the International Conference commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the death of Samuel Beckett: His works and thought that will take place between 5-7th November 2014 at the Mes贸n de San Antonio, in Guanajuato, Gto., M茅xico.

Samuel Beckett (Dublin, 13th of April 1906 – Paris,

22nd December 1989). Irish novelist, critic and playwright, Samuel Beckett was one of the most emblematic figures of 20th century literature. In 1969 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature “for his writing, which - in new forms for the novel and drama - in the destitution of modern man acquires its elevation”1. His breaking away from traditional drama techniques has turned him into one of the key figures of the theatre of the absurd. His plays, devoid of action and stage tricks, with decorated nudes, schematic characters and barely outlined dialogues, are of a symbolic nature exploring the human condition. In his study of radical solitude and the abandonment of each one´s particular existence, Beckett’s characters exemplify the fragility of personal identity. While his works have whipped up a number of controversies, and generated an impressive body of studies in the fields of literature, art and philosophy, they have managed to steer away from the melodramatic. Thus, it is undeniable that the dismal account of the absurd and human sordidness in search of a meaning for life will invite us to reconsider the tension between a person and the oppressive world around him; tension that is inherent to the existential antagonism that accentuates the human condition.
