We are EverGreen, a group of nine students who, over the past three months, participated in the research and innovation competition affiliated with Stanford and Peking University called China Thinks Big. The competition consists of a “Think Big” section to do research, and a “Do Small” section to make a difference on a smaller, more feasible scale. Living in a city with a fourth of its population over 60, we decided to tackle the problem of aging populations in China, and began by investigating the spiritual needs of elderly in Suzhou. Through visiting nursing homes, 15 interviews, and 335 surveys, we were surprised that for the elderly in China, the communication with their children — the psychological reassurance from getting regular updates - is just as important as physical company. The younger generations also tend to overlook the self-actualisation needs of the elderly such as reading or learning a new instrument. To encourage the younger generation to fulfill their filial piety, we’ve designed an app that encourages each family member to post a 5-15 second video every day into a family group chat. The concept is to utilize small snippets of spare time to promote more convenient and habitual intergenerational communication — you could send a greeting video the first thing you wake up, while waiting in line for lunch, or on the subway back home. The simplicity of this communication method can provide the elderly with company and comfort without the worry that they’re causing you a hassle. We also filmed a social advertisement to advocate the concept of daily short video sharing by each family member, and received around 7000 views in the past three weeks. (Link: https://v.qq.com/x/page/c0378na7cn4.html) Last weekend, we headed to the Stanford Center at Peking University for the national round of the competition, and participated in an elevator pitch, two rounds of thesis defense, and a “Hackathon” activity. The judges really liked our research and ideas, so we qualified for the global round in the US in April! During the stay in Beijing, we also visited Tiananmen, enjoyed Peking duck, and had lots of other local food.

Year 4 Intrepid Explorers Kimi and Isabel, Year 4 Students This term Year 4 have been learning about Explorers for their Integrated Curriculum topic. To kick off the term we developed our explorer skills, during an exciting and collaborative Amazing Race, where we solved problems around the school, collecting clues for each step. We also experienced what it felt like to be Shackleton during his expedition to Antarctica, and tested the insulation properties of materials he may have used to keep warm. For our marvelous middle to the topic, we learnt about Zheng He, visiting the Zheng He museum in Tai Kang. We explored a replica of one of his ships, toured a village of buildings from around the world where Zheng He had sailed. Shame the electricity was off in the museum though! Back in the classroom, we linked our Mathematics to IC, creating our very own board games. It was great to play them!

Last but not least, we developed our inquiry skills as we work towards creating our Explorer Museum Exhibition for our “Fabulous Finish. Some of us planned to design robots that scale mountains, models of space shuttles, board games to play, recipes for surviving scurvy and much much more! However, the most important thing of all in this topic is how we are developing our skills and learning dispositions. We are being adventurous, creative, collaborative and inquisitive. This year is the best year yet!
