WELCOME
WELCOME Hey guys! Welcome to the summer issue of Student Bible. It’s finally time to enjoy some sunshine: we look at the best ways to spend your summer holidays – from volunteering to Vietnam. There’s a lot to pack in. If you’re heading off to university or college in one of Scotland’s cities in autumn, we get you started with handy city guides so you know where to go day and night. And we talk about how to do pre-drinks – responsibly, of course. But it’s not all partying – we also cover the big issues of today, like how to cope with anxiety and how to stay safe while you’re hitting the town. Hope you enjoy!

CONTENTS CITY GUIDES
06 Glasgow It’s Scotland’s biggest city and also the most raucous. It’s easy to have a good time in G-town. 09 Dundee There’s more to Dundee than the Beano. 10 Edinburgh Don’t let the Georgian facades fool you, the capital isn’t too fancy to party hard. 13 Stirling and St Andrews
Small town does not mean small time when it comes to these universities.
15 Aberdeen The granite city likes a brew or two – there’s lots to do up north.
STUDENT LIFE
04 Locating your new digs Finding a flat can be a headache, but our handy tips will help you in your search. 16 The pre-drinks party guide
Before you hit the club, it’s all
about pre-drinks. Just remember to go easy otherwise you’ll never make it to the party.
28 Let’s talk anxiety We all experience anxiety at one time or another – but how do you cope?
TIME OUT
18 Keeping it safe on the town It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Safety first, guys. 21 Count your pennies Feel your student loan slipping through your fingers? Make the most of your pennies by setting a budget.
23 Summer lovin’ Summer is finally here! That means festivals, parties, part-time jobs, volunteering – how will we fit it all in? 26 We’re all going on a summer holiday! There’s a whole world out there! 30 Horrific hols Whatever happens on your holidays, it’s not that bad.

STUDENT LIFE
LOCATING YOUR NEW DIGS You’re packing up shop and gearing up to check into your new digs. Problem is… you and your chosen flatmates don’t actually have anywhere to live yet. Finding a flat can be a pain but it doesn’t have to bring on a panic attack
I
t’s safe to say that figuring out where you’re going to live next semester is guaranteed to bring on a migraine. However, there are some pretty nifty tips and tricks to get a cosy pad to do your revision/partying in.
FINDING YOUR GAFF It’s fun to dream big, but when it comes to a student flat try thinking more realistically. Spoiler alert, you probably won’t have a dishwasher or a fridge that magically refills. We still can’t figure out where our parents buy these magical fridges. And it won’t
CHECK THE CONTRACT Leaving halls and getting into your first proper student flat is exciting, but don’t dive straight in. There’s a high chance you’re going to get lots of paper thrown at you to read and sign, and it’s going to get tedious. To make sure you don’t get caught out with the small print read all the contracts through before signing on the dotted line. You don’t want to miss any sneaky factor fees…
TALK TO CURRENT RESIDENTS Landlords and letting agents are pushing the yoof into the flats they have available to get some top dolla. Don’t fall for their traps: when you’re viewing a flat, make sure to ask the current tenants what they think of the place. You don’t want to get caught living above a pub. Especially when that pub has Sunday morning jazz sessions from noon until three in the afternoon, this is not pleasant – especially after a Saturday sesh the night before.
look like anyone’s house you’ve seen on Cribs. There is no right or wrong way to find a flat, and going independently or through letting agents each comes with highs and lows. The main thing is to remember your budget.
HMO The number of people you plan on moving in with determines if you will have to live in a HMO flat – three or more and it’s HMO. That means house in multiple occupation, or more commonly known as a house where doors slam like you’re living with really angry Hulks. It’s noisy, there are fire doors everywhere and you’re going to get a lot of inspections but you’ll have a room that locks, it’s likely to be furnished and the landlords are bound to fix anything that stops working. You win some, you lose some.

Day KELVINGROVE PARK
6 Professors’ Square www.glasgowlife.org.uk Parks, parks, and more parks – Glasgow isn’t called the Dear Green Place for nothing. Kelvingrove Park is ideal for picnics with mates, a romantic stroll with your Tinder date or a spot of live music at the bandstand. If the date falls short you’re a hop, skip and a jump away from the nearest pub.
and the music and football it has supported. Tennents, we salute you.
OX AND FINCH
920 Sauchiehall Street www.oxandfinch.com Granted, the student loan won’t cover this gaff but that’s what parents are for. When your rents come to town show how cool and sophisticated you are with a selection of tapas and fancy wine. ’Cause, like, you’re totes an adult now – sans income.
WELLPARK BREWERY
161 Duke Street www.tennents.com Welcome to Glasgow, time to get to know this city over a pint or three. What better drink to wet your whistle than Glasgow’s finest brew, a pint of Tennents? Get to really know the beer that has been the staple of any student budget drink by visiting its birthplace. The Wellpark Brewery has been cooking up drinks for over 450 years and is the place that Tennents calls home. Have a wander through the stills and mills drinking in the history of the beer
INN DEEP
445 Great Western Road www.inndeep.com Pie the Tinder date and head off to the pub – the student loan is in and you’re after craft beer not crap beer. Inn Deep provides drinks, food, banter, and it’s dug friendly, which is a major bonus. Pugs, pints, and poetry: what more do you need?
BIER HALLE
9 Gordon Street www.republicbierhalle.com If you love nothing more than drinking steins of European beer and eating a pizza in literal darkness then Bier Halle is the hall for you. Boasting a selection of over 100 draught and bottled beers from Glasgow to Berlin, this is the perfect post-lecture haunt. When the sun shows face it turns into a nifty beer garden so you can soak in the rays.
THE HANOI BIKE SHOP
8 Ruthven Lane www.hanoibikeshop.co.uk Become a ‘Phat Phuc’ at The Hanoi Bike Shop by stuffing your face with ALL the Vietnamese food. Get a taste of culture right in the heart of the West End without counting the pennies. Dingding, move out the way, there’s something spicy for you today.

CITY GUIDE
Mix together a dash of art, live venues, a sprinkle of culture, a generous portion of nightlife hotspots and you’ve got a cocktail of epic proportions. Glasgow is bursting at the seams with daytime hot spots and grungy night-time dwellings. Leave the tourists in Edinburgh and get yourself over to the neon covered dark side BUFF CLUB
Night
BAR BLOC
117 Bath Street www.bloc.ru Tattoos, beards, Irn Bru, Buckfast ice cream, and quirky underground live performances is Bar Bloc in a nutshell. As the music blares overhead, tuck into one of Mad Chef’s – his real name – concoctions and experience an explosion of flavour. Daily booze deals plus dino food makes Bloc the go to spot to gear up for the night ahead.
THE RUM SHACK
657 - 659 Pollokshaws Road www.rumshackglasgow.com Red Stripe, jerk chicken, dancehall and reggae, the Caribbean is slap bang in the heart of the south side. Shake what yo mama gave ya to ska and ragtime as you make your way through The Rum Shack’s 100 strong rum collection. Guaranteed a good night out, you’ll be disappointed when you stumble into the cold at the end of the night. Sun not supplied.
142 Bath Lane www.thebuffclub.com A legend in Glasgow’s clubbing scene, Buff Club is renowned for two things: playing killer dance tunes and the stickiest stair carpet you will ever encounter. The dancefloor is tiny, the seating area can only be described as cosy and the carpet has experienced more spilled drinks than your nan at the disco. This is the hot spot to meet the hip(ster), arty types Glasgow has to offer. With cheap drink deals and an eclectic array of club nights, you’ll grow to have a deep connection with Buff Club and the sticky carpet.
BARROWLAND BALLROOM
244 Gallowgate www.glasgow-barrowland.com There are a lot of things Glasgow does well and killer gigs are top of the list. No place comes close to the best wee venue in the world, the iconic Barrowland Ballroom – known locally as the Barras, FYI. Techno to hip-hop to metal, the who’s who in music have all played this venue and you’d be daft not to give it a visit. Watch the stars fall onto the neon Barrowland sign as you make your way to disco land.

CITY GUIDE
Dundee. The city of jute, the Beano and Dundee cake, an unusual combination to be sure, but don’t underestimate Dundee or the Dundonians. It’s a cheap and raucous night out for students and great day-time hang out
READING ROOMS
Day TEA AND CAKE
27 Exchange Street www.teaandcakedundee.co.uk Tea anyone? This quirky café is perfect for a cuppa tea and spilling the tea. Renowned for friendly staff, a chilled vibe, and tons of choice, with even vegan and gluten free options, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The perfect place to take Mum when she comes to visit.
THE DUNDEE LAW
Feeling rough after a night on the toon? Walk that hangover off by heading up Dundee’s peak. With fab views over the city, bridges, and North Sea, you’ll get all mushy about your beaut new city. One to tick off your Dundonian bucket list.
BIRD AND BEAR
2 Whitehall Crescent This cool new bar has already been picked as one of the top stylish places in Scotland, so get yourself down ASAP. Follow the adventures of the two cartoon characters Harold and Pip aka Bird and Bear along the walls. It’s also a great place for the morning after the night before. Yes, we’re talking brunch. Pick a place on the balcony, order the jerk chicken and mango, or any of the yummy gluten free or vegan choices, choose one of the fancy cocktails and enjoy.
57 Blackscroft www.readingrooms dundee.com Sshh no talking in the library! Opened in 2002, the Reading Rooms is legendary in Dundee’s underground scene. Housed in a former public library with retro décor, you’ll get a cheeky thrill from raving in the library. Every night’s different to suit all tastes from hip-hop to rock to reggae.
THE ART BAR
140b Perth Road www.theartbardundee. weebly.com Close to Duncan of Jordanstone art school, the Art Bar is a hipster paradise. An atmospheric underground vibe, this is the perfect hang spot if you want to impress the art kids with what you learnt in today’s Philosophy class. Drinks are reasonably priced and there’s even an outdoor seating area so you can have those late-night deep chats al fresco.
SKINT
Night
DUSA, The Union, Airlie Place www.dusa. co.uk Wondering where everyone is on a Tuesday night? Bets are they’re at Skint, DUSA’s Tuesday club night. Voted the best student union in Scotland, you know you’re in for an epic night. Admission is only a quid and with similarly cheap drinks, it’s the perfect night for you cheapskates. Save your pennies for the chippie at the end of the night.
INNIS & GUNN BEER KITCHEN
10 S Tay Street www.innisandgunn.com/bars/ dundee Indy brewers Innis & Gunn chose Dundee as the first place to open their new Beer Kitchen – it’s a bar, restaurant and brewery. If you’re a fan of a brew, this is the place for you. It’s even got a Brew School – you can impress your pals and make new ones while learning how to make your own beer at home. THE STUDENT BIBLE

Day SCOTTISH NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART
75 Belford Road www.nationalgalleries.org/visit/ scottish-national-gallery-modern-art Soak up that culture – you are in Edinburgh after all! The Gallery of Modern Art is a staple of the capital and a great place to bring pals when they come to visit. It helps that it’s set in a lush garden – perfect for the ‘Gram. If it’s sunny after you’re done with the art, get some fresh air and dander along the Water of Leith, the river that runs through Edinburgh.
PORTOBELLO BEACH
BREWLAB
6-8 College Street www.brewlabcoffee.co.uk Hidden away just off Nicholson Street, Brewlab is popular with caffeinated students furiously typing up essays before their noon deadlines. Get out of the library and have a studying sesh in the café – the coffee and freshly-baked treats will keep you fuelled up all day.
MARY KING’S CLOSE
High Street, 2 Warriston’s Close www.realmarykingsclose.com It wouldn’t be Edinburgh without a ghost tour, and the Mary King’s Close experience is the real deal. Sealed off from the rest of the city in the 17th century, rumour has it that ghostly ghouls still wander the preserved streets… we’ve got goosebumps already! Get a costumed guided tour, be transported back in time and get ready to scream.
Old Town is great and all, but everyone needs to escape the bagpipes and tourists. Jump on a bus and head east to Edinburgh’s promenade. Fingers crossed the sun makes an appearance, but we’re also realists about the Scottish summer – if the rain starts, get yourself into one of the many pubs along the beach.
CALTON HILL
Forget trekking up Arthur’s Seat – Calton Hill is a way easier climb and has spectacular views of its own. Situated at the end of Princes Street, the 360° views from the Hill’s top mean you can see for miles – whether that’s east out to the North Sea, across to the Crags, or Old Town. It’s also the perfect place to catch the Fringe Fest fireworks with a hipflask of whisky.

Edinburgh
CITY GUIDE
If Glasgow’s the wild child, Edinburgh’s the sophisticated older sis. Arts, culture, and the sights – Edinburgh’s a student city with a view. But don’t worry, classy Auld Reekie also knows how to have a good time and when the sun sets, the mischief begins CABARET VOLTAIRE
36-38 Blair Street www.thecabaretvoltaire.com Cabaret Voltaire, or Cab Vol as it’s better known, is a higgledy-piggledy venue that has some of the best and most atmospheric club nights and live music in the ‘burgh. Get ready to squeeze in because Cab Vol is basically a cave full of nooks and crannies. If you get lost, just keep walking – you’ll bump into your pals eventually or, even better, find the cinema room or swing.
HOOT THE REDEEMER
Night
HIVE 2 FIVE
15-17 Niddry Street www.clubhive.co.uk Okay hear us out with this one. Hive is a rite of passage for any new fresha. The club has a special place in our hearts with its sticky carpets and “interesting” clientele. Go every night in first year, make it to sunrise, and you can proudly wear an “I Survived Hive” t-shirt. Then never go again.
7 Hanover Street www.hoottheredeemer.com First thing’s first – it’ll take you a good five minutes to figure out how to get into this bar. Head down some stairs and you’ll be met by a fortune teller. Ask about your future, then push through the door and you’re in! Hoot’s is part ‘50s funfair and part New Orleans dive bar with cinema-style seats, boozy slushies, and a claw machine. You’ll find a new surprise with each visit.
THE STAND
5 York Place www.thestand.co.uk Laugh the night away in Scotland’s favourite comedy club. Every week, The Stand houses legends – from Dylan Moran to Larry Dean to Rachel Paris. The Stand’s Monday show, Red Raw is often its most packed out night as a mix of novices and old-hats trying new tricks take to the stage. Best of all, it’s only £3 – cheaper than a pint!

CITY GUIDE
St Andrews
St Andrews and Stirling have slightly smaller universities than the big cities, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun! It just means you’ll know everyone... and we mean everyone. From Aussie themed bars to steak barns, you won’t be bored SABLE & FLEA
12 Friars Street If you need coffee like you need oxygen, then this artisanal café will be right up your street. It offers single origin coffee by Nude London, organic bread, focaccia and pizza from Italian bakery Casella & Polegato, antipasto and homemade cakes, and a wee courtyard round the back. If that isn’t enough for the best study sesh you’ve ever had, there’s also a vintage shop where you can buy weird hipster furniture and apothecary jars so your flat isn’t entirely made up of IKEA and your mum’s castoffs.
THE KILTED KANGAROO
9 Uppercraigs www.kiltedkangaroo.com Stirling and Australia have many things in common… like um, a deep love of Neighbours. At any rate, this Aussie themed bar is epic. If you’re looking for some tasty tucker, a cold beer and a bonza time, you’ve found it. Split into a bar and a restaurant, The Kilted Kangaroo prides itself on having the cheapest and freshest pub grub around. And it has a karaoke night. We may never leave.
LOVING FOOD TRUCK
www.loving-food.com We can all get behind a food truck. Loving Food sets up in the city centre and sources local ingredients. It’s all about twists on street food classics like meatloaf flatbread and veggie haggis taco. Sounds delish and perfect for the student on the go. And we hear that they’re setting up a permanent resto… keep your eye out for that!
Stirling
TASTE
148 North Street If you’re cool, Taste is the coffee shop of choice. Look, we know it’s a cupboard and you’ll have to perch on half a chair but it’s worth it. It’s the best coffee in town and where else are you going to go for your vegan carrot cake fix? It’s also full of a friendly and eclectic bunch of weirdoes who might just be your new best friends.
BALGOVE LARDER
Strathtyrum Farm www.balgove.com You’re living the country life now and that means farm shops that also double as your entire social life. And it’s within walking distance from the golf club. Hurrah! You’ve got the steak barn: a big boozy meaty meal with your mates, the café for when your rents visit and are keen to go to the Union with you but by no means prepared for canteen food, and a flower shed for buying flowers for that big date. You can also buy some vegetables at the shop once all that ramen has given you scurvy. Perfect.
CLUB 601
The Union www.yourunion.net Club 601 is the only proper nightclub in St Andrews, and by that we mean the Union runs it. The biggest, newest, and best place to party in town, it has the best DJs in St Andrews and beyond (hopefully beyond) to offer you clubbing experience right here in the heart of the Bubble. Club nights on Wednesday and Friday, mostly charts and cheese. At least the drinks are cheap. You won’t need a taxi home because your halls are right next door! Silver lining. THE STUDENT BIBLE 13

salmon and avocado you’re onto a winner.
APPY DRINKINGeverything
There’s literally an app for these days, including to get the pre-drinks flowing, whatever you’ve got in the cupboard. Mixology (www. mixologyapp.com) is a handy app packed with thousands of drinking recipes for you to whip up in a flash. With a ‘random’ feature included, a simple click of the button could introduce you to your new favourite cocktail. Or get creative with drinking games. Leading the way in app games is Picolo for iPhone, which will ask hilarious questions and shoot odd instructions your way to turn your night from a giggle into a hoot. For Android users, download Game of Shots. It brings you the old classic games like Never Have I Ever, Truth or Dare and much more. You’ll never be stuck thinking of ideas to keep the night going.
Y RESPONSIBILITgame s until
Pre-drinks are all fun and someone – and there’s always one – goes a little too hard on the mad dog and passes out on the couch. Drinking comes with the territory, when you’re a student, but with great power comes great responsibility. Knowing your limit on the booze is the secret ingredient to any evening’s success and you don’t want to be in the situation where you’re too far gone to be in control of your actions. Getting too drunk can open the door for opportunists so keeping your wits about you, whilst having fun obv, is important for a night on the tiles. Getting ready for the club can be just as fun as the dancefloor.

KEEPING IT SAFE
ON THE TOWN As Beyoncé and co once said the club is jumpin’, jumpin’, and the party ain’t gonna stop. That means everyone’s having a good time drinking, winchin’, and making friends for life or friends for the night. Having fun is what student life is all about, and so is keeping safe
E
very man and his dog has been seduced by free entry and £1.50 mixers – we’re only human. The tunes are blasting and everyone is getting on well, until wee Mary from your lecture goes one mixer overboard and is hitting a bad one on the dancefloor. There’s some safety etiquette to follow when going to discoland (ooh-oh).
IN DA CLUB
Having fun doesn’t need to get dark and twisted: being in the know about drugs and alcohol will ensure that you can enjoy a night out without ending up in bother with the boys in blue or recreating a scene from an episode of Casualty. Having a drink with your mates is part of going out. But when it comes to pre-drinks, heading out, shots, and going to the after-party, you might end up worse for wear. Make sure to watch your alcohol intake so you don’t end up being sick all over your crush’s shoes and having to be taken home by a very annoyed friend – it only makes the hangover worse. In the dark corners of the club you might find a gathering crowd taking a little something extra on their night
out. It would be naive to think that drugs will not be offered to you in da club but it’s best to avoid that rabbit hole. There is a host of drugs, legal and illegal, that are doing the rounds and you may feel pressured into taking something you normally wouldn’t. When it comes to drugs there is no guarantee what you’re taking is safe. Your old pal Frank (www.talktofrank. com) is on hand to talk to if Mandy becomes more of a friend than you first intended, or you’re worried about your mate’s new-found love for Charlie. Taking drugs can also lower your inhibitions and make you less aware of your surroundings in a club or at a house party so it’s best to avoid.
THE BIG ITCH
As the club lights dim you spot a hottie across the dancefloor and go in with your best chat up line. Congratulations on your big pull, it was everything you dreamed it would be and more. Or maybe it is was a total let down, at least there’s some good pre-drink gossip. Before you give your mates the lowdown there’s somewhere you gotta be: the sexual health clinic. From the first kiss to the stride of pride, if you and your new bedroom partner didn’t wear a condom (tut

tut), there’s a chance there may be a nasty treat coming your way. We’re not talking a bunch of chocolates: more like a bunch of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Embrace the riddy and get tested. All the major uni cities will have a sexual health clinics that will provide a free and discrete service to ensure you’re fit as a fiddle. Sex is all fun and games until chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and genital warts come along for the ride. If your test does come back positive it’s not the end of the world. Many STIs can be treated with a course of antibiotics and will clear up within a week – the lasting damage will be your bruised ego. Make sure the nice nurse at the clinic doesn’t become your new best pal. Once is a mistake, twice is a habit,

any more is just silliness. Get your hands on all the free condoms so you and all your new late-night lovers can have fun and stay infection free (www. freecondomsglasgowandclyde.org), woo! From a night on the tiles to love and other drugs, staying safe doesn’t have to mean you can’t have a bit of fun. All it means is making sure you have fun in moderation. Knowing where to go if you’ve had a lapse in judgement is good too, we’ve all been there and got the free souvenir hoodie. It’s all part of growing up.

There has been one constant hero on our streets: the black cab. Yes, whether you’re stumbling out the club with your new bestie for the night or desperate to get home to eat your kebab, the humble black cab is here to make sure you get home safe. Uber might be all shiny and new, but a black cab is not only licensed and safe – it’s cheaper than you may think. “People do think private hire is cheaper but that is actually a myth. With a black taxi or licenced taxi they know your city like the back of their hand so they’ll get you from A to B the quickest route,” explains marketing manager at Edinburgh’s City Cabs, Kyle Boggie. Black cab drivers sit an extensive exam after six months of revision before obtaining their licence. Many private hire and Uber drivers don’t have the same standard of city knowledge and disclosure checks which means

they are not as safe or in the know. “We also have a student discount card, called the Uni-D card,” adds Kyle, which is an added incentive to those on a budget. “Any student can have it and it offers discount rates on how much the final fare is and that can sometimes be more than 20% depending on how far you travel.” Save money, get home safe and quickly, enjoy your kebab. Get your paws on the City Cabs Uni-D Card by visiting www.citycabs.co.uk. Book, track, and pay with the City Cabs app on Apple and Android.

COUNT YOUR
PENNIES Budgeting your student loan isn’t easy, especially when your flatmates are hammering at your door to go out for the third time this week. But with these free and easy-to-use budgeting apps, you can feel in control
I
t’s been two weeks since you got your student loan and you have no idea where it’s gone. Between nights out, textbooks, that new Topshop dress you just had to get for that date, bills, and a mammoth online Tesco shop, it seems like your money’s gone out as fast as it went in. And, gulp, rent’s due next week. It might be time to think about… a budget. Wait, hear us out! Long gone are the days of excel spreadsheets and trying to figure out how much you’ve spent on take-away from crumpled receipts. We’ve found some sleek and, even better, FREE budgeting apps that you can download straight to your phone. You’ll thank us when you don’t have to survive the rest of the semester on Pot Noodles.
All of these apps can be downloaded to Apple and Android phones
2. CLEO
Cleo might just be the chattiest app out there. You can text or use voice recognition to “call” Cleo, who’ll answer via text. For example, if you text asking how much you spent on Uber last month, Cleo will text back “£22.” It’s artificial intelligence friend that looks after your money and it just might become your new BFF.
4. SPLITWISE
1. GOODBUDGET
Goodbudget uses a unique budgeting system called the “envelope budgeting method.” You divide your money into “envelopes” for different things: one for bills, one for food, one for entertainment. This neat idea is meant to stop you from spending your bills money because once the envelope has been sealed shut, it can’t be opened! And because it’s virtual, you can’t just grab a butter knife and spend rent money on new shoes.
3. WALLY
The answer to all those flatmates fights is here. Forget passive aggressive post-it notes and angry texts, Splitwise is here to answer your prayers. If one flatmate bought all the cleaning supplies this month, then all they need to do is put the amount in Splitwise and it’s divided between all the roomies. The app is perfect for budgeting rent, bills, and household items between flatmates and, best of all, it’ll put a stop to any who-owes-what squabbles.
Figuring out where your money’s gone can feel like Where’s Wally. So, we’ve found him for you with this app. Wally offers a 360 view of your money: what comes in, what goes out, what you’ve saved, and what you’ve budgeted. It’s ad free, colourful, and simple to use. What’s not to love?

R E M M U S ’ LOVIN Sound the alarm because summer has arrived and you’ve got three months of vacay to play with. There’s a lot of carnage that you can fill into your break: parties, festivals, jet setting and more, think of the Insta stories! Think of the likes!
D
isconnect emails from your phone, leave the project group chat, sit in a beer garden and order a pint because you’re on holiday and the world is your oyster. This year you’re going to do the summer holidays justice and leave the Biggie and Tupac investigative documentaries for when it’s raining. Unless season six of Orange is the New Black gets uploaded of course, then you’re allowed to lock all the doors, eat all the Doritos and dip for a binge watch session.
FESTIVALS
It’s a big year in the world of music and summer time means the festivals are in full swing. BBC Radio 1 will be having a meltdown of all things Ed Sheeran, if he’s playing or not, and all your mates will be
nattering about what tickets they’ve got. Make sure you don’t miss out the festival circuit. Kicking things off with a roar like no other is Download. The aura of rock and metal is churning at the spiritual home of rock, Donington Park to bring you three days (8 – 10 June) of sick guitar solos and pounding drum beats. Our inner goth is bursting to get out. Hold on to your top hats because a certain group of 80s rockers have an appetite for destruction. This is not a drill: somewhere in an alternate universe pigs are flying and hell has frozen over because Axl Rose and Slash are buddies again, the original Guns N’ Roses are headlining Download. We will all be going to the paradise city for this one. Avenged Sevenfold and Kelly’s Osbourne’s THE STUDENT BIBLE 23

Taking place over two weekends (29 – 30 June, 1, 6, 8 July) your T in the Park void is sure to be filled with the famous faces gracing the Glasgow city festival – added bonus, no camping means no wet clothes or dodgy body odour. Stereophonics, The Killers, CHVRCHES, local hero Gerry Cinnamon and many more will be playing your fave tracks. Fingers crossed the sun comes out. We’re sure there will be one day you’re going to pray for rain so you can dig oot the parka, as old LG will be swaggering onto the stage to play some new tunes, old belters and throw in a few head nods, shake of the tambourine and jibes at his brother. As you were.
WORK, WORK, WORK
Unfortunately, summer is not all about drinking pints or geein it yaldi on the green. Ain’t no way you can fund all these ticket purchases without pennies so take Rihanna’s advice and work, work, work. If you’re staying in the big city or heading back home to the hotel of mum and dad you’re sure to find part-time work that will fill your pockets for the months ahead. From bar work to waitressing, hitting up the festival as a steward or event staff, to getting all important work experience, the options are limitless. ScotGrad is your new best friend when it comes to getting paid work in your desired field. Throughout the year ScotGrad provides placements across Scotland in a range of industries – you’ll definitely get some brownie points in the classroom for this. Not only can work keep the old brain cells ticking along but you’ll learn new talents. Finding your time management and organisational skills are letting you down? You’ll be amazed at how much this improves after a few weeks of waitressing or taking orders in the local pub.
What better way to show off how proactive you’ve been over the summer than sharing tales of supporting the education of young kids from across the globe? teach abroad straight away or in the distant future, TEFL can take you places you never thought possible. But maybe getting down and dirty is more your bag? From Cambodia, Peru, Ghana to Sri Lanka and Mexico, whether you’re looking for care in the community, conservation or interested in public health, Project Abroad is on hand. With volunteering opportunities open for two weeks throughout the year, Project Abroad has many categories to suit your volunteering goals and budget. What better way to show off how proactive you’ve been over the summer than sharing tales of supporting the education of young kids from across the globe? There’s a Facebook memory you’ll be quick to share years down the line. Summer is your time to shine, even if the sun is fading into the background. Making some extra dolla to spending the cash at the festival bar or just lounging around catching up on the soaps, you’ll be surprised how quickly three months can fly by.

EUROPE We might be leaving Europe but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy our cultured neighbours. The sandy beaches and flowing sangria of Barcelona, historical streets of Berlin, or the canals of Amsterdam; Europe is bursting with potential for student travellers. Interrailing (www.interrail.eu) is a fun way to see the top destinations in Europe. Jumping on a train in France and waking up in Italy, interrailing lets you soak up the atmosphere of many different countries with the humble train ticket. ScotRail got nothing on this.

It’s a lot more affordable than it once was thanks to all the young ‘uns hitting the streets of Bangkok or going all out at full moon parties. Forget the gap year, going for an extended travelling holiday hitting up the major sights will fill your Insta account with dreamy scenery, memories to last a lifetime and money left to spend when you get home. Also, who doesn’t love an extended holiday? The check-in desk is waiting for you and your mates to drop off your bags; snap yourself with a pint at the airport and board your plane. Anxiety LET’S TALK
It’s been reported one in six young people experience anxiety so we spoke to the young people in our office
D
id you know anxiety and feeling anxious are not the same thing? While we all get anxious occasionally – before exams, hot dates, class presentations – that feeling usually disappears. Anxiety sticks around and sometimes its symptoms aren’t obvious. Although it’s a mental health problem, anxiety can affect you physically with symptoms like a dry mouth, stomach cramps, and heart palpitations. PINPOINTING THE SOURCE “I’d never suffered from anxiety before my last year at university,” says Susie Butler (22), a student at the University of Glasgow and Student Bible intern. “I always thought it wasn’t really a thing and didn’t affect me. All of a sudden, I was experiencing all sorts of symptoms from headaches to chest pain and breathlessness. I’d even have panic attacks in cafés.” Susie believes the stress of her final year dissertation brought on her anxiety. She explains: “I knew that it was the main source of my anxiety, but the anxiety was what was preventing me from doing my dissertation, so it was a vicious circle.” Anxiety can appear at any time, heightened during periods of stress like deadlines and exams, but it can also rear its ugly head when least expected. Susie’s worst panic attacks happened when she wasn’t stressed about anything. “I had a pretty empty timetable, meaning I had a lot of time to myself, and was left to my own thoughts too much.” Lisa McCabe (19), our production
assistant, says that school anxiety resulted in her decision to apply for an apprenticeship. She says that nights before exams she wouldn’t be able to eat. “I was so nervous I made myself sick. It got to the point where my parents had to phone the school.” Lisa thinks that striving for perfection is the root of anxiety for young people
– the pressure to look and behave perfectly, and follow the perfect path from school to uni to a career. Although we can point to common sources of anxiety– peer pressure, school workloads, and stressful home lives – mental health can be hard to wrap your head around. Our online student editor Morgaine Vas Varma

28/03/2018 09:54
STUDENT LIFE points out that there are many factors to anxiety. “Young people who are people of colour and/or LGBTQ are statistically more likely to suffer from anxiety issues because of the way society treats them,” she explains. As anxiety can appear in so many different ways, there’s not one fix-all solution, but there are techniques that can help if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Becoming aware that you’re having a panic attack is how Susie copes. “The first thing I do is accept it, acknowledge that something is happening so I can deal with it.” Susie swears by grounding exercises where you name three things you can see, touch and smell to help centre yourself. Self-care is the most important thing for Morgaine. “I try to be nice to myself and not make myself feel worse for feeling anxious. Disrupting toxic thinking patterns is probably the best thing I have done for myself,” she says. For Lisa, striking a balance between work and home life is vital and why she thrives in a 9-5 workplace. “After I finished a day at school, I just wanted to come home and chill out, not study more.” As a student, it can be hard to set boundaries between studying and socialising – usually you end up overdoing one. Setting times for studying and relaxing can be a way of managing the pressure. Anxiety can also be a serious medical condition. Yoga and special mental health apps, like Headspace, can help some people control their anxiety, others need medication and speaking to doctors is the only way to not become overwhelmed. No solution is wrong and how you manage your anxiety is up to you.

Who doesn’t love a good podcast? Whether they keep you company on your walk to class or help you sleep, podcasts are the perfect way to unwind. We found some free podcasts that discuss anxiety in frank and hilarious ways. There are hours of listening here so get stuck in!
The Anxiety Coaches
www.theanxietycoachespodcast.com
Run by people suffering from anxiety, this podcast is an entertaining way to learn about how anxiety affects everyone differently. Every week there’s a guest medic who talks the facts while the hosts provide funny anecdotes. It’s a great one if you’re wanting to learn about anxiety without being overwhelmed.
Crybabies

Crybabies is about, well, crying. Hosts, Sarah Thyre and Susan Orlean aim to make feelings a normal thing to chat about as they discuss what makes them weep. After listening to Crybabies you’ll emerge back into the world, ready to talk about all things emosh.
Another Round

Another Round covers everything from race to gender to celebrity gossip. While it’s not specifically a mental health podcast, the gals often discuss their struggles with anxiety in relation to what else is going on in their lives. Every episode ends with the eternally relevant reminder: “drink some water, take your meds and call your person.”
“I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WASN’T REALLY A THING AND DIDN’T AFFECT ME. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, I WAS EXPERIENCING ALL SORTS OF SYMPTOMS… I’D EVEN HAVE PANIC ATTACKS IN CAFÉS” – SUSIE
IT’S A BOY GIRL THING Expressing your feelings can be hard for everyone but for guys it can be especially difficult to open up. The fear of being told to “man up” means that many young men are bottling up their feelings which can lead to them exploding in violent ways. Aussie charity Beyondblue (www.beyondblue.org. au) found one in seven guys between 16 and 24 experiences depression or anxiety. Hopefully society’s attitude towards
men and emotions is changing and some famous fellas are encouraging guys to open up about their mental health. Ryan Reynolds and David Beckham have publically talked about their struggles. Zayn Malik has been encouraging young men to be open about their feelings, saying that everything from Instagram-perfect body images to pressure from parents and fans led to his anxiety.

HORRIFIC HOLS You’ve got three months until you hit the books so what better way to spend your freedom than escaping the British “summer” for some actual sun? Whether you’re heading on your first holiday Inbetweeners style or interrailing around the continent, keep safe and whatever you do, don’t end up on Sex, Sun and Suspicious Parents
“I fell asleep on one of the night trains while interrailing and woke up at 5am. I couldn’t find my friends and the conductor told me they were on the part of the train that went to Austria, but I had ended up on the part of the train going to Bratislava!”
“We were in Spain and my friend spoke a bit of Spanish from school. She went up to a couple to ask them what time it was in Spanish and they looked at her then said, “We’re American. We don’t speak Spanish.” We still make fun of her for it.”
“ON A GIRLS’ HOLIDAY IN MALIA, MY BEST FRIEND AND I DANCED ON A BAR FOR HOURS HAVING THE TIME OF OUR LIVES. WHEN WE WENT TO LEAVE THE BAR STAFF LIT A FIRE AROUND OUR FEET…” “I was in Germany a few years ago when that volcano in Iceland erupted and all the European countries closed their airports. Had to go through Poland and Baltic countries with Polish bus drivers who couldn’t speak English, while watching Polish dubbed Forrest Gump on a 24-hour loop. Well you know, life is like a box of czekoladki!”
“I booked a holiday with my girlfriend and best friend. They ended up shagging behind my back before we went. Try explaining that to easyJet. No refund. FML.”
“Landed in Rome and was taking a train from the airport to Termini Station. Paid €11 for a train ticket and got on train. Didn’t realize that I needed to time stamp the ticket at the station before leaving. When the dude came around checking tickets mine and my friends’ weren’t stamped. We got fined €100.” I was staying in a hostel and was woken up at 3am to two Australian tourists fighting in my room. The other guests just rolled over to the other side of their bunk and went back to sleep. Then the guys who were fighting started MAKING OUT and ended up having sex on the floor next to my bed! Needless to say it was quite the experience.
