DAD’S WORK IS DRYING UP, AND THERE’S AN ODD ATMOSPHERE AT THE UNIVERSITY NOW. NOTHING TOO OBVIOUS BUT IT’S LIKE I’M BEING WATCHED.

STORY MAC MACDONALD ART REZZONICO COVER IAN KENNEDY

V

IENNA IN 1940 WAS A TENSE CITY. THE WORLD WAS AT WAR AND NAZI GERMANY HAD TAKEN OVER AUSTRIA EARLIER IN A PEACEFUL ANNEXATION, THE AUSTRIANS NOW FIGHTING SIDE BY SIDE WITH GERMAN FORCES AS ALLIES. MANY JEWS AND ENEMY FOREIGNERS HAD ALREADY BEEN ROUNDED UP IN THIS CAPITAL CITY. YOUNG VLAD REZKY, A MEDICAL STUDENT, WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE WAY THINGS WERE GOING.

4 VLAD HAD BEEN BORN IN AUSTRIA, BUT HIS PARENTS WERE RUSSIAN, HIS FATHER A MULTILINGUAL TRANSLATOR WHO HAD COME TO VIENNA IN THE TWENTIES TO WORK. WHEN THE FAMILY HAD THOUGHT OF RETURNING TO THE SOVIET UNION AT ONE STAGE, VLAD’S DAD HAD BEEN REFUSED A VISA BY THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT WHO WERE SUSPICIOUS OF THOSE WHO HAD LIVED ABROAD FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME.

IT’S NOT EASY TO HAVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH THE WAR AND ALL THE TENSION.

THEY HAD LEARNED TO KEEP A LOW PROFILE AND VLAD BUSIED HIMSELF WITH HIS MEDICAL STUDIES AND PERFECTED THE THREE LANGUAGES HE WAS FLUENT IN...GERMAN, RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH. THERE WAS ANOTHER POSSIBLE PROBLEM. VLAD’S GRANDFATHER HAD BEEN JEWISH, ALTHOUGH NONE OF THE FAMILY WERE NOW. THE NAZIS RUTHLESSLY SOUGHT OUT ANY PEOPLE WITH SUCH ANCESTRY, AND VLAD’S CONCERNS HEIGHTENED WHEN HE SAW TROOPS AND BYSTANDERS UP AHEAD AT THE END OF THE STREET WHERE HE LIVED.

WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT? MAYBE AN ACCIDENT. SURELY IT CAN’T BE ANYTHING MORE SINISTER.

5 BUT WHEN HE REACHED THE CROWD AND FOUND SPACE TO LOOK UP THE STREET, HIS HEART SANK. HIS PARENTS AND YOUNGER BROTHER ILYICH WERE BEING ROUGHLY PUSHED ABOARD A GERMAN TRUCK. RAUS, RAUS! WE’RE TAKING YOU ON HOLIDAY, BELIEVE YOU ME.

THERE MUST BE SOME MISTAKE...

THE ONLY MISTAKE WAS BEING SUSPECTED OF BEING JEWISH OR FOREIGN. VLAD KNEW HE COULD DO NOTHING AND WAS ALMOST PHYSICALLY SICK AS HE HURRIED AWAY BEFORE SOME BUSYBODY RECOGNISED HIM AND POINTED HIM OUT TO THE NAZIS.

I NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT’S GOING ON, BUT I CAN’T GO NEAR THE POLICE. THEY’LL JUST ARREST ME AS WELL, AND THAT WON’T HELP ANYBODY.

6 HE HID OUT IN A SMALL, SECLUDED CAFE UNTIL HE HAD MADE A DECISION...

IT WAS RISKY BUT HE DECIDED TO GO BACK TO THE FAMILY FLAT WHEN NIGHT FELL. HE WENT IN BY THE BUILDING’S REAR DOOR.

I CAN RESCUE WHAT I CAN FROM THE FLAT AND THEN SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE. ...PRETENDING TO STUDY BUT THINKING ALL THE TIME OF HIS FAMILY’S PREDICAMENT AND FEELING HELPLESS. HE STOLE UP THE STAIRS LIKE A THIEF AND SLOWED WHEN HE SAW THE LIGHT SHINING ABOVE THE DOOR OF THEIR FLAT.

WAS THAT JUST LEFT ON, OR IS THERE SOMEBODY IN THERE?

In 1940, medical student Vlad Rezky had only just managed to escape from Germanoccupied Vienna to America. The rest of his family weren’t so lucky, hunted down because of their Jewish ancestry. One day Vlad hoped to avenge their deaths on their killer, a ruthless Nazi officer. Four years later Vlad, an interpreter for the US Army, was part of a delegation aboard a Soviet Lisunov Li2 transport, bound for the front line. Revenge was still on his mind but the cannon shells of a marauding Focke-Wulf FW190 looked likely to end his war, and his life, long before he set foot on the ground once more.
