Easter ULTIMATE
From arts and crafts to events to attend as a family, the Easter holidays are the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with the kids
A
s the days get longer and it is warmer outside, Easter is the perfect time to start getting outdoors with the family. Regardless if you’re just off for the bank holiday weekend or you’ll be spending the two-week school break with the kids, there’s plenty to do and explore as a family. Go for a walk in the countryside or around your local park and see if you can spot seasonal flowers like daffodils starting to bloom, or watch as wildlife comes out of hiding now that winter is over. National Trust for Scotland locations (www.nts.org.uk) are perfect for bike rides, dog walks or seeing what nature you can spot.
EGGCITING ACTIVITIES
The Easter holidays are the ideal opportunity to spend some quality time as a family doing fun activities. Whether it’s some one-on-one time with your wee one or a family gathering for the masses, arts and crafts are the perfect Easter pass-time. Put your boiled egg skills to the test outside of the kitchen with an egg rolling competition or use paints and glitter for an egg decorating session with the kids. If you’d rather the chocolate kind why not have your very own Easter egg hunt in the garden or local park – just make sure you don’t leave any packaging or other litter outside. If your kids’ school is having an Easter pageant or coffee morning try your hand at designing a wicker Easter hat with plenty of decoration to steal the show. If you run out of things to do, Pinterest (www.pinterest.co.uk) has a wealth of creative activities to keep you and the kids occupied throughout the holidays.
EGGCELENT FOOD
Between stressing about what type of eggs to get the kids and how you’ll get over to the relatives in one piece for the Easter feast, take a moment to enjoy some Easter treats. From hot cross buns to mini eggs, we wouldn’t blame you for keeping an adults-only stash for when you get the urge to snack. We hear calories don’t count on bank holidays anyway. Get the kids involved in the kitchen and make your own Easter eggs or popular treat dupes using moulds and melted chocolate. Use the pre-shaped packaging from a chocolate egg you
have already eaten if you can’t find a mould easily. This is an excellent activity if your kids have allergies or intolerances that keep them from eating classic Easter treats. For a chocolate snack that doesn’t require any baking – and less time before eating – make your own chocolate egg nests using cereal, chocolate and mini eggs. Put a twist on your favourite cupcakes or tray bakes by adding Easter treats or changing the names to make them fit with the holiday. If you run out of baking ideas take inspiration from this issue’s recipes on pages 15 and 16.

FAMILY
Foster caring is an invaluable process that offers a stable and loving home to children and young people who need it. Ahead of Foster Care Fortnight, two foster carers explain why you should take the leap to expand your family
Becoming a
foster family I
n Scotland, there are over 5,000 children in foster care, and many more waiting for the perfect placement. Children may require fostering for a variety of reasons, and if you can offer a child the commitment, care and support they need to thrive, then fostering could be an option for you and your family.
LEAP
Across the country numerous agencies, such as Barnardo’s, Swiis and Action for Children are working hard to match children and young people with foster carers and families who will provide them with the care that they need to flourish. Jules Durrant had been considering fostering for 20 years prior to looking into the process. After having two children of her own, she and her family decided to take the leap into fostering together, with the help of Swiis. “We’ve been fostering now for
seven years,” says Jules. “Once we’d actually been approved, the biggest thing I remember was pure relief. I remember that feeling of anticipation and I still get that feeling when we have a vacancy.”
FAMILY
Fostering is extremely rewarding and is something that the whole family can feel the benefits of. If you have your own children, it is important to ensure they feel included throughout the process, to find out what it will mean to them. “The thing that stood out for us most with Swiis was their interest in ensuring that our own children’s needs remained a priority and that fostering wouldn’t have a detrimental impact on their lives,” explains Jules. “Swiis really considered the views of our children. At the time, my daughter was around 12 and she was very excited about it all. My son was still very young, but that’s
actually worked out well because he’s grown up with it, so he doesn’t really know any different.” Life as a foster family means that no one day is the same, and there’s no denying that juggling everyone’s hobbies and interests can be hectic. But, the rewards more than make up for it. “We have three school-age foster children in placement, so our main tasks as foster carers include planning for their day and their week with school, clubs, homework, and just making time to listen to their day and what they’ve been up to,” Jules enthuses. “Everyone has their own interests, so we’ve got swimming, karate, Cubs, Rainbows, drama. There’s quite a lot of running around. But, if you’re really enjoying what you’re doing, it’s just part of your day-to-day role in the family, ensuring you’re giving them the best experience.” familylifemagazine.co.uk 9

FAMILY
I used to think I wouldn’t be able to do it, but it’s a totally different picture when you have a foster child SUPPORT NETWORK
Razwana Khan also found that the support from her family was invaluable throughout their fostering journey with Barnardo’s. “I have that family support and we work together as a team,” she enthuses. “My husband and I have four children of our own, and our foster child is part of our family. We want all of our children to be part of the fostering experience – we just all work together as a team. “Some people think that fostering is really challenging, but when you become a foster carer and you have a child placed with you, it’s completely different. I used to think I wouldn’t be able to do it, but it’s a totally different picture when you have a foster child. You’re learning from them and they’re learning from you.”
DIFFERENCE
Fostering is a journey that has both challenges and highlights, but it can be made even easier with the support of your loved ones. Together, you can make a real difference to a child’s life. “One of the biggest things you need is the support of your family and making sure that you all work together as a team,” Jules advises. “It’s important that the foster child feels a part of that family and that team. I think that’s what helps it all gel together, when they feel valued and part of something. “This gives the foster children a chance to see what it’s like to live in a loving family that puts their needs above your own. In doing that, I think you automatically give the children confidence and by showing them that you believe in them, they start to believe in themselves.”
FOSTER WITH ACTION FOR CHILDREN For over 150 years, Action for Children has been working tirelessly to ensure all children can grow up in a safe, happy environment, enabling them to thrive throughout childhood and as they grow up. With specialist support services, the charity works to ensure every child has the best start in life, and is part of a safe and loving home. Part of this work includes their fostering service, which matches children with stable homes and families across the UK. Action for Children provides extensive training and support every step of the way. Their foster carers also have access to support groups
and social events, meaning that you’ll always have peer support available, as well as advice from the service. With help on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, you’re never alone when you foster with Action for Children. If you are passionate about making a difference to a young person’s life, and have energy and space in your life then fostering could be for you. IGNITE THE PASSION WITH
Firedance
Immerse yourself in a Latin infused experience as Strictly Come Dancing stars, Gorka Marquez and Karen Hauer take to the road for a dancing spectacular, sure to leave viewers in awe. Ahead of their performances in Scotland, Gorka spoke to Family Life
G
oing back to the very beginning, how were you first introduced to ballroom dancing? I was always involved with dance; from being in the Christmas play and my mum also loved dancing, so I think I got the rhythm from her. We would all dance at dinners, but my dad didn’t dance, then one day they were going for a dinner and my dad decided to have lessons to surprise my mum. I used to go with him and watch, and that’s when I tried to get involved. We had ballroom sessions and I slowly got into it, and the teacher said I had rhythm and the potential to be quite a good dancer. I tried it out at school, too, tried it and just loved it. During my first competition there was a girl who didn’t have a
partner and they asked me if I would like to dance with her, so I did. We danced and we even won the competition – from that moment on I liked the feeling, and I liked winning and I just got more into it until it became my passion and my career, now it is my life. You’ve had an excellent career to date, from working in the theatre to Strictly Come Dancing: how will you take this experience with you into Firedance? From every job to every moment of my career I have learned something. My competition career gave me technique and information on logistics – as a dancer we’re working every day and we have to be consistent in what we do. When I joined theatre shows, it gave me the performance side of dancing,
going beyond technique to tell the story and show emotions from everyone. When I joined Strictly (Come Dancing) it was on television, and you’re dancing in front of the audience and you know how much they love what you do and you always want to do more, and do better. I think to have our own show and now touring the UK is the best for everyone who wants to come and support us, and make our relationship with [the fans] closer. When you’re watching on television you are seeing us dancing on the screen, but with the live shows we can meet people at the stage doors and react to them. Another good aspect of the show is that we can talk and interact with the audience when we’re performing and it makes us all feel closer, and you have a better relationship with your fans and the people who support you. Both yourself and Karen have worked together on Strictly, but how did the conversation start to team up for Firedance? If we go back to 2019, we were both doing a couple of shows together, and then we were dancing together a lot and doing different performances together and we were very happy dancing together. It was very easy. I remember when we met for the first time to look at the performances we had, and it was all very organic – we were both on the same page and had the same ideas of how we wanted to dance and perform. I think it also comes from our background: we have the same culture, we’re both Latin and we speak the language, it is very easy. In a personal way, too, she is a fantastic dancer. Karen has so much talent and qualities, and potential. When you’re dancing with her it does make your job easier. Sometimes that is what

INTERVIEW
you want: to dance with someone that you enjoy, where you don’t have to think about the dancing. Most importantly, what can people expect from Firedance? We wanted to do something different. We are looking at a show that is edgier, darker and modern – much more Latin, with added ballroom and glamour. We are Latin, passionate, glamorous and we are going to have Latin inspired music that is mixed together with modern music, there will be a lot of colour: it’s everything that you know already, but with that Latin twist. There will be 30 to 40 different songs throughout the show – there is a lot. Our director is very creative, too, and he is someone we have worked with before for Strictly, and people love his ideas and we are working together to create something new. We need positive shows that can make us smile and forget about what is going on in the world, and that is the power of Strictly. When you go into
any live performance you take that joy from Strictly into any performance. During Firedance people can come and sit down for two hours have fun, smile, be positive and enjoy. There is no denying the Latin infusions that have influenced Firedance. How has growing up in the Latin culture helped to bring this to life on the stage? We are bringing more of our culture onto the stage. It has already happened with music: there is so much English and Latin infused music over the last couple of years in the charts. When you listen to music in the UK every singer or band has been working with a Latin singer. This is giving us the chance to throw our Latin culture and bring Latin dancing to the UK. Finally, what three words do you have to get people excited for the show? I would say: different, sensual and passionate.
We are looking at a show that is edgier, darker and modern – much more Latin, with added ballroom and glamour Are you ready for salsa, hot pulses and passionate moves sure to take your breath away? RECIPES
Creme egg overnight oats SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS CHOCOLATE LAYER 100g Hamlyn’s Scottish Porridge Oats 2 tbsp cocoa powder 2 tbsp icing sugar 200ml milk 1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp vanilla extract (or seeds from 1 vanilla pod) FRUIT LAYER 1 ripe mango 2 tsp lime juice 2 tbsp icing sugar
TOPPINGS 1 square of dark YOGHURT LAYER chocolate, finely 225g Greek yoghurt grated 2 mini eggs, halved 1 tbsp icing sugar
1. Pour the ingredients for the chocolate layer (oats, cocoa powder, icing sugar and vanilla extract) into a bowl and mix well. 2. In another bowl mix the yoghurt with the vanilla and icing sugar. 3. Remove the flesh from a ripe mango, discarding the stone and the skin. Blend the mango flesh with the lime juice and icing sugar in a food processor or blender and pour into a small bowl.
4. Cover all three bowls and pop in the fridge ready to assemble in the morning. 5. To serve, spoon a layer of chocolate oats into two glasses or small jars, then top with a layer of the vanilla flavoured yoghurt and the mango puree. For the perfect finishing touch, add some grated chocolate and a halved mini creme egg to each glass or jar. 6. Enjoy!
Notes: You can layer up your glasses or jars in the evening when you make the oats, but the chocolate may mix into the yoghurt as the liquid will not have soaked into the oats fully. These overnight oats may be kept in the fridge for two to three days. Recipe by Jacqueline Meldrum (tinnedtomatoes.com), you can find more recipes the whole family will love at hamlynsoats.co.uk

From
field to fork When you do your weekly shop, do you think about the journey your food has been on from field to fork? We speak to two experts about the importance of buying local and how it could benefit your family, the planet and your purse
S
hopping at independent stores, local farm shops and farmers markets might seem like an expensive or timely option, but it comes with a range of benefits for you and your family.
QUALITY
From fruit and vegetables to the butcher’s counter, the quality of the food from farm shops is incomparable to large supermarkets. This level of quality not only improves the taste of your food, it often means less waste too. “Locally you can buy little and often and it is more manageable, there’s not a lot of food waste,” stresses Rob Copley, chairman of the Farm Retail Association and the director of Farmer Copleys. Unlike most major supermarkets, farm shops make use of everything that is grown: even the wonkiest of carrots is sold at the regular price. “The grade isn’t as high as the supermarket, so it’s more about being sustainable and looking after the environment,” explains Rob. Care for the environment stretches into the packaging used by farm shops, a decision they are able to make on the ground as products don’t require mass transportation. “The supermarkets are making a big push of having naked fruit and veg,
and everything without packaging, but the farm shops have been doing that for years,” reveals John Sinclair from Craigies Farm near Edinburgh.
COST
Shopping little and often, buying high quality meat and seasonal fruit and veg might all ring alarm-bells in your head: it sounds expensive and unsustainable. This feeling is something that farm shops can sympathise with, but they want consumers to know that in the long run, shopping for better quality products could leave your bank balance happier. You could save money buying less of a better-quality product. “Supermarkets are masters at promotions and they’re really good at pulling the wool over the customer’s eyes,” reveals John. “They do have deals that you’ll take advantage of, but just be more aware of what it is you’re buying.”
EDUCATION
Taking a trip to your local farm shop or butcher gives you the opportunity to find out where your food has come from – you might even snap up the perfect recipe for what you are purchasing. “I think farm shops are really focussing on how it’s the food that’s really important alongside how we can make it fun and enjoyable,” emphasises
John. Teaching your children about why nutritious food is important and where their food comes from can also help to tackle diet problems later in life, John says: “We need to catch this next generation and show them more of how the food is produced. “Food really does matter and we should take more interest and more pride in what we buy and eat.” Shopping from farm shops, markets and local suppliers brings a host of benefits for you and your family, would you make the switch to field to fork?
It’s more about being sustainable and looking after the environment Learn more about the benefits and locate your closest suppliers by visiting, www.farma.org.uk

GOING VEGAN It’s likely you’ve met someone on a vegan diet, you are vegan or you are considering veganism. As more people swap to a vegan diet, learn how to adopt the healthiest practices for you and your family

here are many reasons to being on a vegan diet: from environmental and ethical causes, or a new culinary challenge, everyone has their own reasons for going vegan. Veganism can be in the form of a diet or lifestyle, it will see you exclude – as far as possible and practicable – all food free from animal products, such as meat, fish, eggs, honey and dairy. Those following a vegan lifestyle will also avoid purchasing clothing or cosmetics containing animal-derived materials, or tested on animals. “In many different ways, it’s a movement focused on taking care of the world around us and those who inhabit it – which can only be a good thing,” enthuses Matt Turner, from The Vegan Society.

Going back to black You know what they say: money makes the world go round, but it can be hard to keep track of our spending and saving. From benefits and loans, to everyday changes in habit, we’re bringing you our top finance tips, to ensure you can make the most of your money in 2020
T
here’s no denying that many of us understand the stresses that financial strain can bring. With one in five people in Scotland living in relative poverty, it’s vital that you’re aware of the funding you may be entitled to.
BENEFITS
Benefits provide financial assistance to thousands of people around the country. Even if you don’t think you’re entitled to any benefits, it’s important to double check, as billions of pounds worth of benefits go unclaimed every year. Certain grants and benefits are controlled by the Scottish Government, inluding numerous heating and housing benefits; the Scottish Welfare Fund, which can assist with costs if you’re in a crisis; or certain carers’ grants. The UK Government is responsible for benefits such as Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance and tax credits. In 2018, 25 per cent of families eligible for housing benefit, and 16 per cent of people eligible for income support didn’t claim,
meaning thousands of people are missing out on money they’re entitled to. Navigating the benefits system can be daunting, especially if you’re unsure what you’re entitled to. For advice tailored to your specific situation, you can use an independent benefits calculator such as Turn2Us (benefits-calculator.turn2us.org. uk) or entitledto (www.entitledto.co.uk). For advice and support through the benefits application process, you can speak to independent advisors at Citizens Advice or Gingerbread Single Parent Helpline (www.gingerbread.org.uk).
OVERDRAFTS
At the start of the year, it was announced that April would see major changes to the way overdrafts work, with some banks and building societies implementing the changes even earlier. The changes mean that seven out of 10 overdraft users will be better off under the new rules, but it’s still important to understand how you’ll be affected. New rules mean that interest on all

FUNDING FINDER It might not feel like it sometimes, but saving pennies here and there can add up to a large sum, and there are ways to achieve this without having to make changes to your lifestyle. Home Energy Scotland is helping households around the country save money through reducing their energy usage. Their Funding Finder tool can help you learn all about the loans and grants you’re eligible for within your area. For instance, you can access interest free loans for a range of
overdrafts are now charged at a single annual interest rate (APR), there are no daily or monthly fees for using your overdraft, and the same interest rate is used for both arranged and unarranged overdrafts. The changes mean that your interestfree overdraft may be lost, with many new overdraft interest rates being set at between 15-40 per cent. While this may seem like a big increase, if you’re no longer paying your daily or monthly fees, you may not be much worse off if you only use your overdraft occasionally. However, if you find yourself in your overdraft on a regular basis, it’s worth speaking to your bank or building society about how these changes will affect you. If these changes will mean you’re going to struggle to pay bills, you should seek immediate guidance; the Money Advice Service (www. moneyadviceservice.org.uk) can give you free, impartial advice on how the changes will affect you.
You’re also entitled to switch your current account to a different provider, which can be a great way of securing some additional cash, even if you’re not in your overdraft.
SWITCH IT UP
Free money is hard to come by, but there are simple ways to get some additional cash deposited into your bank account, and it starts exactly there: with your bank. By switching your current or savings account to a new bank or building society, you could find yourself in the money very quickly. For example, NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland will offer you £175 to switch to them from your existing bank, as long as you deposit £1,250 a month into the account. Or, First Direct will offer you £100, with no minimum monthly pay in. On top of the cash incentive to switch, some banks will offer generous interest rates, cashback on direct debits, or travel, car or mobile insurance as an
things, from installing more efficient central heating to purchasing an electric car or bike. You can also learn about loans for home renewables as well as accessing the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. Not only can the funding help you save money, but making these changes is better for the planet too – a great option all round. So, what are you waiting for? added perk. The same can be said for your direct debits. Whenever your contracts come to an end for your utility bills, such as gas and electric, internet or insurance, make sure to shop around for a cheaper deal. If you do find one, let your existing provider know so they have the chance to match it. When your previous provider can’t match a new quote, make the switch to save those pennies. Staying on top of your finances can seem like a mountainous task, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. With financial advice and support available, there are ways and means to gain some extra cash, save the pennies, and understand exactly what you’re entitled to.

udgeting as a student can be hard. Your main expenses will be your tuition fees and living costs. While you are studying, SAAS can pay your tuition fees and may provide your bursary, you can also apply for a student loan.
APPLY
You won’t receive your fees automatically when you accept a place on a course, so it’s really important you apply to SAAS as soon as they open in April 2020. This ensures you will get your funding in time for the start of your course.
You can do this online at www.saas. gov.uk, don’t forget: this is separate to your UCAS application. You should apply as soon as you know the course you want to do. Don’t wait for your exam results. If you don’t get on the course you want, you can easily change or cancel your application.
ELIGIBLE
SAAS will check your eligibility, so you will need to meet their residence conditions and be taking a course that they fund. They may ask you for supporting evidence, which could
include things like your parents or partners income, P60 or PAYE income. Remember, you don’t have to take out a student loan, however if you do, you can apply for this through SAAS who then assess your application and send your information to the Student Loans Company (SLC). SLC then issue your loan payments. Other funding is also available if you are care experienced, have a disability or learning difficulty, are bringing up children on your own, or an independent or young student. Visit www.saas.gov.uk for more information.

Building confidence in education Every child has their own method of learning, and finding what works best for your child can be challenging. If you’re looking at how you can support your child to do the best they can in the classroom and beyond, tutoring could be the answer
T
utoring provides the additional help and support needed to thrive in the classroom, whether your child is preparing for an exam, or just needs some help boosting confidence in their own ability.
LEARNING
Through one-on-one learning, tutors can tailor their teaching style to a learning method that works for your child, providing them with a unique learning experience. Tutors spend time getting to know their pupils, understanding their strengths and where they need support. No matter what your child wants to practice, tutors can provide learning that enables them to reach their full potential inside and out of the classroom.
RAVIV
The classroom environment can be particularly challenging for children with a learning difficulty, but there are tutoring options to ensure they can thrive at school. The Raviv Method (www. learningdifficulties-raviv.co.uk) is an innovative programme helping children and young adults with learning difficulties find their way in the classroom. The method develops and corrects learning and attention skills that aid young people in their education. Karen Wexelstein founded The Raviv Method Scotland in 2008, after her son found success when taking part in the programme. As Scotland’s only senior Raviv practitioner, Karen has worked with hundreds of children and young adults, and seen first-hand the transformations that can take place.
Tutoring provides the additional help needed to thrive in the classroom CONFIDENCE
From improved learning to building confidence, the benefits of Raviv are numerous and can often be seen in all aspects of life, both in and out of the classroom. As opposed to working around the problem or introducing coping strategies, the Raviv method provides a solution, helping young people overcome learning difficulties. Tutoring can transform a young person’s learning experience and pave the way for them to become more confident, independent students. All types of learners can benefit from tutoring, and with so many different opportunities, your child is sure to excel in the classroom. To find out how Raviv can support your child, contact Karen on 0771 162 3605 or kwexelstein@gmail.com
KIP MCGRATH Since 1976, Kip McGrath has grown to have over 560 learning centres around the world. The sweet escape
With the school holidays fast approaching, it’s time to plan your next summer getaway. From staycations to the ultimate cruise we look at the best ways to make the most of your time off and create lasting memories
Always check for travel updates with your holiday provider before a trip.
CITY-BREAK
Packed with history and culture, city breaks around Europe are a budget-friendly option with something to entertain the whole family. Spend a long weekend in Belgium’s capital city, Brussels, and sample your way through the city’s rich chocolate history, or plan a mid-week escape to Amsterdam for stroopwafel and an educational visit to the Anne Frank House. City-breaks are the perfect fit if you want the kids to be learning during leisure time or ten days in the sun isn’t an option. Sites like Expedia (www.expedia.co.uk), Jet2Holidays (www.jet2holidays. com) and Last Minute (www. lastminute.com) allow you to search for short city breaks to fit any budget.
STAYCATION
Make the most of what your home soil has to offer, with excellent transport links it has never been easier to plan a family staycation. Staycations are especially appealing if the kids are hoping to take their furry friend with them. Keep it classic with a trip to the English seaside in Blackpool, Brighton, or Cornwall: perfect for days by the beach, arcades and light shows on the esplanade, and walks in the sunshine. Travel tips
Travelling can be stressful no matter where you’re going – especially if you are travelling with a baby or young child. Where possible, packing light can save you stress and money. With high charges for adding extra bags to your booking, travelling with cabin baggage only when going abroad will help you save when booking and will also save you time when making your way through the airport. If you are going away for more than a few days but only want to take the essentials, hotel laundry services or local laundrettes can be cheaper than adding extra baggage when you book.
outdoors as a family, areas like the Peak District and the Lake District could be your perfect staycation spot. Pack your life into the car for a week and explore Scotland while completing the North Coast 500 – you could even try your hand at camping with the kids if the weather is nice. Taking you in a loop around the edge of the highlands, the North Coast 500 even has a dedicated website (www.northcoast500.com) to help you plan your trip.
If you can, being flexible with your travel dates can make you a big saving: this is a great option when searching for packages and deals. Setting off or coming home mid-week could mean you get a better fare and give you an easier commute if travelling at peaktimes of the day.

HEALTH
Baby, mental health and me Welcoming a new life into the world is a wonderful experience, but for some new parents this can be dampened with symptoms of postnatal depression. An area that is still shrouded in whispers and taboo, we ask: what support is available for people living with postnatal depression?
T
he most common perinatal mental health disorder experienced by women in their first year after having a baby is postnatal depression. It’s no surprise, after all, the life you once knew has changed dramatically – it is a positive, exciting time, but it can come with increased levels of anxiety, isolation and intrusive thoughts. In fact, between 10 to 20 per cent of women experience depression and anxiety in pregnancy and after birth. However, this can be exacerbated and experienced moderately or severe, gradually or suddenly. Experiences within six weeks of giving birth or up to a year
after birth, getting help is essential.
RECOGNISE
“Often it can be really hard to recognise, because we might feel unable to tell other people how we really feel in case they think we’re bad parents,” emphasises Sarah Wheatley, a psychotherapist for over eight years, with 20 years of experience, and trained in Newborn Behavioural Observation techniques and founder of Birth and Beyond. Working directly with new parents and their children, Sarah has first-hand experience of helping both men and women to understand their parenting roles.
Worrying if you’re doing right by your child is a common emotion for parents, especially if this is your first child. However, when these emotions pass over into anxiety and self-critical behaviour it can feel as though you’re not parenting in the right way. Sarah adds: “A parent might have a distorted view of how well they’re doing and if they don’t feel like they’re doing well it might turn into a vicious cycle.”
INTERACTION
In a bid to support new parents, Sarah goes through a process of video interaction guidance, similar to that used in mother and baby units. Biased around familylifemagazine.co.uk 31

positivity, five to 10 minutes of filming is created with the parent and their baby centred around, as Sarah explains, honest questions including: Does my baby hate me? Am I good enough mother? Sarah continues: “What is amazing, in these really short clips you see these micro moments of interaction that you just wouldn’t notice, and it might just be a baby glancing at the mum, and without saying anything the mum just picks the baby up. Or the baby makes a noise, that most people wouldn’t register a noise had been made, and the mum asks the baby a question – showing they are absolutely attuned to what the baby is doing. “People don’t realise what they are doing as a parent. There was one mum who was convinced her baby hated her, she really didn’t think she had anything to offer her child,” explains Sarah. “I was really lucky, I started recording when she was on a phone call and her baby made a noise to catch her attention and she turned around to look at him. When she caught his gaze he just did this amazing full body wiggle. “The mum was able to see that not only had she responded to her baby, but what joy it brought him when she had responded. You could feel the joy from him just catching her attention, and she saw how important she was to her baby.”
We all need help in different ways and at different times, that’s just part of the parenting process POSITIVE
There is no denying that postnatal depression can be debilitating and cause intrusive thoughts, but the support from organisations such as Birth and Beyond, NCT and PANDAS Foundations can help both mothers and fathers. However, there is still a stigma that comes with postnatal depression and anxiety around parenting, which can stop people from reaching out. “Our culture is so judgemental of parents, especially mothers, so it’s very common to assume that if you’re struggling that others will judge you as unfit,” empathises Sarah. “It is all about restructuring society so that we value the process of bringing a child into the world, how much we recognise the impact it has on the woman and her body, and her identity and the impact it
has on the father, too.” There are many reasons that a new parent can experience pre or postnatal depression, and those risk factors can include: previous miscarriages, relationship pressures, worries around finances, accommodation and work, but reaching out for assistance is imperative. From your nearest and dearest, to finding a mother and baby group, or support networks online, there are people on hand to ensure you are the best parent you can be. “If you’re reading this in the first place it shows that you’re going to be fine, because it shows that you really care about being a good parent,” emphasises Sarah. “I would also say, if you’re not feeling good, absolutely go and get support. I know it takes so much energy and it can be so difficult if you don’t meet the right person to listen to you first time, but absolutely it is not ok to feel rubbish. “I don’t think that should be a person’s experience, there is a lot of support out there. Even if your GP isn’t helpful, try your health visitor or someone in your group: find the person who will listen to you and support you to get some extra help. We all need help in different ways and at different times, that’s just part of the parenting process.”
KNOW THE SIGNS
Symptoms of postnatal depression can differ from person to person, but the most common signs can include: • Feeling down and emotional • An inability to concentrate • Anger • Sleep problems • Finding it difficult to leave the house • Over or under eating • Having problems bonding with your baby • And in extreme issues suicidal thoughts
Advice and support is available from NCT (www.nct.org.uk), Birth and Beyond (birthandbeyond.com), NHS Choices’ (www.nhs.uk) or make an appointment with your GP or call 111. 32 familylifemagazine.co.uk

CHILDHOOD ANXIETY It is difficult to see your child unwell or in pain, but as the number of children and young people experiencing anxiety in everyday life rises, it is important to know how to support them
I
n a time where children and young people are bombarded with information about the negative things happening in the world, it can be overwhelming for young people to understand the world around them. As a parent, it can also be difficult to know how to provide the right support.
ANXIETY FACTORS
According to research by NHS Digital, one in eight children and young people aged five to 19 have at least one mental disorder. This includes emotional disorders like anxiety and depression. From the climate crisis and the current landscape to everyday pressures like school grades and relationships, many factors could lead to your child feeling upset, confused don’t dismiss their feelings, what and down. might seem minor or simple to you As a young person it can be difficult could feel like the end of the world to a to understand that things will get child or young person. better, especially with fake news Be patient and listen to how and misinformation in high they are feeling, giving them circulation. space and time to open up Without support and will remove the pressure treatment this could Mental health and reassure them lead to detrimental problems can that their feelings are behaviours, but this validated, and there is is avoidable. You can also make your child aware of easy to access resources like the SHOUT 24/7 text service (text 85258) or Feels FM (www.feelsfm.co.uk). The tool, which was created by SeeMe Scotland, lets users pick an emoji to describe how they’re feeling and generates a playlist, helping young people with mental health problems using music and activities.
The thought of calling a mental health helpline can be daunting at any age, but it is important to reach out if you are concerned about your own or your child’s mental wellbeing. THE IMPORTANCE OF
CAR SEAT SAFETY
From the minute our children are born, we feel a strong and urgent desire to keep them safe. However, if we choose the wrong child car seat or fit it or them into it incorrectly – we put our child at potentially serious risk. Good Egg Safety reveal how you can ensure your child’s safety when in the car
C
ar seats are a vital piece of ‘safety critical’ equipment to ensure the safety of our children, however information on the vast range of different seats available can be very confusing. Good Egg Safety campaign to ensure parents receive the right information. Jan James, chief executive and founder of Good Egg Safety, says: “Parents may not realise that car seats are not ‘all the same’ and some seats may not do the job intended if they don’t fit correctly. We only get one chance in the event of a collision, to ensure the seat works.” As a mother herself, Jan knows how passionate parents are about keeping their children safe.
IMPORTANCE
In the UK it is estimated that two thirds of car seats are incorrectly fitted, leaving children in danger while travelling. Knowledge on how to fit your car seat is key to their safety. “We see a lot of common errors at our Scottish Community Check Events and they are usually just a quick fix,” reveals Jan. Common errors include slack harnesses, incorrect belt routing and incorrect harness heights – all which can be fixed with correct information. “If the car seat doesn’t fit your child or the cars it goes into, then it’s less effective and can put your child in danger,” adds Jan.

Giving a
helping hand Volunteering is a rewarding experience that not only gives you the chance to gain experience, but also allows you to support the local community. Get the kids involved and give back to a cause close to your heart in 2020
N
o matter what your motivations for volunteering, it’s a rewarding experience that provides personal benefits, as well as opportunities to learn about the world we live in and contribute to society in a method that benefits others.
EMPLOYMENT
Volunteering is a fantastic way to enhance and develop some of your key skills. This is particularly important if you’ve been out of work for a long period of time, be that after maternity leave or for other reasons, and are looking for a stepping-stone back into employment. Volunteering can also be a great option if you’re looking for a part-time role to ease back into the world of work.
From communication and teamwork, to problem solving and creativity, volunteering will help hone your skills and boost your CV. Volunteering can also be a beneficial tool in understanding how going back to work will fit into your new daily routine. It can also have a positive impact on your mental health, with many volunteers reporting decreased stress, anxiety and depression, as well as improved confidence and self-esteem. Not only does volunteering have fantastic personal benefits, but all of this can get you prepared to return to the world of work. And it is a fantastic way to get involved with a cause that is close to your heart.
FAMILY FUN
Volunteering doesn’t have to be
something you do alone. Getting the kids involved is not only a great way to spend time together as a family, but also helps them develop important life skills, and shows them how to be kind, responsible citizens. There are plenty of causes that welcome children along as volunteers. Keep Scotland Beautiful (www. keepscotlandbeautiful.org) frequently organises litter picks, to help local communities look clean, and promote understanding about the climate crisis. They also run their Upstream Battle sessions, to remove plastic and rubbish from the River Clyde. Not only do these sessions provide an appreciation for nature and the planet we live on through encouraging children to engage with their surroundings; it’s also a great way of getting some fresh air and exercise as a family. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities to choose from: animal rights, tutoring, food banks, soup kitchens, medical conditions and supporting the elderly are just a few of the valuable causes that you can give back to. Reaching out to your local community, or a charity close to your heart will see you giving back in no time. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and volunteering can open up a range of new, exciting experiences for you and your family. So, how will you get involved?
To find out about the volunteering opportunities in your local area, visit Volunteer Scotland (www.volunteerscotland.net) to get started.

Start your night watching the performance, and then head through to the bar to dance the night away. One thing’s for sure, on girls’ night out, the world is your oyster. familylifemagazine.co.uk 47
