Dear Parents and Students, Welcome to the Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) programme at Dulwich College Suzhou for Term 2. I can confidently say that there is something for everyone and I encourage every student to participate. The first of the College’s Guiding Statements is The College educates the whole child and the ECA programme is an integral part of our commitment to this. There are opportunities in music, sport, the performing arts and community service that offer students the chance to participate at different levels – for fun, for building skills, or for elite performance. So, whether you want to do something for fun, if you want to represent the school, or if you want to give something back to your community, there will be a programme in here that you can join. If you do not see what you want, let us know and we will see what we can do to facilitate it. Let me take this opportunity to thank all the staff and parents volunteers who support our programmes because without their hard work and commitment, none of this would be possible. Yours sincerely,
John Todd Headmaster headmaster@dulwich-suzhou.cn

I’d like to begin by introducing myself, I am Francis Ventham and I will be the Extra-curricular activities coordinator for the 2014-2015 academic year. I am delighted to report that Dulwich College Suzhou will be offering an even broader range of activities across the three campuses. Children from DUCKS through to Senior School will advantage of the extensive opportunities available for them to explore, learn and grow. I look forward to helping our students extend themselves outside of a typical classroom setting and to develop and refine the social and personal skills that are so important towards becoming a well- balanced student. I believe that the ECA program will be a great aid in this process. Students will be excited by the opportunities on offer, including activities from a wide range of skill sets and interests. There are opportunities in the fields of dance, art, debate and skills development, as well as an extensive range of sporting choices. Technology is also a well-represented field, with opportunities for skills based activities, as well as more creative choices. As always, there is also a wide range of academic clubs to choose from, as well as school magazines. I am proud of the range of opportunities that we have on offer, and I hope that students are able to make the most of the clubs and activities. Dulwich College Suzhou will be working to offer the most exciting, varied and fulfilling ECA program that we can.

CHQ for the Registration of Clubs and Activities The School uses an online booking system for the selection of Clubs and Activities. Users access the site through a username and password. For students this follows the normal procedure for login. We encourage our students to take ownership of their activity choices and make selections based upon discussions with their parents. For our younger students parents have previously been assigned login details that will allow them to make selections for their siblings. Information and support for accessing the system can be found on our School website under the Learning Tab and Parent Zone link – CHQ Dulwich (http://www.dulwich-suzhou.cn/page.cfm?p=755&pback=533)

DUCKS EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2014/15
We are excited to offer more ECA provision in DUCKS this term. Children will be choosing from a range of lunch time clubs. This will be done internally in DUCKS this year and you do not need to enter your child’s lunch time clubs into the CHQ system. We will also continue to provide a wide range of after school activities through our external providers. All of these providers and companies must now fit into a strict school policy that monitors quality; cost and provision to ensure both the parent and student get value for money. We are enthusiastic to offer the following after school clubs like creative art, dance fitness and sports. I hope your son or daughter will enjoy this terms extra-curricular programme aimed to develop each student to allow them to fulfil their potential. Also please note that DUCKS ECAs will start a week later on Monday 19th January. Yours sincerely,

JUNIOR SCHOOL EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2014/15
Welcome to the Junior School section of our extensive ECA programme. As I am sure you are aware, developing the variety and number of clubs on offer annually is never an easy task, so I am delighted to see so many different opportunities for our children for the Lent Term. The provision for competitive sports teams, elite music, along with opportunities for recreational sport, music and general pastimes are as extensive as any international school in the region. It is wonderful to see the number of opportunities our children are being offered. Additionally, the U9 & U11 boys’ rugby and the U11 girls’ netball see a busy term ahead for our competitive athletes. When this is added to three times a week Years 4-6 FOBISIA squad training and three times a week Junior Swim Team training, it really does highlight what a fabulously committed staff and PE department we have. Our music provision remains as always, incredibly impressive and again shows what a fantastic music department we are fortunate to have. I would like to thank all those involved for giving up their time voluntarily to cover such a time commitment, including weekends. If you get the chance please thank the staff too; a word of thanks from parents and children really are greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing all our children taking advantage of the opportunities on offer. Duncan Grice

SENIOR SCHOOL EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2014/15
Welcome to the Senior School’s extra-curricular programme for the Lent Term. Following on from our highly successful programmes last term, we are very pleased to again offer a broad range of opportunities for our students to enjoy. With so much on offer, I would strongly encourage students to actively participate in at least two activities each week. Aside from learning something new, I am sure that they will receive much enjoyment from the programme. Yours sincerely,
Stuart Bridge Head of Senior School stuart.bridge@dulwich-suzhou.cn

This is for students interested in creating their own jewellery. Necklaces, bracelets and earrings are particularly easy to create and with some practice and guidance we will be creating unique and fun or elegant pieces. Each student needs to bring beads so I aim to take them to the Pearl Market in the first week this ECA runs. Some pocket money for material is therefore needed. I will also supply a starter kit with tools and wire at a cost of 150RMB per student. This is theirs to keep.

Brazilian jiu jitsu is a form of self defence made famous in 1993 with the debut event of the UFC, and a participant’s ability to defeat much larger opponents without the need to punch or kick. The art focuses on joint manipulation and choke-holds as opposed to a more traditional striking based system. The primary principle being that fighting from the ground renders an attacker unable to amount an effective offense whilst you are able to restrain them. Brazilian jiu jitsu has the advantage of allowing it's participants to practice the art at full speed and power with little room for injury. Sessions typically involve a period of "drilling" (repetition of a particular move, instilling muscle memory), followed by "rolling" - live sparring in which the practitioners aim to submit their partner, ending when one partner taps out. The club will concentrate on “Euro games” also known as “German style games”, so called because the earliest and most prominent examples were designed and / or published in Germany. These games have simple rules, emphasise strategy over luck and usually keep all players in the game until the end, using a scoring mechanism to determine the winner (rather than the method of knocking out players until the “last man standing” is declared the winner found in Monopoly for example). This club will run multiple games per session depending on number of attendees, each member of staff will teach and take part in one game but attendees will also be encouraged to learn the rules and teach others allowing the number of games per session to exceed the number of staff members.

Advanced Band is a wind ensemble made up of students who have achieved a proficient level of ability on an instrument. The aim is to provide a chance for students to improve their technical skills, introduce new and challenging repertoire and provide opportunities for performance. Advanced Band will be expected to perform at many school and community events culminating with a grand full orchestra performance on Speech Day. Owning your own instrument is not necessarily required, but recommended. Advanced Band is an activity that requires long term commitment due to the amount of time it takes for physical and artistic growth. In an ensemble like Advanced Band, each individual’s involvement has a great effect on the group’s growth. Therefore once students sign up for it they are asked to participate in all three terms, unless there is a serious conflict which will be determined case by case. Being in Advanced Band takes a lot of time and effort, but it is extremely rewarding and you will make unforgettable memories while playing great music with friends.

www.sportforlife.com.cn Sport for life is Shanghai’s largest, most established and highest quality professional sports coaching company. We have been running sports programs for children and adults at international schools and various different venues since 2004 in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou. We offer soccer, swimming, tennis, and much more for all ages in Suzhou. Our instructors are experienced and fully qualified professionals from overseas and all lessons are conducted in English. We will continue to run the Soccer Academy at Dulwich on Saturdays for 4-12 yrs old kids, this is designed for those who are really passionate about soccer and more structured training will be on offer. In the advanced group, young players are starting to get the concept of team play and the basic principles of attacking and defending. Small sided matches give players perfect opportunity to put into practice what they have learned and to gain experience of playing in competitive matches. Other than having your kids taking part in the Dulwich ECAs, we’re encouraging you to explore more sports and activities options outside of the campus. It would be a great addition to your kids’ overall fitness improvements.
