilian health care administrator and DCA. Membership in the Order indicates not only a minimum 10 year service to AMEDD, but also a highly dedicated service which exhibits high moral and professional standards.

Human Resources Longstanding Managing Holiday Stress Employee Chris Houck Retires

Sitting amidst teeming piles of paperwork, Merrie (Chris) Houck sifts through 24 years of neatly organized files, memos and paperwork accumulated during her tenure at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. Houck works to transition these documents since she officially retires December 31.

A native of Brunswick, Md., Houck began her career as a clerk with the National Institutes of Health. She went on to support the U.S. Department of Energy where she worked as a personnel assistant. Houck joined USAMRMC as a personnel management specialist and worked her way up to her current position, a program advisor in human resources.

According to Houck, she provides advice and guidance to the commanding general, staff and employees on all aspects of civilian and military personnel management, to include acquisition career management.

“MRMC is the acquisition arm for Army Medicine, and it’s important our staff understand rules and regulations,” said Houck.

“When I served as a program manager for the Army Medical Department Acquisition Workforce, I made every effort to get people into training and certified… that’s not a traditional learning curve,” she continued.

Houck noted that her favorite part of the job was management and employee relations, “because it’s always different.”

“What makes me excited is that if you think you know what the day is going to bring, it’s never what you expected,” said Houck.

Houck stressed that her ability to remain flexible was key to her work at USAMRMC. “If you’re rigid you’d never survive,” she said.

Houck attributes her office’s success of handling one its greatest challenges – the administrative furlough and ensuing government shutdown – to her staff and the HR

professionals in the USAMRMC subordinate units. “I have the best staff, I’m extremely fortunate. They all stepped up to the plate.

We couldn’t have done it without them,” said Houck.

Houck’s knack for creating a hard-working, but light hearted professional environment, contributed to her team’s agility. She recalled an episode during an organization day picnic when she showed the team how to “let their hair down.”

According to Houck, USAMRMC rented a dunking booth and the former Chief of Staff, Col. Jeffrey Davies, was staged in the tank. “Now, I can’t throw a baseball to save my soul…so, I paid my money, walked up to that booth, pushed the button and dunked the chief of staff,” she said proudly.

On a more serious note, when asked how she thinks USAMRMC has changed over the years, Houck replied that she is amazed at the progress the command has made in increasing the survival rate of burn victims.

She claimed she is equally astonished at the command’s work in prosthetics.

Houck explained that her disabled grandfather had two wooden prosthetic legs and that USAMRMC’s work with artificial limbs touched her personally.

“As a young girl I remember seeing my grandfather put on his wooden legs and the feet where connected with metal screws.

He used WD-40 to loosen them up. When I see what we’re doing now in the field, well, that’s been very exciting.” exclaimed Houck.

While at Fort Detrick she fondly watched young officers come and go, some of whom she had the opportunity to watch rise through the ranks, and even retire.

In government service for nearly 40 years, according to Houck the time has arrived to also close this chapter in her life.

With an eye on the future she admits that while she doesn’t have any big plans yet, she intends to spend more time with family, exercise, and with a wink, Houck adds, “play.”

It is no coincidence that the month of December – a bustling time of holiday cheer – also marks National Depression Awareness month. While a potentially joyous time, the holiday season often brings with it, stress and depression. To manage these challenges, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past, there are a number of small steps you can take to get through the next few weeks and maybe even enjoy some of the festivities.

Over the holidays many feel obliged to partake in seasonal merriment which can mean high demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name just a few. When we are immersed in the holiday season it is hard to stop and realize the impact these tasks are having on our emotional and physical well-being.

Allowing theses stresses to affect you can ruin your holidays and threaten your health.

The key to warding off stress is being aware of how you are feeling, understanding what tasks you can realistically accomplish, planning ahead, and seeking support.

Acknowledge your feelings. If you cannot be with loved ones, realize that it is normal to feel sadness. It is OK to take time to express your feelings. You cannot force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season.

Also, reach out. If you feel lonely or secluded, seek out community or religious groups, or social events. These gatherings can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden friendships.

Another helpful tip is sticking to a budget. Before shopping for gifts and food, decide how much money you can afford to spend, and then adhere to your budget. Do not try to buy happiness with gifts. As an alternative, donate to a charity in someone’s

Remember to plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan your menus and then make your shopping list. This will help prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients. And make sure to line up help for party preparations and cleanup.

Lastly, do not abandon healthy habits.

Refrain from letting the holidays become a reason to overeat or skip your workouts.

Overindulgence only adds to stress and guilt. Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don’t overdo it on dessert or alcoholic beverages. Continue to get plenty of sleep and physical activity.

CDMRP Hosts the 1st Annual Dr. Barbara Terry-Koroma Legacy Lecture Series HEATHER MCDOWELL DUONG USAMRMC PAO

The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs hosted the first annual Dr. Barbara Terry-Koroma Legacy Lecture Dec. 4, in Building 1076 at Fort Detrick.

The lecture marked one of several tributes made throughout the year in honor of the late CDMRP Program Manager Dr. Barbara Terry-Koroma and her 15 years of service to the program.

“This lecture is important because Barbara was very committed to what she did as a program manager for several military programs over the years and also as the program manager for the Minority and Underserved Populations Program,” said CDMRP Science Officer Dr. Theresa Miller, in her opening remarks.

Terry-Koroma passed away Jan. 23, 2013. She joined the CDMRP in January 1998 where she spearheaded initiatives as the Program Manager for the Special Population Program, helping to implement new research funding Dr. Folakemi T. Odedina with the University of Florida Health Can- mechanisms that incorporated the cer Center accepted a plaque presented by the Congressionally talents and resources of minority Directed Medical Research Programs as tribute to serving as serving institutions in addressing the first featured speaker as part of the annual Dr. Barbara Terry- cancer health disparities.

she interacted with, she knew that although they might have been impacted by injuries during their service they didn’t make excuses – so also she didn’t make excuses in her work,” said Miller.

Guest speaker and Associate Director of the University of Florida Health Cancer Center Dr. Folakemi T. Odedina presented the inaugural lecture titled, “Addressing Prostate Health Disparities: The CORE Elements (Community Outreach, Research and Education).” Odedina began her presentation saying that TerryKoroma was a visionary leader.

She shared with the audience that a true leader is one who influences those around them.

“As a new investigator, the Department of Defense allowed me to be truly innovative. Barbara helped me jump start my career and make a lasting effect,” said Odedina. “We need to continue Barbara’s fight to eliminate disparities,” she concluded.

In her presentation, Odedina discussed the burden of prostate cancer in black men. She relayed the work she and others conducted to trace the roots of prostate health disparities and methods underway to address those inequities including community outreach, research and education.

Throughout her discussion, Odedina frequently referred to her “BTK Recommendations,” which she noted were salient points Terry-Koroma had emphasized in her own work which she, in turn, had adopted. These recommendations highlighted the importance of consumer advocacy; the need to address factors impacting disadvantaged populations; and mentoring the next generation of health disparities researchers.

Over her career at CDMRP, Terry-Koroma managed several research programs totaling more than $1 billion in research funding. Her efforts were instrumental in finding and funding innovative research critical to the medical needs of service members and their families.

Prior to organizing the TerryKoroma lecture series, CDMRP kept Terry-Koroma’s loving spirit and commitment to service alive by dedicating a garden outside Building 1077 in her memory, and hosting a summer food drive for the Frederick, Md. area food pantry.

Of these tributes in Terry-Koroma’s honor, Miller said, “She was one of those people who was loved by all-it’s great we were able to do this for her.”

Fort Detrick’s Children Help Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree Planting SHANNON BISHOP

Children from the Fort Detrick Child Development Center assisted the Environmental Management Office in planting a tree in front of the new Emergency Services Center for Arbor Day, Dec. 4.

“At Fort Detrick, Arbor Day is typically observed in conjunction with Earth Day. This year, Earth Day activities here were cancelled due to lack of funding associated with the sequester. As a result, Arbor Day was pushed in to the new fiscal year,” said Melanie Skeens, Outreach Coordinator, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick Environmental Management Office.

The children learned about the proper way to plant a tree and the importance of Fort Detrick being one of the few communities to win the Tree City USA award.

Celebrating Arbor Day is one of the four requirements to win the Tree City USA award, an award that Fort Detrick has won for the last 12 years. The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America, sponsored in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

Defense Logistics Company Commander Helps Agency Visits USAMMCE Divert Suicide Attempt STORY AND PHOTO BY STEVEN GALVAN

Some may call it instinct; others would credit military training kicking in. Regardless of what it was that kicked in that day, the actions taken by the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Company Commander Capt. Lashawnna N. Ray resulted in a botched attempted suicide.

On her drive to work during the early hours of a mid-November morning, Ray noticed a young female pedestrian walk toward her as she drove over a bridge. She didn’t realize how that morning was going to unfold until she saw the young lady look over the side of the bridge.

“I rolled my window down to say something to her, but I realized that the driver in front of me had rolled her window down and was yelling something to her,” said Ray. Ray then got out of her car and approached the distraught lady now sitting on the side of the bridge and asked what was wrong and if she could help her.

Capt. Lashawnna N. Ray “I reached out to put my hand on her shoulder while I asked her if I could help her,” she said. “Then she got even more hysterical. She was yelling and cursing at me and the others who were around her telling us to leave her alone and to keep our hands off of her.”

Ray’s next reaction was to leave the site and go back to her car to retrieve her cell phone and call 9-1-1. As she was dialing, she was told by another driver that the call had already been made. Ray went

back to the location to see what else she could do.

As she continued to try to calm down the pedestrian, another bystander lunged at her and knocked her off of the side of the bridge to the pavement where she was held until the authorities arrived.

“She did exactly what she was supposed to,” said Maj. Shawn P. Gallagher, the staff Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at USAISR Burn Center. “Every situation is going to be different, but the most important thing to remember is to keep yourself safe.”

Regardless of why Ray reacted how she did is irrelevant. She followed the Army ACE Suicide Intervention Training program offered to all Soldiers. ACE stands for “Ask, Care, and Escort.” While the training is aimed at preventing suicides in the Army, it can apply in any situation, as Ray found out firsthand.

“I’m just glad that I was there and able to help out,” she said. “I don’t know what was going on in her life, but I hope she was able to find the help she needs.”

As part of this program, Fort Detrick leadership pledged to recycle all waste in a cost effective manner, and to purchase green office, building, and construction supplies in accordance with federal initiatives. In order for the Command to succeed, it is incumbent upon

each of us to do our part in contributing to Fort Detrick’s efforts in attaining net zero waste.

The Fort Detrick and Forest Glen recycling program consists of all metals (including aluminum and steel cans), all grades of paper (including glossy paper), plastics (#1, #2, #3, and #4), glass containers, wooden pallets, textiles, spent batteries, used oil, used antifreeze, and fluorescent light tubes. Recycle bins should be located in

and around your office.

Each time you actively participate in the Fort Detrick or Forest Glen recycling programs you are helping achieve net zero waste. To take this concept one step further, try to also reduce your waste stream. For example, only print documents when necessary, and when you do print or make copies, print double-sided.

Use durable, reusable materials and repurpose or donate old, unwanted items.

If you are using a govern-

ment purchase card, you are required to purchase 30 percent post consumer recycled content paper, but are permitted to purchase paper with higher recycled content. Also if you purchase petroleum oil or lubricating products for the government, consider those with bio-based content. In addition, whenever possible, buy items in bulk and ask product manufacturers to use less packaging.

As for solid waste that cannot be recycled, Fort De-

trick is equipped with four incinerators. Waste heat from the incineration process is used to fire four boilers that create usable steam throughout the installation.

Non-hazardous solid waste from Fort Detrick and Forest Glen is incinerated before being disposed of in a landfill.

Home Fire Prevention and Safety INSTALLATION SAFETY MANAGEMENT OFFICE

Many of us love the smell and crackle of our fireplaces. However, home fires cause more than 4,000 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries each year. Many of those incidents are caused from fireplaces, space heaters, and stoves.

At the beginning of the heating season, any fuel-burning system should be serviced by professionals to make sure the systems are working properly. Regular checks should be made to dampers, vents, and chimneys to ensure proper operation. A fire extinguisher should be near in the event of a fire.

By following a few simple tips, a home can become more “fire safe.”

• When lighting the fire, always follow the directions on the package when using manmade logs, and never break the log apart to

make the fire burn faster.

• Burn only wood. Pine boughs or paper can float out of the chimney and ignite your roof or your neighbor’s home. Items such as plastic, Styrofoam and charcoal produce toxic gases and should never be burned inside.

• Use wooden matches and kindling to light fires- not flammable liquids, and do not wear loose clothes when tending the fire.

• Always use a sturdy screen when using fireplace.

• Never close the damper when hot ashes are in the fireplace.

• Leave the flue open until you’re sure the fire is completely out, and most important, make sure the fire is out before leaving the house or going to bed.

• When it is time to clean the ashes, always dispose in a metal container and never keep them near your home.

For those who prefer to use a portable space heaters to stay warm, make sure the

heater is in good working condition. All heaters need frequent checkups and cleaning, and should be examined for frayed wires and evidence of overheating. A dirty or neglected heater is a critical fire hazard.

You should also: • Maintain adequate clearance (at least 3 feet) in all directions around the heater.

• Never leave operating heater unattended, especially near children and pets.

Another common method of heating our homes is the use of kerosene heaters. Use only water-clear 1-k grade kerosene and never gasoline. The wrong fuel could burn hotter than equipment’s design limits. Even small amounts of gasoline or other volatile fuels or solvents mixed with kerosene can substantially increase the risk of a fire or even worse an explosion.

Never refuel a heater inside a home. Fill the tank outdoors only to the full mark, away from combustible materials, and only after the heater has been turned off and allowed to cool. The space above the full mark is to allow for expansion without causing leakage when the heater is operating. Any spills should be wiped up immediately.

Use only in well-ventilated rooms, and open an outside window approximately one inch to permit fresh air to effectively dilute the pollutants below a level of concern.

Always keep the wick clean and properly adjusted according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

In case of a flare-up, activate the manual

shut-off switch. If this does not help extinguish the fire, leave the home immediately and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the heater, just get out quickly.

Lastly, here are some tips when using wood and gas stoves.

• Be sure the stove meets local fire codes and has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.

• Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the proper installation, use, and maintenance.

• Periodically inspect and clean the chimney connections and flues.

• Never use any type of gas range or even your oven to heat your home. They don’t have the proper ventilation that fuel-burning appliances are capable of, thus producing high levels of carbon monoxide which could be deadly.

• Before installing a wood stove always check with the local fire department and code officials, this will keep you in compliance so there are no issues that may pop-up later.

Half of home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February. It is important to be proactive and ensure a safe environment by inspecting heating sources and following manufacturer’s instructions. It is also recommended to test smoke alarms monthly. Personnel from U.S. Army Garrison Forest Glenn Annex met Dec. 5 for a quarterly All Hands Meeting with Davis Tindoll Jr., IMCOM Atlantic Region director, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick Commander Col. Steven P. Middlecamp, and William J. Crane, garrison manager, U.S. Army Garrison Forest Glen Annex, in the Armed Forces Pest Management Board Conference Room.

After opening remarks and introductions Crane turned the meeting over to Middlecamp who spoke about issues affecting Forest Glen Annex, including inclement weather plans, moving forward during times of budget uncertainty and safety during the holidays. Middlecamp then opened

the floor to hear questions and comments from the Garrison workforce.

Later in the evening, Crane met with residents from the Forest Glen area for a quarterly community meeting. Topics discussed with the civilian attendees included opening/closing of the Linden Lane gate, impact of the Purple line on the garrison, closing/ delaying post opening during winter hours, traffic, accessing the USAG website (to include Facebook and Twitter accounts), a general Restoration Advisory Board update, and location of Smith Drive (county vs. Forest Glen land).

“This may have been our shortest meeting yet, everyone was in good spirits and our conversation was very positive,” Crane said.

Air Force Volunteers Support USAMMCE’s Humanitarian Assistance Program DORIS CRITTENDEN USAMMCE PAO

Twenty volunteers from the 86th Medical Group located on Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, volunteered Nov. 23 to assist the USAMMCE Humanitarian Assistance Program in inspecting, cleaning, and preparing medical equipment for shipment.

From March 2012 to November 2013, airmen and NCOs have spent 10 Saturdays working on 483 pieces of medical equipment valued at more than $4 million. Their work has been in support of HAP missions to Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Africa.

According to Mr. Luis DeAndrade, chief of the HAP, this last and largest group included biomedical engineers, medical logisticians and other medical specialties. Five of them were on temporary duty at Ramstein.

This group technically inspected and prepared 121 individual

pieces of medical equipment as well as cleaning and preparing 15 medical gurneys for shipment in support of the FY 2013/2014 Operation Provide Hope to Tbilisi, Georgia, and another mission in support of the Non-Government Organization “A Call to Serve” also in Georgia.

Because the HAP is being phased out by Sept. 30, 2014, we are preparing as much materiel as possible for shipment to the countries the program supports, explained DeAndrade. Any materiel not shipped out will be turned into the Defense Re-Utilization and Marketing Office for disposition.

“Without this volunteer support over the past two years, millions of dollars worth of medical equipment would not have made it into the hands of those who need it,” said DeAndrade. “Many thanks to these young airmen and NCOs who epitomize our military service values!”
