rooms everywhere will be happy to hear that you don’t need laxatives masquerading as protein shakes to look good on your wedding day. Turns out all you need is a good tailor who can sculpt an outfit perfectly to your shape and height, and voilà! You’ll look totally smoking, and will most likely end up delaying the wedding ceremony because you lost track of time while dueting Feeling Myself by Nicki Minaj ft. Beyoncé with your best man. But seriously, dressing to flatter your body shape is the best way to look great on your wedding day; not trying to force your body into an outfit that’s unnatural to you and your day-to-day lifestyle or getting hung up about things you will never be able to change. Knowing what will look good on your frame is the first step to body confidence, so we spoke to two groomswear experts about what suits the five most common male body shapes.

TA L L + S L I M Being tall and slim is definitely a boon when it comes to formalwear for men. The slick slimline suits that are currently in vogue really lend themselves to this body shape. But remember a good tailor is essential for such a stature; not fitted enough can make you look like you’re drowning in material, and not cut just-so can make you look clownishly long. “The key is not to cut the jacket or trousers too hard,” says Andrew Brookes of Andrew Brookes Tailoring. “If it’s too tight it makes him look even taller and skinnier, so you have to find a balance where it’s well cut but not too neat.” Andrew recommends cutting the leg and sleeves slightly shorter to counterbalance your height. “You find very tall men have long backs, so cutting the garments shorter can bring balance to the outfit.” A kilt is a great option for you too as the many different cogs of a kilt outfit (the jacket, the socks and the brogues) ensure no area of the body is overly elongated. Yvette at MacGregor and MacDuff says it’s a good idea to incorporate some shape into the jacket. “If it is correctly fitted, it will create a more defined body shape, which will be very flattering,” she explains.

G ROOM S’ SP E C I A L

SHORT “Small guys can look good in most things,” says Andrew. “Look at jockeys – they wear vibrant colours and prints and pull it off easily.” If you’re short, you can afford to have fun with your outfit because bold colours and patterns allow you to inject some character into your ensemble without overwhelming the overall look. If you want to lengthen your silhouette, dark colours are slimming and, as a result, help to create the illusion that you are taller than you really are. Browns, olives and dark reds are all flattering deep shades that allow you to introduce a bit of colour into your outfit. Keep your proportions in check, though. “We wouldn’t recommend that someone who doesn’t have a great height goes for a Prince Charlie jacket,” says Yvette. “A more contemporary jacket, like the one in our Glen Orchy Tweed outfit, elongates the body shape and is very flattering, but still has an echo of the Prince Charlie style.” Remember, too, that tailoring is your friend; your kilt should sit between the top and middle of your knee, while trouser legs and jacket sleeves should sit just-so so as not to swamp you.

B OT TO M H E AV Y As many women know, a good skirt can go a long in way in flattering a bottom heavy figure. Kilts are a great option for men with big bums or large hips because they can be easily adjusted to skim over your lower half, while the jacket can add bulk to your shoulders which helps balance out your figure. “Gents who are slightly larger in the hips would suit more neutral tartan colours, as they elongate the body without drawing attention [to them],” explains Yvette. Fortunately hues such as grey, biscuit and soft sage green are incredibly popular in groomswear right now, so you’ll find no shortage of flattering options. If you would rather wear a suit, it’s all about cutting the jacket properly. Making it longer at the back allows it to skim neatly over the bum and prevents the material pulling at the front. “Really, anybody can look amazing if you utilise the best parts of their body,” says Andrew. “A well-tailored outfit should make you look at a guy and think, ‘God, doesn’t he look great!’”

G R O O M S ’ S P E C IA L

Bulking up is a huge trend in fitness regimes for men right now. And while it looks great when your muscles are bursting out of a tight t-shirt, it can look awkward when they bulge under badly fitted formalwear. “It’s all about getting the recipe right. Men who are very fit usually have sloping shoulders, so you don’t have the distance from the seam at the top of the shoulder to the neck, and you have to accommodate that,” says Andrew, who has fitted suits for many Scottish sports personalities, “but men who are muscly are proud of their muscles, so you want to make the jacket quite neat to show off the biceps and triceps.” If you’re opting for trousers for your big day, don’t be tempted to make them baggy to accommodate large thighs – you’ll look bulky and cumbersome. Anything too skinny could make you look like a male ballet dancer, though, so meet in the middle with a slim-fit cut which has been tailored and altered to accommodate your shape. Not only will it be much more flattering, it’s currently bang on trend.

H E AV Y B U I L D Tailoring for a man with a heavy build is less about making him look slimmer and more about making him look in proportion. You don’t want to hide your weight, but rather avoid common pitfalls like bagginess, bulging or dressing in clothes that are too big for you. If you embrace your size and tailor your outfit accordingly, the results will be on trend and cool. “Don’t go for an off-the-peg jacket, but rather something where there’s more scope for alteration and adjustment with the fit,” says Yvette. “You just have to keep the outfit in proportion,” explains Andrew. “If the jacket is too long it makes them look bigger than they are; same with the sleeves. I’d put the button where they tie their jacket about an inch above the belly button as it’s the smallest part of the waist, and I would drop the lapel and make it wider. Tom Ford has wide lapels on all his suits, it helps extenuate the waist.” Dark colours are flattering on this shape, but don’t feel bound to black. French navy and dark grey also look really stylish.

BEÀRR NECESSITIES

Sports fans, this one’s for you! Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers has designed the Scottish National Football Team tartan – and you can now wear the patriotic tartan on your big day. The tartan has been developed to celebrate all the Scottish national football teams, from the cerebral palsy squad to the men’s and women’s international A squads. Chosen by the Scotland Supporters Club members, the colours were inspired by the famous Scotland crest worn by the National teams, encompassing the passion and pride of the national game.
